Quicktime 7 doesn't play extracted .mov files

Hi,
I am on an iMac OS X 10.5.8, and using quicktime 7.
I downloaded a tutorial torrent using Utorrent, it gave me 32 .rar files that I extracted with UnRarX, then it gave me a folder with 32 .mov files which opens by default with quicktime. I can press play, it shows the lenght of the video but there is no picture and no sound, I tried to open it with DivX player, now I have sound but still no picture. Anyone ?!

Format: Sorenson Video 3 Decompressor, 800 x 600, Millions +
The Sorenson Video 3 (SV3) codec is somewhat old and belongs to the "legacy" group. You may want to check to see if the "Legacy Encoders" option is set in the "Registration > Advanced" preference window. (Not sure if this option is required for playback or only for encoding purposes. Also not sure if the legacy version built into QT is compatible with SV3 Pro Codec used by Sorenson Squeeze.) In any case, my guess would be that the audio (not mentioned by you) may be MP3 which is commonly used with both DivX and FLV files. In any event, not being a Sorenson codec user, that is about all I can say at this point without seeing/testing a sample snippet.

  • Quicktime won't play my .mov files since I upgraded to Mavericks.

Quicktime won't play my .mov files, even those from an iPhone, since I installed Mavericks.  "Tell Me More" doesn't tell me anything about a solution.  Any suggestions?

    What do I do?
Frankly, if you have deleted the original movie clips from your camera/camcorder and iPhoto, then it sounds as if you are up the proverbial creek without a paddle and there is nothing further that you can do.
    Some facts:
For some reason, the movieclips are awful small (13-30 KB).
    640 x 480
    Codecs: H.264, AAC
While these facts are of little value without file duration information, as you yourself have already noted, the file sizes quoted are extremely small. A typical VGA H.264/AAC file of reasonable quality would normally have a combined total data rate in the 700 to 1,700 Kbps range depending on specific settings, profile, and level of the encoding software and could be even higher or lower depending on the quality levels required. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that files in the 13 to 30 KB range only contain 104 to 240 Kbs and either have durations measured in fractions of seconds or do not actually contain enough data to be played. (E.g., the video data may be missing or the file is corrupted.) Thus, it is most likely that something was wrong with the workflow used to "export" your files to the external drive and when you ignored the fact that the files were not playing correctly, you closed the door on anything that you could do when you deleted the source files. (I.e., the normal workflow here is to copy the entire iPhoto library to the external drive, switch libraries, confirm the new library is working properly and only then delete the boot drive copy of the iPhoto library.)
OBS: When I try to convert the files into something else (AVI, MP4 whatever) either it comes with an error, nothing happens or the converted file wont open. This happens with various convert-programs.
If the data in the files is missing, then there is nothing to be converted by any application.

  • Playing 1080p movie files

    Hi
I have a 1080p mkv video file which i am trying to play on my iMac. it opens the file and i can hear the sound and then i get a error and it stops. i have ran 720p without a problem but wondering if 1080p was possible. i normally use vlc player. Any help would be much appreciated.

If the 720 files play, and the 1080 doesn't, it may be your 1 GB of RAM that is the problem.
Also, if you are opening the file from online, and letting it stream, are you waiting until enough of it is in place before starting to play it?
I'm not sure what an "mkv" video file is, and I'm not familiar with "vlc" player; but my Intel iMac has 4 GB of RAM, and I'm able to play 1080 movie files using QuickTime player.

  • HT3523 I can play an .mov file but cannot open it to move it to another drive/disc/etc. When we try to open it, we get a message that says "The movie file for "beanmine.mov" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly."

We can play a .mov file (a full-length film created in final cut pro) but cannot actually open it in QuickTime. We get the error message saying that a file is missing, and the movie can't play properly without the file. The thing is, we can play the film, we just can't open it to move it to another drive. Help?
Also, can the lost file (which was deleted) be recovered from a Mac HD or an external hard drive?

Sounds like you created a "Reference" file here. I.e., a "Reference" file is a file that tells the player how to play the data contained in a "Resource" file. When you try to open the "Reference" file in the QT Player app, the first thing the player does is check to see if the "Resource" data file is is still available where it is supposed to be. (I.e., moving/deleting the resource file or moving reference file without moving the resource file to maintain the relative path between the two will generate the error message you mentioned.)
Also, can the lost file (which was deleted) be recovered from a Mac HD or an external hard drive?
That depends. Deleting a file does not actually erase the data immediately. Instead, the operating system just tells the system directory that the space containing the movie data is available for reuse if/when needed. As time passes, the chance that some of the data sectors will be re-written by other data continuously increases. To restore the file normally requires use of a special utility that both locates and restores all of the linked sectors containing the "deleted" movie data in their correct order. Other methods of restoring files would depend on the software you routinely have active on your system. For instance, do you use "TimeMachine?" or orther software that automatically backs up your data periodically? If so, then follow the instructions for your particular application to recover a deleted file.

  • Playing a .mov file on ipad

    Hello,
I cannot open/play a .mov file from my dropbox on my ipad. Message <<file type is not currently supported>>. I made the movie with imovie and it works fine on my computer. I am also capable of using video in the photo center. How come I cannot open it from dropbox? Is there another way to send the video to my ipad and save it there.
    thanks!!!

    Hi loliza,
If you are having issues opening a .mov file directly from Dropbox, you may be able to sync it to your iPad from iTunes. You can also verify that the file plays directly in iTunes, and/or see if it may be necessary to convert/create an iPad-specific version. You may find the following articles helpful:

  • Quicktime will not play any video files

When trying to play any compatible video files .mov, .mp4 etc... all I get is a small black box in the upper left corner of the screen. The computer is not frozen I can close the window with the red x. I can open Quicktime and the web stuff opens but opening a video file on the computer causes this. I confirmed the latest version of Quicktime in installed and I have confirmed the video files I'm trying to play work on another computer and the .mp4 file plays in media player on this computer. The video card driver is up to date. I want to play my .mov files from my iphone but can't.

all I get is a small black box in the upper left corner of the screen.
Curious ... I wonder if this is a blown-out display preference?
Could you check something for me please? Create a new user account on the PC with full sdminidtrative rights. Log out of your usual account and log into the new account. Try playing a file in the new account. Does it display properly?
If it works okay in the new account, let's try to get things working in the normal account again with the instructions from the following thread:

  • Playing AVI movie files??

Help. I have 3 Macs: G4 Flat Panel, Imac G5- which play AVI movie files just fine. Mac Mini (specs below) which does not. Been at it for hours. The two older ones are non-intel, the mini is intel, this is the only difference I can see. I have the same software and plug-ins installed; (quicktime pro, flip for mac, windows media player, divx plug-in, xvid) All of them are running 10.4.11. When I put in a movie encoded in AVI in the mini I get a prompt that says roughly 'additional software plugin might be needed', can't think of anything else to do. Any info appreciated. Thank you.

If anyone else has this problem with an intel based mac here is link that solved my problem.

  • XP hangs when I try to play a .mov file

Windows XP consistently hangs when I try to play a .mov file using QuickTime 7.4.1. There is no way to regain control of the system without powering off the computer. I've seen a number of postings indicating that people who have RAID disk systems are having similar problems, but I have an ordinary EIDE drive. Also, my .mov files are typically small (less than 40 MB). Device manager shows that all devices are working, and I've made sure that I have the latest graphics and sound drivers installed. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

  • Quicktime 10 won't open .mov file

I use MPEG Streamclip (v1.9.2) to create .MOV files. However, since upgrading to OSX Lion (10.7.1) and QuickTime 10.1 (501), I can no longer play the .MOV files with QuickTime. As a test, I downloaded QuickTime 7.6.6 (1709) and it's able to play the .MOV files fine.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening? I know that MPEG Steamclip has a new beta version, but I don't think it's the issue here.

Does this also apply for files in .m4v made with Handbrake? oO
Because when I try to play my movies with Quicktime Player it says a codec is missing... (Perian is installed)

  • HT3775 trying to play a .mov file

I am trying to play a .mov file that I transferred to my macbook from my camera. I have tried itunes, quicktime and VLC and can not get it to play. I thought .mov was supported by quicktime, does it need to be converted?

I have come to the conclusion that my memory card is the problem. Yet we were able to transfer all the footage from the card on to my other roommates pc with no problem.
You can reformat the SD card for OSX compatibility using Disk Utility. Either format it as FAT, for universal compatibility, or Mac Os Extended for OSX only compatibility. Note that all current data on the card will be deleted once it is reformatted.

  • Cannot Play .DAT Movie Files in Real Player/Java Media Player

    Hi,
I wanted to play some movie files in Solaris 10 (Was curious if the movie might be rendered more crisply in Solaris than Windows :) ) but found that .DAT files are not played in Java Media Player.
So I downloaded the Real Player for Solaris 10 x86 (The bin file which is a self executable installer). Now Real Player plays mp3 songs without a problem, just like Java Media Player, but it does not play any movies with a .DAT extension.
I thought may be I need to download a small patch and hence googled a bit, but could not find anything. So googled again to find if there was some work around, but could not come up with anything.
Has someone faced a similar problem? If anyone could help me with this, I would be really thankful.
P.S: I have boasted to my friends how good Solaris 10 is and if I get the .DAT movies working in Solaris 10, they will surely think of getting it installed on their comps cause it pretty much does everything else !!

That application is in the Applications -> Utilities Folder.
Change the popup menu under "Properties for" to Apple logo Built-in Output. And change the Source to Internal Speakers, and format to 44100.0 Hz with the downward pointing triangle next to the Hz rating.

What system and iPhoto version are you running and do you have Qjuicktime Player 7 installed. It would be in the Applications or Applications/Utilities folder.

Did you export the iMovie project to a movie file i.e. .MOV file?
You said you burned the project to a DVD.  A PC will not be able to open an iMovie project.
