Quicktime 7.5 update, no audio in avi

Just "updated" my quicktime pro, and have lost audio for avi files, worked fine before update. I see this is not an isolated problem, LOTS of posts on the mac side. Apparently no support from apple on issues such as this? No testing before release?
Can I remove quicktime and reload the earlier version?

I had the same annoying problem and Apple rarely offers support in a timely fashion (if at all) so don't bother waiting for an answer from them. Here's a very easy solution that should do the trick:
- Quit Quicktime.
- Download and install Perlian from http://perian.org/ (it's free open source goodness!)
- Open your avi file and enjoy hearing your movie once more.
Yep, that's it! As long as your movie's audio is still intact when played in VLC or Windows Media Player, this fix should work. Best of luck!

  • No audio for avi files in Quicktime

Hi, like many others I'm having difficulty trying to restore audio to avi videos. It seems to be a codec related problem but I'm not sure.
    My Quicktime folder contains:
    AC3 MovieImport.component
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
    Perian.component
Is there another codec I need or do I need to delete one or more I already have?
Any help would be much appreciated

But then why has Quicktime played these avi video files with audio in the past? What has happened to the audio data? It's been mentioned by some that problems like this occurred after the 7.5 Quicktime update?
Frankly, I leave that up to you to find out. However, here are the logical options as I see them:
    1) The inspector is not seeing any audio because there is none.
1a) If the files never played audio, then it never contained any audio in the first place.
1b) If the files previously played and currently do not, then
1b1) Either you converted or deleted the audio content (check the "Properties" window if you have QT Pro or use either the Finder "Get Info" or another application to re-check for an audio track)
1b2) Updating QT or the addition of another codec has created a component conflict and you will have to run a conflict test to discover where the problem lies. Basically, updating the QT structure or adding a new component can alter the order that the QT Player/QT applications may call components. In some cases the components may "argue" over which component should be used. In other cases, the component being called first may be in conflict with another installed component whereas the previously "first called" component did not. (I.e., see hoodstar's recent "SALVATION" revelation comment regarding the same problem.)

  • Quicktime not play video only Audio with Lion

I am trying to watch avi file through Quicktime the I only get audio and no video after Lion installed.
    I downloaded Perian again
    Whats the problem?

There seems to be an issue with the version of Quicktime X (10.1) in Lion and Perian version 1.2.3.
The are several options in terms of other media players (VLC, MPlayerX, RealPlayer [ugh…], and others…) that will handle FLV files with ease. Alternatively, you could run your video files through an encoder (HandBrake, MPEG Streamclip, SmartConverter, etc.) converting the files into something QuickTime naturally understands like an MP4 or MOV.
But, you were probably happy when everything just worked with the QuickTime / Perian dynamic duo and just want it the way it was. It seems the best way to make this happen, is to go back to using Perian 1.2.2, for the moment anyway.  Seems to do the trick for anyone with this problem, so…
    1. Remove Perian 1.2.3 from the system.
Quit all your apps, expecially QuickTime. Open System Preferences and click on Perian.  You're looking for the "Remove Perian" button; just click and if it asks, type your password. Next, back to the main System Preferences screen where you right-click(or control-click) on the Perian icon.  A menu pops up with the choice to remove the Preference Pane.  Click on it and Perian is officially uninstalled.
    2. Restart the computer
Probably overkill, but better than having to repeat the process because you didn't.
    3. Download and install Perian 1.2.2
    Get it here: http://perian.cachefly.net/Perian_1.2.2.dmg , or here:http://www.videohelp.com/download/Perian_1.2.2.dmg
Once its downloaded mount the disk image, but proceed with care.  Perian will likley try to upgrade itself right after you install it. Best thing to do: disconnect from the net for the install process. Then as usual double-click the "Perian.prefpane" file, choose who you'd like to install it for, and enter your password as needed. Finally, right before reconnecting your machine to the world, uncheck the "Automatically Update" box in the Perian preferences.
Try testing one of the FLVs in QuickTime or QuickLook and with a bit of luck, radio becomes TV.
Oh… and on the off chance it doesn't work and you want to watch some FLVs?  Use VLC (http://www.videolan.org), or convert them with HandBrake (http://handbrake.fr).
    Good luck!

Quicktime Restarts Computer, Has NO Audio
    Quicktime  7.7.2 Restarts Computer.
    Summary:
    1.     Change the setting so the Computer does NOT Restart on Error.

Now Quicktime did NOT Crash but still had NO Audio (See below).
    Quicktime  7.7.2 has NO Audio.
    Summary:
    1.     Install an older version of Quicktime (Ex. 7.6.5)
    •     I Updated the SoundBlaster Audigy Driver from the Internet (Still NO Audio when running Quicktime).
    •     Now that the Drivers were Updated, I Uninstalled and then re-installed Quicktime to see if it would make a difference  (Still NO Audio when running Quicktime).
    •     Trying something else - I installed an older Version of Quicktime ( I used 7.6.5).
Now Audio worked when using Quicktime.
    Computer Specs:
    •     AMD 3000+
    •     3GB RAM.
    •     Windows XP Service Pack 3.
    •     ATI Video Card.
    •     SoundBlaster Audigy Sound Card.
Extra Notes:  Even with my Windows 7 Computer - I only have 7.6.7 - it also works correctly - with audio.

Qualcomm Pure Voice is still an export option in version 7.3 (as it has been in every version).
It fails to play in 7.3 as others have noticed. I didn't catch it in my beta tests of this version and expect it to be fixed with an updated version.
I just tested exports using that codec and they do play the audio. Only a few Pure Voice audio tracks I have on my machine fail. All use 22.050 Hz at mono settings.
    A bug.

  • No longer audio on .avi files when attempting to use Elements 9

I have compiled 20 years of videos from family videos and converted them to .avi files.  I now want to edit these files into other smaller videos to give to my children.  I have Premiere Elements 9.  When I get one of these files using PE9 there is no longer audio on them.
There is audio if I play them on Windows Media Player but no audio on Quicktime Player.
I can edit in Windows Movie Maker but not in PE9.
The Quicktime Player states the following:
Format: Motion JPEG Open DML, 640 x 480, millions
    Movie FPS 29.97
    Playing FPS 29.97
    Data Size 1.94 gb
    Data Rate 8.67 mbits/sec
    Normal Size 640 x 480 pixels
    Current Size 640 x 480 pixels
I have a Dell Inspiron 530, 4.0 gb RAM, 32- Bit Windows Vista system.  Plenty of Hard Drive availability.
I purchased PE9 because I thought it would be superior to Windows Movie Maker.  Very frustrated.

    Hi Bill,
The .avi file is a compilation of videos from multiple cameras from over the years.  There is no 1 camera.  That is why I am confused here.

What camera produced the MJPEG files, wrapped in the AVI container? The reason that I ask this, is because camera mfgrs. love to tweak CODEC's, and some take that tweaking to an extreme. If you have the utility disc, that came with the camera, it is probably best to install their particular version of the MJPEG CODEC. The Morgan, or the MainConcept might work OK, but having the exact version, from the camera mfgr. will get you as close, as is possible, and will save having to buy an MJPEG CODEC, that might not be perfect. Now, on that utility disc, one might have one of three possible choices: The MJPEG CODEC might be a separate installationThe MJPEG CODEC might install along with the camera's driverThe MJPEG CODEC might install with an included editing/cataloguing program (most common nowadays), and even if you do not use that utility, having the proper version of the MJPEG CODEC installed on the system, will get you as close, as is possible Good luck, and let us know if you have the utility disc for that camera. • Quicktime 7.4 Update

I ran autoupdate last night, and most of the updates went fine. However, the Quicktime 7.4 Update gave me a message that the installation could not be completed (which I didn't actually write down). I did get a blue screen, but then the computer just shut it self off and rebooted. I ran autoupdate again, and the Quicktime update completed. Before the update all my applications were working.
    Here are the update logs:
    2008-01-21 20:14:10 -0600: Installed "GarageBand Update" (4.1.1)
    2008-01-21 20:14:18 -0600: Installed "iMovie Update" (7.1.1)
    2008-01-21 20:14:29 -0600: Installed "Front Row Update" (2.1.2)
    2008-01-21 20:15:18 -0600: Installed "iTunes" (7.6)
    2008-01-21 20:15:50 -0600: Installed "Security Update 2007-009" (1.1)
    2008-01-21 20:26:02 -0600: Installed "QuickTime" (7.4)
I also have the consol logs from the failed installation. I have several minutes of
1/21/08 8:22:33 PM StickyBrainService[189] Unable to establish admin connection to OpenBaseServer...Retrying
I'm really not sure what I need to be looking for in the Console Messages (which is probably pretty clear).
Following the second installation of Quicktime, the computer restarted correctly but all my applications became unstable. At this point I can open Safari and Mail, but they go straight into fatal errors. I'm not sure how many other applications are effected, but nothing seems to stay running for more than an hour. The errors I'm getting right now are
    Exception Type: EXCBADINSTRUCTION (SIGILL)
    Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000091ca2c40
    Crashed Thread: 0
I noticed that this problem happened to a lot of people on installation of Leopard, so I removed my Safari preferences from the user Library. Before I did that I was receiving a (SIGFAULT) exception type. Removing preferences did not fix the problem, nor did resetting Safari.
I also ran Disk Utility, which found no problems with the hard drive.
Do I need to reinstall Leopard?
In addition to Quicktime, I have the Adobe Suite, VLC, and RealPlayer installed on this computer. I do have iLife installed, but I haven't checked to see if those applications are affected.

    Hi everyone
QT 7.4 update problem with .mp4 files is very serious. There are many others complaints about this elsewhere in quicktime discussions and on the web.
It seem that only these with mpeg-4 video code are “broken” : no video only audio. mp4 files with H.264 video encoding plays fine.
Also, these mpeg-4 files can’t be use no longer with other applications like MPEG Streamclip 1.9, Toast 7 and DIVX Player 2.1. (These only I’ve tested). Same thing with CoverFlow mode and FrontRow 2.1
But they play fine with iTunes 7.6 and VLC 0.8.6.
I'm afraid we have to wait another update to fix this.

  • Lost audio from AVI file

I have Quicktime PRO and need to edit some avi files. Upon opening up some DIVX files, I have lost the audio. Their is a prompt saying I need some plug ins and dropped me on the quicktime plugin page. I read through all the plug ins but I am not sure what the problem is.
Does anyone know how I can bring back the audio in these files? Many thanks.

i'm not near my GB machine to test this, but see if you can Share to Disk and make sure the Compress checkBox is not selected.

  • OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:

OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:
The problem on my Intel Mac mini with external Klipsch speakers (two mid-range/high and a subwoofer) is REAL obvious as the system emits a hum like a Spinal Tap amplifier turned up to #11 when 10.4.10 powers down the audio circuitry
Then, if I play a song in iTunes, it first pops and the hum disappears right before playing.
Quite annoying. I restored the mini from a recent backup to 10.4.9. Problem gone.
I'm glad I test updates on the mini before applying them to my Intel iMac 24. I guess I'll just hide & watch what happens before doing any more updates.
Here's what I sent to Apple tech support:
    Guys/Gals (OS X Engineers):
Concerning the Snap, Crackle Pop Audio problem in the 10.4.10 update:
Please. Just do the right thing and fix the audio.
There is no need to power cycle the audio subsystem to save .0005 amps on the laptop line.
And then to make your Mac mini/iMac/other desktop users have to put up with it when using AC power is ridiculous.
Put the audio subsystem back like it was in 10.4.9 and let the laptop battery freaks looking for mini-amp savings get a "work-a-round".

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:

I have been sampling new imported drum loops. And if I adjust region to song or time strecth it updates the audio file in the library. How to stop this? I lost the original setting to one loop. automatically doing it ??

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Ripping audio from AVI

    Hi,
I wasn't sure where to post this question. I didn't see a forum that looked apropriate, and since I'm using an iMac G5 I thought this one was as good as any other. So, what I'm after is software that will allow me to extract audio from AVIs, MPGs, etc. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi,
Just wanted to follow up on my original post. I first tried using a freeware AVI spitter called Explicit, then importing the 9-12 minute pieces into iMovie. There was a few problems with this method, though. First, it took around 15 minutes to import one 9-12 minute AVI segment. Second, after it was imported and converted into DV format (the format iMovie uses) it was something like a gig in size. Lastly, the audio, the thing I was after, was completely mangled. So, I downloaded Divx Doctor 2, converted the AVI, and then was able to use Peak (a great audio editing program by BIAS) and was able to extract all the audio and save it as AIFF. I could have actually saved it to any one of several formats, at 16 or 24 bits, for those who aren't familiar with the program. By the way, you can convert more than AVIs with Divx Doctor 2.
Thanks so much for the link! Hopefully this info will help someone else looking for to get samples from movies.

  • Play a QuickTime file with eight separate audio channels

I'm trying to play a QuickTime file with eight separate audio channels but they only play in stereo......  the same QT file will play all 8 channels separately in Qlab, which has separate level controls for each channel, and which "sees" my Digidesign 002 audio interface.  But QT does not recognize the interface, nor does Audio MIDI Setup utility, apparently.....  it will play all 8 channels mixed to stereo through channels 1 and 2

The following will answer both your questions a) and b).
Click on your master timeline and press cmd+0 (zero) to bring up Sequence Settings, then click on the Audio Outputs tab on the right. Click on the Outputs option and change it to 6. You can leave them as Stereo pairs.
Now, back on your timeline, you need to make sure all your audio is organised so each track. A1, A2, A3, A4 etc has all the relevant media on it.
Then, on the left of the timeline you see the Destination toggle buttons, then you see the Padlocks to lock tracks, then you have the Toggle Auto Select squares. If you right-click on the Toggle Auto Select squares you bring up a little sub-menu, at the top of this list you'll see Audio Outputs, which will show the stereo channels for that particular track. As you've changed the number of Audio Outputs in the Sequence Settings, the list will show: 1&2, 3&4, 5&6. You just tick whichever channels you want.
In your case, you have dialogue on the first 4 tracks, no problem, just go down through tracks 1,2,3 and 4 as described above and assign these to Audio Outputs 1&2.
Then just go down through your music and effects audio tracks and assign them accordingly.
Now, when you export your timeline as a self-contained media file, it will have different audio channels.
I hope that makes sense. When you change the number of audio outputs as described in the first step, I believe the rest of it is fairly self explanatory, once you know where the settings are.
