Quicktime 7.0.3 and FCP 4.5

Are there major issues with these two? I am on 10.3.9 OS
FCP has been acting a little weird since installing QT 7.0.3. It's harder to make exact cuts in the timeline among other issues.

Yes...there are major issues. Do not use QT 7, 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5. VERY FEW people have gotten it to work right. If you go to Tiger, QT 7 and FCP 4.5, you might have better luck (might) but best to stick with QT 6.5 with FCP 4.5.
A few peole might say "hey, but it works for me," but those people are dwarfed by that ones that it doesn't work for.

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both.  I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time.  Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset.  Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing.  Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason.  Thank you very much in anticipation for any kind of proper guidance.

  • Can't use HDV quicktime .mov files (captured in FCP on a mac at work) on PC

    Hiya everyone!
I've taken some work home from the macs at work, but can't open it on my PC.
Footage was captured in FCP on a mac at work, HDV quicktime .mov, but won't open in the newest quicktime, windows media player and more importantly in Adobe After Effects CS3 or Premiere Pro CS3 on my PC at home.
When I try opening the files in quicktime, the screen is white, but the audio plays. They don't open in windows media player at all. When I try to import them into Premiere, I get a message reading, "Error Message, Codec missing or unavailable". But they import into After Effects, except they only play as white...
I've tried converting them into almost everything, and they often play (as .avi for example in the newest QT, WMP, Adobe Premiere and AE), but they increase A LOT in size and decrease A LOT in quality.
The HDV files that won't open read as:
    Source: *.mov
    Format: HDV 1080i50, 1920 x 1080, Millions 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), 48.000 kHz
    Movie FPS: 25.00
    Playing FPS: (Available when playing)
    Data Size: 69.53 MB
    Data Rate: 28.10 mbits/sec
    Current time: 00:00:01.64
    Duration: 00:00:20.76
    Normal size: 1920 x 1080
    Current size: 1920 x 1080
Anything smaller than 1920 x 1080 plays fine.
I've been all through google, and the adobe and apple sites, and the best I could find is here:

My problem is almost identical to these 2...
No one in the whole world seems to have an answer...
Does anyone here know how I can use the HDV files from the work macs on my PC at home?
    -Kaiwin

HEy, I have been looking into this problem... i also wanted to play quicktime files using my pc... The last thing i tried was downloadiing these codecs
    1)apple pro res *for pc
    2)mpeg 2 codec for pc
I have HDV files captured on a Mac G5 they are 30p 720,
I think i am close to solving the problem because: before installing the codecs i couldn't see the video and only audio.. but now i open it and i can see the video partially... here are my screen captures....
anyone interested in getting this solved???,... i would also like some help in importing m2t files from VLC player to HDV split where they can be read and edited. Thank you.
Ultimately my goal is to be able to edit these HDV files directly and export them back out with good quality.. because my only editing choice right now is Windows movie maker.
this is an error i got from the HDV split program. Its supposed to read m2t files..

  • Help with cs3 and fcp -from cs2 and fcp thread..

didnt want to hijack the thread about cs2 and fcp so started a new one
hi, I'm using a proRes 422 file (  mov ) 1920x1080p 23.98fps 16:9. Loads and plays fine in CS3 (custom  desktop settings)...but wouldn't mind knowing your project settings for  your trial shooternz...so I can compare...
My file is dark and a little  flat...so I used levels effect adjustments.  However, though it looks  way better and exports OK ( hdtv 1920x1080p 24fps) I do see some "noise"  now if I freeze the frame...is that common or am I over doing it on the  gamma and levels correction ?
I'm just doing hd for the first time really  on this machine, trying to figure out what I need in future for machine  and upgrade to CS5...so I am going to dissect this file and figure this  out til the cows come home so I don't have to deal with problems in  future with new machine, etc.
Another thing...I have media info on this saying  mpeg-4 ( mov wrapper) video = apcn ..audio = ipcm..
    audio  1,536kbps, 1 hz, 16bits, 3 channels, ipcm..
However, there is no  sound on the track which loads into audio 4 when video goes on video 1.   This was shot with a boom - as I can see a boom shadow in shot during "  back to 1 "  on the set (when dolly moves back to 1 etc) .... ( sound  mixer) so it's possible there is in fact NO SOUND embedded in the video  file.  Is that common to have a soundtrack appear even if it is empty  with proRes ?
    thanks...Rod

Wow, not too popular a subject ...this....
Got an update from the man who sent me the prores file...and a little info re: his opinion of adobe coming from FCP...I will share it with you all...
If you are going the Adobe route, I would highly recommend that because Premiere  CS5 is a really impressive app when it comes to working with footage and  editing.  I have recently moved over to the Adobe CS5 Suite because Final Cut is  good, but it hasn't been updated in a while....and the Mac is a really expensive  alternative to a really good PC.
The color space for the clip I sent over  was set for Rec709 HD Colorspace which is meant for broadcast, but on a non  calibrated monitor, it will look dark.  It usually requires a gamma shift and  color treatment (since the clip is uncorrected), but it sounds like you are on  your way.
Given the RED work flow, we always shoot raw and make the  adjustments prior to rendering.  The main reason we use the Adobe Suite is  because you can work natively with any footage in the digital work flow.....FCP  requires you to transcode everything into a Pro-Res Quicktime and you lose all  of the really granular ability to treat the footage in order to get through the  edit and color grade.
sooo, new computer will have a broadcast monitor ( just in case one is needed )...
I adjusted my clip by eye, plus vectorgraph etc, (levels and gamma) and it turned out fine...

  • How to correctly render quicktime with two pop and timecode?

I have a feature finished and need to create the quicktime for the composer and mixer. But I have to add a new time code generator as well. So, at the moment, I have a timeline starting at 58:50 and the feature starting at 01:00:00. It is selected as non-drop.
I was told by my online editor that I would have to either Nest the sequence and then generate my quicktime or I would have to create a quicktime from this sequence and then drop the quicktime on a new timeline and then create a quicktime again. I may be wrong, but it seems that both of those would be uneccesary as shouldn't I be able to just make the edited sequence into the new quicktime with an added timecode (via the generator)? Also because if I have my original timeline at 58:50 and then nest it on a new time line would the new timeline start at 01:00:00 and then generate a mixed up timecode?
So, with all that in mind. I am just wondering what my steps from here are in:
    1) How to add the two pop (I was told to go into the effects bin and find the Bars And Tone and extract two frames at 59:58:00 and 59:5801 and I gues drop those two frames into the timeline.)
    2) Add the timecode generator ( i know it is available somewhere in FCP)
    3) And how to then correctly render a quicktime for the post gang.
After that, I drop the drive and project off to the online guys and they will do the OMF and create the master HD project.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply but am not sure what you mean by removing in and out points and dragging from browser to a new sequence. How does one technically remove an in and out point? And is this a strategy that will somehow enable me to be able to nest the project?
I remember once a long time ago I tried to nest a large project (probably 70 minutes) and I tried highlighting the whole thing (which I may be doing the long way as I have to SHIFT click clip one and then SHIFT click the last clip and then try and find every clip in between that didn't get highlighted - which can take some time) and it would still not nest the project (kept coming up with some warning). So, I ultimately had to nest it by copying and pasting the film in 5ths onto their own sequences and then nesting them and then nesting the nests!
So, I am hoping to do a quicktime for my post guys will not be as long winded....
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime 7.1.5 and iDVD 5

I recently updated my quicktime to 7.1.5
Now, after exporting clip from FCP 5.1.4, dropping the quicktime file into iDVD5, and burning a DVD, the clips are not able to be played on a consumer DVD player (I tried 3 different ones). The DVD is able to be navigated, but once a button is selected, the menu freezes and there is no clip. However, the DVD works fine on a computer (pc and mac). I have been working with this process for the last 2 years with no problem, and the DVD's were fine even hours before the upgrade.
    Any thoughts are appreciated!
    Tony

    Hi Tony:
Since the DVD works on computers, I think that it may not be related to QuickTime. (Although, a permission repair is suggested anytime you update or upgrade.)
Perhaps you have chosen a different DVD Media? May I suggest saving the DVD as a disk image and burning it with the Disk Utility at the slowest speed possible?
Verbatim DVD-R 4X seems to be the pick around here.

That was my first thought too. However, I tested on 3 different models of DVD players. The same DVD players that played previously burned DVDs using the same process. And - the navigation of the DVD seems to work fine, until selecting a button to play the clip.
Question: is quicktime trying to address possible copyright infringements with video usage in itunes by adjusting allowable settings when burning DVD's? My work is completely legit - I burn the DVD's of my video/film work, but I was wondering with all the video content available now on Itunes, it wouldn't be out of the question for quicktime to tighten their security. Just a thought.
    thanks again!

  • Combing Keynote, Motion and FCP. Best Strategy?

Ok Im trying to do a project where Im using Keynote content, Motion content and FCP content.
My final screen delivery will be on a flat screen plasma monitor with a native resolution of 852 x 480.
I am going to be playing this back as a looping Quicktime movie from a Mac to the plasma screen. The screen will be functioning essentially as a computer monitor.
The piece will only be about 3-4 minutes max run time.
The video I've shot is standard DV resolution: 720 x 480.
I am building the whole project at 852 x 480 so I dont have to scale up the video to fit the final screen size vertically.
I was intending to piece it all together in Motion.
(Exporting Quicktime renderings from Keynote and Final Cut at high resolution and placing them on the timeline in Motion...)
Now, with Motion and FCP's ability to transfer files back and forth, am I using the best strategy? Should the whole thing be assembled in FCP? Or is Motion just as good for assembly.
(I want to use Motion because I find it's interface way easier to push around than FCP and much less cryptic...)
Is there any slicker way to bring in Keynote material than to do the exporting to Quicktime thing?
Any advise I could get from all you motion gurus out there would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well after actually starting in on the real construction of this project it has become very obvious it must be assembled in FCP.
Now that I have resolved myself to that fact, I have a few issues:
I've exported all my Keynote stuff in Animation Codec.
Is that better than H.264? (Seemed to be slightly sharper on type edges)
I tried setting up the sequence to have H.264 compression but it refused to accept any imports.
I changed it back to NTSC DV Codec and it accepted to imports no prob.
Must all FCP projects use DV codec?
You cant tell them to use a different compression system?
(This is one of those areas of FC that I find utterly mysterious.)
When I bring the Keynote clips into my FCP document, they look crunchy.
    And they stumble on playback.
Is that just temporary in the editing environment.
The video plays back pretty clean...
Can I get all the files to play back cleanly in FC as Im working on them?
Will the compression used in my sequence be ignored upon export to the Final Quicktime?
And what's the deal with the frame rates on the Keynote files.
Even though I specified 29.97 on export, when I get info on the files theyre all over the place (20fps, 24fps...)
    Is that a problem?

  • JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP

Is there anyone out there using a JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP. Would like to hear what you have to say about file types, conversion, etc. Was hoping for a quicker download, but converting is taking about as much time as download tape. Any suggestions?

I "might" be able to help.
I, too have a JVC hard drive camera. Not the same model as you, and not HD, but still the same idea. One big difference between our cameras is that your camera creates a "TOD" file, and mine creates an "MOD" file. The difference between the two may void my advice, but I doubt it.
I had similar problems converting to a file useable by FCP. I finally called JVC, and they told me to get "Capty MPEG Edit EX". I dropped the fifty bucks and it works great. A little slow, but it works. I still think it's better than capturing tape.
I HAVE learned though that buying a hard drive camera was somewhat of a mistake. By compressing the video to be saved on the drive, we've already lost something. My needs don't require super high quality 3 CCD video, so it really doesn't matter that much for me. I don't know about your needs.
Secondly, I've downloaded a free program called MPEG Streamclip. It works great. It's a little quicker than Capty and it was free. Also, I took one of my MOD files and changed it to TOD, and it opened just fine. Also, when exporting with MPEG Streamclip, if you choose "Export To Quicktime", use the default "Apple Motion JPEG A" setting and choose "unscaled" for your video and 100% quality on your sound, there is no need to render in FCP. BIG time saver for me. Now, somebody that knows way more about this than I do could probably flame me and say I'm "converting crap to crappier" or something, but it looks pretty good to me, and it works for what I'm doing.

  • Compressor 2 and FCP 4.5 "background process" error

So I switched to my laptop which is running 10.4.11 and Compressor 2. I get "Cannot submit batch" Unable to connect to background process. I don't know if I should try the same proposed solutions that are suggested for the newer versions of the software? Any other suggestions?

    VAR,
    1. When you can spare another 5 min to solve your problem, instead of coming here and complaining about no one helped you (though Tom did offer a very direct response) you might take the time to read your DVDSP manual.
In it, you will discover that DVDSP is totally capable of converting quicktime movies to m2v and aif files. You have full control over all aspects of bitrate etc. Indeed, it is the same engine as in compressor. If you need an AC3 file, use A-Pack on the aif DVDSP will create.
    2. When you say compressor does not work, do you mean -A. it does not launch from within FCP or B. you can not launch it independently?
If it will launch independantly. export a reference QT file, open Compressor and have at it.
QT7 is a problematic issue with FCP4.5. The long term solution is to upgrade to FCP5 to go with 10.4 and QT7. They all fit together much more neatly.

  • FCP-just upgraded to tiger and FCP Studio-reports 'Missing FW connection".

I just finished upgrading 3 computers to OS 10.4.7 and FCP Studio, then installed all the obvious updates.
The first 2 computers, a G5 and G4, had no problems seeing and capturing video via FW.
The last computer, my primary workhorse, cannot find the tape device, a DSR 20. Upon clicking 'continue', to finish loading FCP, in A/V settings, the system reports the Apple FW is "missing". I've switched out the cable, then the tape devices, I've rebooted and thrown prefrence and plist files... etc...
Here's a weird thing, the controller in the log and capture window works fine to control the deck, but it won't pass or capture the video.
I'm getting ready to reinstall everything. Anybody have an opinion?
    Thank you,

    Power G5 2 x 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   3GB DDR2 SDRAM

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Consumer video and FCP

    Hi editors,
Is anyone familiar with the .mpg files that come from consumer video cameras--most likely the DVD camcorders?
I tried to convert in Quicktime to many formats, and the problem is:
FCP will NOT recognize the audio of any, including the original format.
I told my friend (favor video) that a consumer editing program might accept the formats... but maybe I could find a way to convert for FCP...
    Any thoughts?

I have a dvdcamcorder (got it for a client that had some dvd's he'd recorded on one without "finalizing" the disks). What I did was capture on a pc using the software that came with it (pc only and usb2 connections). I then brought the files over to the mac and did some simple editing in dvdsp without having to do any decompress/recompress.

  • Quicktime screen recording blurry in FCP X

I use both FCP 7 and FCP X but am making the permanent switch to FCP X.  I recently made a video in FCP 7 with screen recordings from Quicktime.  The quality looked perfect when I exported the finished video as an .mov.  However, I tried using the same clips in FCP X and found that the clips look blurry/low quality in the playback window and also when exported as an .mov.  I've played around with a few different export settings but none of them are resulting in a high resolution final product.  How do I get high quality screen recordings from Quicktime into Final Cut Pro X?  Should I be more scientific about the screen size/ratio than I needed to be in FCP 7?  Am I doing something wrong when importing the clips?

    That causes 'muddy' pics:
FCPX is basically meant for video = standards, e.g. 1080 or 720 ...
Screen-recordings, in 99% cases, are 'off'' those standard resolutions => 'un-even' scaling neccessary = loss of quality.
(plus, the harm added, to playback those files again in some 'uneven' scaling...)
    best-practice:
Use designated tools, as the widly recommended Screenfflow ...
    Plan B)
    … for the small budget:
learn how to create FCPX with custom resolutions ...

  • JVC HD30 and FCP

    Hi All
I'm thinking about buying a HDV-camcorder and set my mind to the JVC HD30. But I can't find that on this list (http://shedworx.com/?q=volmac-cameras ) of models that seem to work good with a mac. Does anyone has experience with the combination of this camcorder and FCP or FCE?
Thank you very much in advance

Actually, it's XDcam Ex in a .mov wrapper.
+An out-of-the-box GY-HM700 can record to inexpensive SDHC cards (class 6 or faster) as Quicktime .MOV using the XDCAM EX codec at selectable bitrates of 19, 25 or 35Mbps. The Mpeg-2 encoder is JVC’s, the XDCAM EX codec is licensed from Sony, and the Quicktime wrapper is licensed from Apple.+

  • Quicktime causes buffer overrun and does not work

I just tried to update to Quicktime 7 (7.0.4). It installs fine.
When I visit the movie trailers page on Apple.com
I try to play a clip and I get an error message that says buffer overun (trying to play keynote address in wuicktime application)
or an error message that says plugin performed an illegal operation and then it crashes my firefox browser.
It seems there are a lot of bugs with quicktime 7, I have tried standalone downloads of 7.0.3 and 7.0.2, they don't work either.
I have tried installing in safe mode and the installler will not work. what next?
do I actually have to reinstall windows to get it to work or do i have to go through the hassle of manually attempting to clear all of the clutter off of the hard drive and tinker with registry settings and try again?
Is there an explanation from APPLE to rectify these problems or will I just have to give up using your product?
Is there going to be a fix or is apple not supporting quicktime for windows anymore?
Too bad version 6 was messed with. It worked perfectly.

I'm having the exact same problem, since the upgrade this week.
iTunes does an immediate shutdown when it’s clicked. No errors are reported.
I automatically thought of Quicktime and when I clicked on it, I get a immediate shutdown as-well, but in Quicktime’s case I get an error window that states “Buffer Overflow error”.
I’ve tried to uninstall Quicktime from the Add/Remove programs in the Control panel. It flashes, does not report any errors and appears to be removing the program (Quicktime). But, when all is finished Quicktime remains in the Add/Remove programs list and it has not been removed.
Just to see what would happen, I installed Quicktime all by itself, and then tried to removed it VIA Control Panel. Same experiences (Quicktime remains in the Add/Remove programs list and it has not been removed).
I’ve removed iTunes a couple of times and tried to re-install (using defaults). Same problem exists (i.e. ‘Buffer Overflow error’).
I reinstall DirectX. Same problem exists (i.e. ‘Buffer Overflow error’).
Can Quicktime be removed manually? (i.e. delete files\directories, and Registry edits)?
Or is this just a nightmare to perform?
Does anyone have any other thoughts I can try?
