QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component on QT 7.5 problems- will not work

I am running QT Pro 7.5 (it is registered) on os/x 10.5.4 (Intel). The mpeg-2 component does not seem to work after it is installed & the system reboots. I get a box saying "this is not a movie file"...yet freeware mpeg-2 converter Handbrake sees and reads the mpeg-2 file just fine.
I was going to see if WT was faster at the mpeg-2 to mpeg-4 conversion. Any ideas (since I have already spent some $$ on this)????

You misunderstand the purpose of the QuickTime MPEG-2 Component.
It doesn't make the QuickTime Player the equivalent of Handbrake.
If your DVDs are not copy protected, you can use the QT Component with the free MPEG Streamclip application to convert mpg-2 video to other formats.

  • QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component

I am new to Mac so please forgive my ignorance. I have a Sony video camera which has .mpg files. I wanted to use these files in imovie so I googled how to convert them and came up with MPEG Streamclip. It wiped my MPEG-2 Playback Component. I downloaded it again from the Apple store but when I went to install it told me it was too old for my system. What can I do now?
(P.S. hating that I converting anything to mac is so bloody complicated)

This particular aspect is a bit complicated!
As you can read on this page:  http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
On OS X Lion and later, MPEG-2 playback functionality is built into QuickTime X. The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is not required and cannot be installed.
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X

    Hello my friends
I would like to know if I can install my "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X" in Leopard ?
I bought this component when I was in Tiger and I wouldn't make any mistake in installing it within Leopard which is working like a charm.
    Thanks

    Hello Smokerz
I've checked within my Apple Store Acount and the download link is still pointing to the same version as the one I bought... Maybe I shall wait until a new version is available.
    Thank you

  • QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component Transfer

Hi, I bought the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component a couple years ago for video editing on my Macbook.  I just bought a new Macbook Pro to replace the old one.  Can I transfer the license from the old machine to the new one, or do I need to buy the prrogram again?
(Twenty bucks isn't that big of a deal, of course, but since I won't be using the old computer anymore it seems a waste not to ask.)
    Thanks!

If by "transfer the license from the old machine to the new one" you mean you are going to remove the component from the old computer and put it on the new one, then there isn't a problem. Your software agreement only restricts installation/use to one computer system per perchase/download. If you plan to use the component on both machines simultaneously, then buy a new component for use on the new computer.

  • I have Windows 8.1 and just bought the quicktime mpeg-2 playback component for windows and it won't install. I currently have Quicktime Pro.

I need to run Quicktime Pro and playback DVD with mpeg-2 content for school. I just downloaded Quicktime Pro, and purchased the quicktime mpeg-2 playback component for Windows, but I can't download it at all. Is this because my PC is running Windows 8.1?
If so, is there anything I can do?

    What do I do?
You actually have several options. However, since you specifically want to use it it with MPEG Streamclip, the easiest approach would be to download the MPEG Streamclip "Beta" package for the Mac which includes a utility app that will help install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component on Lion and later operating systems. Instructions and background info can be found HERE under the "Lion/Mountain Lion and MPEG-2 Playback Component" tab.

  • Hi, can someone tell me what exactly is QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg? its an installer file i need for downloading the QuickTime Mpeg-2 Playback Component. Where exactly can I find this as well?

hi, can someone tell me what exactly is QuickTimeMpeg2.dmg? Its some kind of installer file for downloading QuickTime Mpeg-2 Playbaack Component but I don't know where exactly to find it or how to get it on my mac?

    Hello,
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1332324
If you want it on your Mac, not sure it works or not in your OS version.
Then double click on the DMG, that'll mount the disk image, in that you'l likely see an installer .pkg to double click on to install.

  • Mpeg-2 playback component needed?

I am trying to use streamclip to export a DVD to quickTime but a prompt says I need the mpeg-2 playback component to make it work. But, when I go to the Apple website to download it, the website says I do not need it for Mountain Lion and above. Catch-22? What do I need to do?

  • Help with MPEG-2 Playback Component

    I have Lion, system 10.7.2.
I'm trying to import my VOB files into MPEG Streamclip, but it says I need to install MPEG 2 Playback Component.  However, on Lion, it is built in and supposedly unnecessary to buy.
    What to do?

According to the MPEG Streamclip website, you still need it.
    Here is what they say...

Many folks using Mavericks have bought the playback component from Apple so don't know why you are unable. You don't install it just follow the instructions on Squared5 site. Are you saying that the download will not commence? Did you try this link http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x

  • MPEG-2 Playback Component v6 no longer available for download

Hello, I purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component in June 2006. Due to a hard drive failure in my MacBook I returned to the store to redownload but my entire order history has been removed.
I just spent 30 mins on the phone to Robert in aftersales in the US and after discussion with his manager I have been told that Apple no longer host the version 6 component and that I should do an internet search to download the file as Apple no longer host this version.
Does anyone know where this may be hosted? Apple refused to suggest any sites.
This is strangely in conflict with this note:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26574?viewlocale=en_US
+The Apple Store keeps track of your purchase(s) *and you can always download the file again if something goes wrong* by clicking "Your Account" in the store menu bar. After entering your Apple ID and password, click "Software Download Purchases."+
But just in case anyone has any qualms about downloading this component from a non-Apple source, I have just had verbal confirmation this is the only way to retrieve this purchase, short of repurchasing which I am not prepared to do.
    Cheers
    George

Hello, I purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component in June 2006.
Be advised that there are two versions of the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component that work under QT 6. You will need to specify which version of QT 6 you are using and/or whether or not the computer is an Intel based model.

  • How do I re-download the mpeg 2 playback component that was purchased more than 18 months ago?

I wanted to check to see if I could re-download the installer for the QT MPEG 2 Playback Component, which I had purchased several years ago, but have since lost since I wiped my hard drive and upgraded my system to Leopard.  I have a copy of the app from the backup I made of my old system, but just copying it over to the new Applications folder doesn't seem to do anything.
I went to check on my order history at the Apple Store to see if there was any indication I could re-download the installer.  I logged into one of my Apple Store accounts (I have two, accidentally), but it had no order history for the past 18 months, and I couldn't look further back.  I purchased the MPEG 2 decoder several years ago.
Not only that, but I could NOT logout in order to log in to my other account.  If there's a logout button anywhere on any of the pages in my account I checked, it was very well hidden.  WHERE IS THE FRIKKIN' LOGOUT BUTTON!!!???
I managed to log into my other account by switching to Firefox, but of course, it didn't have any purchase history past 18 months back.
How can I re-download the installer?  I another thread, I saw someone mention re-downloading the decoder from the "Downloadable Applications Page in your account," but can't find anything like that in either of my accounts.
    Thanks

I am suspecting Apple have made a change since I last had to do this and have caused a FUBAR. If you read http://store.apple.com/uk/help/downloads?mco=MTM3NDgzNTM we are all doing it the right way but the option is not being listed when it should.
As I read the above document and as I recall from the past, we should be seeing a Software download option on the main account page of the Apple webstore once you have logged in and this option should automatically be listed if your account has been previously used to purchase downloadable software.
I suspect either they have incorrectly cleared older than 18month order data from accounts rather than merely not giving an option to list older orders, or that as part of the move to the App Store for downloads they have change the process and as a result messed things up.
I would suggest the following to you all.
If possible find your email confirmation of the original order to use as evidence
Ring the Apple Store phone line
It is possible the Apple Store person will be able to see older orders than the website is allowing you to see and they will be able to trace your original order
They may choose to solve the problem by giving you a credit for a new purchase

  • Most recent version of QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback?

Is it 6.4? If not, how do I get 6.5 or higher? It is not showing up in Software Update.
I had to go back to my DVDSP 3 upgrade disc and just install the MPEG2 playback component from there to get it.
    I have version 6.4
My initial install was from a DVDSP 2 Upgrade disc (I own 1.5, but after I got my G5, I just installed with the upgrader and typed in both serials) and a Final Cut 4 full edition
I then bought DVDSP 3 Upgrade, which I never got around to installing before I bought Final Cut Studio, which I used to upgrade from FCP 4 to 5 and DVDSP 2 to 4.
My MPEG-2 Playback component was not there.
So I used the DVDSP installer, did a custom install, saw you could JUST install the playback component and there it was.
So do I have the most up to date version of it?
I am running Quictime 7.0.2 on OS 10.4.2
    Thanks!

The most recent version of the MPEG-2 Playback Component is 6.4.
It really doesn't matter how you got there. Have you tried opening a non protected MPEG-2 (a DVD format) using QT?
    Does it work?
