Quicktime "?" appears on embedded videos in Firefox

Hi, and thanks for reading this.
Quite a few of you have had problems fixing the issue with the QT '?' in safari (for those who did not fix it moding your QT pref file seems to be the way to go - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195827&tstart=0 ,see the post by krotzebojer then the post by ventifact (you dont need to delete the whole string))
So that fixed the problem for me in Safari by almost 4 months now of internet searching and I still can solve the Firefox issue. This post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5942086&#5942086 didn't solve the issue for me.
Can anyone help solving the issue or indeed if anyone has been trying somethings that they have read about but have not worked it would be great if you could post so I can what others have been trying.
Many Thanks!

QT with a ? refers to Flash video.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5.2)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • [Solved] embedded videos in firefox take a lot of CPU time

Playing embeded videos in Firefox take a lot of CPU time. Actually my old computer is not able to play these videos correctly if they are in HD. The problem appears with flash videos (not so surprising, flash sucks...) but also with html5 videos (there is an option in youtube to turn that on). However if I succeed to have the direct URL, these videos play perfecrtlky fine in mplayer using not more than 10-20% of CPU time. Is there a solution to that? Is there any possibility to use an external player to play HTML5 videos in firefox? If anybody knows, Why this problem, are the mozilla folk aware of this problem? (Note that I posted a thread a long time ago for this problem but concerning flash only)

There's not much you can do to make HTML5 videos as fast as Xv, see http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/wiki/FAQ. They are slow for the same basic reason as Flash... the video overlay cannot be used because the standard allows for controls and CSS to be rendered on top of the video.
As for redirecting to an external player... this is not as easy as it could be. If the videos appeared in <embed> tags or <object> tags, one could use Mozplugger, Media Player Connectivity and other programs, but I don't think one has been written to handle the <video> tag. An upcoming update to firefox will make it use gstreamer, however. If this still results in slow playback, it will at least make it easier to use an external player. I imagine you would have to patch firefox to make it use a port on the localhost as the video sink instead of the screen. Then you would run gst-launch to receive that RTP stream.

  • How to play the pdf embedded video on firefox

I embed video into pdf quite often, if I want everyone with Acrobat reader version earlier than 9 (6,7,8) can open it, I have to chose "Create legacy multimedia content..." when I embed the video. The problem is, when I make the pdf with Mac, usually I use mp4 video, but a lot of PC's can not open it because they don't have the codec (they have to install it first); but if I embed it with wmv, Mac users can not open it. Also the latest Firefox browser doesn't have the plug-ins for the new pdf, thus can not play the embedded video. Anyone can help? Many thanks...

    Hi Philips,
Thanks for your input, but that's not the problem. I've got Flip4Mac  already installed, and I have quicktime pro, so no problem for my intel  based Mac running WMV under quicktime.
The problem is, I can not play the PDF embedded video WITHIN FIREFOX /  SAFARI browser. Just found out that they only have plug-ins for viewing  pdf files, not with embedded video.
    Thanks anyway.
Adobe has not had a PDFPlugin for Mozilla Products Since OS 9. I have put in a bug about it at least once every year.
There is a PDF Browser Plugin by Shubert of Germany, that will view PDF's. Now Safari will work with the Acrobat PDFViewer Plugin and any other Browsers using Webkit including iCab. You can set SeaMonkey FireFox, Camino,  to use the Adobe Reader or even Acrobat rather than a plugin.
It's sad and funny at the same time. Adobe until Acrobat came out was just a Font provider. And Adobe got started with other products on the Mac, because mac users were a little more bold and daring and would try out new technology. Acrobat on PC (Widows/DOS) wasn't accepted for another two years. Then when then got a foot in the door in the Windows world, they all but abandoned the Mac Platform.
They refuse to fix crash and performance issues on Mac for Flash. One reason why Jobs has took the stance he has about Flash on the iPad/iPhone.
But they are not the only ones. Intuit (Quicken) got started on Mac first. Then when they got toe hold in PC world they have been shafting Mac Users every since.

  • Why does border appear around embedded video?

    Hello,
I have an embedded YouTube video in a page on my site. It was working fine for a while but I've just discovered that there is now a black edge showing on the left, right and bottom of the video? I created a white round cornered frame within Premier so that it's part of the video. I did this as the pgae it's embedded in is white so that when it plays back it appears seamless and with curved edges to match it's container. This worked fine for a week or so but now it has these black edges? Can anybody tell me why? You can see for yourself at www.glovesanddoves.com. Go to the fighters page and you'll see the video at the bottom. The video's width is a multiple of 16 and the ratio is 16:9 at 384px X 216px. The containg Divs are also set to these measurements.
    I've attached a screenshot below:
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Jack

It only seems to be affecting the page when viewed in Safari although it was working fine for over a week before today?

  • Issue with TOC overlaying MP4 embedded video in Firefox (Captivate 7 HTML5 output)

Only in Firefox, I am coming across an issue when I have a video embedded on a slide, the overlaying Table of Contents displays but is not clickable. This is both when the video is paused and playing. The TOC comes over the embedded video area on the slide. I have considered it is possibly a z-index issue with Firefox, but really need a workaround.
    Firefox 28.0, Captivate 7 HTML5 package, MP4 video

    Hello Kris,
Please check your output in other browsers like Internet Explorer and Google chrome as well.

  • Hide/Show quickTime controller in embedded video

The controller bar on my embedded QTs remains visible all the time.  Can anyone tell me how to have it hide once it starts playing, appearing again if the mouse rolls over it?
This is the code I've used:
    <embed src="http://www.site.com/movie.mov" width="920" height="518" scale ="tofit" type="video/quicktime" postdomevents="true" showlogo="false" /embed>

Can somebody tell me how to embed a .mov period!  Thanks!  I am not kidding!
I have no idea why this is not working.  This is what I have done.
    1) created a folder in my main directory called "movies"
    2) put my .mov file in the "movies folder
    3) place curser where I want to embed movie.
    4) from the insert tab select media then plugin
    5) browse to my .mov and select it
    6) set parameters to loop- true
I am unable to "view in browser".  I just see a big blank space where the movie is suppose to be with the QT logo and a question mark over it.
Hopefully I am posting this in the right forum.  I have not done any web work in years so I am sure there is something pretty obvious I am forgetting!
Also, it is my goal to have a fluid width for the video.  Help me please!!!  thanks!

  • Embedded VIdeo Play Issue in Firefox

    Hi peeps.
My OS is Win7 Home Basic 64-bit. I can't play any embedded video in Firefox, but I can in Chrome and IE. The video screen just goes black with circle loading stopped in motion. The tab isn't frozen or not responsive, simply the video wouldn't load. The only solution I have is uninstall both Firefox and Adobe Flash Player and reinstall both. After that I can play embedded video (like in Youtube, DailyMotion, etc). Even if I close and reopen Firefox, I can still play them.
But whenever I restarted my laptop, I'm back to square one. Unless I reinstall both Firefox and Adobe Flash Player, I can't play any embedded video again in Firefox. I have tried disabling protected mode in Firefox (when I could play the video in Firefox, I have unchecked the Hardware Acceleration-whatever). Already tried Firefox Safe Mode (Shift+Click on Firefox) but same problem. I have tried installing Firefox v24, 27, 28. Adobe Flash Player is the latest version 12.0.0.77.
I don't have any conflicting extensions or plugins. The other plugins I have installed are Adobe Acrobat 11.0.6.70, Google Update 1.3.22.5, Yahoo Application State Plugin 1.0.0.7 (I can say for sure Yahoo plugin isn't the root of this problem since I have experienced this problem way before I have YM installed). The other extensions I have are Greasemonkey 1.15 (same with Yahoo plugin, I have experienced this problem before I added Greasemonkey to Firefox) and IDM C.C. 7.3.68.
My guess is the problem is related with IDM. Iirc, before I have IDM installed, I could play embedded video in Firefox. But it's strange, since my netbook (this Firefox problem is in my laptop with win7 Home Basic) with XP SP3 can play embedded video in Firefox with IDM installed. Actually, I never had any problem regarding playing embedded video in my netbook.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if this helps.
You can use the MSConfig program or the Autoruns utility to see which software and services are getting started (be cautious with disabling services).
If you have software like Advanced SystemCare that might reset some files to older versions to protect these files against changes then check the settings or uninstall this software.

  • Quicktime Plugin does not work in Firefox

This is my problem: out of the blue, Quicktime stopped playing embedded files in Firefox. I'm told that I need to download the appropriate plugin. I have re-installed Quicktime more than once, to no avail. Embedded content will run from IE, but not from Firefox - Quicktime does not even appear in the "about:plugins" page at all.
I have Quicktime 7.3.1 installed on a PC running Windows XP Home SP2, using Firefox 2.0.0.11. Any help would be appreciated.

No one? I'm about to switch to QT Alternative, since Apple Support seems not to even know there is such a problem.

  • Why does embedded video cause audio sync issues?

    Greetings all,
I have a question that is perhaps best answered by an Adobe developer or someone who knows the SWF file format and various audio/video standards fairly well. When one drags an FLV file into the library in flash authoring tool, a window appears. If you click "Embed FLV in SWF and play on timeline", an awful message appears, "WARNING: Embedded video is likely to cause audio synchronization issues...". My question is: why would there be any audio synchronization issue? Is this really just a bug/unimplemented feature? Or is there some fundamental shortcoming of current versions of the SWF file format that does not allow for the FLV audio/video signals to be properly encoded in the SWF file? Or is it that the flash player plays SWF and FLV data in fundamentally different ways and that even if the audio/video is perfected sync'd in the SWF file, the fact that it's a SWF file causes flash player to lose sync?
I'm guessing only a Flash developer could answer this (and probably not just any Flash developer!), so if there are any out there, please spare some wisdom for a poor lost SWF surfer.
       Thanks!

    Hi:
    Welcome to discussions!
From what I am reading, you are trying to use the audio that was in the original video-right? By that, I mean, you haven't added a voice over or music-just using the speaker's voice on the tape.
If so, you might want to try using something like a Fade Out or Fade In instead of one of the transitions that add or subtract to the length of the video
    [Quoted from iMovie Help]
Some transitions (for example, Cross Dissolve and Push) shorten your movie by a few seconds, depending on the speed of the transition. For example, if you add a transition with a speed of 2 seconds, iMovie overlaps 2 seconds from the first clip and 2 seconds from the second clip as it renders the transition. This shortens your movie by a total of 2 seconds.
The Overlap transition freezes the last frame of the clip on its left and superimposes it over the next clip. Fade In/Fade Out blackens the last frames of the clip on the left and the first frames of the following clip.
    [End quote]
Or you could try extracting the audio from the movie so that you could edit it and sync it that way.

  • Embedded videos do not appear in 6.0

I installed Safari 6.0 into Lion (I haven't yet quite got the courage to leap to 10.8) and am unhappy to find that embedded videos, YouTube / Flash at least, simply no longer appear.  There's only a big empty unresponsive space where they should be (no outline, no box, no indication that there is anything present, just vertical displacement of text).
The videos appear and play fine in YouTube itself, and they're still fine in Firefox.  I'm running the latest version of Flash and do not have ClickToFlash or any other Flash-blocking plug-in installed.
    Thoughts?

Helpful troubleshooting tip!  Disable extensions and see if anything changes.  I traced the problem to a new extension called "Google Disconnect", which is intended to keep Google from seeing you at other websites.  I suppose if I think through it hard enough I can see how that might block YouTube (aka Google) videos when presented off-site.
Can I give myself points for answering my own question?
(The answer appears to be yes!)

There have been issues reported with the 13.0.0.182 version of the Flash plugin crashing on some older Mac computers due to the compiler generating incompatible code.
The only way to recover is to uninstall the Flash 13 version and revert to an older Flash version and wait for Adobe to release an update that addresses this issue.

  • Firefox for Android crashes on all three of my Sony Xperia V's (LT25i), usually when a page contains one or more embedded videos or Flash animations.

I have three Sony Xperia V (LT25i) phones, all of which are running the latest Android firmware version (for that model (9.2.A.2.5) to date. Since I had been using Firefox since 2007, I tried numerous times to run Firefox on all three with limited success. The browser crashes whenever I load a page that had embedded videos or any other form of animation. The issue was so frustrating that it caused me to stop using Firefox altogether and switch to Chrome, which is in no way nearly as sophisticated, streamlined and feature-rich as my formerly-beloved Firefox - a situation which I would very much like to reverse. Thanks.

Oh, there are too many to list - basically any page that's even slightly heavy-handed with videos and/or animation.
For the record, I managed to ''somewhat'' alleviate the issue by uninstalling Adblock Plus, but I haven't yet done enough testing to verify that Adblock Plus ''actually was'' the root cause of the problem. However, that didn't solve the issue of the text on any page flickering at five-second intervals, which makes reading longer articles a very annoying and unpleasant experience.
