Quicktime 7.6.6 Pro vs 10.0 for converting VIDEO_TS to DV

First - Please refer to This Thread I started in the iDVD Forum.
Klaus in the link above said I needed two components to Convert DVD to Dv. Can this be done with those components in QuickTime V10 or only in QuickTime 7 Pro. Currently I'm using Snow Leopard with V10, but I could port QuickTime 7.6.6 over from my G4. Any help would be appreciated.

When I convert the VIDEO_TS files with Steamclip to DV, it creates the file as 720x480. Is that the resolution I should be using for converting the >Dv file to m4v for Apple TV.
Yes, this is correct. Both DV and MPEG-2 files a based on a "so-called" rectangular pixel aspect ratio. (720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL). The same encode matrix (720x480 or 720x576) is used to encode both 640X480 (4:3) or 853x480 (16:9) NTSC and 768x576 (4:3) or 1024x576 PAL display files. The only real difference is between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect files is the difference in PAR value embedded (or missing) within the encoded file and, as mentioned above, is one of the reasons I recommend users nat familiar with PAR encoding use the AIC video codec which is not based on a "broadcast" standard.
If I try to covert the VIDEO_TS files directly to m4v for Apple TV, the resolution is 960x540. Can't seem to get it to any other resolution no matter what settings I select.
The TV preset is based on compatibility issues between the TV1 and the TV2 devices. Basically, TV1 files are limited to 960x540 display limitations at frame rates greater than 25 fps. On the other hand, the TV2 device can play 1280x720 (720p) files at a full 30 fps. So, when creating TV compatible files, the preset opts to use dimensions compatible with both devices. If you want to 1280x720 files, simply use the preset to set up the preliminary encoding values and then change the dimensions before you actually start the encoding process. As long as you do not re-select the TV preset option, the increased dimensions will be used.
It of course looks slightly stretched out on my HD TV screen.
Actually, 1280x720, 960x540, 720x405, 640x360, 480x270, and 320x180 are common file dimensions all having the same aspect ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1) and should look the same, "relatively" speaking, assuming the source file aspect was 16:9.

If QuickTime Player 7 isn't in the Utilities folder automatically, you can install it separately. See:

Instructions on how to register your QuickTime Pro key can be found in that same document.

  • Trouble exporting Quicktimes from Avid Express Pro?

Hello! I'm operating Avid Express Pro version 4.3.0 on a G5 Mac OS 10.3.9 and I recently upgraded to QuickTime 7.1.5. I can no longer export quicktimes from Avid Express Pro because it is not compatible with this version of Quicktime. It's only compatible with QT 6.5.2. I've tried to use the reinstaller 6.5.2 and it doesn't work as it cannot seem to find 6.5.2 on my system. I now can't load 6.5.2 as I already have a higher version of quicktime on my system. I've tried deleting QuickTime files and starting from scratch and did delete a few items, but dragged the majority back into my computer from the trash as I realized I didn't know what I was doing and which 3rd party programs also utilized QuickTime.
If I wish to reinstall QuickTime 6.5.2 but the reinstaller won't work, what would you recommend?
    HUGE thanks!

  • Can Quicktime X and 7 Pro coexist?

Can Quicktime X and 7 Pro coexist? Can you have both installed at the same time? I would guess not. Man I really had to bite my tongue on this post! Okay, just one word - hodgepodge.

Hold it right there. One issue I found that I is causing me fits right now is that even if you have both X and 7 Pro installed it still has some how corrupted some of my export settings in compressor. Specifically it appears that the FLV quicktime export component is now non-functioning and only produces .FLV's with a very bad flicker in them:

In addition and I guess on a tangent I would recommend to any pro editors to do the clean install that so many have suggested for both Snow Leopard and the New FCP Studio as I am already having round tripping issues in color, and have experienced some crashes within Final Cut 7.0
Now I want to make clear that these are my assumptions before some engineer jumps down my throat. It is entirely possible that these issues are solely mine own and are not common or widespread but from a quick review of these forums I am not sure that is the case. But having the issues I have experienced since upgrading both softwares I made the decision today to initiate a 7 pass erase of the HD and a totally new install to achieve the speed and functionality that keeps me sane and not homicidal.

  • When exporting as a quicktime movie, final cut pro crashes!

When exporting as a quicktime movie, final cut pro crashes about 3/4ths the way through the 12 hour process. I'm saving it to a La Cie 500 GB disc by fire wire. It's worked before but after I converted one SD sequence (that was shot in HD)to a HD sequence, I haven't been able to export it and it won't play straight at anything bigger than 25% size. Please if you have any advice I won't forget it. I'm trying to export as ProHD 1060i.

How, exactly? And what were the settings of your new HD sequence? DVCPRO HD 1080 60i?

  • I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (.m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing)

I get the error message in QuickTime "operation stopped the operation is not supported for this media" most times when I try and export an .AVI file as something else (e.g. .m4v). I have not touched the file in any way (no trimming, clipping or other editing), all I want QuickTime to do is export the file in a compressed format. Bizzarely, if I shutdown and open QuickTime many times I can occasionally export a clip as another format (maybe one in 10 times). I have seen that other users have had a similar problem after clipping files in QuickTime but this seems to be a slightly different bug in that all I do is open the file and then try and export the file as is - either way, this is a very annoying bug

@Z_B-B, thank you for taking the time to respond to my cry for help. However, the link you supplied does not address the problem: I am not trying to export from Final Cut Pro to QuickTime, I am trying to export from QuickTime to the rest of the world (like people's iPhones and Ipads) in .m4v format (so I am not emailing my freinds such huge files).
If I were to spend hundreds of Dollars on a copy of Final Pro I could export directly from there and not have to bother with QuickTime, but I do not take enough video clips to justify the cost. I must say that I never had any of these problems before I decided to switch from Snow Leopard to Mountai Lion.

I can record with it using Quicktime (although the framerate really is slow) but for some reason the camera is not available in the pick list when I click on the camera icon in imovie 08. Is this a bug? Should imovie 08 be able to detect my camera?

I cannot connect to my outgoing email server on my macBook pro, yet I can, for the same email account on my iPad. Also I can send emails from the other email account I have on my MacBook...really confused can anyone help?

Sometimes deleting the account and then re-creating it can solve this issue
Write down all the information in accounts before doing this
Highlight the account on the left and click the minus button
Then click the plus button to add the new account and follow the prompts

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

How can I install logic pro 7.2 (made for power pc) on a brand new Macbook pro with OSX 10.7.4?
This message appears: You can't open the aplication LogicPro.mpkg because power pc aplications are no longer compatible.
    Thanks folks

You should be able to copy all the files from your old computer, although it might not work if the old machine didn't have an intel processor. When I got a new Mac a few months ago, I used the migration assistant to copy everything from my old computer's time machine backup disk. All my old pro apps, such as Final Cut Pro 6, work fine on the new machine under Lion.
Later, I wanted to install Soundtrack pro and couldn't do it from the original disks. So I installed it on my old machine and copied the files. It worked perfectly.

  • ICal on my MacBook Pro has been "updating" for days...??

I have an iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad and iPhone.  I have been using iCloud since it came out (running Lion).  iCal on my MacBook Pro has been "updating" for several days.  Also - when I add an event on the MacBook, it does not show up on any of my other devices (they are all set up with the same iCloud calendars).  When I add events from my other devices, they DO show up in iCal on my Macbook Pro.
I am at a loss -- any help would be VERY much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Kim

    Hello
Chance upon your post and yes, immediately after upgarding to Mountain Lion, my "new" Calendar (Desktop, formely known as 'iCal') keeps having the pop up window saying "Updating Calendar..." (I set my Calendar to auto-launch after Startup)
After restarting it will still be the same, but if I quit and launch again, everything will be fine.  Will try the method you posted (the thread) tonight.  Although I deleted the iCal preferences, thinking/hoping it will help
However, I don't seem to have a problem with sycning of al events, my sync with iCloud and all my macs and iOS devices seem OK.
If events are not syncing into some of your iOS devices, why don't you try deleting the entire iCloud account on it and re-set a new one?  I've done that before when events or other data don't properly sync
    Cheers
