Quicktime 7.1.6 broke my iMovieHD?!?

I applied the Quicktime 7.1.6 update a few days ago and ran into a weird problem with iMovieHD. I can build a movie okay and play it but, as soon as I click the "chapters" button to edit my movie, the video stops playing. The sound is fine but whatever frame happened to be displaying when I hit "chapters" is the only one that will show, no matter how I move the scrubber. If I save and reopen, it's fine, even showing the chapter marker I'd last entered. However, as soon as I hit "chapters" again, it stops playing again.
I've done the usual things with permissions and plists and nothing helped. The QT update was the only thing that changed between imovie working and failing.
I signed on as a different user and had the same problem, so it's not a local setting. I then booted off a different disc with only vanilla OSx 10.4.9 on it, WITHOUT the QT update. I ran imovie from my normal drive and was able to edit the previously-failing movie just fine. That seems to eliminate the file, application and everything but the QT update from the equation.
And then, being the ex-software-geek I am, I applied the QT 7.1.6 update to that alternate system and tried imovie again. As I'd expected, it failed just as before.
So...any ideas? Thanks.
Meanwhile, how do I remove QT 7.1.6 from my main system so I can work from there? Apparently it's not safe to just delete everything that looks like a QT-related file and then apply the 7.1.5 updater. (Heh....)

I have never tried this, but...
How to downgrade QT?
Solution
This is how you can downgrade QuickTime 7.1.6 to version 7.1.5:
1. Download Quicktime 7.1.5 installer:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime715formac.html
2. Mount the installer package. This is very important.
3. Download and install Pacifist from this location:
http://www.charlessoft.com/
4. Run Pacifist. In its dialog press the "Open Package" button. Browse for the .PKG file in the mounted package. In the appearing list Right Click on the .PKG and from the context menu choose "Install To Default Location". Please note that if you mistakenly select the unmounted .DMG file into Pacifist instead of the PKG, there will be an installation but without an effect.
5. Check in the "User Administrator Privileges" checkbox. Press Install.
6. When asked tell the installer to replace the already existing files. Do this with all the files.
7. When the install process is finished restart the computer.
8. Run the QuickTime 7.1.5 installer package again WITHOUT Pacifist and let it install the files again.
9. Restart the computer

  • Quicktime 7.4 (92) broke subtitles support with Perian with Leopard 10.5.1

After installing the latest quicktime update iI'm not able anymore to display subtitles cointained in a .srt file using Perian 1.0

I've had the same problem on Tiger after upgrading QT. You may be able to fix it by downloading/installing the Front Row Trailers pref pane:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24116/front-row-trailers
Once installed, it lets you update Perian, and then the subtitle problem seems to go away. (So far...I haven't done much since installing it.) The interesting thing is the Perian site still has version 1.0, but the above update produces version 1.0.0.2, though I don't know where it went. Anyway, it seems to work and I didn't have to downgrade QT.

  • Quicktime x broke

Ok, so I've had an issue for some time now, I've resorted to using VLC.......
So quicktime seems to be broke, I've even reinstalled the OS Lion.....  I still have issues playing quicktime movies, mostly .AVI's but apple trailers won't load either when I download them, they will play if I just stream them....  Now when I have the .AVI issue, I can get the little preview to play if you hit the play button on the icon.....  But when I load quicktime and hit the play button, nothing happens....  I can also drag the timeline to any point in the movie and it shows, but when I hit play it won't play.....   I installed the latest perian codec but still nothing seems to work...  this has gone on for months.....  I need quicktime to work, I dunno what else to do.....

  • Took Quicktime Update - now Microsoft Office Products fail to start

I took the latest Quicktime 7.2 update today. Now my Microsoft applications won't start up! I use my Mac at work and without Word I'm screwed. How can I get my office products to run again? QuickTime 7.0.4 broke applications, now 7.2 is breaking them. What's the deal with QuickTime???
I'm going to have start doing the Microsoft "wait" with my Mac now. "Not take ANY updates for at least a week from release", because the updates cause more issues than the old versions. This is VERY frustrating.

OK, I'm back up and running.
Another thread had some information from bigman13 that provided a solution. It appears that most (not all) of the people having this problem had also installed Java6 beta. If you are one of those people, here is a solution that might help you. Caution - this involves performing steps from a command shell.
I think you must have a root account enabled to do this. If you don't and wish to enable it, select the "Help | Mac Help" menu item from your desktop screen and type in "root account". Select the "Enabling the root user" entry and follow those instructions.
    Steps to fix the problem:
    1) Open a Terminal window and type...
    2) su -
    3) cd /Library/Receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg/Contents
    4) lsbom -s -f Archive.bom > /tmp/files
    5) Now edit the /tmp/files file with a text editor and replace " " with "\ " and all "./" with "rm /" - Resave the file
    6) From the terminal again: sudo bash /tmp/files
    7) rm -r /Library/Receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg
    8) sudo update_prebinding
    9) I rebooted my Mac
    10) Test that Word runs again - Mine Did!
    11) I then reinstalled Java6
    Hope this helps

  • Quicktime 7.1 and OS X 10.3.9

I would like to register my displeasure over the Quicktime 7.1 update. This is basically a security update and, like Quicktime 7.04, it broke a number of Java applications. However Quicktime 7.04 was released five months ago. Why were these issues not fixed ? In particular, I am unable to reinstall Maple 10, which uses InstallAnywhere. This issue was fixed promptly on OS X 10.4.
I feel that you are purposely breaking the platform in order to get people to upgrade. I do not buy products that stop working for no valid reason. Please fix this issue, so that I can get on with my work.
    iBook G4 1GHz / 768MB.   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Roman Pearce,
The Discussion Forums are not "read" by Apple per se and the best place to voice your feelings about a problem with the OS that you are encountering is perhaps best left through the Apple's Mac OS X Feedback page.
I know you must be frustrated by the problems you are encountering but the above link is the best place to post this feedback.
    hope that helps some,
    littleshoulders [:-)
PS. There may be someone here that could help you troubleshoot the issue, if possible, and will post in with some suggestions to help. I'm sorry I did not myself have the problem you describe as I do not use the application you mention so was not effected by the same problem with the update/s.

  • Won't install OS from Tiger disk.

MacBook 1.1 667MHz Intel upgraded to OS X 10.4.11. Need to downgrade* to OS X 10.4.10. Took out trusty Tiger install disk (legally purchased from Apple, black, grey X, version 1.4) pop it into MacBook and MacBook won't boot up from disk (option, command-., "C", nothing works.)
So, I read "Help" that says to double-click on installer icon. Dialog box pops up: "Mac OS X 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine...."
Question: How can I "Archive and Install" OS X 10.4.10 on my OS X 10.4.11 MacBook?
Please speak slowly, I am hard of understanding.
    RGH
*QuickTime 7.3.1 broke Flash, which I have to have.

Perhaps I have forgotten, but I don't recall - and can't find - any Intel/MacBook-specific install disks that came with the computer. Should I have had these? If I can rummage through the attic and find it/them, can I "Archive and Install" just like a PPC machine?

  • Boris Calligraphy, Title 3D, and Final Cut Express HD 3.5

    Help!!
So I'm working through Tom Wolsky's book (Final Cut Express HD 3.5 editing workshop) and I just got to lesson 12 to work with Title 3D. Well when I go to start the lesson, I try to call up the Title 3D from the generator menu in the viewer. The pop-up displays all the different selections except for Boris/Title 3D. I can't find it anywhere on the program. I've searched in my preferences folder on my HD and I noticed that the BorisFX plugins where installed and that Title 3D (in the Final Cut Express preferences folder) was also there. I've tried discarding the plugins and reinstalling them and that doesn't even seem to work. Does anyone have any idea why my FCE will not let me access Title 3D? Anyone else come across this problem? Tom, what do you think?

I tried reinstalling - no joy.
After some digging around on Google I found this forum post:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/15/857437
Looks like the QuickTime 7.4 update broke a number of things including the Boris plug-ins. Basically they have lost their bundle flags so are not being recognised by Final Cut Express (or Pro). If you look at one of the replies to the above post there's a link to a file you can download which contains plug-ins with the bundle flag set - here's a direct link to the file:
    http://www.borisfx.com/download_files/CalligraphyForFCP.dmg
Just copy the Title 3D.bundle and Title Crawl.bundle files to the following folder, overwriting the existing ones:
    /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Express Support/Plugins
This fixed the problem for me.

  • QuickTime 7.3 Javascript and Safari 3.0.4 on MAC OS X 10.4.11 is BROKE

*UNBELIEVABLE lack of QA on APPLE's part!!!* I am totally embarrassed by this, guys... I've been successfully using the embedded object method of instantiating QT movies since May of 2007 on Safari first; and Firefox, et al browsers second. Safari was the clear winner when it came to movie file load times, and blew away number two(firefox); but recent releases(in the past couple of weeks) have broken their own browser by displaying a sad little 'Q' logo instead.
To add insult to injury, I am developing a RIA(Rich Internet App) that relied on this H.264 decoder's ability to run reverse rate speeds of -2x, -4x, and -8x like a champ. Now, sadly; that TOO is broken and only reverse rates of anything > -1 and < 0 seem to work. Did I mention I delved into the Javascript code in AC_QuickTime.js and found even more embarrassing code to report. I didn't use these functions, because I chose to procedurally create DOM child nodes in JavaScript to do the work of adding in <object><embed></embed></object> structures, and APPLE uses a sophomoric technique of building up a concatenated string of literal XHTML4 code. Okay, so that's not as big a problem as them BREAKING the tool; but it might be a hint into the quality of staff they employ to provide these interfaces to us.
Sooooo. What's next, ya'll? I need to move on, and will; but I sure hope someone will help cattle prod these guys into better QA upon subsequent releases; and please keep me advised of when the fix finally arrives. Sorry about the rant; but these type of goofs could've been avoided in my humble, but vocal opinion.

Hello Again. I'm back after referring to the web page you sent me, fellow Texian; and appreciate your time. I dug into this section of text with a fine tooth comb, and discovered this was written for IE-centric developers; which I'm guessing you might be first. I'm a SAFARI first kind of dude, just because I'm too lazy to use anything else to get started on my MACBOOK PRO. I see the explanations of what you refer to(and the documentation refers to as "external"), but it's still a function call in the AC_JavaScript.js file, which I've seen before. EMBED is STILL ALIVE and in use here, FYI.
Nothing was different about my usage, except that I attacked the problem from a lower level.... BUT... I DID find one subtle thing that I had been getting away with since last May 2007; and Safari's JavaScript interpreter just let me do it. In the OBJECT tag, the use of PARAM was being used for the SRC argument. So, I dug into my JAVASCRIPT BIBLE(6th edition) authored by Danny Goodman et al, and in the Bonus Chapter section here is what I'd like to share:
The PARAM is considered an ODD CASE, per the authors, and it is uniquely passed to Applets, plug-ins, and activeX controls, as one would do on the server side using JAVA NATIVE INTERFACE calls from JAVA to a compiled DLL or SHARED OBJECT file. SWIG is another example of interpretive interfaces to native code methods and variables. The authors go on to say you can't really get to them with JavaScript calls, or alter them because of this uniqueness and the fact that they are bound at load time only. So, you MUST use PARAM and not Attribute or Property because they are truly different; and it's the way that APPLE provides the interface to their decoder we know and love as QuickTime. APPLE just fixed their oversight and tightened the restrictions on this in their latest release, and my old code was made to adhere to the W3C standard all of a sudden.
I went into my DOM node method and changed the element to be of type PARAM, and everything I knew to have worked before was suddenly reinstated. What's odd is how this misapplication of attribute allowed FIREFOX on MAC OS X to load, play, pause, and FF without error, but exhibited the reverse rate problem only -- that's too weird.
In closing, you or the article may not have solved my problem directly, but through this conversation; it stimulated my thinking to find the root of the problem from a different
    pathway.
Cheers and Happy Holidays and I hope I don't have to bother the forum again anytime soon -- if you know what I mean, jellybean... And sorry APPLE for my first impressions -- I brag on you guys to my boss all the time, making him wish he'd switch to MAC instead. My motto still lives, "ONCE YOU GO MAC; YOU NEVER GO BACK!"

  • Update to 10.6.3 broke Quicktime Pro 7.6.6

After the update Quicktime Pro crashes as fast as it opens, do not understand, help? It does the same on my older iMac and newer Mac Pro. Used the Combo updater, fixed all permissions after the update. My Quicktime pro came with the Final Cut Suite.

Thanks, I tried your suggestion and it still crashes. (you did mean user preferences? because that's the only ones I could find to trash.) There does seem to be a lot more files in preferences. I am at a loss still as to what is causing this. Installed 10.6.3 on 2 macs and both have the same problem, I find it hard to believe I'm the only one with this problem, but I guess that's the way it goes. I used the combo updater.
I use Soundtrack Pro version 1.1 almost everyday, this will make it almost useless. Anyway, thanks for trying Carolyn.

    Welcome to Discussions, Matt (msollars)
For any iSight problems, first try restarting the Mac. If the problems persist, try all relevant suggestions from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
After carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, if your built-in iSight still does not work with one or two apps regardless of which user account you use to test them, resetting the preferences for the app(s) giving trouble may resolve your issue.
Preference files end in ".plist" and are located in your ~User/Library/Preferences/ folder. Preferences for Apple apps (including iChat and Photo Booth) start with "com.apple...."
Quit the app and throw away the related .plist file. When you next launch the app, it will create a new file that reset its preferences to default values.
As examples, if iChat and Photo Booth problems continue in every tested user account after the troubleshooting suggested above, the preference files you will delete are these:
      com.apple.iChat.plist
      com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist
If you have problems with different apps and need help finding their associated .plist files, post back the app name and version number. We will give more specific responses based on your details.

You're probably already doing this but be sure that the Flash original files are the same image size and run at the same frame rate as the video that you want to edit into. When you export from Flash as Quicktime use the Apple none compression option. This will give you the best possible file to work with. If you don't see the none compression option you can follow this set of instructions: missing "none" compression in Quicktime 7.6.6 p... | Apple Support Communities

  • Importing Quicktime .move file into iMovieHD

I have been successfully pulling the files off a DVD using DVDxDV, and using that to export to Quicktime in .mov NTSC format. Then I can import into iMovie HD. It's been fine, but I have one file now that will not import. When i try to import it, it gives me an error message and says there isn't enough disk space to import it. But I was able to import other files, same size, and the window at the bottom of iMovie says there is more than 20 GB available. I thought maybe there was something wrong with that one file, so I went through the extraction process again, but that one file will still not import, even if I start a new empty project. The file is 1.4 GB, but the project has only about 25 minutes of video and this new file is about another 8 minutes.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have a 1GHZ Power PC G4, with 768 meg ram.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Pat

if it is already in DV format you really do not have to import it
There is a difference in .dv stream and a DV-encoded .mov:
You can just put a plain .dv stream in the Media folder and iMovie will digest it OK (if it is the same PAL/NTSC and 4:3/16:9 spec as the receiving project).
But this doesn't work with DV-encoded .mov files which the OP may have. iMovie HD will sort of imports it, but if you add a title, it will have bad artifacts.
I prefer to use MPEG Streamclip which, unlike some of its rivals, allows to convert DVD/VOB/MPEG to .dv stream which is iMovie's native format. For some strange reason other apps can convert to only .mov.
My only gripes with MPEG Streamclip are that the current version can't set the 4:3 or 16:9 flag to the exported .dv file (BTW, iMovie HD can't either!) and that it doesn't recognize QuickTime 7-style AIF format. The next version might fix these.

  • Safari (or quicktime) broke Labview!!!!!

I have a dell workstation running XP w/ SP2, and yesterday I installed the updates to Safari, Quicktime and iTunes - and now Labiew 8.0 hangs on startup - and I'm in the middle of a development project.
I've uninstalled all three Apple components.
    I've uninstalled and reinstalled Labview
I've installed service updates to Labview
    Nothing. Same issue.
Does anyone know which common DLL's were tweaked by these Apple updates? I need to get this machine back on-line, and doing a nuke/pave really isn't an appealing option.
Thankfully, my Macbook Pro is still running boot camp, or this would have been a VERY expensive problem already.
    Thanks,
    Alan

I used a system recovery point and resolved the problem. Still not happy about the situation though.

  • Leopard broke my Quicktime!!

After installing Leopard my Quicktime (and my Final Cut) refuses to play HDV files. In Quicktime I get a white screen. I have tried removing and reinstalling Final Cut and Quicktime, including removing receipts, repairing permissions, and making sure that I have all recent updates. I DO have a Quicktime HDV codec in my Quicktime File (in LIbrary). I have not had any of these problems on my other computer (a MacBook Pro). The computer with the problems is a DP G5.
Is this a problem with PPC macs or the PPC HDV codec???
    Any help/insights would be appreciated!!
    --Robert

If only it were that simple!! FCP is installed on the G5, and I even see the HDV codec sitting happily in the Quicktime folder in the Library.
There is something subtle going on that is causing a problem for some of us, under Leopard, with Quicktime (and hence FCP) not recognizing that an HDV codec is installed. There are enough other postings on the discussion boards like mine to let me know that I am not the only one with this problem.
Hopefully the next OS/ Quicktime/ ProApps update will fix this.
