Quicktime 7.5.5 update

I have been trying to update to Quicktime 7.5.5 but i keep getting this message:
The update "Quicktime" can't be saved.
You do not have appropriate access privileges.
The installer package has been moved to the trash.
To try again, open the package from the finder.
How do I open it in the finder?

It's not in my trash but is in my applications folder. i tried opening it from the app folder but still the same message.

Here is a solution to the Quicktime 7.1.5 Update conflicts - it works!

Any program that is having a problem since the Quicktime 7.1.5 Update should benefit from reverting back to QT version 7.1.3 . My TurboTax works again, because I downgraded to QT 7.1.3 .
You can't manually remove all of the files necessary to uninstall QT 7.1.5. Don't even try.
Don't uninstall and re-install your programs. It is a waste of time, and will not fix the problem.
You can choose to re-install the operating system, and it should work. It is not necessary, though, and is a hassle.
This is how you can easily downgrade QuickTime 7.1.5 to version 7.1.3:
1. Download Quicktime 7.1.3 installer:

2. Mount the installer package (Double click QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg so that it opens and shows the open box icon labeled QuickTime713.pkg). This is very important.
3. Download and install Pacifist from this location:

4. Open Pacifist (You can do so without going through the registration process. You can do that later if you decide to pay.)
5. Drag the QuickTime713.pkg icon to the Pacifist dialog box. When you release it, another window opens with a list of files. The top file is labeled "Contents of QuickTime713.pkg."
(Please note that if you mistakenly select the unmounted .dmg file into Pacifist instead of the .pkg, there will be an installation but without an effect. )
6. Click to highlight "Contents of QuickTime713.pkg."
7. Go to the "File" Menu in the Menu Bar and choose "Install Files to Default Locations" from the pulldown menu.
A dialog box will open asking if you want to install entire contents. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.
8. Be sure to check the box that says "Use Administrator Privileges" if it is not already checked.
9. Click "Install" and carefully read any further instructions as they pop up. You will respond with the equivalent of YES every time, even if asked to replace every file for QuickTime. Take your time, and don't assume that you know what the instructions say without reading them.
10. When the install process is finished, restart the computer. You are through with Pacifist, so don't open it again (unles you decide to Register and pay).
11. Once again, open QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click QuickTime713.pkg to do a normal installation one more time. After the install is done, restart your Mac one last time. That's it.
By the way - NEVER keep your tax return data file in the same folder as the TurboTax application. You might accidentally delete it when uninstalling TurboTax. Put it in a folder with your other tax prep documents.
It took me approximately one hour from the time I started downloading QT 7.1.3 and Pacifist until I was completely finished and using TurboTax again. I have a 400 Mz PowerPC Sawtooth G4, so your time may be better. Good luck!
Oh, and don't forget to pay for Pacifist. They deserve it!

All of sudden, I can't launch iTunes as I get a popup saying "iTunes requires Quicktime 7.5.5 or later". I only have 7.4 currently and the apple site doesn't show anywhere to download Quicktime upgrade. Software Update detects no reqd updates. Help pls??

I just downloaded a new version, again, due to upgrade to a larger HDD, and the new installer does have Apple name identified.
So try it again.

What version of Quicktime Player X is updated to if updating to 10.7.5?

Does anyone know what version of Quicktime Player X is updated to when you update the OS to 10.7.5? Currently, I am running Quicktime Player 10.1, but wasn't sure if it would stay at 10.1 or get updated to 10.2.
Also, has it been verified that Quicktime 10.2 will work on Lion?

Why two QuickTimes with Apple Software Update in Vista under Boot Camp?

Running Apple software update in BootCamped Vista, I see selection for 1) QuickTime, 2) Safari, 3) iTunes & QuickTime.
Items 1) and 3) are by default checked for download. Why would I want to download QuickTime twice??

Funny you should mention that! Same thing happened to me yesterday, I was downloading Boot camp 2.1 and there were the other three downloads you mentioned. I downloaded them anyway. I now have Safari 3.2.1 (etc.) on my Windows partition. Why did I do that ? To be frank I do not know!! Now you have all three on the Windows partition.

QuickTime 7.3.1 update not detected

QuickTime 7.3.1 has been out for a few days now, but it's not being detected by Apple Software Update, or the QuickTime control panel update feature. My QuickTime version still shows 7.3 (QuickTime Pro). Sounds like a bug in the update software... has anyone else noticed this?

Did Quicktime 7.5.5 update kill my iChat video client?

Yesterday I upgraded my Quicktime to the latest and greatest via Software Update.... and now the video portion of my iChat client appears to be broken. It was working great before the update, but now it will freeze video, audio might continue and then when I end the chat it will crash.
I read some posts on the site about setting the preferences to 500 bps for video in iChat and 1.5 Mbs on the Quicktime Streaming preferences. This worked initially, but now I'm back to crashing.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it?

I have tried the solution posted here, as well as one that I found in another board on this forum (Reinstalling Quicktime from the stand alone installer).
My situation: The video froze, the audio would work for 15 seconds or so afterwards, then ichat would hang and eventually have to be force killed.
I tried:
repairing permissions
reinstalling quicktime
getting the person I was ichatting with to update quicktime (this just caused it to crash on their end as well as my end)
The console output from the crash is:

Quicktime won't find updates after 7.2.1

I am just updated to Mac OS X 10.5.8 so that I could use itunes. But now I get a message that says that to upen the latest version of itunes (that I just downloaded), I need I need Quicktime 7.5.5 or later. I've tried "updating existing software" in the Quictime menu, but no updates are found. I've also been to the quicktime download page on apple.com and tried that, but no dice. Any ideas?

Bart, if you ysed Safai to download it, go the the Safari Menu>Windows>Downloads, when that opens Right click or Control+click on that QT you downloaded & choose Reveal in Finder.

My question is, do I have to purchase a new Quicktime Pro 7 key if I install the 7.04 update? It states that installation will disable QT 5 or 6 Pro functionality but does not specify what will happen if you already own QT Pro 7.
One other question off topic, when I launch QT lately to play a clip, the clip does not automatically play even though I have "automatically play movies when opened" check boxed in my QT preferences. Why might this be occuring? It was fine up until a few weeks ago.

Your QuickTime 7 Pro registration will continue to work until QT 8 is installed. Any updates don't remove a version 7 key. The warning is for older Pro users.
No answer to the "autoplay" problem. Maybe a corrupted .plist file.

General error in FCP re: rendering and export after Quicktime 7.5.5 update

My FCP 6.0.4 rendering and export to Compressor no longer works after an update to Quicktime 7.5.5.
Rendering fails after a few seconds "General Error!" pops up. Exporting to Compressor, after setting it compressing, Compressor after a few seconds fails. (audio is processed) My current work around is exporting a sequence using Quicktime conversion (time consuming) and then opening in Compressor.
I've done the usual, deleting prefs, new sequences and projects, even saving movs in different codecs.
(been using H.264)
My sequences are all custom sizes but tests using presets also fail.
Any ideas anyone?
And I was so happy the Quicktime upgrade could play sequence movs recorded months earlier that until now I couldn't play properly due to previous Quicktime upgrades!

Well basically since I'm using content already in the H.254 codec (eg: a trailer off the internet, or the downsizing of HD footage) i'm just exporting to a codec that didn't have to be rendered and gave quality results. I used motion jpeg B as an export codec because it was quick (although HD space hungry) with no drop in quality. The resulting exports could be imported into a custom sequence (720 x 405) as square pixel aspect ratio files. Overlapping the canvas with other windows (eg: viewer) meant I could play a clip (with dropped frames) but not have to render it. I selected the H.264 codec as the sequence codec because I've found other codecs introduce darkening or lightening or blurring or other undesirable artefacts when exported to Compressor. H.264 used in the sequence settings exported through Compressor would give resulting m2v's as sharp and contrast accurate as the source file.
That was until the recent 7.5.5 Quicktime update where attempts to do the same things I did before result in "General Error!" coming up after a few seconds of play or rendering.
Traditional DV codecs are "blurry" in my opinion, especially when coping with web content or conversion of HD downloads.
If you can suggest an editing codec that works best with FCP that is quick, doesn't introduce blurring or general degrading of the image I'd be happy to try it out. I typically downsize HD content from the web for DVD playback, so it's usually in a H.264 codec already. So i would need a codec for export from Quicktime that would work best with a codec in FCP. That doesn't alter picture quality when compressed to m2v in Compressor.

Quicktime doesn't recognise Update on G3

I have an old G3 iMac in which I have installed a 120Gb Hard drive. It has been running Tiger for a while but needed a reinstall for various reasons. All is now setup except iTunes and Quicktime. ITunes starts with the message asking me to upgrade quicktime to 7.3.1 or later and then closes. Quicktime asks me to upgrade to 7.0 or later. I have installed quicktime 7.6 then 7.5, removed and reinstalled but whenever I start these applications I get the same error message. If I check the version number of Quicktime under the applications folder, it is reported as the updated version 7.5 or 7.6 whichever is appropriate. There were no installation errors.
The only other factor is that as the iMac has no dvd drive, I had to use the macmini with the G3 in target disk mode.
Any ideas what is going on?

HUH? You have two different versions of QT installed?
You should either have one or the other. Otherwise, your computer will get confused as which one to use.
Did you install from Software Update or direct download from the QT website?
You did not mentioned that you repaired permissions & restarted your computer which should be done prior to & after installations (among other things).

ITunes & Quicktime stopped working after update

I have an iMac G3, running 10.3.9, and when I ran software update and got the newer quicktime and itunes, neither will work any longer.
When I click them in the dock, the icon just bounces once and that's it.
Any advice? I can't figure how to go back to an older version of quicktime-- is there an issue with the crt macs or with 10.3?

Have you run Repair Permissions?
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

Unable to update QuickTime, won't install update, can't uninstall - HELP!

Firefox (20.0.1) say need to update QuickTime. Properties show current version 7.6.4. Update button takes to download 7.7.3. It downloads ok, but will not install, says newer version already installed. Didn't find newer update than 7.7.3. Tried to uninstall QuickTime, says have more current version, need uninstall newer first. Tried Windows Vista help, looked through Community questions, still unable to find resolution. Supposed newer version not show in Programs, only updates can find are Windows. Not tech savvy enough to go further without guidance. If no fix available, suggestion for alternate program that does same job would be very welcome!

An update to QuickTime would not install on my PC; I kept getting a message that it "ecountered an error". I tried installing the update manually; I was told a newer version was already installed, and the installation could not be completed. QuickTime wouldn't even open; I got the same message about a newer version, so I tried running the uninstaller, both from the Start Menu shortcut and from within Control Panel - neither worked. The uninstaller told me it encountered an error & couldn't continue.
I ran the Microsoft Fix-It tool that Dianne 13 posted the link to, and it uninstalled QuickTime without any problem whatsoever, and the new version of QuickTime was able to then install.

Quicktime 7.1.6 update caused QT to override all Flash plugins in Safari

After updating Quicktime Pro 7.1.5 to 7.1.6 I have found Quicktime is now overriding all Flash plug-in content in Safari. I tried re-installing Flash, but it didn't work. All I get in any Flash plug-in site is a Quicktime logo with a question mark over it. I also tried re-updating Quicktime, but no luck.
The update was yesterday, and I haven't done any software changes lately. Prior Quicktime updates have not caused any problem.
This is the first time an automatic update has caused a problem.
Apple customer support wants $49.95 to solve this even though it is their update that caused the problem.
I haven't found any way to reset/edit Safari plug-ins
Any ideas on how to solve this?

I have the same issue on both my Intel and PPC macs - I have set quicktime to be the default for flash and that appears to have fixed some of the issues, however I still get the big "?" where my enhanced podcasts were?
Everything works fine in firefox though.
This is a great way to 'fix" a security flaw in quicktime/safri - by disabling its use.
