Quicktime 7.1.5. slow load on avi files

Hi
Apologies if this has been posted before.
I downloaded the update of Quicktime, I also have pro installed, and it takes FOREVER, if at all, for anything to play. My macbook sounds like it is going to explode with the effort of getting anything to play.
If anyone can help that would be great.

  • Why does my quicktime player verson 10.2 somtimes read avi files and other times it wont recognize them?

Why does my quicktime player version 10.2 sometimes read AVI video and other times it will not recognize that same file. I have a video card that sometimes it will read then the next time it recognizes the card but will not open the video. Message says "quicktime does not recognize this file.
Whats up with that ??? Any help will be most appreciated!

AVI is a container just like MKV, WMV, MOV, and MPEG. It is possible to use many different compression formats aka. codecs in an AVI container.
Think of the container - AVI as being an envelope, and the compressed video in it as a letter. The letter may be in a language you cannot read even though you know how to open the envelope.
Historically QuickTime did have some built-in ability to use AVI files and some formats in those files, this used to be further improved by installing the free Perian (for Mac only). However with Mavericks Apple have removed the ability for QuickTime X aka. QuickTime Player 10 to use AVI files, it now really only accepts MPEG4 or H.264.
It is still possible to install QuickTime 7.6.6 in Mavericks and if you use it and Perian rather than QuickTime X you can still use various AVI files.
Note: Mavericks also now no longer shows previews or thumbnails for AVI files for the same reason.

  • Quicktime much slower to open AVI files

For the past month or so, Quicktime has been taking over a minute to open .avi files - this never used to be the case, but it has been doing this on both my iMac and my mac mini. Do you have any thoughts as to what might be causing this?

    http://perian.org
Free. Try it on your AVI's.

  • How do I disable Quicktime for being my default player for .avi files?

When I click on a .avi file, quicktime always tells me it's unable to open it because it needs a plugin. So I use VLC media player b/c it's hassle free. When I open an avi file, I select the "always open with" option when I choose VLC. Unfortunately, I have to do that for every single avi file I put on my computer. How do I get Quicktime to stop being my default player for .avi files only? I still prefer it to be my default player, but just not .avi files.

Thanks for the link. Is this perian prefpane all I need to maximize my quicktime experience? Basically, will I never EVER see a "quicktime can't open this..." message again? Can I delete VLC media player now?
Also, what the heck is the point of the Eject button in the top right corner of the keypad. When I tried ejecting the perian "disc" that I got from opening the .dmg, it didn't work. Is that button only good for ejecting actual discs from the cd/dvd rom?

  • Why PE7 crashes after loading faulty avi file

Hi - Problem on this Vista Home Premium system and PE7 occurred after loading a faulty avi file. Now every time a new project is started a blank icon appears where the files usually reside. Just clicking on this icon causes a white flash, the screen changes to white and the program is being crashed. This occurs even after two clean reinstall of PE7. So I figure this faulty file resides somewhere in one of the program files but cannot figure where and why it is picked up on a brand new project causing the program to be unusable until restored to it's original state. I use PE7 along with PSE6. Everything was working fine until this happened. Any ideas why ?
    Thanks for your help.
    Phil

I'm sorry, Phil. I'm still not sure how your whole system got corrupted, even if your AVI was bad. But, if you were capturing AVIs from a Canon HV in DV Lock mode, I don't see how even the AVI was bad! So something odd is going on that must run deeper than just a corrupt file.
Assuming there's nothing out of the ordinary that you're not telling me (like that you're editing on a second or external drive or that you're working on a home-built system), I'm rather stumped.
Try holding down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys on the left side of your keyboard as you launch the program. This often clears corruptions in the program.
You can also go to C:/DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS/ALL USERS/APPLICATION DATA/ADOBE/PREMIERE ELEMENTS and delete -- or just rename -- the 7.0 folder. In case this, too, has corrupted, the program will recreate it.
Meantime, you say you've reinstalled the program. You can try uninstalling the program then deleting the C/PROGRAM FILES/ADOBE/PREMIERE ELEMENTS 7.0 completely -- just to ensure the program is completely removed. Then reinstall it clean.
As I've said, version 7 is a pretty stable build. Corruptions and problems with it are rare. I assume you maintain your computer, keep the operating system up and date and regularly defrag your drive(s) and run a virus scanner.
The FAQs to the right of this forum detail my regular maintenance regimen. I also walk you through it in my books.

You do want to eliminate every possible cause. Sorry. I know that's no fun.

  • Page not found, slow loading times CC Files

    Hi,
Two weeks ago I reported that there were CC files problems like 'page not found' errors and slow loading times and pages not even showing anything. Those problems were temporarily resolved but are back as of today.
Please fix this because for me this is not workable and I guess for many others. I've already moved part of my design files away from CC Files and am now reaching the point were I want to abandon this beta-ware altogether.
I'm living in Europe, maybe this gives additional info. Maybe server problems only in this continent?
    Thanks for looking into this.
    Jan

So what product would you advice me to file this bug report under? There is no Creative Cloud Files entree or similar.
I'm not sure I'm taken by Adobe support channels policies. if I tweet a complaint some employee tell me I'll be called back by support. Instead of being called back I get asked per email to report on the community forums, when I post on the forum someone tells me to file a bug report. Ehhh...
    Time to move on.

  • Quicktime 7.5.5 slow load time

I recently decided to clean install leopard with the new 10.5.6 just to keep things fresh.
i found that after updating everything quicktime dosent load instantly like before, it takes 5-6 bounces. and even after loading quicktime and quitting reentering takes again the same time etc..
Thought maybe had bad install and reinstalled quicktime 7.5.5, reformatted same thing.
I used Pacifist to downgrade quicktime to 7.2 - worked, quicktime worked as i knew it to.
reinstalled 7.5.5 - slow again. So i started removing plugins from the quicktime system folder, taking out quicktimecomponents.component did the trick, it loads faster but quicktime cant play movies now.. so i switched it with the quicktimecomponents.compnent file from the 7.2 install and viola its all working and fast.
so to conclude for some reason the current 7.5.5 install on apples site has a crappy quicktimecomponents.component file. also i know that 7.5.5 used to have a normal one since prior to the format i had 7.5.5 and it worked fine.
    What's going on?
    Quicktime 7.5.5 (995.22.3)

No, you have not read my post in the right order if you came to that conclusion. I did a clean install for entirely different reasons. When i reinstalled everything i noticed quicktime was behaving weirdly, it took long to open initially - when before it was instantaneous, and even after the first load when i closed quicktime and reopened it took the same long time - Programs open faster the second time because of cached memory right?
I dare you to download the current 7.5.5 Quicktime on the apple server and reinstall and tell me if i'm wrong
When i played with quicktime it was after the problem not before it, and playing with it made it better not worse. Please re-read what i did emphasizing on the problem not my formatting habits.

  • Firefox 3: QuickTime Poster Movie does not load QT media file when clicked

I have a video podcast website (thomasbrin.com) that uses the the Apple-provided JavaScript utility and the QTWriteOBJECTXHTML function call on each of my podcast episode webpages to automatically generate the proper object and embed tags. The page loads with a poster movie which, when a user clicks on, should connect to the podcast media file and begin playback.
This coding technique works fine in Safari and IE but fails in Firefox. Instead, when a user clicks on the poster movie, nothing happens. No errors are generated, the webpage just remains unchanged.
This issue came to my attention from a viewer of my video podcast. I loaded Firefox 3 and am having the same issue my viewer reported.
You can visit this page to see the issue directly: http://www.thomasbrin.com/GOT3mov.html Load the page in Firefox 3 and click on the poster movie.
I've verified that on my system the QuickTime plugin is properly installed and Javascirpt is enabled in Firefox.
I have searched the Firefox and Apple support forums but have come up empty. Any ideas?

Okay, problem solved. And, of course, it was a very simple solution.
Baby Boomer, if you read this post would you please retest this page (http://www.thomasbrin.com/GOT3mov.html) in Camino and let me know if it works for you now.
The issue with the Camino browser got me thinking about the differences between the Gecko rendering engine (used by Firefox, Camino, SeaMonkey, and more) and the WebKit rendering engine used by Safari. I realized that Safari may be better at inferring MIME types than Firefox et al. In other words, since the target file in my Javascript script is clearly a QuickTime file (it has a .mov extension after all), Safari implicitly assumes the correct MIME type. On the other hand, Gecko-based browsers may be more strict and require an explicit reference to a MIME type for certain media files (like QuickTime) to load properly.
So, all I did was add an attribute pair to my script that declares the proper media MIME type and it works.
Here's my old script (without the script tags):
    QTWriteOBJECTXHTML('BrinPoster2.jpg','640','376','',
    'HREF','http://www.thomasbrin.com/QTEncodings/GOT3NS.mov',
    'TARGET','myself',
    'CONTROLLER','False');
Here's my new script (without the script tags):
    QTWriteOBJECTXHTML('BrinPoster2.jpg','640','376','',
    'HREF','http://www.thomasbrin.com/QTEncodings/GOT3NS.mov',
    'TARGET','myself',
    'TYPE','video/quicktime',
    'CONTROLLER','False');
The explicit MIME type made the difference.

  • AVI files in quicktime

i tried to load an avi file in quicktime but a window popped up that i needed additional software, downloaded all the softwares and none of them worked.
i use ffdshow for my codecs, i dont know why it wont start up when i choose to open the avi file in quicktime, when i open the avi's with windows media player 2 icons 1 for video and other for audio shows down in the right corner.
i need it to work with version 7 or newer cause thats the only media player photoshop cs3 extended is compatible with.

so i assume i should contact support about this or what?

  • Quicktime 7.5 update, no audio in avi

Just "updated" my quicktime pro, and have lost audio for avi files, worked fine before update. I see this is not an isolated problem, LOTS of posts on the mac side. Apparently no support from apple on issues such as this? No testing before release?
Can I remove quicktime and reload the earlier version?

I had the same annoying problem and Apple rarely offers support in a timely fashion (if at all) so don't bother waiting for an answer from them. Here's a very easy solution that should do the trick:
    - Quit Quicktime.
    - Download and install Perlian from http://perian.org/ (it's free open source goodness!)
    - Open your avi file and enjoy hearing your movie once more.
Yep, that's it! As long as your movie's audio is still intact when played in VLC or Windows Media Player, this fix should work. Best of luck!

  • Playing avI files on QuickTime

I'm new to Mac and QuickTime and I can't open some AVI files in QuickTime that I downloaded. I want to use the downoaded AVI files in iDVD to create a DVD movie.

    1. I think VLC, 3ivx® D4 CODEC, MPlayer these player all can help U to play avi on mac, and if you still want to play avi files on quicketime, maybe you should install *_DivX for Mac CODEC_*.

  • Droplets and AVI files

    Hi Folks
Just wondering if anyone has had any success using droplets with AVI files. I do a lot of AVI to MOV conversion and Compressor will load the AVI file when the full program is running, but I can't drop the file on a droplet. Is this even possible or is it just a limitation of the program?
    Sean

Droplets should work the same as if you encoded from within Compressor. What you need to understand is that there is that AVI and MOV are CONTAINERS which can contain any number of different CODECS. Compressor and Qmaster are limited to codecs.
Open your AVI files in Quicktime Player, press Command I to Get Info and post back with the format details of these particular files.

  • Avi file won't import into Premiere CS4 after re installing

Recently I purchased a new PC (Windows 7 64 bit, i7 processor). I re installed Premiere Pro CS4 and copied over my project files from my old system (Windows Vista 64 bit, AMD quad core processor). I attempted to load a project that was created on the old system, which contained an avi file that was done in AE CS5, the avi file was not downloaded from a camera. When Premiere kept locking up when I attempted to load the project, I finally figured out that it was getting hung up trying to load this avi file. After further investigation, I found that the avi file wouldn't play using any type of player, including WM Player, and DivX player. Funny enough, QT played the file, but only after a delay of about 10 minutes before opening. All of the posts I've seen on the forums indicate codec issues. I've installed three different codes, and used gspot to inspect the file and it indicated "no codec needed".
I must reiterate that on my old system, the file was created in AE CS5 and exported as an avi, and works fine.
    Can anyone shed some light

Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... A screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

  • Please help! Playing .avi files in QT Pro

I have installed Perian, been to the Apple Store, and searched high and low for the answer, but cannot figure out how to play .avi files in QuickTime Pro. It's only some .avi files (not all), I can hear the background noise, but the screen is black. Please tell me how to remedy this.
    Thank you,
    Thom

'avi is simply a container that can contain any number of different video codecs. Most, but not all, can be played on a Mac.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.2.1 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.6.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
Note that Adobe requires you to uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, as mentioned here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1
using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.

  • Can't Play AVI files (revisited)

I have installed both the DivX and Perian bundles and I am still get the white frame in QuickTime when I try to play an AVI file. Does anyone have any solutions on how to get AVI files to play in QuickTime?
My workflow is this... I have created uncompressed Animation codec QuickTime movies in After Effects. I then open them up in QuickTimePro and they play just fine. I then export to my client's preferred format, AVI. I've done this in the past with success, but now in QuickTime 7.6 they do not work. Even the files I exported 6 months ago that played fine at that time, now will not play, showing only the white frame. Below are the specs on each file.
My original After Effects rendered QuickTime movie is:
    Inspector
    Format: Animation codec, 12320 x 24, Millions
    FPS: 29.97 fps
    Data Size: 358.55 MB
    Data Rate: 100.05 mbits/s
    Duration: :30 seconds
    Properties
    Format: Animation
My QuickTimePro exported AVI file is:
    Inspector
    Format: " codec, 12320 x 24, Millions
    FPS: 29.97 fps
    Data Size: 762.20 MB
    Data Rate: 212.68 mbits/s
    Duration: :30 seconds
    Properties
    Format: (none listed)
I suspect the AVI codec format of " may have something to do with this issue, but what does " mean and how do I fix "

Why do you need AVI? It is an out of date container and QuickTime Pro only supports a few codecs in its exports.
762 MB's for a 30 second file? Data rate that exceeds most modern machine playback ability.
DivX and Perian are not involved in your export.
Examine the export dialog window and find out which video codec you used in your file.
