Quicktime 7.5 and iMovie 6

This should be up Quicktime Kirk`s street I hope since he has always been so helpful in the past.
I have just posted a problem on iMovie 6 which may belong here, namely the preview of all my imported clips(and added themes) to a new iMovie 6 1080i HD PAL(25)project are jerky.
Never experienced this problem before.
Having not commenced a movie project for a few months, the only relevant cause I can think of is the latest Quicktime update.
Is this likely to be the cause and is there a workaround other than reverting back to the previous version of Quicktime (which I am reluctant to do in case of security/other issues)?

After I read the post, I tested it on my Mac. I can safely say that I can import videos from HDC-SD9 using iMovie and Final Cut Pro now.
Update to QuickTime 7.5 and iMovie 7.1.2 to make this camera work with the Mac.

Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
Here are the details…
- Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
- OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
- I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
- Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
- Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
- Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
- Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
- Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
- I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Recently upgraded to Mavericks and iMovie '13, and suddenly I'm beach balling like mad?

I upgraded to Mavericks and iMovie '13 recently, and have been working on a video project in iMovie for the last few days. I hadn't been having any issues, but now I'm 'beach-balling' almost constantly, not just in iMovie, but everywhere. Opening a new app (iMovie/Chrome/Safari) will cause beachballs, and sometimes iMovie will fail to launch entirely, appearing as 'Not Responding' in Force Quit. Even using the Finder bar has caused beachballs. I've removed extraneous apps, cleared hard drive space, performed Disk Repair, and am not seeing much improvement. My EtreCheck output is as follows:

I have had no software issues with my MacBook prior to this (although I did have water damage that was repaired by Apple). If the problem is an issue with Mavericks/iMovie, I wouldn't be opposed to downgrading back to iMovie '11 or Mountain Lion if that's possible, as long as I can maintain my work on this project. I'm really looking for a 'quick and dirty' fix, as I'm already behind on this video project and need to finish as soon as possible. Thanks!

We are having old home movies put on DVD's. How do we import them to MacBook Pro using Snow Leopard and iMovie 8.0.6. Can watch the video, but can't get it to import.

We took 3 video cassette 8mm that were recorded in the early 90's to a place that burned the videos onto 3 DVDs. When inserted to our Mac, the DVD player comes on to play the DVD. Opened Quicktime, but can find no way to import. Went to File>Open File>Sony_DVD_Recorder_Volume. Clicked on Sony_DVD-Recorder_Volume and it shows a file named VIDEO_TS. Clicked on that and 6 files showed VIDEO_TS.BUP, VTS_01-0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS-01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB. Where is DVDxDV?

Alister, there's no problem with it on my Mac, nor none that I know of ... I think you must have an install specific issue.
Check your camera setting matches your currently chosen Easy Setup ... in fact, close the Log and Capture window, then go ahead and re-choose the appropriate Easy Setup for your camera and I/O hardware, then choose View menu > Refresh A/V Devices, and then reopen Log and Capture ...
... still no go? if not then post pack with complete details of your hardware and software, your camera, the recording format, any I/O equipment that is in the mix etc.

New problem with camera and imovie 08

i have two questions already posted about my camera not being found by imovie 08 except that it did it the first time and wouldn't any time after that.
well here's the new problem. as i'm sitting here trying to find some other post that could help me with my dilemna imovie opens and shows my impost screen but says "communication error". with my first joy and imovie working again came confusion about this error. the error makes it so i cannot import video because the next "error" that comes up says my camera is disconnected or off but even this is farther than i've gotten in weeks. i don't know what this error means and i still can't import video. anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.

I movies work with sound in quicktime but not in imovie hd!!!

I have clips that worked in imovie hd before but all of a sudden the sound will not work, but they will work in quicktime....any ideas?

Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Some clips - which started life not as DV camcorder clips, but might be .AVI, or somesuch, downloaded from the web, or shot as movies with a digital stills camera - may have audio in QuickTime but not in iMovie.
QuickTime understands and replays many different file formats (..see all the different file formats QuickTime Player can handle, in the right-hand column here..) ..some of which iMovie can't handle.
If your clips "..worked in imovie hd before but all of a sudden the sound will not work.." it might be because you'd had QuickTime open in the background, previously, or because you'd altered them in some way ..or maybe you 'Extracted' their audio, but don't have the check-boxes ticked for the audio tracks at the right-hand edge of the Timeline.
The most important question is: were these clips originally from a tape-based DV camcorder, or did you import them from something else, e.g; web, hard disc camcorder, DVD camcorder, .AVI or other iMovie-incompatible origins?

I have a DVD that iDVD and iMovie don't recognize

I have a DVD that iDVD and iMovie don't recognize. It was a VHS tape that I had turned into a DVD by an outfit called The Video Lab.
I have OS X 10.3.9, iDVD 5, iMovie HD
When I put this DVD into the superdrive it opens the DVD Player and will play on my Mac. It is apparently divided into 28 5 minute chapters or at least if I hit the skip icon it says Chapter 2, 5 minutes time showing.
Anyway the DVD has a folder labeled VIDEO_TS . Inside the folder are 8 files labeled:
VIDEO_TS.BUP, VTS010.BUP, VTS012.VOB, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS010.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB, VTS013.VOB, VTS011.VOB
Is there any way I can open this DVD in iDVD or iMovie so that I can use parts of it??

You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

Another possibility is to use DDxDV:

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

Optura 20 and iMovie 10.0.6---camera doesn't mount

My daughter recorded a video for her class and needs to edit it. I have used my Optura 20 and successfully transferred video to the iMac but not in the last few years.
Currently running Yosemite and iMovie 10.0.6 on a mid-2011 iMac.
When I plug the camera directly into the firewire port, iMovie does not see it. When I go to "system information" and look at the Firewire bus, I see the warning "Unable to list FireWire devices." When I remove the camera and plug in my firewire HD, it appears quite nicely in System information; when I plug the camera into the drive to "daisy-chain" the system info reverts to "unable to list" and the hard drive disappears from my desktop.
This is using the (only) Firewire cable I have for the camera, which is 9 pin to 3 pin.
I went to my ancient mac mini (running OS 10.4) but that ancient beast has only a 6 pin outlet on the back.
Before I run out and try to find a 6--->3 cable, does anyone have any insight? Does this camera never work on a modern mac with a modern OS? Is the problem I am having likely to also show up on the Ancient Mini? My fallback position is to go to a camera store and have the miniDV converted to a digital file (and I would like to do this the old-fashioned way if at all possible).

if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way

Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Serious quality loss with MTS files and iMovie '11

I have some issues with my brand new Panasonic HDC SD700 (a full HD camera)
I experience serious quality loss when I use iMovie to create a movie.
I did some tests, but still puzzled int this world of codecs and formats.
Maybe some of you can help.
I have made a short shot of 450 sec with highest mode (1080p 24fps)
It show is finder as a .MTS file size 99MB, I'm very happy with the quality when I play this with VLC.
iMovie turns this file into a .mov file with 635MB size, in Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM, Timecode. This quality is already poor compared to original MTS file.
No wonder that the output file (select 1080p H.264 codecs) results also in unacceptable quality.
I'm running latest imOvie version with all updates etc.
I have no idea were to look to solve this issue. It is quite annoying since I have invested in a top Cam recorder. Not sure is Final cut express will sure the issue either.....

Have you tried shooting at the PAL standard of 25fps? I checked the specs for your Panasonic but didn't see any mention of a 24fps mode, but most reviews seem to miss mentioning the shooting modes. If you did indeed shoot at 24fps, did you choose this frame rate when importing to iMovie '11?
I export as 1080p (same as original. My output is a bit blurry and colors are a bit pale.
Did you use the 1080p preset under Share to Media Browser, or Export using QuickTime? If the latter, be sure to select an appropriate data rate - if set too low this may result in poor quality output.
And yes you are right I'm using IMovie '11, quite confusing that '11 means version 9.0
Yes - very confusing! In the forums, iMovie versions are generally referred to by their year number, not version number. It's a pity that we have version 9.0 (iMovie '11) and iMovie '09.
Glad you liked the video - it looked very clear on YouTube at 1080p Full Screen, at least to my ageing eyes!

Problem: When I place an audio file in the IMovie timeline it places there OK, but it will not play.
Background: I think I understand that if I upgrade to OS 10.3, and IMovie 4 my problem is fixed.
Request: Is there any fix for my current configuration?

Some where along the line the DRM on iTunes Music Store songs was changed and I'm quite certain it will not work with iMovie 3.
I think you'll need to upgrade to at least iMovie 4 to solve your problem. Not sure where you can get that and iMovie 5 requires at least 10.3.4.
So as a work around you might try burning your songs to a music CD and then reimporting them.

AVCHD (HG10) and iMovie

Some information about AVCHD and iMovie. I've been looking for this before buying my HG10, so ...
Macbook (Intel Core Duo 1.83/2GB 10.4.10)
Canon HG10
External HD (import destination) : LaCie 500GB connected thru Firewire 400
Total movie duration (7 clips) : 08:51 (8 min 51 sec)
AVCHD files size : 967 MB
Import duration (Full Quality) : 21:32
Imported files size (Full Quality) : 4374.1 MB
Import duration (Large) : 15:39
Imported files size (Large) : 1246.6 MB
AVCHD files copy (HG10 -> External HD) : 00:30
Facts :
- When I copy the entire content of the HG10 on the External HD (root), this drive is detected as a camcorder by iMovie and I can import the MTS files.
- The PS3 can play the AVCHD files stored on the HG10 when connected thru USB
- AVCHD files stored on the PS3 can also be played but I had to change the extension to .mp4 (files transferred thru the PS3 browser)
Of course, it is not a surprise that the macbook (intel core duo) does not perform very well with AVCHD. Can you guys post some similar information with higher setup (new iMac, ...). Also, do you know a way to split/merge AVCHD files on MAC OS X ? So frustrating to import 1h of video in iMovie when you need to edit 2 min of this video.

I have the HG10 and here are some of my thoughts...
AVCHD is definitely a processor hungry codec, let's hope someday Apple or a third party will dedicate an add on processor much like the Turbo.264 but for IMPORTING AVCHD (to my knowledge the Elgato Turbo.264 only works when Quicktime exports)
As for artifacts, the only thing I have to compare is my older Sony Digital8 DV cam, and clearly the HG10 is a step up, I have become more realistic, there will be no sub $1000 camcorder that performs like a professional machine, in my research the "three chip" consumer cams have such small chips that any benefit from three chips is outweighed by the small amount of light these chips capture, but everyone will have their opinions my advice is to check out each, especially downloading example files and then playing them on the intended viewing screen, I can say the images from the HG10 look different when displayed on computer screen vs an HDTV via Apple tv and in all respects the quality is plenty for capturing the kids, and other memories. In the end it's about capturing the moment and no amount of resolution is going to change that. Aspiring film producers should probably save their cash and buy a professional camera, and consider it an investment in their career, for the rest of us we just want a decent camcorder that we don't have to mess around with tapes. The cost of not messing around with tapes is TIME and SPACE. these cameras generate a huge amount of data. Be realistic about what you intend on doing with the files
My experience with transferring files is the same as above, slow clip imports, depends on your CPU (mine a new late 2007 MacBook 2.0GHz) you can just copy the files from the drive which is quick, iMovie only recognizes if it's mounted as a drive, so either put it on an external, or better just make a disk image out of it. iMovie will recognize the mounted image as if you hooked up the camera, the whole file system needs to be there you can't just copy the stream file.
Overall I like the camera and will keep it, I chose the Canon because of the added benefits that I already own a digital rebel, same battery charger, batteries (you can use the small ones from the SLR on the HG10) so traveling for me will be lighter.
As is stated in the iMovie specs (you just have to look) AVCHD is NOT supported by PPC my Dual 2.0 GHz G5 won't recognize the camera (don't ask me the reasons I don't know, I assume they just didn't write the decoder software for the PPC, probably to encourage people to go out and get a new Mac. Something as a shareholder I'm entirely in favor of Once you import the files you can tranfer them to a PPC and iMovie will work just fine so for now I've been importing with my Macbook and then transferring the files to my G5, the MacBook shows some stuttering (probably dropped frames) compared editing on the G5, however my Macbook only has 1GB of RAM until the UPS guy comes today and then it will have 4GB

Sony Flip and imovie

My macbook is less then a year old and I have the 08 version of imovie. I am beginning to get into editing and wonder about editing video from the flip. Specifically the HD model. Does anyone have experience with this?

The MacBook should be adequate for basic editing. iMovie7 (from iLife '08) will get the job done.
As far as a flip goes, a camera is just a camera. They record footage. I'm not sure what the recording format is, but pretty much anything can be converted to a QuickTime format compatible with iMovie.
I would encourage you to start in standard definition with an ordinary mini-DV camera since the footage is directly compatible and easier to work with. HD is fine but will require more processing power in the edit and will have to be downconverted if you're planning on making DVDs or releasing to the web. Contrary to popular belief, High Definition formats are not supported for standard DVD creation. The gear and software to create a Blu-ray disc will run you several thousand more and most people can't play them.
After you learn how to edit and author, all bets are off...
