Quicktime back into iMovie ?

Hi
I upgraded from iMovie 3 to iMovie HD the other day with iLife' 05. When I tried to open the project, it asked if I wanted to upgrade and warned me I wouldn't be able to open it in older versions anymore, that was fine with me so I clicked. For some reason, when the movie launches the file is blank but I have a Quicktime version instead! I really don't want to have to go through the media folder and start again.
So, can I import the Quicktime movie back into iMovie so I can continue tweaking it? Or is that it now and if that's the case, can I still export it to dvd?
Also, I have some old movies clogging up my HD that I don't want anymore and I can't delete them. I've had a box open which lists all my documents on the HD but when I highlight the file to delete, or try and drag it to the trash, it doesn't go. Do I have to find a main source and delete it from there? Thanks.
iMac Flat Panel   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

I must confess that I assumed that the two audio tracts in iMovie were stereo, because in expert settings one can define stereo or mono. On one iMove track I had music, and on the other I had my voice. If it is exported then I assumed one must have access to both tracts to hear them. Since on my friend's computer I was only hearing one side, I came to the conclusion that he was not hearing the other tract. I could be mistaken, but that was my conclusion.

  • How do I move a project from an external drive back into Imovie

I recently bought an Iomega external hard drive to store documentary movies so that I wouldn't jam up my Imac's free space. However, after I moved an imovie/idvd project to it, and wanted to make changes, I could not move the project back into the Imac's drive. (It also would not burn from the external, giving me a multiplex error) When I tried to move the movie back into Imovie on the Imac it said Quicktime couldn't parse it. I saw various posts about parsing, but not about specifically about moving a project from an external drive. Can anyone offer any suggestions? It seems to me that I should be able to move a project back and forth without that much trouble.

Sounds like you have a DVD format (MPEG-2) and not an iMovie Project file.
The key phrases are "multiplex" and "parse". Both suggest MPEG-2 format when opened in QuickTime. It would also throw an error -2048 message if MPEG-2.
But another issue could be the file format of the external drive. Most ship pre-formatted for the Windows OS's but a Mac user should format using HFS+ (and others). If you didn't format the drive before moving the large iMovie Project onto it it may have become severely fragmented if the external used FAT 16 or FAT 32 (very common) formats. They have a 2 or 4 GB file size limit, respectively and would have made your Project unreadable when moved back and forth.
Use the Disk Utility app to find out the format of your external drive.

  • Can't import Quicktime .mov into iMovie 10

Is it possible to import a Quicktime movie into iMovie 10?  I used to be able to do this with iMovie 9 but cannot get it to work with 10.  I can drag it into an event but no clips show up.   I can't believe that Apple would require a 3rd party product to get this to work.
As a separate rant, you used to be able to edit clips directly in Quicktime but Apple removed this functionality a while back; ie. deleting parts of clips rather than just trimming from the ends.  It is getting tougher and tougher to do basic editing even if you stay within the Apple ecosystem...

.mov can contain a variety of different movie formats not all of which are importable into iMovie 10.  Try playing it in Quicktime player 10 - does it say it has to convert?   If it converts it, the resultant file should import into iMovie 10 OK.  see: OS X Mavericks: Some files may be converted when opened in QuickTime Player - Apple Support
In Quicktime 10 the way to do this is to split a movie into clips and trim each clip as required.  These can then be imported into iMovie and joined as part of a project.  See:  QuickTime Player 10.x: Rearrange your movie’s content
Quicktime 7 Pro (which does allow removing 'middle' parts of a movie) still works in Yosemite

  • How do i import footage from a dvd that i made on imovie, back into imovie?

How do I import footage from a dvd that i made on imovie, back into imovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • QuickTime file into iMovie?

I am trying to burn my Keynote speech with slides into a DVD-R so it can be replicated and sold.
So far I have created a QuickTime file of the speech (recorded timing) - now I think it needs to go into iMovie so I can
then 'hit" One Step DVD -
but I can't drag the Quicktime file into iMovie. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it greatly!

    Burning Keynote presentations in iDVD
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2936
Contributor Old Toad has added the following excellent advice:
To get the keynote presentation into an iDVD slideshow that you can advance slide by slide with a DVD player remove you need to convert each Keynote slide to a jpg file.  To to this go to the view all slide window, select all of the slides and type Command+P to start a print job.
While in the print window click on the PDF button at the bottom and select "Save PDF to iPhoto" from the drop down menu.  That will create a 200 dpi jpg file of each slide of the presentation.
Next add those slides to a slideshow in iDVD and select slide duration to Manual.  Now the finished DVD is played the DVD player remote will control the advance of the slide.
I suggest you follow this workflow to create the DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
As far as having no menu you must have a menu to fall back into once the presentation has finished.  If you want just a black screen use one of the old themes like Brushed Metal, Burlap, Sage or Graphite and put a blank, black image file in as the background.  You will have to have a button or text button in the menu so choose text and set the text to black if you want a fully blank menu.  Be sure to set the highlight color for the text button to black also.
Finally follow Klaus1's method of dragging the slideshow into the autoplay bin while in the Map mode so the slideshow will start automatically when the disk is inserted into the player.

  • Importing a powerpoint/quicktime movie into imovie

can someone tell me what i am doing wrong: when i import a powerpoint/quicktime movie into imovie the background goes orange... and i cannot get it to go white again... help! please!

Thanks for the link. We still had a the problem, but we found a woork around. It seem that if the power point has any sound in it then it only imports the sound. So we took all the sound out and then it imported fine. Then we put the sound back in and imported that so that then we had the sound effects. Any way it works! Thanks!

  • Bring dvd back into imovie to re-edit?

I made an imovie - successfully brought it into idvd - and burned a dvd. I showed it to my client and they wanted some changes. When I made the changes I saved a copy of the project (64 GB) which filled up my remaining hard drive space to capacity. I deleted the old movie to make room but the NEW movie (with my new edits) won't open (must not have fully saved properly...). So now I have nothing to work from. The only thing I can think of is to try to bring the .dv file back into imovie from the dvd I burned...will this work? Can I edit? Is it encrypted?

You will need to convert the DVD back into a DV file for imovie.

  • Import DVD back into iMove

I burned an iMovie slideshow in toast onto a DVD.
    Apple then replaced my HD.
I lost the project on my HD,and a lot more stuff.
How can I import the project back into iMove from the DVD?
I keep geting a error message. When I try.

You need to use an application that will convert MPEG 2 video to .mov or DV. There are many that do this including Toast 7, Cinematize, MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro with the Quicktime MPEG 2 Component, DVDxDV and many others.

  • Importing quicktime file into iMovie 11 resulting in distortion

After having trouble importing Quicktime files into iMovie hd6, I decided to buy iMovie 11. So the file imports without squishing the image into 4:3 as it did in iMovie hd6, but now the movie has a strange strobe like flashing that is not present in the original.
    Any ideas?

See if you can open the file in QuickTIme PLayer. Click Command-I (or WINDOW/INSPECTOR) in QuickTime Player. Tell us what is listed by the word FORMAT:

  • Quicktime movie into iMovie

How can I convert a quicktime movie into iMovie or somewhere I can burn it? I have lost my iMovie footage, but had saved it a couple years ago as a quicktime movie. I need to make my quicktime movie into a DVD.

You might find that Toast 6 (well now 7 but I use 6) is a good choice - I find at times when it chokes on MPEG-1 files, I convert them to QT using a lossless codec and then use the QT files to author a DVD. Great results.
I have even found that QT movies using the 3ivX codec or Sorenson , 1/2 hour in length yet only 500-600 MB turn out to look amazingly good in DVD format through Toast. Even though the comparable amount of DV or MPEG-2 as a source woudl be many times larger, so the QT codecs, the good ones do OK when transcoding.
So assuming your source is a decent codec it should look OK - author a disk image first then mount it and see how it plays and looks in the DVD player. Saves a DVD blank and some time initially.

  • How to put movie from disc back into imovie?

Hi, I have just put a disc that I created using iMovie and iDVD back into my G4 using Disc Utility. Seems easy to burn an exact copy, but I would like to get the movie on the disc back into iMovie so I can edit it further and make it part of a new iDVD project. Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi, Christine,
Yes, you can do it. See this for some help/suggestions as to what to use and how to do it: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7d7a6
You will lose some quality but it may not be so much to bother you.
You should always save your finished movies back to the camcorder DV tape. That way, you can always reimport that footage into any new iMovie project.
Either way, you will not be able to do the tight editing as you could on the original iMovie, but you can certainly add it to other movies, insert new movies, and delete some portions of your first movie. Remember that the audio you added as separate tracks will now be incorporated into the video and will not appear as separate tracks under the video.
    Hope this is helpful!

  • Importing completed iMovie back into iMovie for additional editing

My daughter recently completed a mini movie, courtesy of an Apple Film camp...lots of fun.
Her completed movie, made at the Apple Store using iMovie, was placed on a DVD. The DVD plays the movie, which is great, but i am not able to import the movie back into iMovie, so that I can edit it, or rather, shrink the size, for my daughter for use in other platforms.
Everytime I try to open the DVD, I have files for audio and files for video, which can't be imported in, and no complete iMovie file.
I'm probably doing something very stupid, and if somebody could help, that would be great.
    Thanks!

Once you encode your movie for DVD, it changes the format/codec to MPEG2 which is no longer readable by iMovie.
