Quicktime being slowtime

ok, for the last 22 hours, my computer has been installing quicktime 7.0.3, and has been hung on the "updating environment strings" and the taskmanager is showing qtplugininstaller.exe as the culprit. I have read many of hte threads in here and in the itunes section trying to resolve this issue, using both ccleaner nad windows install cleanup utility, with no success. As it stands, i can launch quicktime, because its hung up, but as soon as a cancel(read kill the install processes, as i cannot cancel from the install shield window itself), it rollsback, and i have no quicktime program, and itunes fails
need help soon, or apple will get a busted nano back

Hi Green-Shoot,
I understand that you are wanting to remove Quicktime as the default player. We would want to edit this option within the "Default Programs" control panel in Windows.
The following article outlines how to make iTunes the default player:
iTunes for Windows: How to make iTunes the default application for music and audio files in Windows Vista and Windows 7
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3202
Note: To make a different application the default media player, follow these same steps and select the application you want to use. iTunes for Windows can be configured to notify you if iTunes is not the default player for audio files.
Cheers!

  • HELP!!!  Quicktime Pro crashes when exporting

I've had no problems until today. All of a sudden, when I export a movie from quicktime, it crashes when I click on "settings" of the codec. So I basically open the file, go to "File>Export" and click on "Options". I then click on "Settings" and boom...quicktime disappears with your usual windows error sound. Like I said, I've had no problems up till today so I don't know what I could of done to cause this. I'm running Quicktime Pro 7.2 on Windows XP Pro 64bit. I've tried uninstalling it and tried older versions...nothing seems to work. My Sorenson Squeeze software also will not load quicktimes which I believe is related to this problem. Any ideas?

Sorry to hear you are having the same problem but I'm glad its just not me. I seriously don't know what I could have done to cause this. Some sort of bug or virus going around? I've heard of quicktime being hacked in the past by a worm which causes it to crash so I'm wondering if that's what's happening. It does suck you can't really call Apple about it.
Its becoming increasingly difficult these days to talk to a human about technical issues. If you do get one on the phone, its some support person getting paid min. wage who just puts you on hold forever as they look up your problem in a generic list of "help" files. I don't want knowledge base support...I want one on one support with a trained programmer who knows how to fix your problems!

  • Quicktimes: WHITE = GRAY

I am playing Quicktimes from inside of a Director shell...
The Quicktimes all have pure white backgrounds. If you open them in
Quicktime directly, the look perfect. However, when they play in
Director, the 'white' level appears as a 'light gray', and not true
white. Is there a setting or something that I should know about?
I have been researching - and I see all kinds of posts about
gamma levels in Quicktime being problematic when making
'computer-ready' quicktimes. Quicktime seems to have a tendency to
clip to broadcast levels automatically. I'm not 100% sure this is
the problem in my case though - since the movies play fine outside
of Director - they only get clipped to the gray level when played
    through Director.

Can' see the picture you post, so not sure how your screen is, though resetting SMC as well as NVRAM(PRAM) could solve the problem.

  • Quicktime & Flip 4 Mac

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, every time I try to open a wvm file that I have not opened before on my computer, Flip 4 Mac tells me that Quicktime must be installed in order for it to work. If I click "open with" and choose quicktime, everything works fine. I have the latest version of flip 4 mac and of course, Quicktime X. Does anyone know of a way for flip 4 mac to recognize quicktime being installed?

Yes - next time you need to choose 'Open with…', do it from the Info window of the file in question (Command-I) & click on the 'Change All' button. After that, you won't need to tell it again — it will always open WMV files in QT.

  • Quicktime installs/launches OK, but unresponsive at opening screen

Recently upgraded to most recent versions of iTunes and Quicktime. iTunes works OK, but Quicktime does not work. Can launch the program, it opens the Applestore splash screen but none of the links work. Even some of the menu items (e.g. Help/QuikTime Player Help) do not work. If I open a video, it presents a very pixalated view although audio is OK. I removed it via add/remove programs, reinstalled from Apple web site, still have same symptoms?
    Appreciate any help.

    Let's work on those first.
We'd better check to see if your firewall might be blocking QuickTime from accessing the internet.
Have a look through your firewall rules. Is there one there for QuickTime? If so, is QuickTime being allowed full access to the internet?
If there's a full access rule there, it might still be worth deleting the rule and adding a fresh one for QuickTime. (I've had some experience of NIS 2007 automatically-generated rules for QuickTime being a bit skunky for some earlier versions of QuickTime. Deleting the existing rule and creating a new rule got me past that batch of issues.)
EDIT: sorry Jacumba, didn't see your post. didn't mean to barge in.

  • Skips in Quicktime, quits playing in iTunes.

I recently aquired an mp3 that cuts short when playing in iTunes, but when played in any other player it skips where it would cut off in iTunes, and continues to the end of the song. Is this common? Is there any easy fix that I'm overlooking?
    Thanx.
    Jug

    Ahhh...never mind.
    Solved it (I think).
I checked to see if I had any suspicious files recently, and no dice.
Finally I looked at the console for error messages and saw some messages about Quicktime being unable to find some sound plug-in or other.
To make a long story short, the problem was my Apogee Duet. The Duet (which I absolutely love) is a a portable audio interface. The Duet really wants to be directly connected to your Mac's Firewire port because it needs to be a bandwidth hog. But I've got only a single Firewire port on my Macbook Pro, so against the recommendations of the Apogee people, I plug my Duet into one of my many Firewire disks and plug those disks into my laptop.
This ordinarily works great, but every now and then the sound gets a little messed up. And all I do is unplug the Duet from the back of the hard disk for a second and then plug it in again. Good to go.
But this time it behaved differently. Somehow it messed up my sound completely, even over reboots. And this seems to have messed up Quicktime. As Quicktime played back video files, it must have been looking for something sound related that it couldn't get, and this pretty much crippled Quicktime everywhere.
But once I did my unplug trick, everything went back to normal.
For anyone interested in audio interfaces, I absolutely love my Duet. In fairness to them, I'm using it in a way they don't recommend. Because of this, I view this problem as mostly my own dumb fault.

  • How can update or remove QuickTime?

I been trying to edit a video on my GoPro Studio application on my macbook pro but I wasn't allowed to add new audio. I found out that its because of my quicktime being the old version or its needs to be reinstalled but I can find either options and I can't even delete it . How can I check if its up to date or to reinstall the program?

I assume you are referring to QT X v10.1 here rather than Mac OS X v10.1 (Puma) which was released in September 2001 (support limited to QT 6 v6.3.1) and replaced by Jaguar in August 2002—i.e., 4-5 years before the original first generation 15-inch MacBook Pro was released. If so, then you are actually using Mac OS X v10.7 (Lion) and the minimum system requirement for the current version of GoPro Studio (v2.5.3) is Mac OS X v10.8 (Mountain Lion) as per the GoPro Studio System Requirements web page. In any case, whether you are using Puma or Lion as your operating system, it is incompatible with the current version of GoPro Studio and it is the Mac operating system that must be updated which, in turn, will upgrade the system embedded QuickTime support structures.

  • Itunes in windows fails to play Shared Library's Video!!!

Hello, I'm not sure if this is a bug but I have thoroughly tested it in both Vista and XP.
If I share my Itunes' Library and access it from another PC (vista or XP tested), it can list the tvshows/movies/podcasts just fine, but when I play it, nothing happens. I see some network activity for brief 3-4 seconsd and then it stops.
The videos were imported into itunes on the macbook pro just fine (meaning the encoding is fine, MP4) and when I copied those videos file manually over to the PCs, the play fine too. Even if I share them over the network through SMB, they play fine streaming. They only fail when I play them through itunes' shared library.
95% of the videos fail, except for a few that I noticed and have not yet figured out a pattern. Videos that seems to work are 1) the downloaded guided tour video of iLife08 2) the mac tips podcasts from apple 3) a movie I converted using Quicktime into MP4 from divx
    Any ideas?

This may indeed be the Windows version of iTunes (and QuickTime) being fussier than the Mac version.
However I did in Windows XP, take a video that would not work, export it using QuickTime Pro (on Windows) with the Prepare for Streaming option ticked, and the resulting video did then work, also taking the same original video that did not work and in iTunes 7.4.3 (on Windows) and converting it to AppleTV format, also produced a version that then did work for iTunes Sharing.
A video can be in MPEG4 format (or H.264) and meet the Apple specifications for iPod or Apple TV resolution, but it is quite possible it may not have been 'prepared for streaming'.
There have been similar reports from FrontRow (in Mac OS X) users accessing videos from an iTunes Share and having problems (typically very poor performance) and when they used the prepare for streaming option the problems went away.

  • Distortion through itunes playback

I am getting a distorted sound on listening to Itunes on my PC. Downloading to my Ipod is fine, listening to a CD is fine , listening via Windows Media or Real Player is OK.
This began just 3 weeks ago but had been fine the last couple of years. I'm using the latest version of ITunes.
Is it my PC or is there a fault with the settings of my Itunes?

You may want to check your soundcard output in QuickTime. See this post for directions on the process: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa;jsessionid=aXxb7IZbMDPmI_4E?messageID=814726&ft=y&#814726

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your particular sound card, and make sure you have the latest DirectX installed. Any of these could also cause this problem without QuickTime being the culprit.

  • ITunes causing music to skip

Hello everyone. Lately, after using iTunes for a few hours the music starts skipping making the computer run choppy. It also skips the mouse and causes programs to timeout. I'm running the latest version of iTunes. I have no spyware, viruses or hijacks. Any idea on what could be the problem?
I have also defragmented the hard drive and updated the audio driver.

  • Import of PAL DV AVI fails

    Hello forum,
I have DV AVIs which were captured on a Windows XP PC with the Miro DV500 capture card (with OpenDML option, PAL format, interlaced). When trying to import a given AVI file into Final Cut Pro X 10.0.1 (latest available update) I get an error message:
"No importable media - None of the selected files or folders could be imported. Change your selection and try again"
(I have the german version, so the above is just a rough translation)
I tried also with unchecking all import dialog checkboxes, to no avail. The same import failure happens on an iMac running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and FCP X 10.0.1 (latest update) and on a MacBook Pro running 10.7.1 Lion with the original FCP X 10.0.
I copied the files onto the Mac harddisk. The size is nothing extraordinary, the smallest file is just about 172 MBytes.
The files import just fine into my Final Cut Express 4.0 version! They also play fine with QuickTime or any other application such as VLC on my Mac.
I found this entry here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3152268?start=0&tstart=0 which talks about (large) MJPEG AVIS from a Pentax K-7 camera. The same workaround described there works with my DV AVI files as well: I open the AVI with Quick Time 7 Player (on my Snow Leopard), "Save as" and then "Save as reference" ("Als Referenz sichern" in my german QT). This produces a very small *.mov file which I then can import into FCP X!
(Unfortunatelly I haven't figured out yet how that works on Lion with QT 10.1, since the "Save as" has gone (bummer!) and the Export doesn't seem to provide a "Save as reference" anymore - unlike the original post claims: "...and save the file as a movie with the media in the same format." - how?)
Anyone else is having trouble importing DV AVIs into FCP X?

Now, Tom and Ron, you two seem to be very on the bright side of life: just accepting the fact that there are bugs and just put up with them by "Thinking different" - or you're just accepting the fact that "You're holding it wrong" or whatever.
It's funny, this seems to be a very common attitude among some Apple "lovers".
@Tom: Now your statement is wrong in at least a couple of things: first DV AVI actually is on the list of supported import formats. Second, "no previous version did" is clearly disproven by the very fact that even FCP Express 4 is able to import this very same AVI clip. Let alone QuickTime being able to play it and iMovie also imports it just fine.
Now I cannot talk about FCP before FCP X as I have never used those, but FCP Express being a downsized version of the very same product  and being able to import DV AVI I can't believe FCP would not.
Finally your statement that the new "AV Foundation" doesn't import (DV) AVI clips is also wrong: again as disproven by the fact that the very same DV video clip, with a modified/corrected AVI header by MPEG StreamClip (a simple "Save-As" does it!), is successfully imported into FCP X!
So yes, it's most probably an AVI header bug, and that bug is in the new AV Foundation.
And there's something else you get confused about: AVI is NOT a video format! It is a container! So even if that is not the native (or preferred) container for FCP X there would be absolutely no reason why FCP X should do any other thing than decompress the format (DV in this case, which is a very common format!) and convert it to my target format (H264 or whatever, and into whatever container I would choose, say MP4). There would be absolutely no rendering involved (assuming off ourse that the only editing would be cuts and no fades or the like), except maybe converting DV into the "native" format which would be used internally. But that would be comparable effort to converting any other format into the FCP internal format. So I don't see your "endlessly rendering in FCP" (compared to when I would import say a DV video clip in a QuickTime container).
And to Tom: No, this is not a viable solution for me to use a converter to work around a bug! And I don't understand why you insist on your suggestion being a genuine solution, as I already wrote in the first 3 posts or so that I figured out that myself already (and actually without converting to any "FCPX codec" - whatever that would be, but I figure you mean something like "ProRes 422"). But it's just no fun to first copy hours of digitised VHS tapes into almost identical files, just to be able to import them! Yes, it would work, yes I might even have to revert to that "solution" - but I still consider it not a real solution.
And again, I am not saying that Apple cares enough about eventually fixing that issue, but they did get in contact in me after me sending an issue. Also just recently after I complained that 10.0.2 did not fix it (uh well, yes, with no concrete indications of whether that would get fixed, just along the lines like "I have to get in contact with our engineers again")...
So no, 10.0.2 did not fix it - so I'm still holding my breath...
Thanks anyway for your help so far - just don't try to convince me of what I'm trying to do is wrong (as I get the feeling).
    Cheers, Oliver

  • I am sure Apple is aware of this problem

but does anybody know how I can get this Itunes on my computer? it says it can't run because of Quicktime being a earlier version and it needs a new version..I have NEVER had this problem with an upgrade before...and now I am afraid I uninstalled and reinstalled so much I lost all my stuff that was on Itunes? any suggestions?

So long as you don't touch the Apple Computer folder in the hidden system folder called Application Data and you don't touch the iTunes folder in the My Music folder, you can uninstall Quicktime+iTunes without worries of losing any settings or files. Use the Add/Remove control panel, and you'll be safe.
In fact uninstalling, not updating, is good housekeeping, especially with programs as complex as Quicktime+iTunes. I wonder what percentage of the trouble reported in this forum comes from people installing iTunes updates on top of themselves. Better to uninstall Quicktime, uninstall iTunes, restart Windows, and finally install the latest versions fresh.

  • QT 7.4.5 - Another Version of QT without SWF Support

With every new version of Quicktime I hope for Apple to reinstate the ability to play SWFs. Not because it is the only way to view SWFs, but because without Quicktime being able to play SWFs, KEYNOTE cannot play SWFs.
My company bought 12 copies of Keynote to show our portfolio. It was working great up until the QT 7.3.1 update which removed the ability to play SWFs in Keynote, rendering Keynote pretty much useless to us and our 12 licenses of Keynote. Will Apple bring this feature back? Or will a 3rd party solution be built? It's evident at this point that Apple has no intention of bringing this functionality back. I have found no statement from Apple regarding how they have rendered Keynote useless to those of us who wish to show SWFs. Their silence on the issue pretty much tells me they could care less.
    I'm really frustrated.
    -Kirk

We actually have one of the 12 machines with 7.2 on it. The problem is that it is the ONLY machine that will allow us to import SWFs. You cannot import SWFs on the other machines. It is also my boss' machine, so we have to keep asking him to get off his laptop to update the flash stuff. Plus, the idea was that we would 3-4 laptops with Keynote ready for presenting. Now we have one.
I'm aware that we can reinstall the OS to get back 7.2 (it is the ONLY way to go back to 7.2) I was on the phone with Apple for over an hour trying everything else possible till we realized that QT is so woven into the OS there is no other way.
I wish Apple would just pony up the dough so that Keynote and other software(I saw a posting from a teacher saying one of his apps lost SWFs too) work they way they were meant to.

  • Surprisingly Poor Performance

I am trying to decide whether to purchase the Adobe Production Premium CS6 Suite for either Windows or Mac. I have been testing both out with trials and I have to say that I am very surprised at the performance difference between the two. To be totally fair, my Windows PC has better specs than the MacBook Pro I am testing with, however, the disparity I am seeing cannot be attributed to hardware alone.
The main issue I am having with the MacBook Pro is how long it takes, after opening a project, for my video files to become available and subsequently scrub-able. I have the exact same project loaded in both systems and it takes 9 seconds to reach a total working state in Windows and a full minute more on the MacBook (1:08). It takes additional time on the MacBook before I can scrub through my timeline and get the video to update in realtime. Is this a common issue on the Mac version of Premiere Pro? At this point I can't even imagine going with the suite on OS X.
All apps and operating systems are fully updated.
    System specs: MacBook Pro MD103LL/A

    Video: MPEG-4 AVC (High 4.0) 12.1Mbps, 1920x1080p 30fps
    Audio: 216Kbps, 48Khz, 2 channel, AAC
I know the specs favor the Windows PC, but the different in generating the preview file seems silly. Just be be clear what I am talking about, when I open my Premiere Pro project the Program preview will display "Media Pending" for over a minute before it shows even a frame. It then takes an additional 30-40 seconds before I can scrub through in real time. On the Windows PC this whole process takes 9 seconds.
Is this really because of the hardware differences or does the Mac version of Premiere Pro really perform this poorly compared to the Windows version? Is there a setting I don't have right on the Mac that will improve this? I have Googled the issue and found a few things the toggle, but none of them has any effect on my issue.
I'm look for both help and information on this. I want to go with Mac because I use Motion and Garageband, but cannot justify the purchase based on the performance I am getting.

Is QuickTime installed on your Windows computer? If not, that can create the problems you describe. You can also try the things suggested in the following FAQ: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4626663#4626663
As I understand it, your performance issue on Mac might be realted to QuickTime being only 32 bit capable.
