Quicktime 7.7.4 locking Firefox Windows 8.1 pro preview

My own website has on the index page an embedded music file. Until recently this feature played very nicely, however after reloading all the plugins after installing the Win 8.1 preview and then Quicktime my front page locks up about 90% of the time. Any suggestions?
Sincerely,
ErikavonT

Thank you for the input. Something has changed, I don't know what exactly. The file is .mp3 format. The thing has worked properly for years however recently 1. upgraded main computer to Win 8.1 PRO Preview from 8 Enterprise;  requiring fresh FF and QT installs and 2. Bought a new laptop and installed Firefox and a new copy of Quicktime. I don't think the prob is Quicktime. That's always been a rock.
Both operations were fresh recently.
I have been doing a lot of editing on my website lately, But I went back and looked at the virgin code of the site from several years ago and it hasn't changed. One computer has antivirus with the web enabled and one doesn't have any AV on it right now. So that's not it either.
When the page locks firefox pops up a box saying Quicktime is busy, wait or turn it off. Waiting goes indefinately, turning it off closes the browser but frees up the machine. it really is jamming it up.
There could also be somethng with the latest Windows / Microsoft updates too. Those don't always function the way they are supposed to either. The stories I could tell you about service packs at the server level that have been defective. That nightmare came with an apology from Microsoft but the damage had already caused me a client when their mail server Went down and took forever to get the problem sorted out and the service pack removed.
I think the next experiment will be using Exploder... YUK. But if its plug in is stable? This needs to play on all browsers, it is MY SITE, not Dave's or Joe's.
Thanks for the reply.

  • Getting media to open in Quicktime Player, not inside the Firefox window

I have this strange issue where any media files want to open inside Firefox with the QT plugin, regardless of what I have selected for the MIME settings in the Quicktime preference pane.
I mainly want the m3u files to open in the separate QT player, because it's annoying that when I preview music in eMusic Firefox loads it up in a new page and I have to click Back to get back to the album's page, and I have to wait until the preview has finished otherwise it stops.
I've tried in Safari, and it works fine. eMusic's m3u files open up in QT instead as I want. It seems to be just Firefox that's not recognizing my QT preferences. I've tried quitting and reopening Firefox to no avail. At least I can work around it by opening the preview links in tabs.

"there's no option to add stuff to
    the list."
    Yes there is!
Click on the "View & Edit
    Actions" button.
The next window that opens up, scroll to whatever
    plug-in you want to change-Quicktime Plug-in.
    Click the "Change Action" button.
The problem is, I don't see an option for m3u files in the list. The only things that show up for me are MP4, PNG, TIFF, XLS, RM, and EMP.
And as I mentioned, I do not see an "Add" or "+" button anywhere to manually add M3U to the list. The only buttons are remove and change. Perhaps that's something that's just missing in my copy (I'm using version 1.5.0.7, BTW). Perhaps my installation got hosed somehow. Maybe I'll try re-downloading and reinstalling it.

  • Most recent version of Mozilla Firefox (Windows 7 64 Pro) will open but not display any content in the open browser window.

After logging into Laptop, Win 7 64bit Pro and launching Mozilla Firefox the browser window opens but the content is blank or black. Mouse over produces change and the only thing I can get to display is when I click in the area the Config/Setup icon would be on the tool bar.
Even uninstalled and then reinstalled the latest versions of Firefox but still getting the exact same results. Yesterday there were many Windows Updates applied to my computer but after rebooting post updates, Firefox was working fine for the entire day and evening.

hello spitcher, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

  • After iTunes/Quicktime update, no flash in Firefox

    Hi,
I have now several times had the same problem after I updated iTunes and quicktime, the flash objects in Firefox get the question mark.
I did extensive search on this on the web, apple forum and firefox forum and have now found one solution that has worked couple of times for me.
After the iTunes/Quicktime is updated, and you get question marks instead of flash objects.
    Solution:
    1. Close firefox
    2. Go to the firefox plugins directory. Can be found at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
    3. Remove all npqtplugin.dll files (usually 7 of them, numbered as npqtplugin[2..7].dll).
    4. Start firefox, and test some flash based page.
This solution works at Windows 2000, Firefox 2.x and latest iTunes/Quicktime.

I don't understand, where on my computer is such a Firefox plug ins list.
My situation is similar, but I notice Quicktime/Flash failures on ALL my browsers...I.E., Netscape, Real Player. Isn't this something Apple should be taking care of, having messed up our software with their download?
How do I reverse the download-Quicktime 7.1.5, etc?
    Thanks
    John

  • Machine freezez/lock ups when using password protected certificates in IE 11 Windows 8.1 Pro

When using certificates that have a password enabled and private keys we find the machine hangs up competly with the memory usage jumping to 99%. The main process being the Local Secuirty Authority Process that causes the machine to lock up. The work
around we have is to remove this certificate and import a new certificate making sure we un-tick the check box for private key password.
    Not sure if this
KB2813237 is linked, but this hotfix is available for Windows 8.1 Pro OS.

    Hi  Simon,
You can try that suggestion and check whether it is solved and give your result, if there is any other issue, you can post it back.

  • The Firefox window doesn't open at all I can't run safe mode or make other trubleshot changes

since yesterday 08/10/2011 the Firefox window doesn't open at all I can't run safe mode or make other trubleshot changes. When I click on the desktop short-cut the Firefox windows starts loading but before open is crushing.I have sent several messages to you but no answer and my Firfox is not working.

Which version of Firefox and which OS are you using?
There are other ways of opening safe mode given at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode - See if that helps.

  • How do I block an ad that opens up a new Firefox window and keeps telling me my system performance is poor? I can't even capture the link.

This particular ad, supposedly from a Windows Certified Partner, opens in a second Firefox window and keeps flashing the message that my System Performance is Poor, wanting me to click on their ad and let them do whatever nasty things they want to my system. I have not been able to capture the path but next time it comes up, I will write down all that I can see.
If I have closed my main Firefox screen first, and then close out this ad, the next time I open Firefox, the ad opens and all my standard tabs are gone, requiring me to reopen each one seperately (Facebook, Google, etc).

Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
Here are some other things to check:
    (1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    (2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    (3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
    (4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
    Hopefully that cures it.

  • Clicking on a link will pop up another firefox window and nothing in box and I cannot open original link. What do I need to do?

This has just started happening since last update of Firefox. I will be on a website, and I click on a link. Clicking on link brings up another Mozilla Firefox window with a blank window and at top of window, it asks for "type web address" in navigation bar. This has just started happening. I have gone a checked for LINK preferences or anything I could find to get this to stop. Before this last update, I could go to any link of any website. Please advise on what I should try. Thanks

Thanks Jason, I had the same problem and did exactly the steps above. Problem solved! You rock! :)

  • I downloaded Firefox to my Macbook, but when I drag it to the dock and open it, I get a blank Firefox window and so can't run Firefox.

Firefox shows properly downloaded with 18.7 meg. I dragged from the download folder into the Applications folder. When I try to drag from the Apps folder to the Dock, Firefox will not stay in the dock but instead shows on the desktop. When I click on the Firefox logo on the desktop, a Firefox window appears, with no options to do anything.

I downloaded firefox again, deleted the earlier version, and now firefox is working properly.

G'day again, I've also lost the option of a 'Stop loading' or 'Refresh' button.

  • How to stop Firefox windows stealing focus from other Firefox windows?

I am using Firefox 26.0 on Windows 7 and tend to brows using multiple windows instead of tabs. Frequently when I click on a link in one window, the new page will begin to load and suddenly a firefox window that is in the back ground pops to the front, stealing the focus from the window I had been browsing in.
There is no consistent pattern as to which websites or pages are loaded into the background windows that suddenly decide to steal focus. Likewise there is no pattern as to which links or actions I use that seem to cause this to happen.
Is this a known issue? It is driving me absolutely nuts!

It could be a bug in the Flash Player plugin, caused by the protected mode feature. This thread has the background on that and known workarounds: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/955659 Opening New Windows and Shockwave Flash].

  • Ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox although my mac switches to the firefox window as this is my default browser- what to do? Previously this has always worked without a hitch...

ince updating my firefox browser whenever i click on an internet link in an email it does not open on firefox athough my mac switches to the firefox window as i have this set to be my default browser- what should i do?

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • As of 2/19/12 I could open two independent firefox windows and they did not share cookies. As of now (2/23/12) if I open two independent firefox windows they do share cookies. How do I get them to stop sharing cookies?

When google decided to change their privacy and sharing policies I started using two different windows to do all internet browsing and work. I would open my gmail in one window and then do everything else in another window so that google couldn't tie my searches and other internet activity together with my google accounts.
This process was working well for me until about three days ago, when all of a sudden my two Firefox windows started sharing cookies. I know for a fact they had not been sharing cookies previously because I personally go in and clear them after I visit certain websites.
From my research on this issue it seems that in the past this was the default way all firefox windows operated (sharing cookies with one another), so I don't know why I managed to get several weeks of not sharing cookies and suddenly they are sharing. But I just want to go back to the way it was just this weekend. Please help or I'll be forced to use IE and that would be sad.

Firefox stores cookies on a per site basis.
I am guessing that what you are seeing is that Google is sharing cookies across its own sites.
It is possible (an advanced subject not normally covered in this forum) to open multiple instances of Firefox with separate profiles, and thus separate cookies. A more normal method of achieving that is to use a separate user OS account. Or possibly to use firefox portable.
I have not myself followed news of Googles cookies policies, but I see it is in the news again http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/02/22/ico_enquires_about_google_system_for_serving_third_party_cookies/

  • When I open a new firefox window, and click the + to open a new tab, my first page disappears - I can only seem to return to it by closing all the other tabs.

    The issue occurs like this:
    1. Open a new window
    2. Enter a URL and go to a page (any page).
    3. Click the + and open a new tab.
    4. The first tab is no longer visible in the tabs bar.
    5. I keep opening lots of other tabs and the first tab stays invisible (all the others stay visible / accessible).
    6. The only way I've found to return to the first tab is to close all my other tabs.
This doesn't always happen (i.e. I can have two firefox windows open and only one of them does it!)
I'm not sure if it's a feature or something? But it's very annoying!
    Any ideas welcomed.
    Thanks

Hi - yes I can! I hadn't noticed that little arrow before, thanks.
However I would really like to stop it hiding the first tab all the time.... Even when I navigate to the first tab using that "list all tabs" arrow, it still remains 'hidden' (i.e. I can't see a tab up the top, even when that tab is active. And when I navigate away from it to another tab, it is invisible again).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • When closing Firefox windows, I would like a warning before the last window closes. The about:config settings do nothing. There is a warning for multiple tabs..

When closing Firefox windows, I would like a warning before the last window closes. The about:config settings do nothing. There is a warning for multiple tabs... why not for the last window? I do not use tabs... just windows... I have a mouse button programmed for that. It is really irritating to have to restart Firefox all the time and then open the history window because no warning was issued!

This is ridiculous. I've had this problems for years now and I'm finally walking away from Firefox. I use my keyboards more than my mouse, and how many times does your finger slip and hit Command Q instead of W. How come FF can't reset something as trivial as this? So many people are having problems with this?
Feels like FF has become too big, too slow and just not cooperative anymore. What a shame, I've been using Netscape/Firefox for 13 years. This is silly.
