Quicktime 7.1.5/Final Cut Pro 4.5 Image quality problems

Hi.
A lot of the time when I export .dv video into a lower quality video (.mov, .mp4) there are weird lines that appear in the motion. It's hard to explain, so I will post an image of it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/KhyronJinn/Screens%20with%20a%20purpose/Q uickTimePlayerScreenSnapz001.jpg
*Just tried again*
This happens with ANY export to any settings, even at the highest quality and almost identical hard drive space. I've also observed this problem when using still frames in Final Cut Pro, these lines of motion (I guess you could call them?) from one frame to another when extracted from a still. I'm at a complete loss here.

Use the De-interlace filter in FCP...If your using Compressor, best bet is to de-interlace in Compressor.

• What version of Quicktime is best for Final Cut Pro version 6.0.5?

Hello,
Could anyone tell me what version of Quicktime works best with Final Cut Pro version 6.0.5? Currently I have QT version 7.6.2.
Unfortunately, all the clips are digitizing at 640 x 480 instead of 720 x 480 (I have trashed prefs and checked the sequence settings and Easy Setup, both are set at NTSC 720 x 480). I have also completely re-installed FCP from the original disks.
When I digitize a clip, it digitizes at 640 x 480. When I open the clip itself and look at the properties, the "Presentation" is set to "Clean" (640 x 480) instead of "Classic" (720 x 480). It keeps defaulting to Clean, and therefore digitizing at 640x480.
Should I uninstall QT and go back to an earlier version? If so, which one would be best? Or is there an easier way to solve this problem?
Thank you in advance for any help. I've been struggling with this problem for over a week.

You list Sequence settings and Easy Setup, but is there any chance your Capture Preset somehow got tweaked to NTSC 4x3 (640x480), instead of it's normal setting of DV NTSC 3x2 (720x480)
From the extent of troubleshooting steps you've taken, this would be unlikely, but heck your Capture Preset and make sure it's correct.

• Quicktime 7.5 and Final Cut Pro is there a problem?

Quicktime 7.5 and Final Cut Pro is there a problem with this version of Quicktime?
i cant capture at all now! I can control my camera but no capture or footage in the window?
I can capture using IMovie fine!

Alister, there's no problem with it on my Mac, nor none that I know of ... I think you must have an install specific issue.
Check your camera setting matches your currently chosen Easy Setup ... in fact, close the Log and Capture window, then go ahead and re-choose the appropriate Easy Setup for your camera and I/O hardware, then choose View menu > Refresh A/V Devices, and then reopen Log and Capture ...
... still no go? if not then post pack with complete details of your hardware and software, your camera, the recording format, any I/O equipment that is in the mix etc.

• Quicktime playback error and Final Cut Pro

Hi,
I'm having a problem watching a quicktime movie that I made in Final Cut Pro. I'm working on a project at school and the computers there are all G5's. I put the film together at school and I exported the movie using the default settings in Final Cut for quicktime for the web at the medium bandwidth level. Part of the assignment is to post a clip from the film on for playback on the net. The film is playable on computers with quicktime 7 installed, like the ones at school or my PC which has the latest version of quicktime on it. But on my Ibook I only have quicktime 6.5.3. I have an older Ibook, it's a G3 700Mhz running OSX version 10.2.8. The latest version of quicktime requires 10.3.9+. When I click the link for the clip it loads on a new page and then gives me an error message saying quicktime is missing a component and it's not available to download, I click ok and the video appears as a white box with the playback controls at the bottom. The audio works fine but there's no picture.
Is there an update somwhere for quicktime 6 that will fix the problem?

How to Identify the file*, video and audio** format of a movie or sound file
In QuickTime Player
Open the file
Window menu > Show movie info
Look in the Format: field
Note that QuickTime Player may fail to display any audio information for some files.
In MPlayer OSX:
Show the playlist window if it isn't already visible.
Drag the movie file into the playlist window.
Select the movie in the list
Click the "i" button for info
In VLC
Open the movie in VLC
Window menu > Info
Click the black triangles so that they point down
Note that VLC does not display the file format, only the format of the content (audio and video) within the file. A file ending in .divx for instance, is probably in actuality an avi file but VLC doesn't show that information - MPlayer will and QuickTime Player will - if - QuickTime Player will open the file to begin with.

• HDC-SD9, iMovie 7.1.2, QuickTime 7.5, and Final Cut Pro

After I read the post, I tested it on my Mac. I can safely say that I can import videos from HDC-SD9 using iMovie and Final Cut Pro now.
Update to QuickTime 7.5 and iMovie 7.1.2 to make this camera work with the Mac.
It seems to be working with Final Cut Pro too.

That sounds promising! I will install the update tonight and let you know if the same goes for me!

• Every video put into Final Cut Pro exports in horrible quality regardless of format/settings.

Hello fellow Mac enthusiasts,
I'm having a problem which may or may not have been plaguing my studio since day one. Every video that we edit in Final Cut Pro exports in MUCH lower quality than it was when it was imported, not only that, the file size of the newly exported video is several times the size of the original. What I end up getting is a file too large for our clients to email around. We recently had a client come into our studio with a flash drive full of 15 second avi's no larger than 900 KB, he wanted a few of them edited together with simple cross fade transitions, and even a few seconds of dead space cut out. He needed them to be the highest quality possible for a powerpoint presentation he may now be unable to give. At first I exported them as Uncompressed avi's, best quality, thousands of colors, and no sound. The resulting file was not only blurrier, but now 260.5 MB!! And that one was with zero edits! The original was 803 KB and crystal clear. So after that I decided to try a few tests. We also produce a bi-weekly hour-long local television show, which looks fine on television but now I'm wondering how much better it could and should look. I've been exporting that out as a Quicktime, Apple ProRes 442 HQ, Interlaced bottom-field-first, zero filters, both compressor native and NTSC 720 X 480. I attempted this method on the client's original 803 KB with zero edits and not only did it export a completely unusable video compared to the original, but it was now 57.1 MB. What is going on here? Is Final Cut conspiring against me? I'm guessing it's something in my settings which I'll shamefully admit I know absolutely nothing about. Could anyone help a struggling video editor do his job?
Joey

Hey guys sorry it took me song long to respond it's been a busy week filled with many things not relating to final cut...
In response to David's post, the original file is indeed larger than 720X480, though it's dimensions are not available to see in the 'more info' associated with the file itself. By comparison, the apple pro res LT file I exported through final cut of the same avi file is 720X480, and looks significantly worse.

This was after I created a new project, made the sequence settings into Apple ProRes lt 30p under the audio/video settings in Final Cut, and exported it as the same with 'current' dimensions (it was listed as 850X637, maybe that was the original?) Although I did have to render the original avi itself once it was placed in the timeline. I guess there's no way to know exactly what sort of avi my original file is so I can match my sequence to it? The 'more info' (to be fair im sort of used to 'properties') leaves something to be desired..
I guess my question is: what else can I change in my settings to leave the quality of the video intact, if anything?
Thanks everyone.

• Final Cut Pro exports very low quality video to DVD

I tried exporting a timeline to a DVD from Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 today. Every clip in the timeline was 1080x1920, but the DVD export menu insisted (without offering an option to change settings) that Final Cut export at 720x480. The Blu-Ray menu offers 1080x1920 exporting, though. Is there any way to get the app to export to DVDs at 1080x1920?

Yes, you can create an AVCHD Disc which is basically Blu-ray quality on a cheapo standard DVD.
Select Share>Blu-ray and in the window that opens make sure the Output Device is your DVD burner, not the hard drive.
Note that you will only get about 35 minutes at the highest quality.
If your video is longer the data rate will be reduced but should still produce good quality hi-def up to an hour or so.
You must play the DVD in a Blu-ray player. It will not work in a normal DVD player.

• Final Cut Pro 7 to X Export Problem

Hello,
I'm using the Final Cut Pro 7 to X app to try and get XML files from 7 to X. However I keep getting this error message.
>final cut pro 7 to x error this item is not on an edit frame boundary<
I did some research on this but there doesn't seem to be much information on this topic.
Is anybody familiar witht this problem?
Trey

I've had experience wiith using 7toX and never had that message. Have you tried contacting the developer? My guess is they would be responsive.

• Final Cut Pro Causing Hearing Damage *Big Problem*

I've been experiencing a unique problem where I'm editing / playing footage back and out of nowhere a very loud blatting noise erupts from Final Cut Pro. When I'm wearing headphones the noise is catastrophic and I immediately I have to take the headphones off because I'm reeling in pain from it- it's so loud my ears keep ringing for about 5-10 minutes. It's happened about 5 times now over the course of 6 months. No rhyme or reason to it.
At first I thought it was an internal soundboard thing because it first came from my MacBook Pro (2.53 ghz core 2) when I was using FCP 6, not doing anything fancy just editing with an external drive + headphones. It's happened about 4 times on that machine in about 6 months, just randomly.
Then today I was editing with FCP 7 on my other machine (iMac 2.4ghz core 2 duo) and the noise happened again on the iMac, different project, different external hard drive, just playing back regular footage. So apparently this problem is software-based because it's happened on 2 machines, all different projects, all during playback (not doing any audio editing). Luckily I wasn't editing with headphones on but the sound emitted a huge BLAT from the iMac's internal speakers that was so loud that it scared me. All instances I've re-started FCP and my machine and all software has been up to date. So I have no idea what is causing this.
I took a screenshot of the blat because it registered on FCP's audio levels even though it is not there in the audio track, but I can't seem to post the screenshot here on the message boards.
Anyone ever experience this before? Does Apple know / care about this problem? Seems like people could definitely sue over this for hearing damage....

Happened today on my new Macbook Pro, 15-inch i7 while editing in final cut. Has happened several times before this, as well. Never had this problem while editing on other computers, including an older Macbook Pro and also a 2.26 Ghz dual Quad Core tower.
The clip that caused the blowout had the following audio: 16-bit integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 19.2 Khz.
My sequence settings for audio are currently 16-bit, 48 Khz, Channel grouped.
Please get around to fixing this, folks at Apple. I work as an editor and I currently can't wear headphones for fear of blowing out my eardrums.

• Final Cut Pro 10.1.2 update problem: shared items all deleted.

I upgraded from Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 today to 10.1.2. I've been working with 10.1.1 for a few weeks without problems and sharing videos. After the upgrade to 10.1.2 all the shared items that had been held within the "Shared items" folders have vanished and I cannot find them anywhere! Has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like a rudimentary question but how do you roll back to teh previous version?
You would need to restore from a system back-up.

Final Cut automatically updated on our video iMac overnight and now keeps bombing whenever we attempt to do access any files.
Change your App Store Preferences so that you make the decision about what gets updated and when.

• Final Cut Pro 7.02 - Importing Clip Problem

I tried searching for this but no help; I'm having trouble importing a clip into FCP but in the timeline and canvas, the last few seconds are mysteriously gone. In the screenshot link below, the information of the clip will show that it's 7:29 but in FCP the length is 7:14.
http://a.imageshack.us/img832/7708/screenshot20100827at715.png
I'm just wondering, the clip is in ProRes 422 and over 9GB; is there a max. file size for FCP for importing clips that's causing this?
Thanks in advance!

You used iShowU didn't you? Yeah, you have to either conform the clip to the frame rate you are going for (If you recorded 30fps, conform it to 30fps or 29.97). iShowU imports into FCP, because there is no "timecode track", tend to get lost.
Or, load it into the Viewer, and export as a self contained movie, then import that into FCP.
ScreenFlow is MUCH better at this.

• Final Cut Pro 7 Import Mp4 File Problem

Help! I have been using FCP 7 for some time now and all of a sudden I cannot import an Mp4 file. I get a file error saying the FCP does not recognize the file? I have been importing and using Mp4 files all along. I can't find any setting in FCP that would address this problem?

FCP doesn't work with MP4 (or H.264) files natively.   Sometimes they work, but it wasn't designed to do so.  For a list of the formats that FCP does work with natively, look at the Easy Setup list.  Create your Sequence using one of those then convert the MP4 file to to match that prior to importing it into your FCP project.
