Quicktime 7.4 blues!! FCE won't open...

I'm having the same problem as many others are expressing with the new Quicktime 7.4 messing up my Final Cut Express. I can't open it (FCE) since I have updated my Quicktime. I read the article about using Pacifist, but I am confused about how to do an archive and Install on the Quicktime 7.4. Can someone explain this to me in the, "Archive and Install for Dummies" form? I NEED to get into my FCE soon!
Thanks very much...

Ok, I found the receipts but the only QT in there is the 7.3. When I try to click on that to install it says I can't do it because a newer version is already on my HD. I have put the 7.4 in the trash but didn't empty it yet, can this be causing this to read that it is still there? I also did a computer search for 7.4 and found Quicktime 740 listed but, it won't allow me to trash that, right above it is Quicktime 730 listed. They are both listed under 'other' in this place I found them. Does any of this make sense to anyone?
thank you...

  • Our imovies were accidentally saved as QuickTime movies. Now, they won't open. Neither program is recognizing the format. Ay suggestions?Ay suggestions?

Our imovies were stored in an external drive.  The files were moved to drop box.  We moved them back over to the external drive.  Now, they won't open and look like quick time movies when you look at the file names.  Neither quick time nor imovies can open the files, though. Any suggestions?

Just an update... A rep contacted me and we did a screen share. They were convinced that I wasn't full of <insert proper word here>. They promised to get back to me in a few days, and now? A few months later? Nothing.
Still no files. Still no correction... Still no nothing from Adobe.
The person I spoke to was kind, saying he'd make sure I got CC for free for a while...
    Still though, no follow up.
Adobe, are you going to correct this or just let your customer suffer at your mistakes?

  • FCE Won't open - crashes everytime

I am having a dilemma with FCE and FCP. I was having issues with Quicktime 7.4.1 so I used Pacifist to overide it with quicktime 7.2. After I did that, I was unable to open FCE or FCP they crash before they open. I went back in and re-loaded Quicktime 7.4 using Pacifist. FCP and FCE still will not open - crash before they open.
I am about at my wits end and out of ideas to get back up and running. I never had any problems until I started downloading "updates" and "upgrades" now I have constant problems. I just need to get FCP and FCE to open so I can work on my projects.
Can anyone help? Here is my info:
    Mac G5 Power PC 10.4.11
    FCE 3.0
    FCP 4.5
    Quicktime 7.4.1
I will forward the error message if needed.
    Thanks!

Yes -that is what I ended up doing. Although, I did choose the option of archiving and creating a back up file - not erasing system completely. When I re-booted, it asked for my password (the system password) which I entered and it wouldn't take. So I had to call Apple Support and sweet talk them into helping figure out how to change my password. Once that was achieved, I was able to get in - checked all my programs and files, and everything worked fine. i could get into FCE and FCP with no problem.
It didn't take as long as I had imagined either. Just make sure to back up your important stuff jsut in case.
    Hope this helps.

  • FCE won't open

My Final Cut Express (and the Quicktime next to it) will not open. They are just sitting on my dock at bottom on screen. When I click on it nothing happens. Per the "Finder" the program has been installed at 239.4 MB. Opened right after I installed it (3 days ago), but now nothing.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Alias or shortcut in the Dock can get corrupted, drag it out and it blows up in a puff of smoke.
Now go to Macintosh HD>Applications>Final Cut Express and drag the icon into the Dock.
Double clicking the FCE icon in the Applications folder will also open FCE.
    Try again.

If it doesn't open from the applications window, then take a look at your console log and see if an error is recorded there. I had a failure to launch which was in only one account but did list the error that prevented launch. Cleaned out all the FCE stuff and reinstalled and everything was happy.

  • FCE won't open on my new MacBook Pro - says I need a Quartz Extreme Card

I just bought a new MacBook Pro Laptop, and since I was having lots of hardware and software related problems with my old one, I clean installed everything rather than transferring things through archive.
Anyhow, I was initially able to register and install FCE from the original disk and then downloaded and installed all available upgrades. I opened it up, tried "Log and Transfer" to upload some video I'd shot on my Canon Vixia HFS10, and it worked fine. I saved and closed, but now, next morning when I tried to open FCE to edit my video it wouldn't open. A "Minimum System Check" came up that said "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: Final Cut Express requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme Capable Video Card." I'm pretty sure that my NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT cards meet the requirements and that Final Cut Express just doesn't recognize that they are much better than the minimum requirements it is programmed to look for. How can I fix this? I saw another thread on a similar topic suggesting that someone delete their FCE, and then perform a clean install, but that's effectively what I've just gone through, and I'm not in the mood to spend a couple of hours seeing if the same thing I just did fixes the problem I have now. This seems like something that would be an easy programming fix, probably a simple modification to a preferences file, but I wonder if anyone out there has the solution?

No, I have FCE 4 - should have said that - and it worked on my older Intel based MacBook Pro.
As it turns out, though, I think I've solved the problem, adapting a solution to a related problem I found on MacRumors.com. Don't know why this is necessary, but here's the solution I tried:
    1. right click on the FCE application icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    2. open the "Contents" folder and then open the "info.plist" folder in Text Edit
    3. find the line that says: "<key>AELMinimumQuartzExtremeCapable</key>," and replace it with "<key>AELMinimumGeForceCapable</key>", and then make sure that the next line says "<string></string>" without any number specified. Or, if you have some other kind of graphics card that you know is compatible, you could say what that is instead of GeForce. I found it doesn't work just to delete this line completely.
Again, I don't know why Apple didn't build in this flexibility when they updated their standard Graphics cards, but in any case this solution seems to work.

  • Updated Quicktime...now Mail won't open

I updated quicktime yesterday and immedately afterwards Mail would not open anymore. It just bounces (usually just once) and then nothing. Anyone know how to fix this or how to revert to the previous version of quicktime?

Actually, I have it on very good authority (Apple
person) that you can install the combo 10.4.6 update
and it will not step on SecUpd 2006-003 components
I cannot believe this. The Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update would certainly overwrite files installed by the Security Update 2006-003 (e.g. Safari). Could this be a misunderstanding? The Security Update 2006-003 does not touch anything in the Mail.app bundle, could this be what that person really meant? I'm pretty sure reinstalling the Security Update 2006-003 is necessary if the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update is reinstalled on a system where the Security Update 2006-003 had already been installed.
Also, I don't think that the Combo will alter the QT status.
EDITED: I agree with you on this, but I'm not sure, so I thought it would be appropriate to be on the safe side and take that possibility into consideration.
I suspect it is the Mail program that got damaged
I don't think so. According to the Console error messages, Mail crashes right upon start up because there is something amiss in /System/Library/Frameworks/.
Not sure QT re-install is needed.
It could very well be that properly reinstalling the QuickTime update fixes whatever went awry in /System/Library/Frameworks/ during the first attempt. If not, then reinstalling the Combo Update will be necessary, indeed.
I'll try installing the QuickTime update myself tomorrow (today here :-)) to see what happens.
    Regards.

  • FCE won't open older files

So I recently had to have my macbook repaired at the apple store, but it was only a software issue, so all of my files were still intact. So I go to open a project that I had been working on before the repair in FCE 4, and it says, "this project is unreadable, or may be too new for this version of Final Cut Express." The files were written with that same copy. Is it really that they are unreadable?

  • FCE Won't Open - just installed

I work with a school that is trying to install FCE 4. It seems to install just fine, and when they open it, it starts to load, but then suddenly disappears and nothing opens. They made sure the computer (iBook) met the necessary specs, and other schools I work with have installed it successfully on similar iBooks. We have tried opening it directly from the applications folder instead of the dock to no avail.
After reading some of the other posts, I will suggest to them trashing the preferences, however since they just installed the software and have not used it yet, it doesn't seem to me that restoring the application to it's default settings will change anything, so I'm not optimistic this will help.
Any other thoughts on what could be causing this?
    Thanks!

I had a problem that sounds very similar to this. I had to uninstall EVERYTHING (lot's of stuff that you don't know is there), then reinstall. It worked perfectly. Check this out and you'll see a link for how to do it:

  • File won't open in QT version 7.6.3 or Quicktime X but will open in 7.6.4

    Hello!
I have a Quicktime file that plays on a computer that runs Quicktime 7.6.4. When I try to play it on my computer, which has both Quicktime X and Quicktime 7.6.3, it won't open.
QT 7.6.3 opens the file but there's no video, just audio.
QT X says it's not a compatible format.
I tried downloading 7.6.4 from the Apple website but it says it can't install it on a computer that already has QT X. Any ideas?

Try using MPEG Streamclip to open it and/or installing Perian on the computer. No downloadable version of QuickTime will install on Mac OS X 10.6.

  • ITunes & Quicktime won't open

After installing iTunes and Quicktime to my computer, it won't open. Everytime i try to open it up it says
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"
I tried uninstalling both iTunes and Quicktime. Now a second problem arises. I've managed to uninstall quicktime, but can't seem to do the same for iTunes.
    Someone please help?

I go to start --> control panel--> add or remove programs
After I try looking for iTunes but I can't find it on the list at all. I also tried installing the program "Windows Install Clean Up", but I can't find the program name on the list either.
I went to start->all programs and iTunes doesn't seem to be on the list.
Okay. I think you have managed to mostly uninstall iTunes. what's left over are some program files/folders and two of the background processes installed with iTunes (iPodService.exe and iTunesHelper):
Background processes installed with iTunes for Windows
Those two processes are still running, which is why you can't delete those two folders/files.
So let's try shutting them down.
Right-click your Task Bar and select "Task Manager". Click on the "Processes" tab in Task Manager. Click "Image name" to sort the processes alphabetically, and find iTunesHelper.exe and iPodservice.exe. Select each of the two processes and click "end process the process and click the "End Process" button to shut them down.
Can you delet those two files/folders now?

  • Final Cut Express Won't Open

My computer won't open Final Cut Express. I can click on it, and go through the beginning of the program opening, and then without an error message, the program just closes.
    Any ideas?

Same exact thing with me today on a Dual G5. FCE won't open. Stops after five seconds. No messages.
I believe it has to do with setting scratch disks and resulting incomplete pathways to scratch disks. But I don't know how to fix it. When I removed a designated scratch disc, FCE opened. But when I reset a scratch disk, a box opened asking to verify a pathway, but the box had nothing in it. I clicked on "continue" and FCE simply closed again.
