QuickTime, AVI, Codec

Okay, so first off, I have searched and searched and searched for the answer to my question, but I haven't had any luck finding a resolution.
I downloaded some .avi files (and yes, I realize .avi files are the devil, so no need to harp). I was able to get the actual video playing in QuickTime by downloading a DivX codec that the QuicktTime site suggested. However, I have no sound.
And I realize this is pretty hit or miss regarding what codec I need, and I've downloaded a lot just to try. Nothing seems to be working though.
So as someone else suggested I went ahead and downloaded Perian, however still no sound.
I got info on the movie and under format it says:
, 704 x 400, Millions
'ms ', Stereo, 48.000 kHz
So I'm hoping someone can suggest something else to try, or at least advise me if I should just trash these avi files (although, I'd really rather not) and forget about it.
And, one other question, even if there's no sound in QuickTime due to codecs, if I were to burn these files to a DVD does anyone know if there would be sound for the finished disk?
Thanks in advance for the helpful, relevant answers.

  • HT1536 .AVI codecs that support retina display.

    Is there one that works?

All was fine until the organiztion's PC went south (10years old). I am covering with my personal equipment until a replacement can be approved and aquired. As fate would have it I just recently replaced my dying MacBook Air with a !3' Retina MacBookPro.
Thanks for the apmplifying info. This is a "horse of a different color." Had thought you were referring to the "Retina" iPad. Platform display type should not make a difference, Mac OS X version, QT player version, and compression format(s) used in the AVI container make all the difference in the world here.
Basic question is whether or not you have installed Perian and the QT 7 player app on the new system. Perian plus the QT 7 player basically support most AVI compression formats currently compatible with Mac OS X operating systems. Remember AVI is a legacy file format that has not been supported by Microdoft for more than 11 years. Some PC codecs have never been transcoded for OS X or Mac Intel platform use, some AVI files simply cannot be played by the QT players.
I have been unable to get .avi video to play on the MacBook using QuickTime Player and Flip4Mac. Neither currently supports .AVI for Retina is my understanding. I am looking for a temporary solution to just time play .AVI files once and done.
The real question is "what compression formats are you trying to play?" and "in which QT player on your new system?" If both QT 7 and Perian are installed and if the QT X player cannot play the AVI file natively, it will normally ask the user if he or she wants to play the file in the QT 7 player. To further complicate matters, since the introduction of Lion, Apple has, by default, turned off legacy codecs used by the embedded QT structure which were normally used natively for AVI export.
If playback is all you are interested in, then VLC can be used for this purpose since it includes its own codec resources within the app. The QT 7 player plus the Perian codec package provides similar playback capabilities. On the other hand, if you want to play and/or convert common AVI codec content to QT compatible files without purchasing a commercial conversion app, then you can use Perian (for decoding) and either QT 7 Pro ($29 USD) or the free MPEG Streamclip app (for encoding to any available export codec for which your system is configured).

  • No audio in Quicktime AVI files in MPEG Streamclip

When I import a Quicktime AVI file into MPEG Streamclip to edit, there is no audio. Annoyingly, if I convert that AVI file into an MP4 file and then import it into Streamclip the audio is working; but the loss of image quality is not acceptable. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Gopro 2.7k export quicktime animation codec custom 22gb mov file?

Adobe support told me to export using quicktime <animation codec <custom 2704 x 1536 res for my gopro 2.7k and it turned into a 22.5 gb mov file. (not even 2 minutes long!!!!)
What do I do next? I mean I cant upload that to youtube. (well I could)
I'm new to adobe is there a better way to get my 2.7k res without it being 22.5gb or how do I convert it smaller and what would be the best for youtube.
I'm trying to get the best quality so I can view it later on my retina screen. Should I just upload it as is for best quality even if it takes a day lol? Thanks soooo much

Ya np I actually just check again, back in july 2010 youtube allowed various 4k formates then lowered in 2012 to 2048 x 1536 (I'm glad I just checked that)
So ya I've been researching youtubes uploader as much as I can and from different people have said large files get crushed so some have had better results converting it to a smaller size (not resolution) and uploading it for better results but now I have a 22gb 1 minute video and am wondering the best way to convert it smaller.
Also strange question but converting a 2.7k to 1080 will provide cleaner and crisper picuter but how would a 2.7k exported at 4k look. I would think it'd look grainy but what if you were viewing that on a 1080 screen?

  • Quicktime animation codec bad playback

Hello, ever since I updated to the newest version of quicktime, any file using the Quicktime animation codec stutters and freezes on playback.
This has happened before, and rolling back to previous versions helped then, but isn't helping now.
I've gone far enough as to format the computer and reinstall everything, but the problem still occurs. Every other codec seems to work fine. I can work around it by using other export methods, but it's a problem when I need to edit previous or co-workers projects on my machine.
Any suggestion on how to fix this?

    Hello Kevin,
Sorry for late reply, and thanks for your interest in the case. I exported a section from my Premiere project using the animation codec, then reimported it. I got the same glitchy lines running through the clip, which hadn't existed in the edit (some clips from an EX1 camera, and some text animations).
Any thoughts why this might be happening?

  • CS4 - need to export file type: avi codec: XviD

I just downloaded the 30-day trial for PremierePro CS4 as I was having difficulty maintaining saturation when converting with Premiere Elements 4.0.  I was told that I could export my files in PremierePro CS4 with the specs I need, but I don't know how.  Specs I need are:
    Dimensions:  1360 x 768
    File Type:  .AVI
    Codec:  XviD
    30 Frames per second
I'm completely new to this so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.  I had downloaded some sort of XviD file online, and it added it to my export option, but it wouldn't do anything when I selected it and I would eventually have to close down PremierePro.  I've since removed the XviD program from my computer in case the program itself was corrupted.

I find that the DivX (commercial version of Xvid) encoder works fine, when that is the desired delivery format/CODEC. Fortunately, I do not have to do much of this, but it works.
    Good luck,

  • Missing QuickTime Video Codecs

I received 3 video files created using Final Cut Pro on a Mac. They were saved to a .mov file and placed on a dvd. The problem is when I try to play them on my pc using QuickTime or RealPlayer, I can hear audio but cannot see the video. I suspect I am missing some QuickTime video codecs I need but I'm not sure which ones or where to get them.
My computer is a special built that's why I don't list a Model.

Open the file using QuickTime Player and then use the Movie Inspector window to view the codecs used in it.
My guess is that you've got a file that uses codecs only available to FCP. They should export the file again using H.264 Video codec and AAC audio.

  • Missing AVI Codec in QuickTime

    Hello:
I am trying to convert some old home videos from AVI to MOV so that they can play on AppleTV.  The videos play fine in VLC Media Player on OSX, but I can't get them to open in QuickTime for export to MOV.  I get the well known "A Required Codec is not Available" error.
VLC Media Player's media properties dialog shows the files to be of this format:
    Video Codec: MS MPEG-4 Video v2 (MP42)
    Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV
    Audio Codec: PCM S16 (araw)
I've looked at the QuickTime supported media types page (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3775), where it seems that the video codec may be supported, if that's the same thing as MPEG-4 (Part 2).  However, the PCM S16 codec doesn't seem to be on that list.
Does anyone know how I can add support for these codecs to QuickTime?
Really my end goal is to convert the AVI to MOV.  Maybe there's a better way to do this.  I tried experimenting with VLC's streaming export features, but I couldn't get that to work.
    Thanks sincerely for any help!

Today, there are many methods to convert AVI to MOV. Here list two of the most common ways to help you.
    Method one:
If you don't mind wasting your time and your source file is smaller than 100MB, you can choose Online AVI to MOV Converter. You need to pai at least $7 per month to convert MP4 video larger than 100MB, that's too much.
    Method two:
If you care about the output quality and don't want to waste your time, a professional and easy-to-use AVI to MOV Converter is required.

  • QuickTime need codec to play avi on MacBook Pro retinal display but not on other Mac's with Mountain Lion?

Why will avi play on all my Mac's with Mountain Lion but not on my Retinal Display 13" Macbook Pro? Quicktime players are the same, OS are the same plugins are the same and up to date. Get the missing Codec warning only on retinal display.

You don't say if your MacBook Pro is the new version that supports USB 3, if not the card reader will default to USB 2. The Ultra II is listed as 10Mb/s on old cards and 15MB/s on new cards, both within USB 2 specification. Extreme III are listed as 20MB/s old cards and 30MB/s new. These 30 MB/s maybe a bit too much for USB 2, not sure. see http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1111
If the Macbook Pro as USB 3 support it could be that it does not recognise the card reader as USB 3 and default to USB 2.
    See Apple URL http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    Bullet point 11 may help.
Of course the card reader could be faulty and not read the Extreme III cards unless you have verified it working in other situations.

  • DivX upgrade corrupted quicktime AVI playing ability

I recently upgraded my DivX player and converter, after doing this my Quicktime player stopped playing AVI files. which is probably a good 85% of my videos and movies which i cant get to reformat to Mp4, MPEG or any of the other formats that it will play. Anyone have this happen before or have an idea of how to fix. and yes i have already tried to uninstall all the DivX components and it didn't resolve the issue at all.

and yes i have already tried to uninstall all the DivX components and it didn't resolve the issue at all.
Was QT 7 closed while you did this? QT 7 initializes the codec list each time the player is opened. So if the player was open while you uninstalled the codecs, the the changes would not be recognized.
Anyone have this happen before or have an idea of how to fix.
If you have the Perian package installed and had no previous codec conflict problems with the older DivX component, you might also try removing and reinstalling the Perian package. Some users have reported that DivX and Perian codec components may conflict with one another when installed in one relative order but not another. I.e., it appears the order in which codec components are initialized may or may not create problems.

  • Avi codec pack for mac??

    Hi,
We have recently switched over a few mac machines and are slowly getting the hang of them. After having issues playing back avi's on the machine i have downloaded the Perian codec pack for mac which allows me to play the files in quicktime etc and get audio output. I still have the problem however that when imported into Premiere/Encore etc i get video but no audio??? I dont want to have to convert all the files into compatible mac files as i just want a codec to install which will play them and solve the problem. The files are DivX codec built.
I find it odd that files will play with audio in quicktime on the machine but not in the adobe software. Tried reading around this on the web but have turned up nothing after Perian that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ian

    Thanks Hunt,
You seem to reply to most of these posts, so thank you very much for giving up your time to help others, much appreciated.
I have both converted the files - in a rather drawn out way through a couple of freeware programs to give me an mp3 audio file macs don't seem to mind - and and burnt DVD's on mac and PC to check for quality on both machines.
We have to work with DivX a bit for clients to create conference openers etc and if they specify footage from the web etc its generally the only format we can get it in on short notice. Horrible but the way of the world it seems.
Currently running mac book pro's for on site edit machines on the highest specs available for purchase i.e. i7 processor 7200rpm internal hard drive etc and Adobe CS5 and have to say that the 'macs never fall over' hype isn't true. Apart from having their file preferences for use which is a pain when crossing projects over from both platforms i have found both new macs crash when worked hard using premiere, after effects and photoshop/illustrator. We find CS5 has far fewer bugs and is more stable than CS4 mind you.
I'm sure that may queue mac lovers to put me straight on the much fabled shiny machines however.
    Cheers, Ian
