Quicktime Add-In for .avi files

I want to play back (& export into iMovie) a couple of .avi files I've downloaded. Clicking the file, launches Quicktime (by default) which displays a message that says a Quicktime component is missing. Clicking continue takes me to the Quicktime site, but I don't know which of the add-ins I need to download.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks.
Cliff
PS: I have VLC to run the .avi file but cannot export from the application.

A little bird told me that the codec that wants to be a format may soon get its way. The bird was an Apteryx (I think). It may have been a drunken Road Runner covered with Texas road kill.
Maybe then we'll see the end of the .avi file.
The DivX codec will then become its own file extension (.divx) and users on both platforms will know what to use to play the files.
Of course the format will soon die because of advances in MPEG-4 specifications and the introduction of the Blu-ray, HD-DVD or Maxell's "Holographic" format.
I already have more cables coming from the back of my computer and TV to shame a heart patient in a hospital bed.
Stick with standards, or create them as QuickTime and Apple have done. Avoid viewing those that do not use these proven technologies.
Heck. Sometimes avoiding viewing them is too easy.

  • How do I disable Quicktime for being my default player for .avi files?

When I click on a .avi file, quicktime always tells me it's unable to open it because it needs a plugin. So I use VLC media player b/c it's hassle free. When I open an avi file, I select the "always open with" option when I choose VLC. Unfortunately, I have to do that for every single avi file I put on my computer. How do I get Quicktime to stop being my default player for .avi files only? I still prefer it to be my default player, but just not .avi files.

Thanks for the link. Is this perian prefpane all I need to maximize my quicktime experience? Basically, will I never EVER see a "quicktime can't open this..." message again? Can I delete VLC media player now?
Also, what the heck is the point of the Eject button in the top right corner of the keypad. When I tried ejecting the perian "disc" that I got from opening the .dmg, it didn't work. Is that button only good for ejecting actual discs from the cd/dvd rom?

  • Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed

I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks

And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously.

  • My quicktime can't play avi file

HI everyone does someone know why my latest quicktime can't play avi file?

Let me tell you what are you doing wrong...
you just followed the wrong road try this one instead and you will love it.
*1st of all*: Dont pay attention to QuickTime, no matter what movie you want to view
just download and install VLC Media Player and your worries about formats, video codecs, audio codecs, multi zone dvd reproduction will be over in a sec!
just "open as" > VLC Media Player and you will see everything and if you have a subtitle file, just drag it into the movie

    You can also use VLC

It woks very well, can read almost anything, and also lets you do conversions to other formats.

  • Please add support for MXF files created by Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio

We have a Hyperdeck Studio that records DNxHD220 files in a MXF wrapper. Right now it is not possible to import them into Premiere CS5.5.
It would be great if Adobe would add support for those files.

  • How to add support for new file type.

Using the ESDK, I would like to add support for new file type ( a new extension). this new extension will function like any other non visual code editor but will have specific syntax highlighting, code folding and explorer.
I am trying ot figure out if I need to create a new editor or use existing JDeveloper code editor and add support for new file type. Does anyone have a high level outline on how to do this using the ESDK that is specifically targeted at adding new file type support for a text based code editor?
I have looked at the Samples and keep going in multipe directions. It would be cool if there was an example that was how add syntax higlighting for new file type.
    Thank you

Brian, thank you. I looked at this extension and it answered a lot of questions for me. I was going in the right direction but needed a little help and bost of confidence, this is just what I needed. I created the LanguageSupport, LanguageModel, Addin, Node and TextDocument that are specific to the new file type. I was getting hung up on how to hook this into the JDevelpoer editor. I keep thinking I have to create a custom editor but it looks like I don't have to and it looks like I can associate this file support with the editor framwork, for version 10.1.3.2, with the following in the Addin Initilize() method.
    Recognizer.mapExtensionToClass(MY_EXTENSION, MyNode.class);
    CodeEditor.registerNodeType(MyNode.class, MY_EXTENSION);
    LanguageModule.registerModuleForFileType(new MyLanguageModule(), MY_EXTENSION);
I have done this but still not able to recognize the new file type.
At this point, I just want to be able to recognize the new file and display it's associated icon or display a messare to the message log. I put a System.out.println("test") in the Initilize() method of my addin. then I registered MyAddin in the extension.xml. JDeveloper sees this new extension and it is loaded but I have not been able to show the test message or display the new icon when I open the new file type.

  • IOS Newsstand app, add support for .folio files

    Hello!
We have an iOS Newsstand app to provide our issues to our clients, and we use a PDF reader.
We would like to add support for .folio files in the app, by using a folio reader in our app.
Searching around, I've only found the specifications for the .folio files and the Adobe Content Viewer app.
Is it possible to have some more specific information on how we can make something like the Adobe Content Viewer app that we can integrate in our app?
For example how we would parse the xml files, what views/controls to use (eg. UIWebview?) etc.
    Thank you very much!

    Neil let clear something:
    - After the .folio specification became public (with license off course) the "This really isn't possible to do" is not truth.
I believe that what people need to know is that: "Are we allowed to build a viewer?" / "Does Adobe allow programmers to give it a go?"
Before March this wasn't allowed but since the spec became public we all hope (and I believe Adobe too) that this format will have an industry standard acceptance - like the PDF. In this case many people will try to create  viewers, software, builders etc.
The DPS is a great platform but VERY EXPENSIVE. Companies around the world have developed and are in a position to develop great experiences and great apps. Sharing the .folio is big and this is what we need to clear - and not the number of staff working on the DPS Viewer.
    Thank you in advanced.

  • No sound for AVI files with Quicktime

I know this is a well discussed topic, but I can't seem to fix this problem.
I upgraded to Quicktime 7.5 and quickly found that I cannot get audio/sound out of my AVI files (most are short clips taken with my Casio Exlim Digital Camera). I tried installing Perian, but that didn't work. I tried reinstalling QT, and that didn't work. I tried repairing disk permissions and that didn't work. Finally, I thought perhaps I had a bad AppleIntermediateCodec file. I downloaded version 1.0.1 from Apple, but it won't let me load it - acts like its an update to an existing file, but the file is not on my system. Here is the contents of my Library/Componets folder:
    A52Codec.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    AudioCodecs.component
    file.temp

I am the admin on the system, but I have two other accounts for my sons. Can anyone out there give me a clue as to what I should do next? Thanks.
    DadioCruton

I am having the same problem. But it's even weirder. Any .avi file I created using my Flip Ultra camera will play with sound. One or two .avi movies I've d/l'd from the 'net will also play with sound. The remainder will not play with sound on QT (7.5). I have VLC, Real and DivX Player loaded, and all .avi files play on those players with sound, no problem.
Now, my Library/Components folder is empty. My Library/QuickTime folder has the following:
    3ivxVideoCodec.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    AC3MovieImport.component
    CanonMJPEGAVI.component
    CanonText.component
    Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component

I followed the instructions on this page, but it still isn't working:

  • No Thumbnails for AVI files in organizer

My AVI Video clips are not showing thumbnails in the PSE 11 Orgazizer.
Here is what I have observed as I have been troubleshooting this:
    The files are MJPEG.
When I double click on it in the organizer window, I get audio, but no video.
If I open the file for edit in Premier Elements, the video thumbnail shows up in project assests and the video correctly plays in the Premier Elements editor.
If I double click on the files in Windows Explorer they open up in Quicktime Version 7.
The thumbnails for the files show in up windows explorer when I browse to the folder they are in.
I selected a file in PSE, chose 'Export to New File" and the file that I created by doing that showed a generic Quicktime icon without the thumbnail in windows explorer. When I double click on that file it correctly plays in Quicktime.
Selecting "Update Thumbnail" has no effect.
Thumnails are corrctly showing for .mov, .mpg and .mp4 file types.
Any one have any ideas what is going on with the organizer that might be causing this beavior or is this a know limitation of PSE Organizer. What is the point of having the organizer supporting video If I can't see the video without opening it in the Premier Elements Editor?
I am providing the "Systems Info" if that helps anyone.

I do not use Organizer, but instead Adobe Bridge (included with some other Adobe programs, like Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro), or ThumbsPlus (Cerious Software), and find that some AV formats/CODEC's just do not display thumbnails. I have had that issue with some, like MPEG-1 files, some WMV files, almost anything with DivX, or Xvid.
I have not used any MJPEG files, so cannot comment on them, but have helped others Import and edit those (never tried to work with any in Organizer, Bridge or ThumbsPlus), and in those cases, it usually boiled down to having the exact MJPEG CODEC installed. As each camera mfgr. seems intent on tweaking the MJPEG CODEC, it is normally possible to Import and edit, if THAT particular MJPEG CODEC is installed, and usually from the camera's utiltiy disc. Other times, the generic Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC's have worked - though that seems to be less often, as Nikon, Panasonic, and others, keep tweaking.
As for the display of any problem AV files, it is usually an inability of the organizing utility to find a proper display, though in some cases, there IS a display, but the first Frame of the AV file is black, with a Dip-to-Black (in this case basically a Fade-in) Transition.
Good luck, and I wish that I had a fail-safe way to always display a thumbnail for ALL AV files, and even better, the ability to set the Poster Frame to what I wanted. So far, no organizer utility, that I have seen, can display thumbs for ALL AV formats - some will handle some AV formats/CODEC's, that others will not, but none has been perfect.

  • Codec for .avi files

Hey; this may be an easy or confusing question, unfortunately I don't have alot of time on my hands lately, but i'm looking to view an .avi file and quicktime says i need a codec to view it; i click the link, and theres several codecs, some free, some not, any idea what codec i need to view .avi files, is it free, certain site? thnx, [email protected]

Microsoft, the inventor of the Audio Video Interleave format, no longer supports any of its uses.
They write proprietary codecs for all of their software including most video formats.
They've written their own version of codecs for the MPEG-4 format which also don't conform to the industry standards.
AVI is a "bucket". You can fill a bucket with water, dirt or strawberries. But it's still just a bucket.
Shame on Microsoft for even using the phrase AVI in any of its software.
Apple invented the .mov container and still supports its use. It is also just a bucket as is its .mp4 file extension.
At least .dv still means something that users can understand. And DivX is a bucket that wants to be a file extension. At least they know the difference.

  • Encode Video Files not working for avi files

    Hi,
I've been trying to convert some .avi files to apple format using Lion's native 'Encode video files' function however keep getting a 'avconvert: source file not found for source file://fileparthhere avconvert: failed to create an export session. Check setup
I can't work out why as this has worked before in Lion and works fine for other video formats. The only thing I've done is remove Final Cut Express HD and can't add it again as I don't own it anymore
Suggestions? Is there a encoder to make this work or should it work anyway?
    Thanks

If you click Yes the project file will be updated when you save it. That has nothing to do with the media.
Are the Lesson and Media folders still in the Book Files folder (or whatever it's called)?
Select one of the clips in the browser and use Edit>Item Properties. One of the first lines is Source. That gives you the file path for where your media is supposed to be located. What does it say? If nothing is there, use the File>Reconnect function and point the application to where the media is located.

  • How do I get quicktime 10 to play avi files

Bought a macbook pro a few months back, and it doesn't seem to play avi files. How can I fix this.

Install Perian. If that doesn't work, you probably can't play those specific AVIs on a Mac.
Neither the QuickTime Player nor MPEG Streamclip can convert a file that it can't play.

  • Quicktime Pro needed for .AVI?

Is Quicktime Pro necessary to view .AVI videos? I'm troubleshooting my dad's Intel iMac (Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz, running Leopard) and he only gets audio when playing back .avi files from a flash camcorder. I have an older G5 with Quicktime Pro and can play the videos with no problem.

I have an older G5 with Quicktime Pro and can play the videos with no problem.
Do you both have the Perian component package installed? AVI, like MOV, are just file container that may hold any of dozens of audio and video compression formats in hundreds of combinations with thousands of setting permutations. Not all compression formats are supported but as you indicate the file plays on your machine but not your father's, the most likely explanation would be a difference in the component configuration between the two machines -- i.e., either his is missing a required component or there is a conflict/inability to access the required component properly. You can troubleshoot the problem by either checking the Inspector window to see which video codec is causing the problem or simply comparing your component configuration with his to see what, if anything, is missing.

  • JMF does not play sound for .avi file and no video for .mov file

    Hi,
I am trying to use JMStudio to transmit media files from one computer to another.
However, when I try to transmit .mov file it only plays audio no video is displayed on other computer.
And when I transmit .avi file I can see the Video on other machine but it does not
    play any sound.
I tried using capture devices like - webcam and mic and they work perfectly fine.
Can anyone please tell me the solution for this.
    Thank you in advance.

I discovered the same problem too..
I think it is a general Format problem.
When i analyzed the tracks in my .avi and .mov files before rtp streaming with jmf, I found each media containing just 1 track..
This track was a video track, no audio at all.
Other formats I tried, like .mpg, revealed both audio and video tracks, and performed perfectly.
I'm still on more research.. will get the solution to you if u don't find one before I'm done..
