Quicktime access speeds

Hello,
I noticed that there is a difference in performance when trying to access a Quicktime video via a DFS path versus a direct server path.
For example
When accessing a video via the path \\domain.com\studio\quicktime\video.mov, it takes 15 seconds before the video starts playing.
When accessing the same video via the path \\server\quicktime\video.mov, it takes 7 seconds.
I have tested with Quicktime Player and Quicktime Pro and both software consistently experience the same discrepancy in speed.
I am looking to see if it is possible to fix this ?
An explanation of why this is happening would be appreciated.
8 seconds may seem like a small amount of time, but our company deals with many videos and it all adds up, especially when dealing with larger videos. It has already taken upwards of 5 minutes. However, access via a direct path has always consistently been quicker.
Also note that other application are able to access other files on the fileserver via the DFS path or the direct path in roughly the same amount of time so this is not a DFS issue. Quicktime is the only application that runs more slowly than the rest.

  • How to increase internet access speed of OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia

Is it possible  to increase internet access speed of Mackbook Pro OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia?
    How can i do this?

Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) can tell you, in the Info pane, what speed you are actually connecting at.
Just set the interface to the one you are using (which may show up as en2 or something). Link Staus and speed are shown along with error counts.
If the data rate is very different from what you expected, you may have it manually set to a lower rate.
YouTube files are enormous -- that may be the best it can do.

  • Can someone explain to me "Recommended WAN Access Speed (with services)?

    Looking at this spec sheet:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/routers/3900-series-integrated-services-routers-isr/Routing_Poster.pdf
Why offer GE WAN ports on a 1921 if the recommended WAN access speed is only 15Mbps?  Can someone provide context?  I think I'm misunderstanding the specs.
    Thanks!

Photo sync is only one way, computer to iPhone.
To get pictures from the iPhone to the computer, copy them to the computer as you would with any other device.
Pictures saved from emails or instant messages (if done on the device) are in the camera roll.
Pictures previously synced to the device from a computer are not available to be copied off the device.  They should already be on a computer.

  • OLEDB, data accessing speed

I wrote a program in VB6 which involves frequent database accessing. The database I used previously was MS-Access 2000 and the performance of the application was very good. It takes about 2 seconds to finish a run.
Now I changed my database to Oracle 8.1.17. The application accesses the Oracle database through Microsoft ADO and OLEDB provided by Oracle. However, the performance of the application is greatly reduced. It takes nearly one minute to complete a run.
I think there should be no problem in oracle settings or database indexes, and the problem might be related to either the ADO or OLEDB. I wonder if Oracle can provide the same accessing speed as MS Access to VB applicatoins. I would be very appreciated if anyone could share your experience.

    Hi Otto, thanks for response.
For standalone LCD, i mean that i use the SAP version of LCD but i call it directly from my filesystem outside the sapgui, this allow to save the form on my local pc in different formats (i use this only for test: this form has no reader rights, you can use it in Adobe Professional, while n Reader you can't save the data).
The problem i've exposed above happens when the form is generated (with reader rights) from SAP.
I know Stefan Cameron blog and i used his tutorial  to do this this, but what works for him doesn't for me!!
Than i think this is a SAP problem. I opened a message yesterday, i'm still waiting the response.

  • Shared drive access speed: AEBS vs Mac Mini

Quick question - suppose I share the same external HDD from either a) connected directly to an Airport extreme (previous gen n model) via USB or b) from another networked computer (spicifically a Mac Mini - 2.0 dual core, 2GB RAM, hardwired to AEBS) using USB or FireWire. Will one configuration or the other give faster access speeds from other networked computers?

in my experience, a direct firewire connection is *by far* superior.

  • Increase access speed for users in multiple countries

We have set up a SQL sever database that serves as the back end for an Access front end.
We have users in Australia (NSW, Victoria and SA) and in Batam, Indonesia.
All Australian users have acceptable access speeds, but the users in Batam, Indonesia are experiencing severe slowdowns, even on a clear 12meg duplex connection.
Please advise how we may resolve this so our Indonesian users have the same access speed as our Australian users.

    Hi Nigel,
It is correct that the geo-replication only offers readable secondaries (in the Premium service tiers). If your workload is mostly reads with occasional writes, you can consider having local secondaries for the read queries and perform the writes into
    the central primary DB.
One other thing you could look into is to shard the data, if the application and dataset allows this:
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/sql-database-elastic-scale-get-started/
However if you cannot split up the data and all your sites require constant write access and operate on the same dataset, I believe it comes down to running a single DB in the 'optimal' location.
    Hope that helps,

  • Quicktime playback speed

I am using QT 7.5 and trying to dump movie files from a Sony Handicam to it.
I used to have no problems at all but now when I hit "record" on quicktime, the frames are jerky and slow and not at the same speed as the movie file I have captured on the camera??
    Can someone PLEASE help me?

Besides Share > QuickTime > CD-ROM, what other export settings allow for chapters to be selected in a QT movie? I know that this can't happen if "full quality" is selected.
When using QT to capture video, your frame rate is dependent on both the power of your platform and capture mode being used. (E.g., capturing to H.264/AAC requires a re-compression of data which is very CPU intensive.) For best results, use a dedicated capture application like those built into editing applications or the free Vidi or similar dedicated capture utility. Closing any running applications/Dashboards, turning off your internet connection, and/or changing capture mode may help reduce the problem but will not totally fix such them.

  • Improve QuickTime export speed?

I am wondering how can I improve QuickTime speed when exporting an .avi movie to ipod format.
When I use a regular ipod exporter on a pc ( 1.8Ghz), I takes aprox. the same time with doing it on my MacBook Pro, 2.16 dual-core.
I mean, is QuickTime really optimized to take advantage of the dual-core processor when exporting?
And what can I do to make it export faster?
    Thanks,
    L

Don't use the "Export to iPod" preset.
Use MPEG Streamclip (free) or a dozens other software titles that don't use the preset "two-pass" method to create your .m4v file.

  • Internet Access Speeds - iMac vs PowerBook G4

    Hi Folks,
I'm running an iMac7,1 and a PowerBook G4, both located an equal distance from my wifi hub. Neither of them are spring chickens, however my PowerBook is accessing the internet at at least 3 times faster than the iMac. The iMac has 4 times the memory and a faster processor. What version of OS X is the iMac running?  If per chance it is running Lion at this point, then the 3 GB of RAM is very minimal because Lion is a resource hog and increasing the RAM to the maximum 6 GB that your model version 7.1 iMac can stabley use would help it run much faster.  I own the 7.1 iMac also and while Apple originally said that the Maximum RAM was 4 GB, it later was found by online vendors such as OWC and Crucial that the 7.1 was fully stable with 6 GB of RAM, which is what I have been running for years.  And it certainly sped up the system.  The Powerbook running OS X 10.5.7 apparently, does not need as much RAM for that version of OS.
    Hope this helps

  • Library access speeds

So, I have 3 Apple TV's on my home network.  Streaming netflix works great, renting movies works great, but accessing my Library has turned unbelievably slow.  I've upgraded my Internet to get up to 20 mpbs.  Is it the download speed, upload speed, or neither that is the most important in getting quick access to files in your Library?  Is there a size of Library that starts to degrade performance?

Check if computer and internal/external drives are going to sleep/spinning down as if they take time to wake you may get that spinning wheel, though if the process times out you may just get an empty content list.
If renting movies (I assume in HD with near instant start?) works fine then i don't think you have much of a LAN issue - AppleTV compatible content in iTunes is unlikely to require much higher bandwidth than watching from the internet - one caveat however is that if all devices are on wireless to stream from computer>router>AppleTV takes more LAN bandwidth than internet > router > AppleTV.
In addition say you had files added to itunes but located on network storage/Time capsule, it's even more complex:
Network storage > router > iTunes on computer > router > AppleTV.
Check wi-fi signal strength on all devices  - the weakest link will pull the better performing elements down.
If it is LAN, then try to ditch wi-fi as it can be very hit and miss, prone to interference etc.
If you can't run ethernet cable and don't have a highly complex electrical mains circuit consider mains powerline network adapters which are a great alternative to wi-fi.
I use them for many of my devices including AppleTV's (edited - formatting buggers up layout once I post!) (Need to design one of those tidy diagrams Winston has!)
Look at items by Devolo/Netgear/Belkin etc.

  • Shake Quicktime Changes Speed of Movie

I made a video with me playing drums, bass, and guitar in a band with myself. Obviously timing is extremely important in matching up the sounds to the video here. I had to do some rotoscoping in shake and after rendering the shake project into a quicktime file, the video is significantly slower. The music won't match up with the video now. Does anyone know what caused this?

I've had this problem in shake and I can say that the real issue is the export codec you used from either Shake of FCP. e.g if you edit DVC Pro 1080 on the timeline in final cut and export the clip to shake for editing you have to make sure you use the DVC Pro codec at 1440 by 1080. If you use it at 1920 by 1080, there is a change in the play back speed after export... So you should check the codec you shot with... You should make sure you know the exact frame resolution and codec you shot with...

  • Is there an updated way of setting QuickTime streaming speed for iChat?

I've been using iChat screen share to help a friend.  The first time we tried it, it worked well; the second time, however (same computers), the image of the screen I recieved was suddenly very low resolution (too low for me to see what I'm doing).  It sometimes clears up after around 30-40 seconds, but once a window is moved, etc, the problem reoccurs, making the process tedious to the point that I don't think I'd go through this.  I saw in a previous community tip that changing the streaming speed in Quicktime can resolve this issue; they specified that this must be done through the Quicktime icon in System Preferences, and not through the standard Quicktime app..  that was for OS 10.5.6; on my OS (10.6.8, and the new QT), Quicktime is now missing from the System Preferences panal  : /..  I also saw a user comment on another site saying, "Basically, [the new] QTX lacks the option to pick your codec, frame size, data rate, and so on."  So was QuickTime's streaming speed function lost, and do I really need Quicktime to accomplish better image quality for iChat?  If it can't be fixed, is there a better screen sharing utility I can get that won't have these problems?  Thanks for any help : )..

    Hi,
Back before iChat 4 the Video part of iChat chats was based on the reading the app ttok from the Internet speed it could see.
This speed was directly effected by the then System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab setting.
Basically the Automatic Setting was read a 0 (zero) kbps.
The Fastest Setting of Intranet/LAN also got messed up  (it would not return a figure iChat could use)
For that reason we used to Suggest that people use the 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN setting
This limited Video streaming by any app to 1500kbps both as Upload and Download  (this is fact a rough figure based on using base 10 rather than the true binary based math involved)
At iChat 4 Apple made iChat see the Automatic setting as 384kbps
This should be fast enough for 4 way Video chats as the Host end. (the person that invites the others)
By Snow Leopard (iChat 5) the Quicktime Setting has gone in System Preferences.
The way iChat "reads" the Internet Speed is different and it is not restricted by Quicktime.
The only way to Cap iChat now is the App Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit
Apple state the minimum Internet speed that iChat should have for Screen Sharing is 128kbps
Internet Speeds tends to be based on Binary multiple at lower speeds - 56kbps  is max Dial-up Modem speed
128kbps is obviously twice that. The next speed split is like to be 265kbps
Check that you and your Buddy have at least 128kbps as Upload as well as download.
    http://www.speedtest.net/
Ideally it should be faster as at that speed you can lose between 10 and 20% in the test  and the overheads of running the connection to the ISP
Setting the Bandwidth (in iChat) at 500kbps at both ends can eradicate the variances you can get in slower Internet speeds.
In Snow Leopard Quicktime has become Quicktime X and does have issues playing some Quicktime 7 movies.
This also applies to Lion and Mountian Lion
However there are ways to install the Quicktime 7 Player that will cover the codecs that may not be played.
This info does not apply to iChat though.

  • DB Access Speed improvement

When try accessing and acquiring huge data and speed is too slow, what should I consider in order to improve this poor performance.
There can be a server side improvement and client sidefor example ADO.NET code).
I want to know everything I should consider.

    Hi dy0803,
For a SELECT statement in SQL Server 2012, to improve speed, you may reference the below suggestion.
    Create proper
INDEXs on the columns that after the WHERE,GROUP BY,JOIN ON.
    Using the
Sargable query to take the advantage of INDEXs
Try different approaches and compare the
execution plans to select a most efficient statement.

  • Database access speeds up when priority lowered?

I found very consistent performance problems executing a

went away when we lowered the priority of the thread to 5.
Running on a database that has about 100000 records, with 47 fields

    Hi Mike,
No simply way. Most of the Viewers are for viewing reports with saved data. For them to run your reports on their work stations they too need to install CR Designer.
If you have access to a developer you could write a very simple application so they could refresh the reports. Then all they have to do is deploy the runtime on their PC's, that is free for distribution to internal use only.
There may even be some sample applications you could use but you'll need help from a developer to make it work properly.
    Thank you
