QuickTime 7.4 has a major problem

I recently installed the recommended updates to iTunes & QuickTime player. This meant I installed QuickTime 7.4 but the only thing did was remove the sound from my videos, whether they were already downloaded or if they were just the previews in iTunes Store. The visual was fine but there was no longer any sound. As an added puzzle my music played fine.
Someone at apple suggested uninstalling QuickTime 7.4 & then re-installing it, which I did but nothing changed, still no sound on my videos.
I have scoured this site for advice but only found other people with problems which were similar but not identical to my own & all relating to QuickTime 7.4
So, I decided to uninstall 7.4 & re-install an older version, I chose 7.3.1 & guess what? It worked! I now have sound on my videos again.
Having said all that....someone at Apple needs to investigate this & find out why QuickTime 7.4 is causing so many problems, then fix it so that it doesn't!
Come on Apple, Steve Jobs didn't get where he is today with poor quality products!

I think there are MANY of us who experienced that same issue...I have found several threads pertaining to this issue. I too had to uninstall the new version of quick time and reinstall 7.3.1
Like you, that solved the issue, however, I think I read that movie rentals won't work on 7.3.1 (I don't rent on itunes anyways)
I hope Apple fixes the issue with 7.4 soon

iMessage notifications in iOS8 has 2 major problems.
1-you cannot open messages from the notification anymore. You have to close the notification and open messages separately. Completely defeats the purpose of the notification.
2-if you are replying to a message through the notification (awesome idea btw) and you receive another message, what you typed disappears. It's not saved in messages and you have to close - open messages and start all over again.
Anyone else experiencing these problems? Am I doing something wrong?

Regarding (1) - no you don't.  You just slide to open as before.

The "#xml=" parameter to pass a Highlight File Format URL has indeed been removed from Acrobat X, and multi-phrase highlighting cannot be re-activated by the user. The process required a complex arrangement of plugins to communicate - the highlight, EWH and browser classes - and there are sound engineering reasons for the decision to depreciate and remove the feature - not least because it is increasingly difficult to get it to work in modern browsers.
HFF in in the form used by dtSearch was introduced in Acrobat 3, and documented up to Acrobat 6. It is disabled by default in Acrobat and Reader 9, and was omitted from the PDF Open Parameters specification for Acrobat 9, indicating to developers that it was depreciated:
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/PDFOpenParameters.pdf
Remaining on Adobe Reader 9 is not a suggested "solution", and of course now that Reader X is available, Reader 9 will be gradually removed from the distribution channels. It is currently available via the "all versions" download page along with Reader X, at
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/
The Protected Mode in Adobe Reader X is a vital layer of protection for users opening PDF files from remote sources, and several features of Acrobat X (encryption, portfolios, etc.) are unsupported by Reader 9 or earlier.
The "#search=" parameter, to run a search and highlight the first instance of a single word or list of single words, remains in place and remains documented.

  • HELP! My iPod has some major problems and the warranty just ended!

My 20 GB iPod is about a year old since I got it for Christmas last year. I have never had any problems with it. Now about a week ago it went completely haywire.
It started when I went to play some songs. They would play for a few seconds and then it would freeze. It then got to the point where the songs would remain on 0 seconds, not playing. I tried doing the reset thing suggested on Support, but it just made things a whole lot worse.
Now, whenever the iPod turns on the Apple logo appears and then it goes straight to the folder with an exclaimation point. The hard drive also makes strange noises like it is booting up and then it makes strange clinking noises. Trying everything, I decided that I would hook it up to my pc and do a restore. Well, the Do Not Disconnect screen appeared on my iPod but nothing happened on my pc. It wouldn't recognize the iPod.
I was just wondering what could have possibly happened since it has worked fine for a year. The only things I could think are the new iPod update (11-17) that I decided to use about two or three weeks ago. Maybe the cold temperatures had something to do with it? Maybe I just need a new battery?
Should I take the iPod to my local Apple store? I don't know if it would be worth getting it repaired at a cost of over $250.
      Windows XP

Corey, I just had the exact thing happen to me today. I've spent hours toying with it by following all of the recommendations on the support site - no progress.
I didn't do the software update prior to the problem occurring, so I'll bet that has nothing to do with it.
Do you have any other ipods running off of the same PC? My wife recently installed her nano on this same PC.
It did dawn on me that the problem started on Jan 1, but it might just be coincidence - I'm like you - I'll take any clues.
I get one break, though. Mine was purchased 10 months ago.

  • "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." Quicktime problem!

I'm having a MaJoR problem with Quicktime and iTunes, but i think the main problem is Quicktime since iTunes runs off of it. I've never been able to install Quicktime, and i recently bought an iPod, and when i try to install Quicktime and iTunes the download goes great, but as soon as i try to open either one i get the error "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." i've tried about 7 or 8 times now, using the Apple help page too. Please let me know if u have any idea how to fix this.

Here's what worked for other users; perhaps it will work for you (I've never had this problem so I can't say for sure):
    1) Uninstall QuickTime from the Add/Remove Programs control panel. If you have difficulties, Microsoft's Installer Cleanup Utility, as you mention, may help.
    2) Clean up the Windows registry with http://www.ccleaner.com/ (freeware)
    3) Restart your system.
    4) Delete the QuickTime folder
    5) Reinstall QT ( you can get QT separately here.
    Good luck.

This problem is same as reported here and hasn't been solved:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1370493&tstart=1397
I have seen this problem appearing on Windows 2000, XP SP2 and XP SP3 with all QuickTime 7 versions (can't tell about iTunes since I don't use it), it didn't bother me because I have no use for QT/MOV myself.
    but.
I have just installed your latest QT Player 7.60.92 and it craps out with the same error whenever I want to open .mov files.
And I have downloaded few trailers ranging from small resolution up to highest "HD" resolution from your own Apple website to make sure it is not some encoding compatibility issue.
I know it is a bug in QT Player itself, so don't tell me please that "my QT got fragmented" or such BS (like the replies suggested in the other thread) or ask about any QT alternative corrupting "official" QT Player since I have no such thing. I am trying to make it work on my mother's computer with freshly installed WinXP (prior updated up to latest patches), machine has standard 32bit intel single core CPU (2.8GHz, 2GB of RDRAM).
I am really sorry I bought her camera that take those stupid .mov QT videos.

Yes, same as in the other thread from year ago, the QT/.mov files play fine in the browsers (I have just check on IE7, Firefox, K-Meleon).
    Message was edited by: -888-

Look, I had it running _few times_ too until it crapped out and gives the error since (on my own other computers - which I don't care since I have no use for any QT/.mov myself, but I repeat from post 1: I need it working on my Mother's comp).
And talking about 'bad drivers' - yes, I know that the drivers are sometimes at fault and bad drivers can make entire windoze pc unstable or crash; but how can you suggest this as a cause in this case when I'm telling you that the same error appears on completely different machines? And wouldn't this error appear from begining, from very first use of QT Player if it were bad drivers? Sure it would if it was faulty driver, but since it didn't that's not the case obviously.
Another pointer that it is NOT drivers related problem is that all other audio-video programs work fine, without errors and problem-free on the same machines, including playback of some of the .mov files with Media Player Classic or VLC - while they crap out with QT Player. If it was any of the drivers for audio or video, directx acceleration, etc - the faulty driver(s) should and would affect other programs as well. Yet all of them work fine and as I said - some even play QT files too (the ones capable of).
    /edit:
Just to test it I "caved in" and I have installed entire iTunes 8.0 garbage (as suggested by foobula earlier) since I couldn't get just QTPlayer part of it to install separately, and what do you know:
LO & BEHOLD! same .mov files play fine with QT7, no errors, no problem! (I have opened/closed same .mov files many times).
Then I uninstalled iTunes and all of its junk,
removed any traces of it (because it left out - in a Microsft style - plenty of garbage in registry, user appdata folder etc),
    rebooted,
installed the "standalone" QT Player 7.60
and hello Apple my darling! - same error is back after just 2 playbacks of very same .mov files!
(I used Apple's own .mov trailers for testing just to make sure I have "right" quicktime files:
    http://movies.apple.com/movies/weinstein/inglouriousbasterds/inglouriousbasterds -tlr2_1080p.mov
    and
    http://movies.apple.com/movies/weinstein/inglouriousbasterds/inglouriousbasterds -tlr2_480p.mov
    - and I repeat: both played once each fine (haven't play till the end though, but I'm sure that doesn't matter since the problem appears from the start)
What better proof you need that the problem is only with QT Player in a "standalone edition" (or whatever Apple calls it) and not with any drivers etc?
As previously, both play fine when links opened in a browsers (so the QuickTime whatever-components responsible for audio and video rendering WORK FINE and its not any "bad drivers" problems, it is just QT Player application's problem)
Again: (I hate to repeat myself)
*I don't want any itunes or other junk,*
*I just want .mov files to open with quicktime player - no more or less.*

  • Quicktime player has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Hi, I'm having real problems running QT on my pc. I've tried several combinations eg- 7.02 with Itunes, 7.02 without itunes plus also the last 6.? version.
Each time, the programme is fine until it reboots. Then it is unable to open either programme- bringing up 'Quicktime player has encountered a problem and needs to close' screen.
I'm guessing its quite a common problem but I don't have enough time to trail through all the posts.
Please can someone offer me some advice, Its driving me crazy!
    Thanks

Can someone please help me with this??

  • Itunes and quicktime major problems...

I can't get itunes to work at all and now quicktime's stopped functioning! I get the usual "Sorry for the inconvenience but itunes has encounted a problem and needs to close" every time I try and start it. I've installed quicktime from the main apple download and it installs fine but won't actually work! I've tried uninstalling quicktime but I get the message ' fatal error during installation' and it quits the uninstall. I've uninstalled itunes and after reinstalling it get the same 'sorry for the inconvenience' message again. Need assistance from an itunes expert please. Thanks.

hmmmm. i'm better at the 6.0.x and 5.0.x versions of this. but let's try some things here.
the message that you're getting with the QT uninstall is a variation of the 1603 error message that folks used to get in the 6.0.x and 5.0.x days. so we'll atart working through some of the techniques that used to work with it on a QT uninstall/install in those days.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next, clear leftover QuickTime program files and folders from the PC.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
restart your PC, and try installing iTunes again.
does the install go through properly this time?

I want to reinstall CS4 as it has been doing some strange things regarding printing, etc. However, when I did this before, it created a major problem and I ended up buying a new computer because no one could figure out why it kept hanging up during the installation. Hours on the phone, no results. I'm scared to do it on this computer. Should I try? Not even the Adobe support could get it resolved. I believe it was somehow reading a product number that could not be deleted or something, and nothing worked.

    Hello, as an addition:
In your case I would download a really new trial version of your program(s) in question and change it/them into a "real" version later, BUT because you said, that you "re-installed" already, so it will become a little bit more complicated. It would be necessary that you have to use "Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool" as Keith wrote.
Here an advice for that (The order varies depending on your individual needs. Please read all my proposals first, so you can better choose the first step:)
    1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
    2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
    3. Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
    4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html and if "open" please use the chat, I for may part - as it seems unlike you - had the best experiences. I quote from Adobe's employee Preran: The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.

  • QuickTime Player has encountered a problem...

    Hello,
After speding a better part of the day to install iTune 6 and QT7, I am out of ideas.
Each time the "QuickTime Player has encountered a problem..." occurs. The specific problem is with "QuickTimeAudioSupport.qtx"
Here are the highlights (none worked, virus scan disabled)
    -installed iTunes wtih QT
    -installed stand-alone and the iTunes
-installed alternative QT, iTunes still did not work
-renamed QuickTimeAudioSupport.qtx, QT began to work but of course without sound
    -updated video driver
    -updated audio driver
    -numerous other variations
So, based on the reported error and the fact that QT does not work stand alone, I believe the first problem lies with QT. If there any way to correct this problem?
Thanks a million in advance for any help.

I'm afraid there's a serious problem with the Windows version of QT7 being released. A week ago, I convinced a friend coworker to download QT in a pair of brand new PCs running Windows XP, in order to view the skinned example in Apple's site.
It crashed both Internet Explorer and Mozilla, with no apparent reason.

    Hello,
I am getting this message and it is driving me bonkers!
"quick time Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".
Am running XP. Have uninstalled all Apple programs (QT, iTunes, update, bonjour, etc and in the order Apple recommends.) I re-installed QuickTime again.
    Same Problem.
Went to the control panel and launched the quicktime control panel.
QuickTime Preferences comes up. If i choose the "files type" tab this error comes up in a window:

An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl",QuickTime"
Clicking on this just closes the window.
Some one on another post mentioned something about another codex takinhg the place of an original. How do I find if this is causing it if only to shut down that avenue of conceren?
This has taken up SOOO much time I can't tell you and I can't use my iPhone or iTouch until I get it sorted.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Good work, craigeed. That's enough information (of precisely the right type) to suggest that you don't have a codec pack issue. If you had a codec pack problem, usually you'd get a rundll error if you just tried to open the control panel (and you're getting further in than that). Also, the rundll error for a codec pack problem would indicate that your QuickTime.cpl is lurking in the wrong place (down in the \system32\ directory). Your message is showing that your QuickTime.cpl is in precisely the correct location.
So we'd better start checking on some other possibilities.
The "QuickTime has encountered an error" message is pretty generic, but on at least some versions of QuickTime 7.x it has suggested malware problems. So we'd better try getting that off the table.
Download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and antispyware scans. If your security software providers offer them, try backing that up with an online virus scan. (That can sometimes pick up an infection even if the security software on the PC has been compromised.)
Do the scans show up any problems? If so, does fixing them help with the QuickTime error?
