QuickTime broken?

Hi,
I installed leopard about a month ago and had no problems viewing anything with QuickTime. Now it seems the QuickTime engine is completely broken. When I try to load any kind of quicktime file in Safari, Safari freezes, then I get the beach ball. Also, all those little previews of files in the finder? ALL of the quicktime files don't show me the preview, only the icon. And when I attempt to open one, QT opens but there are no windows and I get the beach ball. Same for firefox, iTunes and IE.
Can anyone help me?

It appears the something like that happened to mine when upgrading to 10.5.... However, nothing is freezing up... yet.

  • Clip Notes + Streaming QuickTime = broken?

I guess this is more of an AME or Reader issue, but figure that PPro users are the most common users of Clip Notes...
I've tried exporting a Clip Notes PDF with streaming QuickTime video from both PPro CS3 + AME, PPro CS4 + AME, and standalone AME CS4, and all of them report an error: "Acrobat has encountered an error while playing this media clip:"
If I use QT but select to embed the file, it works fine. If I use WMV, either embedded or streamed, it works fine. I have confirmed that I'm setting the URL correctly in the Clip Notes settings. The QT spit out by the Clip Notes export plays fine in QT Player, so I know the video itself isn't broken. I'm attempting to play/view these using Reader 8.1.3.
Obviously, the solution would be to not use QT, or to at least embed it, but it's a much larger file than can be comfortably sent to my client (who isn't that technologically savvy). I like the QT option because of the ability to easily navigate/rewind the video.
Anyone else experiencing issues with Clip Notes and streaming QuickTime?

    I'm using Vista 64.
I was having the same problem with the transport controls not showing up.
I set AcroRd32.exe to run in XP mode and that fixed the problem with the embedded movie file.
    Transport controls show up.
    Thanks.
I hoped that would also fix the QT streaming problem.
However, if I select "Streaming" and upload it to my server then when the Clip Notes tries to play the file it says "
This happened also before I set AcroRd32 to XP mode.
No problem with "Clip Notes Windows Media" format.  It uploads and plays fine.
The .mov file is on the server.   I can play it fine in a browser.
Any ideas why Adobe Reader won't play a streaming .mov file in Clip Notes, but will play a streaming .wmv file?
You really need to use QT so you can scrub the timeline.
.wmv files don't let you scrub!
Adobe why haven't you after all these years made Clip Notes use flash?
If you did it would truly be cross-platform.
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime broken after 7.1.5 update

After updating to 7.1.5, if I go to a Quicktime link, say at the Apple movie trailers, the playback control bar pops up in the center of where the movie image should be, and the movie never starts to download.
Any ideas on how to fix? Dumping the plist file was all I've tried.

    tom

I just came across this item in another discussion group on the same topic as this one: "7.1.6 broke playback." And the suggestion worked!
Here's the note from "Mac Fan In a PC World."
I am experiencing this same problem with 7.1.6 ...
video freezes audio continues to play in iTunes,
QuickTime Player, and the preview pane in the finder.
However, I can drag the video file into a stickie
note of all things and it plays!
So this seemed rather strange. Figured I'd try it anyway since I've been trying to figure this QT issue for a few days. I've tried a number of previous suggestions including trashing Library files, updating permissions, reinstalling the QT update, even reinstalled the OS 10.4.9 update directly from the Apple web site.
Launched the Stickie program and then relaunched Safari. Went to the Apple QT movie trailer page and ran a trailer...and it worked!! Ran without any freeze-up or audio problem.
I then closed the Stickie program and have run 5 different movie trailers and all of them have worked without any problems! Is that really odd or what?
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when I reboot this "fix" really sticks.

  • New Quicktime broken?

I watched the Nano event on my iBook G3/600 fine. Smooth, consistent and no problems. The new special event (which I'm attemppting to watch with the new QT7) is all choppy and unwatchable.
I also notice that this is happening on the new music videos I bought from iTunes, so I know it's not a connectivity issue. Is the new QT only G5 compatible? Does Apple really think that we're all that rich that we'll replace our G3s and G4s just to watch their videos? Ick.

When you say you "need" a 500 MHz processor for iTunes 6 or QuickTime 7, do you mean it is a minimum "absolute" requirement or a minimum "suggested" requirement? I recently purchased an iPod video (who hasn't?) and need (absolutely) to upgrade my OS to OS X 10.3.9 (minimum) to take advantage of video features. However, will it work on a Mac with a 400 MHz processor (even if only s l o w l y)?

However, your embed src does not work.
I can view your .mp3 using the full url

I even tried putting your url into an embed src on my site and it still doesn't work.
I have many embed src that works just fine. Can't figure out why yours doesn't.
For some reason, it doesn't display your url when it is embedded.

  • Quick time works for one user but not for another

I transferred my user info from my old computer to my son's newer computer. My old computer was running 10.3x and quicktime wasn't working. The genius bar folks couldn't figure out how to fix it. (All quicktime files come up with the logo with question mark.)
New computer (newer) is running 10.4. Stuff all transferred fine. Problem transferred too.
Old user signs in, quicktime works fine. I sign in, quicktime broken.
How do I figure this out?

Inside your hard drive, in the Users folder should be your user home folder (with your account name.) Within that folder is a folder called Library... open that and look for a QuickTime folder within, pull that QuickTime folder out to the Desktop. Do the same for Internet Plug-ins. Then, open Preferences and pull out com.apple.quicktime... (all of them) and the QuickTime Preferences file.
Then log out (Apple menu) and back in (or restart) and try again!

  • Quicktime (& YouTube & Monkey mag) all broken all of a sudden

Hi, I have an iMac 20" Intel, running OSX 10.4.9. Yesterday everything seemed fine with my Mac, but today Quicktime (and pretty much any embedded video playing within Safari) has broken. The only difference I can think of between then & now is that I installed Delibar, the toolbar menu system for accessing del.icio.us bookmarks, and the Social Bookmarks plugin for QuickSilver, which may or may not be a red herring.
When I try to view files on YouTube or in Monkey Magazine (a weekly men's mag along the lines of Maxim or FHM, published online using a flash-based reader called Cerosmedia) the videos play for a couple of seconds without any sound, then freeze - no more gets downloaded or played. Returning the video to the start & waiting doesn't fix it as it used to. Strangely I can still play the .AVIs I took of my son in his school play in Quicktime.
As a precaution I got rid of QuickTimePlayer.app & reinstalled from a .dmg I downloaded fresh from Apple. I did the same with Flip4Mac too. No difference. Also, when I open up QuickTime, it doesn't play the intro vids, it just skips over them to the start page & then when you click on a video link it tells you An Error Occurred (well, yes, bud what kind of error?) and gives a reference number which varies each time the error happens (once per attempt to open a video), which I assume it to record the incident rather than to describe its cause...
Can anyone tell me, how does one completely rip out and reinstall all of QuickTime and all of Flip4Mac so that when it's reinstalled it'll copy all files to your HD without leaving any old ones intact? Or is there an easier solution?
I'm a bit of a Mac newbie having only had them since a year or so ago (love them btw) but I'm quite comfortable dealing with Unix.

    Apple Discussions!
Did you repair permissions and/or restart after you installed Delibar & the Social Bookmarks plugin for QuickSilver?
Also, see Knowledge Base Article KB article - No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4)
Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it (maybe open a GarageBand document) and then quit out of the application.
If none of the above works please post back.

  • 10.6.8 update has broken quicktime 7 codecs

    Hi there
It seems that the 10.6.8 update has broken the codecs that quicktime 7 uses.
We have users here that need to use quicktime 7 pro to export movs etc, and since the update, they cannot play (so far that we have found) movs that are using the photo-jpeg decompressor.
We're using the version from the optional installs package form the dvd.
We've been able to work around this by copying (from a 10.6.7 install) the following folders, over the top of the 10.6.8 image.
    /System/Library/QuickTime
    /System/Library/QuickTimaJava
    /System/Library/Frameworks/QuickTime.framework
    /Library/QuickTime
While ive tried to single out which files are affected, it seems copying one of these folders at a time hasnt fixed the problem. Only when (at least) all the /System folders are copied over, then we can start playing the movs that have the broken codecs.
Is this something Apple is aware of? Is there an word of a fix for this? I also hear that optical audio is broken as part of the update - which the solution has been to recopy the kext file back from an older system.
10.6.7 was a show stopper for us - because of the NFS permission problems.. (but QT7 worked)
and now 10.6.8 is a show stopper for us, because QT7 is now broken, but the NFS problems are resolved.
I dont want to have to rebuild our workstations back to 10.6.6 as we had other issues that was fixed with 10.6.7..
    Any ideas anyone? Apple dev's?
    Cheers

i think ive narrowed it down to a single file...
On my 10.6.8 laptop - with the stock QT files... the affected movs wouldnt play...
I copy this file from a 10.6.7 machine...
    /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeComponents.component/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime Components
And i can play the files again...

  • Itunes 7.5 won't run because QuickTime 7.3 is broken

During installation of itunes you will get an error saying "Itunes cannot run because some of it's required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes". The reason is because QuickTime 7.3 is broken. You can check by opening QTInfo.exe in the quicktime folder and it will say QuickTime is not installed. What you can do is downgrade to QuickTime 7.2. Get it at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime72forwindows.html. iTunes 7.5 will run fine with it.

    Hi,
Thank you. Had to perform the following steps 'IN ORDER' to get 7.5 to work. Formerly was running iTunes 7.3.1 'without' incident.
    1) Install iTunes 7.5. Quick Time 7.3 installs at same time. When error message occurs, click OK and finish installation.
    2) Go to 'control panel' and remove 'Quick Time 7.3'
    3) Install Quick Time '7.2.
    4) Re-boot system and launch iTunes 7.5. How 'bout that. It works !!
    Best Regards, DE

  • Why doesn't the Quicktime site have an easy way to report broken links?

Perhaps Apple thinks this site is perfect?
The link to 'The heart is deceitful above all things' has been down for DAYS -- surely something the producers of that movie would not be happy about??
There's no simple way (that I can see) to report such a broken link - just for the heck of it I spent 20 minutes looking for a way to report this minor glitch, and there doesn't seem to be one (or I'm missing the obvious).
Maybe someone who can do something will read this!

Thanks very much for the link!
...but where is the "link to the link" on the Quicktime site.... if I didn't know where to look for this, how would I find out about it, or realize that this is the way to report a simple broken link?
Is this bad site design or am I just plain blind!?
I'm just frustrated that the site doesn't have a simple way to report this (I've seen similar broken links before on the Movie site, and they often persist for days). If you hadn't helped me out I don't think I would have figured out how to do this!

  • Broken Codec in new versions of QuickTime?

Broken Codec in new QT upgrades?
Why is it that my QuickTime video files:
(Dimensions 720x480, Codec DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Integer Big Endian)
playback crystal clear when using QT 7.0.4,
but when I playback these same files using QT 7.1.6 or QT 7.3.1 or the latest QT 7.4 ……the video is grainy, fuzzy, pixilated, weird shadows move through the video…..simply terrible! Audio is OK.
Did something get “broken” when QT was upgraded through all the new versions?
These same videos play just fine using StreamClip or FC Express 3.0.1 and my old reliable QT 7.0.4
What is happening here? I hope the forum experts weigh in on this one.
    Thanks in advance,
    BoBo

    Mockerman and Others....
Not yet ready to completely embrace the latest and greatest of upgrades and updates, ....I have set up Leopard 10.5.2 and QuickTime 7.4.1 on an external hard drive.
When I play my old QT video clips, the results are now fine, crystal clear the way they used to look when I use Tiger 10.4.5 and QT 7.0.4
I am now happy, and more encouraged to embrace the latest and greatest. Try this combination, and hopefully your videos will also come back to life.
By the way, my QT videos are formatted in DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720x480, Integer (Big Endian).
    Hope this all helps you,

  • Broken QuickTime Symbol

    Broken Symbol!What does that mean?
My QuickTime player stopped working on all sites.
I just keep getting the symbol to come up and then it changes to a broken symbol, with the right hand corner looking like it has a rip in it.I tryed downloading the new version, but it does the same thing.
can anyone help me?It worked fine up until a month or so ago.

In QT settings>Browser>Miscellaneous-Miscellaneous file formats try unchecking Flash Media. The sites you are going to could be using Macromedia Flash Player 8.

  • Quicktime X broken after security and Safari updates.

Ran software update yesterday and updated Safari to 5.1.1 and got the latest security update. Now Quicktime X is broken. Still have the app but the icon is missing and it won't start. My old QT 7 still seems to work fine. Tried repairing permissions and restarting several times. Any other ideas? Wish they would just allow us to download and install QT X...

Sorry to say but this did not work for me. I was able to find an installation of QTP 7.6.4 (which still has the Quicktime Preferences menu option). However, I was not able to install the older version of QTP even after trashing QTP app, and its associated preference files and rebooting my MacBook Pro. The installation program displayed a message that a new version of Quicktime was detected and would not allow me to continue the installation of the previous version. I then found a program called Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ that allowed me to do the installation.
My reference movies are now behaving as they should. Unquestionably there is a problem with Quicktime Player 7.6.6 which Apple really should address right away.
BTW, after doing this, my Pro key seems to be intact. I just purchase Final Cut Studio upgrade. I guess I leave QT 7.6.4 and ignore software updates fopr Quicktime until I see 7.6.8.
Unfortunately, I'll have a difficult time explaining this to my clients. In effect, this screw up by Apple makes it inadvisable for me to provide reference movies with alternates for my clients.

  • Weird colours with QuickTime sources, broken preview renders & crash at exit (CS4)

    Hi erveryone,
I have a strange problem in Premiere Pro CS4: Allmost all QuickTime MOV that I put in the timeline show weird, broken colours. At first I thought this was a problem with a specific codec, but I have now tried several codecs and pretty much every one shows up equally broken. The only codec that seems to work fine is the one that my Canon EOS 550D produces (1080p, H.264 I believe), but that one does not play smoothly (not that I would expect it to do on my machine). Strangely, H.264 in lower resolutions fails again. Other containers seem to be unaffected. Here is a screenshot of the effect:
Also, my preview renders (when rendering the effecs on the timeline) are similarly broken. They behave a bit erratically. Sometimes they are just black, showing nothing and sometimes they show a still frame of one of the previously viewed videos. Colours are messed up in a similar way, so I suspect a connection. Here is the same clip from the screenshow above, preview-rendered:
Also, upon exiting Premiere, it usually crashes. This is less of a problem, but still very weird behaviour.
Any ideas how I could solve this?
Infos about my system which might be of relevance:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (education version)
Windows Vista 32bit (SP2, all current updates installed)
    4GB RAM
    Intel Core2 Duo
ATI X1300 Pro  256MB (with newest available driver)
    QuickTime 7.6.6
The system has been freshly installed (from factory image - hence the older OS) so no malware or anything similar should mess anything up. Only software installed except the Creative Suite is Google Chrome.
On my laptop (Win7 64bit, Intel i5, no separate graphics card, same QT version) none of these problems appear.
    Greetings,
       Florian

I think I found the solution. Some further digging revealed that I did not have as previously assumed the latest driver for my graphics card installed. I was mislead because the manufacturer (Dell) did provide some updates, but not all of them (none in the past two years to be exact). I grabbed the newest driver kit from the ATI website and installed it. Strangely, the installer produced several errors and I get another error message at startup, but I think only the control software was affected and not the driver itself.
After some first tests, QuickTime movies behave as expected, the preview renders are working again and the crashes on exit are also gone. Yay!
Strange how much trouble a driver which is otherwise working perfectly can cause.
