Quicktime and .mov

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me WHY a .mov file cannot be played on the new version of Quicktime??? Isn't a .mov a quicktime file?
I just bought a new HD video camera thinking it would be great to record on a card and easy to download to my computer to use in iMovie. but NOOOOO The camera records movies as .mov.
I have been reading the threads on this and everyone talks about codec and what not.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IN SIMPLE STEPS.. WHAT I HAVE TO DO TO GET MY .MOV FILES TO BE PLAYED AND IMPORTED INTO iMovie?
HELP HELP HELP! Are there any programs I could buy that would help?
I know I'm asking a lot... but I really want to know
Thanks in advance, Sharona

I don't have the brand name,Something like "Aveteck"? but it takes .mov at 1280x720 at 30fps or 720 x 480 at 30fps. It says in the manual that the pc requirements for HD movies is OS 10 + and QuickTime 7.0 and higher. Thanks

    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

    Hi morgangang,
Although that message is not listed in the following article, I would still go through it for help.  Things like installing in safe mode may help.
    QuickTime: Windows troubleshooting tips
    Troubleshooting Tips
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements.
Try running ScanDisk to verify that the directory is OK. This is an important step to take before installing any software.
Try running the stand-alone version of the QuickTime installer in "Safe Mode." It is available here. This can help to isolate issues with background applications, and some driver conflicts.
Make certain you have installed the most recent drivers for your sound and video cards. Even if you have a "brand new" computer, it is not guaranteed to have the most recent software installed. Contact the manufacturer of your sound and video cards for additional information.
Make certain you have installed a recent version of DirectX.
Errors are usually related to software conflicts, unusable files, or incompatibilities. They can also be related to specific hardware combinations, and sometimes the way in which the hardware is configured. Keep in mind that an error message does not necessarily point to a particular cause or solution. Since there can be many different causes for a particular symptom, some suggestions may not work, and you may need to discover a solution on your own.
Note: Please contact Microsoft Corporation or your computer vendor for help configuring Microsoft Windows.

  • Quicktime video (.mov file) will not load and play in Firefox 3.6.16

I have a computer with Firefox 3.6.16 installed that will not play Quicktime videos (.mov files) in the browser. This is a desktop computer.
Another computer (laptop) with exactly the same version of Firefox installed will load and play them perfectly in the Quicktime player.
Both computers have Quicktime addin 7.6.9.0 installed and designated as the default application for Quicktime movies.
Both computers play the videos correctly in IE 8.
When attempting to play the video in Firefox, the player window opens and attempts to load the video, but soon seems to freeze leaving a black window open where the player should be.
From what I have observed, this seems to be a problem related specifically to this computer, and since the video plays in IE I have ruled out the firewall blocking loading from the site.

Hi, I've exactly the same problem, 'cept I've XP Pro. When I say exactly, I mean the format used is HDV 1080i60, along with everything else there.
And I'm right there with you. Why Quicktime can't play a natively encoded HDV Quicktime file (using Final Cut Pro), is beyond me, but basically, I've used K-Lite Codec Pack, and Quicktime. Neither work, although Quicktime does ask for internet connectivity to download resources or something similar (I don't have Internet Access at home). I've used VLC on a friend's PC, and, while it works, there is a very strange, and irritating flicker where there's heavy movement
Where can I get the resource needed, as another party needs to view the clip, and they already have it. So if they can update their codec library or similar, then that would be much better (as I wouldn't need to upload a FullHD Video again)
    thanks

I backed up my movies and rebuild my computer, and after making sure i'm using the latest version of itunes and quicktime and and making sure i still had spare computer authorizations, i still get error 23132.  Please help.

I had this exact issue.  Spent over an hour on the phone with apple support, they couldn't resolve.  Here is what I ended up doing, that worked.
    1.  Turned iTunes match off on all my iOS devices
    2.  Deleted the offending playlists from the iOS device they originated on
    3.  Started iTunes, let it run (literally) for an hour before it became responsive.  First thing I did, before clicking anywere else was disable iTunes match.  If I clicked anywhere, it would clock for another hour.
    4.  Let iTunes run overnight, by morning it had cleaned out the repeating play lists.  This got my Mac/iTunes back to an operable state.
    5.  Restore iPhones from backup in iTunes.
What was causing my issue was a single playlist that was created on an iPhone, then suddenly showed up with several thousand duplicates on my other iPhone.  The culprit playlist did not, for some reason, duplicate itself on my two iPads.  Apple support seemed to think it was because the problem iPhone tried to sync the playlist to iCloud over and over again unsuccessfully, then it finally went through and populated the thousands of blank/failed playlists which then tried to propigate to iTunes and my other iOS devices.  Seems like a reasonable theory.
I have not yet re-enabled iTunes match.  So, no idea what will happen if I decide to go back down that rabbit hole.

  • Mavericks + Quicktime and forced subtitles in TV Shows and movies

I have noticed that when I now open a TV Show or a movie from my external drive (M4V files) forced subtitles will not show. They don't even appear in the subtitles menu so I can manually enable them.
I usually use Subler to edit my shows and movies' metadata and add SRT subtitles after I download them. This has worked flawlessly in my Mac and my iPhone until I updated to Mavericks, so it must be related.
However, if the subtitle track is not checked, Quicktime automatically enables it (I suppose that's because default audio in OS X is Spanish but the audio track in the file is English). I'm not sure if VLC has changed its behaviour too (That would be strange, but forced subtitles don't appear either).
I have over 355 GB of TV Shows and about 2,1 TB of movies that I wouldn't want to edit, so is there any solution to this, like a hidden preference I hae not found yet? Thanks in advance!

You can also spend a few days searching for "creating custom screen graphics for movies." Try youtube but you wil lfind better stuff on vimeo. Many fo the motiongraphics forums have discusssion areas where artists will share their methods. Lopok carefully for behind the scenes features and docos created by the artists.
However, After Effects is only where the animation happens. You design and previsualize your effects in other applications. Well, there are some fabulous presets you can purchase but, of course, they are relatively expensive. Once your familiarity with AE goes beyond the most basic stuff, you wil appreciate why presets and effects packages cost what they do.

movies played on a macbook pro stall for split seconds in quicktime and vlc. Anybody else?

Don't worry, there is nothing wrong with your computer. I have the same issue, and it is a bug. Sometimes a restart solves it. Sometimes and if you use subtitles, you will see the first line being displayed but the second one not, etc.
I have reported that to Apple and there is hope for a fix.

Recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion then Mavericks. I have Final Cut Express and when I export to Quicktime, and open to play the movie, Quicktime starts to "convert" it? What is this about????

My existing movies are all the following types straight from FinalCut
    Apple Intermediate Codec, 1920 × 1080, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
This particular movie is 6.66 Gb
The new Quicktime player in OS Mavericks converts these to the following format:
    Apple ProRes 422, 1920 x 1080
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
And a movie size of 6.48 Gb
Please, please can someone tell me why?

  • QuickTime no longer plays certain MP4 and MOV files

After upgrading from 10.6 Snow Leopard to 10.9 Mavericks, I've noticed that all the MP4 files taken with my Samsung smartphone no longer play in QuickTime (or with Quick Look), whereas they played just fine in Snow Leopard. The MP4 files use the H.264 codec. Some other MP4s I have, which use the same codec, will play in QuickTime and Quick Look. I've also found some older MOV files (using the SVQ-3 codec) that don't play now.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there any fix, or does it perhaps require an OS update? Since I skipped OS 10.7 and 10.8, I don't know what the situation was there.

You may have better luck in the Quicktime threads.

This post by martbr explains the situation well…
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23530041#23530041
Try Quicktime player 7 (it's better if you have a QTPro 7 code)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL923
It seems to support everything that it did before Mavericks (including Flip4Mac & Perian codecs), what is different is that the OS uses AVFoundation not Quicktime, the former doesn't support additional codecs therefore there is little hope of getting Finder previews for files with unsupported codecs.

  • Poor video playback from movies and DVD in Quicktime and DVD player

    Hello.
I have just taken delivery of a smashing Intel iMac C2D 20".
I appear to be having problems playing back video and DVD. let me explain:
When entering full screen on a DVD, the picture is very blocky (pixilated). This happens on all DVD discs I have used.
The same happens if I playback a MPEG or AVI, and also when I use Eye TV to playback TV.
I have run the Apple Hardware test, and it returned no faults.
The Video Card is the ATI Radeon X1600 with 256mb
I am sure that there is a problem because I have just compared playback using my old G5 iMac and G4 Powerbook using the same media files and DVD's and they playback fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions (other than calling Tech Support at this stage as I will blow a fuse after being on the phone for 1.5 hours getting nowhere, and with agents not knowing which keypresses to initiate stuff - sorry - Rant over - I just want to get this resolved)
As a side note: I have just installed Windoze XP on a partition, and the playback of DVD and MPEGS are fine - so it leads me to think maybe its software??
Not one to let things get the better of me - I installed Real Player and VLC.
BOTH of these play back the media correctly.
So I guess it is Software for sure, and I guess its Quicktime. Does Quicktime run DVD Player as well?
I did a roll back to a previous version of Quicktime, and it screwed up the mac. It would book, but would not load the Finder.
So I archived and reinstalled, and I had 7.1.2 QT, and the problem was still there. So up again to 7.1.3 and problem still persists.
I have come to the conclusion that this is to do with Quicktime on a C2D processor iMac.
Can anyone shed any light on this or suggest a solution?
    Manythanks
    Glenn

  • Quicktime and media encoder problem

I am trying to make a quicktime movie with Premiere CS4. The project is 870 still frames rendered from 3DS MAX. Everything works fine when I export and it sends the movie to Media Encoder's Queue. When I hit "Start Queue". the project starts to encode then quickly finishes with a green check mark next to the project, however no video is made. Please note I have tried other file formats such as AVI and it works fine. This seems to be am issue with QT. I have tried just about every QT codec as well and nothing seems to work. The codec I normally use is animation.
I have successfully done this many times in the past with no problems. Unfortunately, I recently had to replace my main harddrive which died that stored Windows XP, therefore I had to re-install Adobe Master Collection CS4. After the reinstall media encoder won't make Quicktime movies anymore.  And yes I have QT installed. I had ver 7.6.2. I read somewhere that 7.5.5 works better with premiere CS4 so I found that, uninstalled 7.6.2,  and installed 7.5.5, however, unfornuately it did not fix the problem. Anyone know how to fix this or having the same issues? Please see my specs below. Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks for help in advance.
    Intel Quad processor
    4 GIG Ram
    Nvidia 8800 GTX video card

Digging further, this is the "official" solution  from adobe  -
    Quote
Do one or both of the following solutions:
Solution 1:  Create a shortcut to the Premiere Pro executable file, rename the shortcut to  Premiere, and move the shortcut to C:\Program Files\Common  Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
    Close all Adobe applications.
In Windows  Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. (If you  installed Premiere Pro CS4 in a location other than the default of C:\Program  Files\Adobe, then navigate to your custom installation location.)
Right-click on Adobe Premiere Pro.exe (which might appear without the .exe  extension) and choose Create Shortcut.
Rename the newly created shortcut to  just Premiere.
Important: The name of the shortcut must be exactly  Premiere with no other characters.
Open a second Windows Explorer  window, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
Move the Premiere shortcut that you created into the dynamiclink folder.
Solution 2: Remove and reinstall all Premiere Pro CS4 components or all  Adobe Creative Suite 4 components.
    Do one of the following:
Windows  XP: Choose Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Windows  Vista: Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
In the  list of installed programs, select Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe Creative Suite  4 Production Premium, or Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection.
Click  Change/Remove (Windows XP) or Uninstall (Windows Vista).
Follow the  on-screen instructions to remove all components of Premiere Pro CS4 (including  Adobe Encore CS4 and Adobe OnLocation CS4) or to remove all components of your  edition of Adobe Creative Suite 4.
    Re-install your Adobe software.

  • Quicktime and iTunes won't play anything, require computer restart.

Since installing Lion and the latest iTunes, I cannot consistently play songs or videos in iTunes (or Quicktime, for that matter). I hit the play button and it changes to a pause button, but the file doesn't progress past 0:00. I try pausing and restarting the song (or movie) and it doesn't play. This occurs both with songs on my computer and in previews from the iTunes Store. Restarting my iMac seems to fix it, but the problem returns after a period of use. Quitting and restarting iTunes does not fix the problem.
It seems that I need to reinstall Quicktime and/or iTunes (not sure how), but I'm open to other suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.

    jmaybee,
You need to go get a program called Pacifist 3.2.2 (it's shareware but you can use it for free - I cannot say enough of how great this program is, it has saved my skin more times than I can count)
    http://www.charlessoft.com
Then get the Snow Leopard disk that came with your system and put it in the optical drive and let it mount.
Using Pacifist, use the "Open Apple Install Discs" button, select the Snow Leopard disk and let it read the package installers. This may take some time, as it's got to read the DVD and pull up all the installer .pkg files..
When Pacifist is done, you'll see something that looks like this:
    http://home.comcast.net/~foodandart/MacForums/PacifistSnowLeopardQT.jpg
Dig down into the installer packages thusly:
    Contents of OSInstall.mpkg
       Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware
          Contents of EssentialSystemSoftwareGroup
             Contents of Essentials.pkg
                Applications
                   QuickTime Player.app
Select the QuickTime player to highlight it, then you just hit the large arrow at the upper left corner of the Pacifist window (sorry for my black Snow Leopard scheme making things hard to see) and it will ask you if you are certain and also to backup files (why? they're gone already!) and it will install the QuickTime Player to the default location in your Applications folder.
I *just* tried this with my own system and tossed my original copy of QTX on the Desktop and the new install works perfect.
    There you go..
    Regards,
    Deb.

bringing my library across from my external harddrive, i have noticed that all my House episodes (amongst others) and some older movies will not show in my Library, is there a lack of sync with older files in itunes10.5?
Any help would be much appreciated because this might question my belief in the itunes phenomenum in contrast to just owning a DVD?

Got it working today. I waited until there wre enough messages posted from others in other threads to hopefully get a solution.
I had originally not been able to load iTunes 10.5 64 bit on my HP. I did uninstall, I loaded an older version 10.2 and tried to upgrade it. Nothing worked.
There was a post to another thread about removing QuickTime and then re-installing QuickTime. That did not work. I uninstalled QuickTime again. Then I found a post to uninstall the Appl Software Updater. I did that through Control Panel.
Now my system had only iTunes 10.2 on it, no software updater, no QuickTime.
I ran the full version of iTunes 10.5 (that you get at itunes.com
It ran and when done installing all its components, it started iTunes. I checked the version in Help and it was 10.5.
Not a very pleasant experience. Be aware that if you load an old version like I did, you will have to delete your music library that has an itl extension. This phone and computer had no music so it was not a problem. If you have a lot of music, I would not load an earlier version. Just uninstall all the stuff and do your install.
