Quicktime 7.0.3 - any adverse effects?

Apple just released QT 7.0.3 via software update.
Has anyone updated and experienced and adverse effects with FCP 4.5 or 5.0.2?
I will update as soon as I am finished with my current project.

Brant,
Every major version increase has necessitated a re-purchase of the pro key.
If you're running Quicktime 6 Pro, and you upgrade to 7.0.3, you'll need to re-purchase.
If you're running 7.0.2 and upgrade to 7.0.3, you won't need to re-purchase.
If you have purchased a pro key for Quicktime 7, you won't need to re-purchase a pro key until Quicktime 8 comes out.

  • Any adverse effect of an expired SSL certificate

I wanted to understand if there are any adverse effects if the SSL certificate has expired. Going logically, the communication channel between server and client browser would not be secure. I would give an example to this, if the site is say https://www.xyz.com
    1) Would the site be accessible if the SSL certificate has expired, I guess yes?
    2) Any other adverse effects?
I hope, I have been able to explain the question clearly.
Requesting a reply to my query.
    Regards

Thanks for your update. It is connecting using https. The SSL certificate is not generated at OS (RHEL) level but is done most probably at Tomcat server level which I am trying to check from the developers.

  • IPv4 Backbone Baby Jumbo MTU size - any adverse effect?

    Hello.
Is there any complication or adverse effect, setting IPv4/MPLS backbone GE link MTU size bigger than the Ethernet De facto of 1500, in the ASR9000 IOX-XR 4.3.x? What would be practical size? 4470, 8192? We have customers request to set 1800 but too odd value. What is the value the ASR9K (Trident LC with RSP, not 440) and LCs supports?
    Much appreciate for your support.
    Thanks,
    Intopian.

That is correct Won, there are other advantages also as you noted.
    For routing protocols:
OSPF uses it to fill its DBD's do both sides need to ahve the same MTU size,
    same applies to ISIS.
RIP doesnt really care, although it can pack more updates in a single packet
BGP, using TCP, will use the MTU to adjust its MSS value so BGP benefits from this also big time.
As for delay on voip, yes theoretically, if the link speed is low enough, serialization delay of a large mtu packet may induce jitter on the high priority voip packet. But with 1500 bytes, the "fragment" size should be adjusted at 750k (so half T1 speed) only. With the majority circuits operating now at 1G, 10G etc, this fragment size requirement is almost no longer there as the serialization delay is so low at these speeds.
Other then very low end CPE's or very old devices that dont like larger MTU's (eg very old PA's in the 7200) there is really no worry anymore increasing the MTU size.
I dont think there is a formal doc on this, but I am sure if google it, you can find recommendations from other folks
on what they have done/seen etc.

  • Any adverse effects from singleton classes?

We're trying to decide whether it is a good/bad/indifferent idea to use
singleton classes in various places in an application (servlets, session
EJBs, BMP entity EJBs), in a clustered environment. Our app designers
have a number of different potential uses in mind, such as storing some
rarely changed data, and localised caches. We're happy with the
restriction that they obviously wouldn't be replicated. However, we're
not sure about what other implications there might be, especially when
the thing is scaled up. Questions that spring to mind include:
    - any inbuilt synchronisation that WL may do (if the singleton had to
dive off to a database to get some further info we wouldn't necessarily
want to have other callers to it synchronise at that point)
    - the effect on the JVM if we tie up some of its virtual memory
    - any other considerations
Note that they are considering using this technique in both the web app
and the ejbs (which will reside in different clusters).
Are there any guidelines available for the use of singletons,
particularly from a performance point of view?
    Thanks
    Chris

For caching in clustering, read only entity beans are best bet.
You must not bind a cach ( HashMap or soemthing) object in JNDI tree in
clustering. This could lead to mess as this binding is not cluster aware. You
might see conflict messages in your log file or your local bidning could fail
in one or other server depending upon timing.
Other than that as long as you don't have synchronization in singleton classes
that leads to deadlocks, there should not be a problem.

Also you could use JNDI as a data cache but be careful as it replicates

  • Using Field Blend plug-in, any side effects?

Cutting an HDV show with lots of action. Camera may have had 'sharpen' mode set too high, but end result is that the action scenes show way too much of the 'interlace lines' in playback on an LCD screen. Distractingly so.
I used the Field Blend plug-in from Joe's Filters on the whole show, and get a very smooth looking clean result. No interlace lines on LCD screen.
But! What I'm wondering is: will this have a negative effect when I output the HDV Quicktime master to MPEG2 and DVD?
Is there some side-effect one has to deal with when using the Field Blend plug-in?
    All ears, thank you,
    Ben

Are there any side effects of munging two fields
together? Yes. You are about halving your resolution.
The show works fine on an NTSC monitor. But the client will be showing it on a lovely new laptop, and also projecting it in a large cinema theatre.
The thing that puzzles me Patrick, is that I play both versions on a 23 inch Apple HD Cinema monitor and I cannot for the life of me see any difference, other than the 'blended' version is not full of interlace artefacting. I KNOW it's SUPPOSED to be less resolution. But I can't SEE any difference. Maybe on a 35 foot theatre screen?
Maybe Joe is doing something special with his plug-in?

  • Disk Utility: for bad blocks on hard disks, are seven overwrites any more effective than a single pass of zeros?

In this topic I'm not interested in security or data remanence (for such things we can turn to e.g. Wilders Security Forums).
I'm interested solely in best practice approaches to dealing with bad blocks on hard disks.
I read potentially conflicting information. Examples:
… 7-way write (not just zero all, it does NOT do a reliable safe job mapping out bad blocks) …
    — https://discussions.apple.com/message/8191915#8191915 (2008-09-29)
… In theory zero all might find weak or bad blocks but there are better tools …
    — https://discussions.apple.com/message/11199777#11199777 (2010-03-09)
… substitution will happen on the first re-write with Zeroes. More passes just takes longer.
    — https://discussions.apple.com/message/12414270#12414270 (2010-10-12)
For bad block purposes alone I can't imagine seven overwrites being any more effective than a single pass of zeros.
    Please, can anyone elaborate?
Anecdotally, I did find that a Disk Utility single pass of zeros seemed to make good (good enough for a particular purpose) a disk that was previously unreliable (a disk drive that had been dropped).

    @MrHoffman
As well pointed your answers are, you are not answering the original question, and regarding consumer device hard drives your answers are missleading.
Consumer device hard drives ONLY remap a bad sector on write. That means regardless how many spare capacity the drive has, it will NEVER remap the sector. That means you ALWAYS have a bad file containing a bad sector.
In other words YOU would throw away an otherwise fully functional drive. That might be reasonable in a big enterprise where it is cheaper to replace the drive and let the RAID system take care of it.
However on an iMac or MacBook (Pro) an ordinary user can not replace the drive himself, so on top of the drive costs he has to pay the repair bill (for a drive that likely STILL is in perfect shape, except for the one 'not yet' remaped bad block)
You simply miss the point that the drive can have still one million good reserve blocks, but will never remap the affected block in a particular email or particular song or particular calendar. So as soon as the file affected is READ the machine hangs, all other processes more or less hang at the same moment they try to perform I/O because the process trying to read the bad block is blocking in the kernal. This happens regardless how many free reserve blocks you have, as the bad block never gets reallocated, unless it is written to it. And your email program wont rewrite an email that is 4 years old for you ... because it is not programmed to realize a certain file needs to be rewritten to get rid of a bad block.
    @Graham Perrin
You are similar stubborn in not realizing that your original question is awnsered.
A bad block gets remapped on write.
So obviously it happens at the first write.
How do you come to the strange idea that writing several times makes a difference? How do you come to the strange idea that the bytes you write make a difference? Suppose block 1234 is bad. And the blocks 100,000,000 to 100,000,999 are reserve blocks. When you write '********' to block 1234 the hard drive (firmware) will remap it to e.g. 100,000,101. All subsequent writes will go to the same NEW block. So why do you ask if doing it several times will 'improve' this? After all the awnsers here you should have realized: your question makes no sense as soon as you have understood how remapping works (is supposed to work). And no: it does not matter if you write a sequence od zeros, of '0's or of '1's or of 1s or of your social security number or just 'help me I'm hold prisoner in a software forum'.
I would try to find a software that finds which file is affected, then try to read the bad block until you in fact have read it (that works surprisngly often but may take any time from a few mins to hours) ... in other words you need a software that tries to read the file and copies it completely, so even the bad block is read (hopefully) successful. Then write the whole data to a new file and delete the old one (deleting will free the bad block and ar some later time something will be written there and cause a remap).
Writing zeros into the bad block basically only helps if you don't care that the affected file is corrupted afterwards. E.g. in case of a movie the player might crash after trying to display the affected area. E.g. if you know the affected file is a text file, it would make more sense to write a bunch of '-' signs, as they are readable while zero bytes are not (a text file is not supposed to contain zero bytes)
    Hope that helped ;)

hey guyz.. i wanna ask if i get an updated version from itunes when i plug my iPhone into the Pc, i get a letter tells me that there is an update for your iPhone ... i wanna ask is it safe to download ?? and does it make any side effects on longTerm using ??

It is safe to download if your phone is not jailbroken. Before you download it, however, take some precautions:
    Reboot your computer
    Disable your antivirus and firewall
Connect the phone cable to a USB port directly on the computer, not a hub
Before updating right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "Backup"
When you are given the choice choose "Download only", not "Download and Update"
After the download completes successfully click the Update button to install it.
Most of these steps are just being overly cautious, as most people ignore them and have no problems. But occasionally the extra steps save grief.

  • Any side effects on JRE/JVM when setting Desktop Heap Size?

In Win2003 we experience a limitation of about 70 java.exe's. By setting the Desktop Heap Size we can increase this limit to more than double. Link showing more info on Desktop Heap Size:

  • Does it adversely effect the battery to keep the IPad plugged in when fully charged?

Does it adversely effect the battery to keep the IPad plugged in when fully charged?

Copied from Texas Mac Man ...
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Are there any ill effects for turning up brightness all the way?

Are there are any ill effects or long term effects if you turn up and leave the monitor's brightness at full? I'm not worried about the battery draining or anything, I'm just wondering if it wouldn't be as bright two years down the road compared to if just always left the brightness at it's automatic setting. Thanks for your help,
    Tom

Having your display at full brightness does speed up the natural decay of your display's maximum brightness over time. So, someone who has their display at 50% all of the time will have a better maximum brightness after two years than someone who had their display at 100% over the same period.
However, I would suggest you just use your display as you want to. I normally have mine at 75% as 100% is actually too bright for me.

  • Solid State upgrade: any negative effects

I'm considering replacing my 120GB Solid State hard drive in MacBook Pro with a 500GB SS Drive.  Are there any negative effects - for example on battery life, or in terms of overheating?

I've a 512GB Crucial m4 series SSD - and find that 512GB is plenty of room (of course, I do have a 2 TB 'working' external Thunderbolt drive, as well! Can't put everything on the 512GB!).
But I'm sure that one day there will be 1 TB SSDs - when that day comes, I may look at upgrading: if the price is right!

    Hi,
I'm not sure about any side effect if I change my computer's name (currently like 'first name last name MacbookPro'), e.g will time machine have any trouble with that? Would like to change to a shorter name.
Computer is in use since 2 years and everything works fine. Just tried to integrate sonos music system with my mac and have trouble sharing iTunes library with sonos. Therefore sonos support asked me to shorten the computers name and see if that helps.
To me seems more sth like permission problem on one of the folders above iTunes. Is there any logfile I could check to find out about access to files which permission settings don't allow?

  • Any detrimental effects on unhiding iPod_Control folder?

There are many guides on the internet which direct one to set folders to show hidden directories in order for music to be accessed on the iPod from a compy. Here's my issue.
On the computers I use during my classes, we're very restricted. I cannot install iTunes since I don't have the permissions. I can't eject the iPod properly since I don't even have those permissions. However, the more relevant issue is that I can't get to Options for folders, so I can't make hidden directories show.
During work with these computers, I'd love to be able to listen to my music while using my iPod as something akin to a jump drive. Since I can't do that, I'd love to be able to get to my music but I can't even do that since I don't have permissions to access folders directly through the address bar on Internet Explorer.
My question is this. At home, I can make "iPod_Control" hidden or unhidden. If I make it unhidden, will this have consequences to the iPod working, or?
    Dell   Windows XP

It won't really have any adverse consequences (unless you start making changes to the contents of the folder), but you might have a hard time navigating to the tracks you want.
iTunes renames the folders and filenames when they are synced to the iPod, making it very difficult to know what a track is by looking at the filename.
