Quicktime 7 plays movie but skips frames

Using Tiger and QT 7.1. The movie displays a frame then seems to jump forward. Seems to play 1 frame out of 30. These are fairly large movie files. Could Quicktime need more memory? If so I don't know how to access that.
Thanks.
Bill

I just noticed what hardware Bill Graham1 lists as his Mac--a Power Mac 7300 running Tiger. He has to be using something like XPostFacto to get it to run on this older Mac. In any case, even if this 7300 has a processor board upgrade, it's not designed to handle Quicktime 7 video at a decent speed. I'd be interested to hear Bill's experience with Quicktime 6.5.2, under OS 10.3.x on his 7300--did it play movies at a normal speed? If so, then that would confirm he's seeing the Quicktime 7 bug, which is actually real--check some of the other posts in the Quicktime section from people with G4 Macs that are more than fast enough to play movie files using Quicktime 7, but who are seeing this problem, where other people with the same Mac model aren't, which indicates it's some sort of bug. My Mac, a G4 AGP at 500 mhz, played MPEG-1 movie files just fine, under OS 10.3.x, using Quicktime 6.5.2, but when I installed OS 10.4, which requires Quicktime 7, the same movie files now play for a few seconds, then stop; if I hit the Quicktime Player window's pause button, then press it again, the video starts playing at a normal speed, but only after skipping some frames, and then plays again for only a few seconds. If I keep doing this, the whole video plays, but that's not how it's supposed to work. The same thing happens when you run Quicktime Player 6.5.2 under OS 10.4.x--you can't run the Quicktime 6.5.2 installer under OS 10.4.x, but you can run its Quicktime Player application if you copy it from a Mac that has 6.5.2 installed--but it doesn't help, indicating the problem is something in the Quicktime 7 extensions, or a problem with some OS file(s) that affect Quicktime playback, at least with MPEG-1 files--I haven't tried any MPEG-2 files.
If you play these same MPEG-1 files using VLC Media Player instead of Quicktime Player, they play with no pauses, on these same "slow" Macs. I don't think VLC relies on Quicktime software. This further implicates Quicktime 7 as the cause of the problem.

  • Need help, used to play .mov but won't now, how do i fix this??

I was havin problems with .mov, the screen is all white, but i can hear sound, the videos played before but now they won't and i have no idea how this happened or how to fix this, can someone please help or direct me to someone or somewhere that can??

A white playback area means you're missing the proper video codec.
Use the Movie Inspector window to find out what's used and a Google search to find that codec right your your machine.

  • DVD video/audio rip to FCP but skipped frames, why?

    Dear Pros.
I am having an issue with frame and audio skipping on me through out the clips that I ripped from DVD video. DVD video is created by Panasonic DMR-6070. It is an educational lecture that we create at the university. We use DMR-6070 to master the video. DMR-6070 creates MPEG2 video in 325x480. I am able to rip the video using MPEG Streamclip as 720x480 QuickTime DV/DVCPRO NTSC video/audio with 29.97 FPS.
When I bring the DVD ripped footage to FCP and start to edit, I noticed that every10 seconds or so, video and audio skips. I don’t know why it is doing this. The original DVD video does not have this issue. When I tried to export from DVD, I specified to 29.97 FPS. FCP is set to edit with DVD/NTSC settings with 29.97 FPS. The video should come into FCP without any hitch. But I am stuck…
Also I shot the same footage with DV cam in different angle. I am trying to edit two footages using Multiefootage edit mode. The footages were cued up by IN point. However, videos start to become out of synch after 2 min. of footages past. So I am assuming that some issues with dropped frames.
How do you work with DVD video and bring the footages into FCP? Do you see any dropped frames? Can you Multifootage edit with a mix of video sources?
    Thank you in advance.

There is something very strange about the size of the MPEG2 files you say the recorder produces; the file size you quote is MPEG1 video not MPEG 2. this is the start of your problems I would think. I have a number of Panasonic recorders and they all produce 720x540 in standard mode PAL
I trust you are NOT using the Extended Play mode on the recorder, the 6hr setting?. This will really muck things up if you are.
I get excellent results from video recorded on the Panasonics, taking account there is a quality drop by converting from DVD.
I convert to DVD to Quicktime using DVDxDV, edit in FCP then output to DVD again and never have problems.
Try a test using the free DVDxDV tryout application and see what results you get.
As to dropped frames in editing the DV cam I assume you have the basic configuration for using FCP:
    - you are capturing to external media drives, not the system drive
    - have the correct version of QuickTime for the version of FCP and the OS you have
    - you have the same AV settings for both sets of footage you are trying to edit on the timeline - FCP will not edit different setups in the same timeline

  • Plays movie, but no audio!

So, I bought quicktime pro 7 about a year and a half ago. I know how to transfer the videos from movie to ipod, but when I transfer them to my ipod, it says the movie cannot be played. So, I put transferred movie to mpeg4. It played on the ipod, but there was no audio. What should I do?

Try using Videora or MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos; more information is available in this article.

  • Quicktime plays video but no audio

Trying to play Quicktime videos from Prentice Hall website associated with textbook. Browser has up-to-date Quicktime plug-in and when tested there is video and audio. But when video is played from selected website, there is video but no audio. Tested using Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox but results are the same.

    Jacumba,
Here is the link that the professor provided -
    http://wps.prenhall.com/chet_martin_audiology_11/194/49692/12721280.cw/index.htm l
The instructor tried on the computer in the classroom that she uses and I also tried it on the computer in my office. ON that website are different QuickTIme videos embedded in the different chapters. Clicking on the QuickTime link (box), the QuickTime logo appears, then the image appears but when Play is pressed, the video plays but there's no evidence of audio. The volume control on the QuickTime movie is at maximum and I have the volume on my computer at maximum, but there's no sound whatsoever. LIke I said, I have the latest QuickTime plug-in and when I test the plug-in, I get video and audio.
I'm trying to find out an answer for the professor because she uses the website in her course.
Any suggestions would be most welsom.

  • QuickTime Plays Audio But No Video

For the past few days everytime I play an mpg or mov on my QuickTime Player (7.3), I hear the audio but instead of seeing any video, there's only the native aqua gray screen. This not only happens with downloaded mpgs or movs on the Internet, which
plays fine in whatever browser I'm using, but also with mov files I've made myself with Final Cut Pro.
I've already researched similar problems within this forum from the past few months and I've tried various suggested solutions, like trashing the QuickTime preferences, restarting, repairing permissions, but nothing has changed. I've also gone into QuickTime preferences>advanced>mime settings, checked the "video" box, clicked okay, and restarted, but when I drag a mov file onto the QuickTime icon in my dock, the SAME THING happens, audio without video.
This hasn't affected anything within FCP, but I can't see any of my files in QuickTime. The only thing I did lately was install a third party program to change the look of my iTunes interface, but I completely trashed my iTunes program, all related files, including my music library, and reinstalled them from my backup drive, in case that affected QT.
    Any ideas?

  • Quicktime playing movies off centre

Quicktime is playing my movies off centre!  VERY frustrating!  I've tried altering screen size - no luck.  I've tried exporting to iTunes - encounters an error.  These movies worked fine on PC media player.

I'm using the Quicktime app and my movies are being played (and opened in Quicktime) off centre - titles and the picture is being cut off on the right.
Still trying to determine if you are referring to the QT 7 or QT X display window or the actual content within the window. Have therefore posted an image below:
Does he QT player window look like this? That is is the player window itself playing beyond the edge of the display screen or is the QT player window located in the center of your monitor screen. In the image above, the QT player window has been moved beyond the display limits of the monitor and merely needs to be dragged back into the monitor display area by clicking on the QT player window and dragging to a more centralized viewing position. This is the simplest problem.
Unfortunately there could be other possibilities here:
QT also allows the embed of display values which allow the content to be offset within a defined QT display window. QT normally prevents a users from manually setting negative value here, but I suppose it might be possible to make changes using special utility apps which may or may not result in a "cutoff" of displayed content with the player window located in the center of a screen.
Another possibility is the application of an embedded mask.
Lastly, there the movie and/or PLIST file for the app could be corrupted.
Example of a masked file played in the VLC player which ignores the mask
Same file as played in the QT 7 player with a mask to "chop off" the top and bottom of the display area during playback
As indicated by the samples above, files can be edited (embedded with settings or masks) that are ignored by third-party players but which can affect how a file plays in QT based apps in terms of the display area or when playback starts and/or stops. While I doubt you would forget performing such edits, I mention then as possible ways in which a file could play one way on a PC and differently in QT or differently in different QT players.
I can't open the movies in iTunes and can't export the files.
This normally implies that the files were not encoded with compression formats compatible with iTunes and/or mobile devices. Unfortunately, this contradicts the ability of you files to open and play (albeit off center) in the QT X player under mavericks unless you failed to mention that the files were being automatically converted by the QT X player and, in which case you should save the converted copy of the file for use in iTunes or with mobile devices.
And I have no idea if the media contains embedded display offsets (I don't even know what that means).
The QT 7 Pro keyed app contains track level property settings that allow a user to move graphic content around to different locations within the QT 7 player window. The is handy when creating a "movie within a movie" or "movie within a still image" graphic effect. QT 7 Pro can also scale the video track content independently as well as move the scaled content around the display area. (E.g., I have created movies that play within the display area of a TV set in a still photo or played on a monitor screen of a second movie playing in the background of my clip.) However, based on your comments, I doubt this is the problem here.
I just had these files on my PC and recently brought a mac.  These files were fine on my PC.
It is always helpful to indicate what kind of movies we are talking about here in terms of file container of data compression formats within the file container as the combination of the two may affect how a file plays and/or converts—especially under Mavericks which includes totally new embedded media playback structures within the Mac OS.
Is there another app I should be using?
Since you are dealing with content possibly created on/for PC playback, you may want to try the free VLC player download on you Mac. It employs the FFmpeg codec package which better supports PC media formats.
I've looked through the settings for quicktime and there are no options available for chaining the video dimensions or something like it.
If you are saying the "View" menu playback settings and/or keyboard shortcuts do not work, then either the app or the app's PLIST file is most likely corrupt.

  • Plays songs but skips through them

I know you've tried resetting but have you tried restoring your iPod? (sometimes the terms "resetting" and "restoring" can be confused, though).

  • Quicktime plays video but cannot here the audio

    Hello,
quicktime will play the video fine on my IMAC but I cannot hear the audio. I am running the snow leopard Operating system. Can anyone assist me with this problem? I presume it is likely a codec problem but I am not sure. Please advise.

I dl an avi file and it won't play the audio (just the video) in both Real and QT.
What you need to do depends on your specific goals. If all you want to do is play the file in the QT Player, you would need a supporting MP3 components installed -- possibly Perian if not already installed. On the other hand, if you plan to use iTunes to manage the file, I would convert the AVI file to an iTunes compatible format like MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC so it could be imported to iTunes for viewing in/on iTunes, Front Row, iphone, iPod, TV, iPad (?) etc. I would normally use MPEG Streamclip to do this.

  • Play movie clip on frame

I am using Flash CS4 and i have made some short movie clips. I want one of them to play on frame 24 once and then the next on frame 48 ect. How would i do this?
    Thank you in advance,
    Ben

Your posting could be interpretted at least a couple ways, so I'll try for one of them... Give your movieclips instance names via the Properties panel, and in an actions layer, on the frame you want one to play, add a keyframe and in it add the code: mcName.play();  where mcName is whatever instance name you assign to the movieclip
The preceding assumes you have a stop(); command in the first frame of each movieclip.
If that doesn't agree with the scenario you intend, try explaining the details again.

  • Help - ipod doesn't play songs but skips through them

My ipod suddenly started skipping through songs and that's all it does. It will not play music or video, just skips through it to the next one, and no album art is showing on anything. Does anyone have any advice or help?

Does your iPod do this with every song on it?
How long has this been happening?
Also, try playing the songs, then in the middle of a skipping session, press "pause" on it. Does the album art show then? If that's the case, then simply your iPod bogs up when doing all that skipping. If that's not the case, then the album art hasn't loaded correctly.
As for the skipping through everything, if you reset your iPod (I think that's what it's called, not formatting, or something..). That will refresh it, and may take care of it. You will lose settings and stuff, though.

  • HDV - FCE - Quicktime plays right - squished video on burned DVD

i looked thru the forum a bit and didn't quite find what i was looking for, though it seems there are a number of similar problems.
i've imported HDV video from a canon hv30 into final cut express. no problem. edited the video. no problem. export as quicktime movie. no problem. quicktime plays movie. no problem. create idvd project. no problem. preview dvd in idvd (set idvd to 4:3 because i want it to play on normal tv's). no problem. burn the dvd. PROBLEM.
the theme screen is fine, but the video is squished. no letterbox. i've tried doing this a few times, and the results are the same each time.
i certainly don't know all the crazy quirks of video, but this certainly seems buggy in light of all the similar posts.
any work arounds with HDV and FCE?
    thanks!

    hey there josdaviar,
afaik, there is no way to do this except to create a new sequence that's anamorphic, then place your existing sequence in it, but as i explained a 16:9 video onto a 16:9 DVD will display as letterbox on a 4:3 TV & as 16:9 on a widescreen TV. so i'm not understanding your issue, if making the video(16:9) & DVD(16:9) match & the DVD will play on both types of TVs--as fullscreen 16:9 on a widescreen TV & as letterbox on a 4:3 TV? are you exporting @ "current settings" to maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio? if so, make a 16:9 DVD & check it yourself on both types of TVs. i have a 4:3 TV +DVD player & check all my 16:9 DVDs on it(i have clients who pay me), so far every one has played as letterbox on the 4:3 TV + DVD player rig & as fullscreen 16:9 on my widescreen HDTV + DVD player rig.
the "flag" for playback of the DVD(as fullscreen or letterbox) is in the DVD player's initial set-up/top menu--it may need to be set(depending on the age of the DVD player).
    good luck.
