Quicktime and Audigy Series Audio Woes

Recently, a growing number of people over at the Ambrosia Software webboard have noticed problems when running Escape Velocity Nova on their PCs. EV Nova uses Quicktime for much of its sound and images, as the game was originally developed for the Macintosh.
The problem we have is specifically related to the game's theme music, which is stored as an MP3 file and played through Quicktime. When running Quicktime 7.1 on a system with a Creative Labs Audigy series sound card, the title music will exhibit a number of anomalies: Playing at odd rates, stuttering, crackling, etc.
This problem does not occur with Quicktime 7.0.3 installed.
Furthermore, I have also noticed that the Halo 3 announcement video, which uses the AAC Audio codec, also has the same problems under the same scenario. In this case, the audio is still problematic under 7.0.3.
In all cases, none of these problems occur with any other sound device that I know of.
My question is, what is going on that is causing these problems? More importantly, how can we fix it, or will Apple and/or Creative have to update their software?
For that matter, is there anywhere that we can still download Quicktime 7.0.3 or 7.0.4?

This problem was solved for Audigy series sound cards with a recent Creative driver update. The Live! series cards haven't received an update yet, so the issue remains for them.

Audio and video playback works fine with CDs, DVDs, etc.
AVI movies downloaded with Torrent play excellent video but no audio. When the movie starts I am informed that a Quicktime component is missing and I am directed to a website that offers many 3rd quicktime components. I have installed all of the free plugins. No go.
Websites show the quicktime logo dimmed with a "?" mark in the center. I have downloaded and installed all of the 3rd party Quicktime plugins that I can find.
I have also changed Safari and Quicktime player to open with Rosetta (as suggested by Shockwave). No joy.
    HELP!

Open one of the "no sound" files in QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info (Window menu) and note the audio codec used in the file.
Do a Google search for "codec name" +Mac and find a version compatible with your OS and computer model.

  • Audio latency problem with VST, SONAR and Audigy 4 PRO

    Hello all,
I have a slight problem with audio performance on my computer and I can't isolate what is wrong. I am using Cakewalk SONAR 4 studio edition, and a recently purchased Audigy 4 Pro soundcard. ( I know it's not quite professional grade, but it works well for me) I recently bought some string instruments from the Vienna Symphonic Library. So far, I love the sound of these "virtual instruments" if you will. The problem comes when I try to record them. I get stuttering and dropouts when I try to record the track in Sonar. I've tried the WDM drivers in 16 and 24 bit modes and the ASIO drivers (which apparently only support 16 bit!?) I know Creative has mentioned that these cards can record easily at 24/96 which is what I'd like if possible. Vienna instruments come in a 24 bit format. Is there something I'm doing wrong or do I need to seriously consider a different soundcard? I use Sonar to bring in the Vienna instruments as a VST. I also apply a reverb on it. When I just play this stuff on my MIDI keyboard, it all sounds great and keeps up. The moment I go to record though, I get dropouts after about 15 seconds or so. Also, is there no way to get ASIO 24 bit support for creative's consumer level cards? I'd be happy with the WDM's personally if those would work. I've looked into the KX project as well but haven't had a chance to try their drivers yet. On a different note, what are the significant differences between ASIO and WDM if any at all? (aside from supported bit rates) My current computer setup is quite powerful and I don't use much CPU power at all so I don't think it's my setup. Intel E6700 (2.67Ghz) Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR2-800, 320GB Seagate SATA in RAID 1, Nvidia 7600GT, and Creative Audigy 4 Pro. Any help, or insight would be greatly appreciated!
    Matthew

Audigy 4 Pro should support 24-bit/96 kHz w/ ASIO --> have you selected those I/O drivers in Sonar audio settings (Options-Audio-Drivers -tab). ! You need to unselect all I/O drivers first to get those 24/96 drivers selectable)?
Dropouts comes from various sources. Have you checked if the read/write caching is set properly (Sonar, try different settings)?
Stuttering may come from shared IRQ/resources and PCI Latency settings.
If your graphics card is not PCIe then, make this registry tweak
Run regedit and search the key named as DisableProgPCILatency
    - set all 'DisableProgPCILatency' key values to 1 (HEX or DEC) (1 = disabled, 0 = enabled)
    - boot to BIOS settings and find the "PCI latency timer" option --> set its value to 32 or 64 (this is global PCI latency setting)
    - reboot
and check the IRQ situation. If there are IRQ shares between Audigy and other devices/controllers, try to get those fixed by disabling unneeded controllers/devices or by moving the Audigy into another PCI slot (PCI slots #3 and #4 are normally not shared).
    Couple meaninful differences between WDM/KS and ASIO are;
    - you can't get latency lower than 10 ms w/ WDM/KS (well, you can in Sonar by manually editing those buffer values but, the result is not good when you go under 10 ms buffer values (buffersize / samplerate * 1000 = latency in ms --> 512/96000*1000=5.33ms)
    and
    - you can record from one stereo (you can split this to two mono) source at a time w/ WDM (recording source is set in CT Surround Mixer (or windows recording controls))
    - ASIO supports (Audigy serie) locked 'resolutions' only - 16/48 or 24/96
Also, tweak your system for music - http://www.musicxp.net/

  • Export QuickTime file with new audio and maintain the file size and quality as the original.

I shot some footage for a client yesterday and ran into an issue. To make a long story short I have QuickTime mov files shot with my Panasonic GH4 that have a buzzing sound in the audio track. I have clean audio from a recorder that can be sync'd. Is there a way for me to do this for the client and deliver them as the same QuickTime file but with the clean audio and keep the file size close to the original and not have quality loss in the image?
If so I will probably put all of the spanned clips together from each interview and sync the audio before delivery. I am just not sure which codec will give the client the same quality footage compared to the originals and not have a massive difference in the overall file size. They did request that they be Quicktime MOV files though so that is a must.
I don't see this as an option in the codecs in the export settings in PP, but is there a way to export as ProRes or another MAC native codec that will save them from having to convert it on their end? I am on a PC with Adobe CS5.5 so I am not too familiar with MACs, but from what I understand they would need to convert the files if I sent them straight out of the camera.
I found some related search results for this but they pertained to "Best quality" for export. I am not sure how the varying options work but I don't want to create files that are considerably larger, just not less quality.
If anyone has experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cole

Here's the workflow: I imported the video footage into iMovie '08 and did my edits. Then I exported it (share) to my desktop with compression set @ 740 X 480. Then I used QuickTime Pro to fix the audio track. The file plays perfectly with both audio tracks working. It's a QuickTime file (.mov).
I hope this jars any replies as to why the file when uploaded to my iWeb gallery drops the second audio track.
    Hmm,
    Jack

  • I am trying to play an mp4 in quicktime and the video and audio does not sync. Any tips?

I am trying to play an mp4 in quicktime and the video and audio does not sync. Any tips? This is not hack/ripped video but a legit home movie.

In this case, it looks like Quicktime wasn't very efficient in managing memory, leading to a slowdown in playback. If QT has a lag and VLC doesn't, that's more evidence.
I couldn't say why your friend's windows computer plays the media fine, while your Mac doesn't. The only thing I could suggest is to disable QT streaming video - which has been known to slow down performance.

  • When recording a video using quicktime and my built in camera (isight) how come the program wont let me use my audio interface rather than the built in mike?

when recording a video using quicktime and my built in camera (isight) how come the program wont let me use my audio interface rather than the built in mike?
The basic answer is that Apple has not programmed the capture routine with this capability. As such, you can always send QT feedback requesting this feature be added as a future enhancement.

Does this driver improve sound quality or performance Are there any tweaks ?
No, this driver does not improve sound quality nor increase performance.
    No, there are no tweaks.
If someone states that its driver improves sound quality and performance, you are being fooled, cheated.
It is even worse that the so called tweaks come from a person who is not EVEN technically acknowledged, does NOT know anything about Windows internals, software engineering and sound fidelity that all audiophiles always look for.
If you "feel" the sound better, that is the infamous placebo effect and there is no real proof that any tweaks work.
In fact, I have yet to see a driver that states in its release notes that it improves sound quality.
I've disassembled about every single .SYS driver, .DLL libraries and .EXE executables and found nothing.
There are some undocumented registry values, but nothing related to sound quality or performance.
Would the so called tweaks even exist, they would be in my Support Packs, you can bet that.
    Fixes and improvements:
    - Fixed Audigy 5/RX support.
    - Readded "EndPoint Utility" to enable the use of other digital devices to output Dolby Digital Live encoded audio.

    - Added instructions on how to install the Gameport.
    - Fixed missing speaker settings strings on Windows XP when DDL is enabled.
    - Improved driver installation, less confirmation prompts.
    - Improved setup procedure and scripts.
    - Removed Encode switcher for now, only DDL is available.
    - Installation now customizable, select what you want to install.
    - New integrated Post Driver Install Helper tweaks the driver without tampering certificate.
    - CMSS2 is now available.

    - Dolby Digital Live now works on Windows 8.1 (update 1). Creative Audio Service was not being installed on that OS.
    - Special FX, Advanced EQ, Studio and Custom presets now available on Windows Vista or later.
    - Audio Console does not crash anymore on non-English localized installs. Localized resources for Online Karaoke tab were missing; added mostly localized Korean and Chinese (Traditional) resources.
    - Online Karaoke page is available for all Audigy cards on Windows Vista or later; this is NOT a new feature, but an easier way to configure the Microphone.
    - EAX Settings for Windows Vista or later includes EAX Studio, a fancy version of EAX Control Panel, no changes in functionality, except the Test button now works.
    - Added fully localized Korean and Chinese (Traditional) resources for EAX Studio, which were missing.
Undocumented fixes by Creative (not listed in the release notes):
    - Headphone mode now sticks and does not revert automatically to Speakers mode on Windows Vista or later.

    Release Notes:
IMPORTANT: Driver uninstall on Windows Vista or later
The included driver for Windows Vista or later has a bug that causes a stop (blue screen) error when unloaded by disabling the Audigy or uninstalling the driver.
To workaround this issue, run the KillDrv.exe utility included and restart when asked to do so. Proceed normally and uninstall all the software or only the driver.
If you have previously installed the Audigy 5/RX driver, you MUST run this utility.
As the KillDrv verify the driver version installed, running it won't do any harm, even if the driver version is not affected.
HOW TO INSTALL THE GAMEPORT DRIVER
You can find a Gameport\ReadMe.htm file in the folder where you unpacked the Support Pack.
Just follow the steps shown in the screenshots.

There is no DirectSound hardware acceleration on Windows XP 64-bit (x64) with 4GB RAM or more
The Audigy driver does not support 64-bit addressing, disabling the DirectSound hardware acceleration and causing multichannel sound to be played only in the stereo channels (front left/right).
    Workarounds:
    - install the 32-bit (x86) version of Windows XP.
    - limit to less than 4GB the amount of RAM available to Windows.
    - enable the "Memory Hole" setting in the BIOS Setup, if your motherboard supports it.
    - install and use Creative ALchemy to convert the DirectSound API calls into OpenAL, which is not affected by this issue.
Karaoke effects make the audio play in mono
You can avoid this issue by using EAX Console to enable Karaoke effects. Audio Console is affected by the issue.
    Optionally, follow the steps below.
Open EAX Settings, select a Karaoke effect, then click the Edit button.
Click on the Source (Wave) tab and change the Original sound to 100% and Pitch Shift to 0%. Click the Save environment button.
Repeat the steps for all Karaoke effects.
These changes will be valid only for the current speaker configuration. If desired, repeat the same process for each speaker configuration.
    MediaSource DVD-Audio Player system requirements

Select "SPDIF Out (Creative SB Audigy (WDM))" as the output device of your player and then configure the AC3/DTS filter to send the stream through SPDIF.
When you restart your computer, the Tone settings (Bass and Treble) are not applied.
Just readjust one of the controls one time per boot.
Equalizer and EAX effects are not available when using OpenAL or ALchemy
Only Tone (Bass and Treble) and CMSS 3D (CMSS, CMSS2 and Stereo Surround) features are available.
There is no sound in games with OpenAL support
Disable Advanced EQ and Special FX by selecting "No effect" before running the game or program.
Equalizer settings are not applied after using OpenAL or ALchemy
After you run a game with OpenAL support or using Creative ALchemy, the Equalizer settings are applied.
Just run Equalizer and the saved setting is loaded automatically.
Tone settings are lost when speaker configuration is changed
Bass and treble settings reset to their default values when speaker configuration is changed.

Unfortunately I don't have a sample card to test personally and don't know anyone with an Audigy 5/RX.
    Anyway, I have a suggestion.
Run EndPtUtl.exe found in the Audio Console installation folder.
If the issue still persists, try to use the Digital Output (Coaxial/Optical) of another device, provided that you have any on your computer.
EndPtUtl.exe enables the use of any device for outputting encoded audio.

    Karaoke Player
You can use hardware or software-based Microphone effects.
If you select an effect in the Karaoke Player itself, it will be software-based and you might experience delays or increased CPU utilization.
If you enable the Karaoke effect in the EAX Console, it will be hardware-based (using the Audigy DSP) with no delay and not relying in the system's CPU. Highly recommended.
I did not make any extensive tests, so please try the software-based Microphone effects and share your experiences.

Does this driver improve sound quality or performance? Are there any tweaks?
No, this driver does not improve sound quality nor increase performance.
    No, there are no tweaks.
If someone states that its driver improves sound quality and performance, you are being fooled, cheated.
It is even worse that the so called tweaks come from a person who is not EVEN technically acknowledged, does NOT know anything about Windows internals, software engineering and?sound?fidelity that all audiophiles always look for.

  • What about the vista drivers for the audigy seri

now that the xifi vista drivers are out, when can we expect the (non-beta) vista drivers for the audigy series?

Actually, you can use the X-Fi-Drivers for the A2ZS. Simply unpack the install-file (e.g. with WinRAR) and run the setup.exe in the "Drivers"-folder. The Audio-Console will be installed too, you'll find it in your "windows/system32"-folder by the name "CtPanel.exe". I use the x64-bit version of Windows Vista, so the AudioConsole for this version couldn't see the installed Audigy-driver for some reason. After I've copied the CtPanel.exe from "yourunpackedinstallfolder/Drivers/wdm/common/i386" to the System32-folder, the Console worked as it should.Because the Console has not the best variety of the options, I've also tried to install the creative-programms from my CD. I could install the "Speaker-Settings"-tool, and it works fine. But the Surround-Mixer seems not to work under Vista, mooving the sliders has no affects on the real volume. I hope, Creative will release the good-working Software-Suite for Windows Vista, I really don't want to argue with the Audio-Console.Message Edited by theLost on 03-08-2007:28 AM

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

  • Importing .mov or .mpg and not getting audio in FCP

I have both an Mpeg (as well as an .mov ) file that play in QuickTime Player beautifully with audio. When I import it into FCP I only get the video. This has been happening with many files that clients are bringing in and have not figured out a way to get the audio track into Final Cut. Any suggestions? Why will it accept the video, but not the audio? Thank you for your assistance in advance!!
    BR

    Hi,
Mpeg is not an editing format.
You need to demux video and audio and convert the original Mpeg in a FCP friendly format like DV or QT.
Your solution is likely MPEGstreamclip. Here it is:

  • Final Cut, Quicktime, and Pro Tools conflicts

    Hi there,
I'm working on a "situation" I recently encountered, and wonder if anybody else has had this problem.
I'm trying to upgrade Pro Tools LE to version 6.9.2 with the install discs that were sent to me from Digidesign, and it's wreaking havoc with Final Cut Pro and Quicktime.
Initially when I installed the upgrade, I was running OSX 10.4.2, FCP 5.0.3 and QT 7.0.2. The Pro Tools upgrade worked fine, as did FCP when I launched it, but Quicktime wouldn't launch- spinning beachball forevermore.
So after doing all the basics- trashing pref's and render files, repairing permissions, etc.- and finding QT still wouldn't work, I tried upgrading to QT 7.0.3.
Once I did that, QT still wouldn't work, and Final Cut Pro would no longer launch. It just hung on the application startup screen, at no particular point each time.
I then upgraded to FCP 5.0.4, and as well OS 10.4.3. No luck. I installed the Pro Application Support updates 2005-02 1.0, and 3.1, and still no luck.
Since there is not yet a downgrade from QT 7.0.3 to 7.0.2, I ran the 7.0.2 to 7.0.1 installer, and downgraded to QT 7.0.1. QT still wouldn't launch, and FCP still hung on launch but this time it hung at the point where it was loading audio filters.
I tried removing the audio filters from their folders to see if it would launch then, but that didn't work. At this point, the only thing I could think to do was to uninstall Pro Tools altogether (safe uninstall, not clean uninstall) and this is what finally brought Quicktime and Final Cut back to life. Great, because I use FCP and QT everday, but I no longer have the use of Pro Tools.
Throughout this process I made sure to diligenty repair permissions, trash prefs, and restart whenever I made a change.
So I'm not sure at this point how to get Pro Tools LE 6.9.2, Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, and Quicktime (any version above 7.0) to work harmoniously, and I'm unable to spare any more troubleshooting time for a week or so because there are of course, projects due.
Has anybody else encountered these oddities?
    Thanks a lot,
    Joni

    Hi, Joni C
    I'm Bump,
I'm having the same trouble, I have FCP I'm running it on a G5 power Mac dual 2.5 ghz with 2.5 gb of memory, my os is 10.4.4. I also have Quicktime pro 7.0.3 and I have Pro Tools LE 7.0, every time I try to use FCP it starts and about five sec. later it shuts back down. I also have a Universal Audio UAD pci card that runs audio plugins and I also have fxpansion program it converts my vst & Au plugins to rtas for pro tools le. IBefore I installed FCP I wiped my hard drive and re installed a fresh version of tiger 10.4 and then I installed FCP studio, then Pro Tools, then all plugin and kept checking to make sure every thing was working correctly and then the U audio stuff with the Vst to rtas wrapper and it all was working fine. I even did the full final cut tutorial still worked fine. Yesterday out of no where final cut just stop working and still all the other programs work fine like dvd studios, soundtrack, motion, pro tools. If you can shead any light on this I would be very greatful

  • WIndows 7 and Audigy

WIndows 7 and AudigyX I can't seem to be able to find an answer to my problem. I seem to somehow have several different settings on my computer for my Audigy 2 sound card. When I boot the computer it seems to grab whichever setting it wants. In the Control Panel>Sound it might say 4-Creative SB Audigy one day and 7-Creative SB Audigy the next. There are a handfull of other settings with different numbers. When I check the drivers sometimes it lists the 2009 driver and sometimes it lists the 2006 driver. Sometimes it even appears to be downloading a new driver from the internet.
In any event, invariably I have to reset my TONE and LEVELS settings.
Does anybody know if this is a Windows issue or a Creative issue? Is there a settings file that can be edited or deleted? Registry hack?
