Quicktime and flv files

I have just bought quicktime pro because research suggested it would open a flv file and convert it. Having gone through a painful process of having to redownload and reinstall various add ons it is still not working only opening the first few seconds of the file. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Quicktime X is a great little piece of software. However, Quicktime X is very finicky on which codec/file format it can decode/play.
Luckily, there are DOZENS of alternative video/media players and extensions available for the Mac. Some of them are even FREE. Some of the better FREE ones include...
PERIAN (quicktime extension)
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22923/perian
QUICKTIME 7.6.6
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
VLC Media Player
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5758/vlc-media-player
NICEPLAYER
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15136/niceplayer
... And if none of those work, there is a possibility that, that video file may be corrupted.

  • Uploaded swf and flv files - right ?

    Hi all -
    Just getting to grips with flash movies, however not 100%
    i've got it right as yet ! Could someone with experience in flash
    movies confirm the files to upload are the swf and flv files to our
    server ? Everything appears OK when viewing the movies - take a
    quick look here www.sofabedgallery.co.uk/cosmosofa.php however I'm
    just a little concerned of the size of the flv file at a couple of
    mb. Is this the correct file to upload or should I try to upload
    the fla smaller file?
    Many thanks,
    Chris.

    Hi ,
    You can publish your project as MP4 with Cp6. For that --
    Do -- File-- Publish-- Media--- (Choose Dropdown) MP4 and (adjust settings, if you like) Hit publish.
    You can use the Adobe Media Encoder to convert the Video into FLV format.
    Also, you can use the SWF option on Publish Screen to publish the project as a Flash File.
    Thanks!

  • QuickTime Pro & FLV files ? How to load? How to convert ?

    OK, I finally got my QuickTime Pro moved to my new laptop But...
    It't won't load FLV files...
    Questions:
    1 - Searched & found about Perian but I think it only works on Mac's... true?
    2 - How can i get Quick Time Pro to work with FLV and other video formats on my PC? I want to use it to convert various formats.
    Thanks for any help.

    Question 1, Perian is for Mac's. Question 2, QT does not work with FLV files, you'll have to use->http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/flv-player/

  • Controller for .swf and .flv files is disappearing

    When I place an .swf or .flv file in Dreamweaver, the controller, which I created in Flash, disappears when previewed in Safari. Do I forget about creating a controller in Flash before exporting to the site directory in Dreamweaver and create it in Dreamweaver instead? Can someone either tell me in simple terms how to do this, or direct me to a tutorial?  Many thanks.

    If you put the page, the .flv file, the .swf files, and the Scripts folder online, we should be able to help. Otherwise, all we can do is make wild guesses as to what you've done.
    BTW, the most common mistake is forgetting to upload the Scripts folder if this is what I think it is.

  • CC and FLV files

    Hi -
    Help please - I have tried a bunch pf workarounds and nothing
    seems to work.....I am doing a soft skill course in captiavte. I am
    importing flv files that contain avatars, video and audio. Well,
    since the audio is embedded in the flv file - I am obviously having
    a problem with adding cc. Any workarounds?

    quote:
    I am obviously having a problem with adding cc. Any
    workarounds?
    Nope, not really. All you can do is approximate it,
    and it may be difficult to get timing right (or not).
    The first issue you will face is that Captivate "grays out"
    the CC button if there is no audio on the slide. The workaround for
    that is to create a tiny audio file that contains an inaudible
    waveform. You won't be able to hear it, but it will fool Captivate
    into accepting your closed captioning.
    As to the timing issues with having your closed captioning
    and the FLV audio synchronized, that is going to have to be a trial
    and error process. Best of luck to you!! Larry

  • SWF and FLV file  sizes

    Hello,
    I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file. Both
    files are the same size. So, it seems that it doesn't matter,
    whether you import an flv file or an swf file, to keep your file
    size small. Is this correct ?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    > I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file.
    Both files are
    > the
    > same size.
    That's just a coincidence.
    There is different baggage / overheads with FLV vs SWF. So
    you will usually
    get some differences .. sometimes SWF smaller, other times
    FLV. However,
    the actual video payload is the same in both, and the audio
    is similar too,
    and they are the bulk of the file size. So there shouldn't be
    a huge
    difference in file size between SWF an FLV.

  • UI Loaders and flv files

    Hiya,
    I loaded a flv into a uiloader. I have 4 buttons which load different projects in. A quiz, an animation and a video. Works great apart from when you click the buttons either the flv sound remains or if you click the flv button I have multiple instances of the audio.
    Yelp and help
    The main file AS3 is
    quiz_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, play_quiz);
    function play_quiz(event:MouseEvent):void
    windowLoader.source="HappiQuiz.swf";
    anim_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, playanim);

    vid_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, playvid);
    function playvid(event:MouseEvent):void
    windowLoader.source="indianMan.swf";
    and the external flv file as3
    is
    import fl.video.*;
    vidplayer.source="IndianPole.FLV";
    vidplayer.addASCuePoint(30,"BuyCD");
    vidplayer.addEventListener(MetadataEvent.CUE_POINT,

  • Some of my .MOV and .FLV files are missing audio

    I have not touched these files, and yet some of them no longer play audio. Some .MOV files do work and same with .FLV. Why would just a few files be affected and not all of them?
    What can I do to restore the audio?
    Thanks.

    The weird thing is that the audio once worked, so something in my settings have changed.
    Over the years, QT support for MP3 audio seems to have ebbed and flowed with the times. I believe the latest upgrade(s) no longer contain internal QT support and may even ignore on of my older QT MP3 installed components. On the other hand, I believe Perian component package contains support for both the FLV file container and the MP3 VRB audio. Haven't really run any recent tests to see which components are doing what for specific files. I.e., I usually wait and do that if/when a conflict develops. (The old "If it's not broke, don't fix it!" philosophy.) In any event, mine are still working so this has not been an issue for me.

  • Quicktime and mono files...

    Why can't QuickTime play mono files? From the Finder or as an open file.
    And how do I go about getting QuickTime to play mono files? Perhaps some setting has been altered that I'm not aware of.

    I previously posted a fix that didn't work out but if someone is still trying to figure this out I made a discovery today. My mail app would no longer play my voice mail wave files from inside the actual emails. When I played through the internal speaker i heard it fine but through my sound card nothing. I had noticed that the files were mono and if I opened them in quicktime and reassigned the mono channel to right or left I could hear it but I didn't know how to change the way quicktime would rout mono files by default. Today I had some time to kill so I experimented. I found that on my system with my sound card the solution was to go to the speaker configuration setting in the audio devices panel of the audio midi setup window. There I went to the multi channel setting and switched it from 5.1 surround to stereo. Perfect sound from my mono file now on both speakers for the first time. I had to close and restart my apps to be sure these settings had worked. A little more work showed that the mono sound was previously being routed to the center channel which was not connected on my system. It appears to have resolved my issue but why the importance of these setting was never mentioned by apple is beyond me. If this works for anyone else let me know.

  • Working with preloader and FLV files

    I am able to get the Flash preloader working with say an image like JPG but when I attempt to have the preloader load a video it doesn't work. I read that in order to use a FLV file it needs to be embedded into a SWF file so preloader can work with it. One issue with embedding the FLV file into the SWF is the sound does not match up with video after that conversion which can kinda be fixed by changing the FPS.
    Needless to say I have not been able to get this working correctly. I am not sure if there is a work around for this issue.
    Thanks for all the help out there.

    Here is my code
    var imageURL:String = "vid12.SWF";
    var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(imageURL);
    uiLoader.scaleContent = true;
    uiLoader.load(request);
    progressBar.source = uiLoader;
    progressBar.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, progressHandler);
    progressBar.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, completeHandler);
    function progressHandler (event:ProgressEvent):void {
    status_txt.text = int(event.currentTarget.percentComplete) + " %";
    function completeHandler (event:Event):void {
    progressBar.removeEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, progressHandler);
    progressBar.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, completeHandler);
    removeChild(progressBar);
    status_txt.text = "";

  • Quicktime and .avi Files

    Where do I go to get a plug-in for Quicktime to let me play .avi movie files? I went to the site where it says it might be, but I don't see anything for .avi files. Thanks for any help.
    PS. I downloaded VLC, but everytime I right click the .avi file, go to open with, then pick VLC, it starts to open then closes.

    Yes, that does work, but I'm viewing avi files over
    the network, so it's hard to open VLC, then click
    open file and go over the network to get the file.
    There's got to be an easier way.
    In VLC (because this'll come up again) just choose 'open Network' and supply the URL for the stream/resource (in some case you may have to dig into the source of the web page - or the one the link actually directs you to to find something that starts mms:// or RTSP: or similar).
    This is particularly handy because in VLC - as in mplayer/ffmpegx and others) you can pipe the output to a file on disk in many cases (I hate streams. I like files.

  • HT3775 Quicktime and AVI Files

    Quicktime says it supports AVI videos, but when I try to play mine it says I need to download a codec?

    There are multiple types of AVI encoders, and as such not all AVI files are recognised by QT.
    The easiest thing to do is to move away from QT, and install VLC, which handles nearly all types of files.

    Good luck.

  • Quicktime and VOB files

    I am trying to export a vob file (legal, it's my production) as a quicktime so that I can edit in FCP. My problem is that I can only play back the first 19 seconds of my 28 minutes of media when opened in quicktime. I recently downloaded OpenShiiva and was able to encode an Xvid, but even as a QT movie it will not import into FC. Any ideas?

    Well, a search here would find lots of ideas.
    1. Buy Apple MPEG-2 component for QT
    2. Use (free) MPEG Streamclip to open VOBs, correct timecode errors.
    3. With Streamclip, Export to DV (or any QT format but DV makes sense for editing)
    4. Use in FC or iMovie.
    Note the 19 seconds is 99.9% due to timecode errors. The data is broken up and MPEG-2 depends on timecodes so you fix those as above. Then you will see all 28 minutes.
    Also note had you been able to export more than 19 seconds you woudl have lost all the audio.

  • Quicktime and tiff files

    I use a windows 7 laptop. In the course of my week I view many tiff files. I have the default program for tiff set as windows photo viewer. Nonetheless, Quicktime always comes up. I wouldn't mind, but I cannot view all pages, and sometimes nothing shows. So each week I have to remove Quicktime in order to view my tiff files in Windows Photo Viewer. Very, very, frustrating. Any thoughts?

    Excellent news, Bulent!
    I hope Quicktime does not, later, try to take over again.
    Good point ... next time you do a QuickTime update directly from the Website:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    ... very near the end of the install, there should be a screen with a "Configure File/MIME types" button. Click the button, go to the MIME types, and make sure that that TIFF image entry is unchecked. That should avoid the problem in future.
