Quicktime 7.2 doesn't play files with audio

I just upgraded quicktime to 7.2 and I can not open files that have audio. Mov files that video only open just fine.
When I updated quicktime, the installation was "successful". The web test on the apple site says quicktime is installed correctly and displays streams correctly.
itunes won't boot up
Final Cut gets stuck booting at the "audio filters" extension
Safari displays quicktimes video and audio just fine. Apple movie trailers look and sound great.
I have installed the ilife conflict fix update.
I am running a G5 with 10.3.9 OSX.

To Apple Discussions!
Did you run fsck/repair permissions after the installation? If so, then check out the following:
KB article - No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it (maybe open a GarageBand document) and then quit out of the application.

  • Can CDHtmlDialog play swf file with audio component?

    Hello, I'm using CDHtmlDialog in our application to play swf that shows user how to do a workflow. It works fine if swf does NOT have audio; if the swf has audio component, then it does not play.
    Can CDHtmlDialog play swf with audio?
    If not, any suggestion on how to implement playing swf file with audio?
    Many thanks in davance.

    Hi PingHu,
    How do you play the swf file in a html. I tried play a swf file with audio in my CDHtmlDialog class. I just use this:
    Html code Play the SWF file.
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html>
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
    <body>
    <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="200" height="100">
    <param name="movie" value="filename.swf">
    <param name="wmode" value="transparent">
    <embed src="D:\html directory\swf filename.swf" width="400" height="500" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" />
    </object>
    </body>
    </html>
    Then my sample is able to play a SWF file with audio. Hope this helps some.
    Best regards,
    Shu Hu

  • Firefox doesn't play video and audio, cann't download anything!

    A very strange problem occurred a few days ago. I didn't pay attention on it at first ( I thought it was caused by my provider) but now I found that it's a real problem. Firefox doesn't play video or audio. For instance, it starts loading and that's all. The same is with playing music. In addition, I can't download any files and view a big image as quick as early.
    What is more interesting sometimes Firefox just begins to work in ordinary way.

    There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
    If you want to try "hit and miss", you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might also work.
    If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

    Hello Fellow iBook Authors!
    Today I received the same error that you all have been discussing.  I tried selecting the DRM
    and this did not work for me, though I'm glad it did for some.  Here's what I did as a work-around. . .
    Since iBooks Author did not have a problem with Videos, I simply used one of my video programs, ScreenFlow to turn the audio into a video file m4v.  I added an image and extended the length or timing of the image to span the length of the audio file.  Then exported as an .mov.  I then opened QuickTime and opened the file and exported the file to iTunes.
    You can use iMovie, Camtasia or any other progam that will allow you to export the audio as a movie file.  Does this make sense?  I hope this helps, at least in the short-term.

    Experimental advice (in this particular context) coming up.
    Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going "Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences" in the Quicktime Player). In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:
    ... and click OK. Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.

    Flash files with audio sound garbled or high pitched
    Question
    Flash files played in the the newest version of the Flash
    Player sound garbled or have a high-pitched "chipmunk" sound to
    them.
    Answer
    The latest release of the Flash Player (v9.0.115.0 released
    on 12/03/07)) causes audio to sound garbled and/or high pitched
    like a chipmunk. Our development team is looking into this issue
    and working to find a fix.
    To avoid this problem, you can roll back your Flash Player to
    a previous release. If you have problems installing an older
    release of the Flash Player please review this article and contact
    Adobe for further support.
    At this time, the problem is limited only to SWF files
    produced with the MP3 audio codec. As a workaround, you can produce
    your SWF files with the PCM audio codec or use the FLV format
    instead of SWF.

    Safe versions security restrictions when installing Flash
    Player
    Issue
    If you previously installed a later version of Flash Player
    for Internet Explorer, you may be prevented from installing an
    earlier version. For example, if you installed Flash Player
    9.0.47.0 and attempted to install version 9.0.45.0 the installation
    would fail.
    Reason
    This issue is due to registry key settings applied by the
    Flash Player security model. The restriction is to prevent users
    from downgrading Flash Player minor versions. The minor version of
    Flash Player is the third set of numbers in the version name. For
    example, the minor version for Flash Player 9.0.47.0 would be 47.
    If Flash Player 9.0.47.0 was installed and you attempted to install
    9.0.45.0 (minor version 45), the installation would fail.
    Solution
    To resolve this, download the uninstaller for Flash Player
    from "How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX
    control" (TechNote tn_14157).
    Select Start.
    Select Run.
    Type cmd
    In the command window, type the following:
    uninstall_flash_player.exe /clean
    This will remove all entries in the system registry and
    resolve this issue.
    Note: The uninstall_flash_player.exe file must be saved to
    the same directory that the command window is in, for example C:\.

    Hi,
    I doubt it's Safari that's changing the settings:
    Why does this happen?
    Some third-party audio applications may change your computer's audio output setting. In fact, if you use the third-party application again after applying the above solution, the issue might occur again.

    To clarify Media Browser suggestion - very important that you copy ALL content from SD card to hard drive before importing using Media Browser. If you only have the .mts files alone, there is stuff missing that is needed for Premiere to properly interpret the video/audio.

  • Most of the .mov and .AVI files doesn't play anymore with QT 7 or 10

    I'm running OS 10.7.5 and most of the .mov files that were generated with Quicktime 7 doesn't play anymore, except in VLC.
    I used QT7 because it can still crop and edit videos, instead of QT 10 that came with the system.
    QT7 has a also a very nice feature that allow to reset the image ratio, which is sometime very usefull.
    I shall say that videos came from a digital recorder I used to tape the TV and those files came as .AVI
    Anyway, overnight (probably after an update of iTunes or any part of the system) QT 7 nor 10 can play those files anymore !
    Each time I try to open a file with QT it says I need a codec, and leads to the DIVX download page, but installing this codec doesn't solve my problem.
    QT7 was a very fine software and worked until now.
    Why an update makes my system go backward ??!?
    I'm a huge fan of Apple, but that is not acceptable !!!
    It just makes me want to purchase on older mac and go back to 10.6 !!!
    Shame on you Apple !

    Indeed, a further search on the side lead me to this page :
    http://perian.org/
    and now it works again !
    I still don't get how an update could change the system like this.
    Anyway, thanks for the reply

  • Encode DV to H.264 for iPod with Quicktime Pro - iPod won't play file

    Hello,
    I have been trying to encode Microsoft DV or Pinnacle DV AVIs into MPEG4 (H.264) for iPod, BUT the resulting files do NOT play in an iPod!?
    I use Quicktime Pro for Windows (v7.1) and use the Apple recommended settings, here are the exact settings I have tried and failed in an iPod;
    VIDEO: H.264 at 200kbps, Baseline Profile, 25fps, Auto Key Frames, 320x240 or 640x480, Multipass Best quality encoding.
    AUDIO: AAC Audio at 96kbps, 24kHz sampling freq, Stereo.
    I'm actually doing it for a client and they cannot play the file, they apparently have to 'convert' my file in their MAC based iTunes for it to work.
    Anyhow can anyone please give me an idea if I am doing something wrong?

    In that one there were two errors: needed a higher version of Flash installed and the codec issue. As you mentioned this had been narrowed down to the codec of the mp4 file. • Quicktime X Player doesn't play wmv files correctly!

    I have a brand spanking new MacBook Pro 13" with Snow Leopard installed. When I play WMV files with Flip4Mac installed, I'm unable to use the scrubber to move to different parts of the movie being played. I have to wait for it to cache (basically play back) before I can skip around in the movie.
    Funny thing is that my previous machine was a Macbook v. 1.1 and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard from Leopard with WMC. QT Player worked with WMV files just fine. What gives?

    RE: +I found a solution that works from the Flip4Mac boards.+
    +Go to System Preferences, select Flip4Mac then player, then advanced.+
    +Then select QT Player 10 and all works fine.+
    *For those of us w/ a different version of QT you won't need to specifically select QT 10, just hit the "plus" then browse to your applications folder and select whichever version of QT you have and this fix works. You don't need to have QT 10. (For those of us not blessed to be in Leopard yet.) I have QT 7.6.4 Pro and it works fine. Brings back the quick little "import" bar we love so much when opening WMV files. Turns out there was a purpose for it after all! Unless QT is told to import all media prior to opening the file, it imports as it plays causing the afore mentioned issue.

  • QuickTime VR Panorama doesn't play correctly from a webpage

    http://www.nps.gov/features/glac/gallery/082105b.htm is supposed to play a QuickTime VR Panorama (082105suelake.mov).  It contains the following <embed> tags:
    <embed src="../video/panoramas/082105suelake.mov" width="600" height="465" autoplay="true" controller="true"></embed>
    To play it, all you do is drag your clicked mouse across the image and it's supposed to play as long as your mouse is clicked.
    That worked through Snow Leopard (Safari 5.1.10, etc.).
    But with Lion and Mountain Lion (Safari 6.1.1, Firefox 27.0, and Google Chrome 32.0.1700.107, and earlier verisions), instead of moving with the clicked mouse, it would jump to what should have been its final position when the mouse was released.
    Safari 7.0.1 correctly plays it (one of the reasons I upgraded from Lion to Mavericks), but sadly, Firefox 27.0 and
    Google Chrome 32.0.1700.107 both behave on Mavericks as they did on Lion.
    All three use QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3 to play it; so, I figure Safari 7.0.1 must be providing some <embed> parameter values that Firefox and Chrome don't know about.
    The standalone QuickTime Player 7  plays the panorama fine.  It shows the following Properties:
    everything else is either blank or the default values.  The Inspector display shows
    with the Video Track unchecked, and
    with it checked.  I can only imagine what happens on Windows (Internet Explorer, etc).
    If you install the DivX Web Player (divx.com), DivX Web Player version 3.1.0.13 — from file “DivX Web Player.plugin” takes precedence over QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3, when playing .mov files in Safari (doesn't get installed by default in Firefox or Chrome).
    To get around that, I added type="video/quicktime" to the <embed> parameters, in http://home.comcast.net/~mybrandt/082105b.htm, hoping it would fix the problem Firefox and Chrome were having.  A similar fix made Safari choose QuickTime over DivX, when playing a QuickTime movie.
    But instead of playing it, like it did without DivX installed, with type="video/quicktime" added, Safari 7.0.1 now shows
    where the panorama image should be.  And, adding to my frustration, the extra parameter had no effect on Firefox or Chrome.
    All are using QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3, but don't behave the same — making this problem beyond my level of comprehension.
    So, what are the necessary <embed>, or <object>, or QT_WriteOBJECT_HTML, or QT_WriteOBJECT_XHTML parameters for a QuickTime VR Panorama?
    I can find all sorts of documents about QuickTime movies, but not that.  Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong spot.  But I've sort of run out of time.  If someone could provide a template to use, it would be most appreciated.

    I have to correct something.  With type="video/quicktime", Safari 7.0.1 does play the QuickTime VR Panorama, so it's effective for both QuickTime videos and panoramas.  But, what I wrote about Firefox and Chrome hasn't changed.
    I did get the QuickTIme with a "?" symbol when I tried to play it with Safari 7.0.1, before submitting the question; but maybe that was a side effect of an earlier attempt.

  • QuickTime Problem. Doesn't play video.avi.

    I have updated the system up to the latest - Maverick. After that QuickTime Player doesn't play video.avi. I have tried restarting the app - worthless. Yet, it has been showing 'Converting' for 30 mins. Please, help!

    Hello, thank you for your reply. I have several more questions if you don't mind.
    1. Does it always take that long to convert a file (more than 30 mins)? It seems that it doesn't work. It stops at the beginning and than nothing changes.
    2. Since when QuickTime needs convertation for avi? I thought this is a standart format.
    3. How can I use QuickTime 7?
    Here is what I see during 30 mins.
    Thank you beforehand!

  • DVD  player doesn't play movies with .avi extension

    My friend recently gave me dvds that had movies burnt off the net. They're all files with .avi extensions. When i tried to open the file, it said i needed a higher version of quick time player, which i downloaded off the apple site.
    After all this, i still can't play my dvd. What's happening here? The drive also makes these weird noises, like there's something seriously going wrong with the dvd. I tried playing it through dvd player on my mac book pro, but i couldn't open any file on it. It keeps sayin " NOT PERMITTED" . Funny part is, my friend could easily watch all these movies on his windows xp computer...
    Please helppp !!!

    I think it is unforgivable a DVD player won't play DVD's that are not actually DVD's at all but data disks. I am still mad my DVD player will not paint my house.
    Windows uses the one size fits all WM Player and it plays DVD and data disks or files etc.
    Use Quicktime and Perian (free) to play those pesky files either from the DVD or from a drag and drop to the desktop first.

  • Mplayer can't play files with spaces in their name

    After scratching my head and reinstalling codecs several times without luck, and old memory resurfaced of this occuring before and I managed to solve the problem.
    The thing is that if you doubleclick a file in Nautilus, and said files has spaces in its name, mplayer won't be able to play it, and gives a very cryptic error message, ie "cannot play file a%20b.avi" if the name of the file is "a b.avi".
    The trick is mentioned in this thread -- you edit /usr/share/applications/mplayer.desktop and change 'Exec=gmplayer %U' to 'Exec=gmplayer %F'.
    The bug has been around forever, and hasn't been fixed yet. Perhaps the mplayer devs don't want to fix it. In any case, I would propose that either we fix this in the mplayer Arch package, or that someone more knowledgeable than I get in touch with the devs about it.
    Just a suggestion, but I think it's kind of important. It's really confusing to new users.

    In my opinion, it it's not arch's job to fix bugs from upstream, no matter if it's mplayer or gnome's fault. Of course there are exceptions, eg if a bug in a critical package hardlocks the whole system, or adds a huge security risk.
    I would like to belive that the general arch user is smart enough to find one of the 30 threads about this bug (or the entry on the bugtracker) and fix it themselves. Personaly I would put this in the same category as packages that don't have a .desktop file at all from upstream.
