Quicktime by Flip4Mac

I am trying to listen to xm radio online. The site is telling me that I must download the Windows Media Components for Quicktime by Flip4Mac. Has anyone done this? Is it safe to install. Anything by Windows makes me nervous.

Don't edit the wmv in fcp...convert the wvm to what ever your editing codec is in FCP. Your making things worse (on yourself) by editing in what ever codec the wvm files are...
I convert a lot of second hand video files with the Apple Intermediate Codec to edit in FCP. I set up FCP to that codec (Apple Intermediate Codec ) and to what ever else the video file properties are...then there no rendering.
Unless you apply a filter or something else to the video clip (in FCP). Then you have to render that portion of the video clip, goes without saying.
I use Mpeg-Streamclip to convert files to another codec. It's fast, free and a topnotch converting program. There is all so a batch converter too, save time.

  • Quicktime or Flip4Mac or both?

    I want to convert Mac QT .mov file to a format that can be viewed on a Windows PC. Which format is easier to work with and yeilds good to excellent viewing results on the Windows side. Also, do I need Quicktime Pro, Flip4Mac or both...or can I just use the Export .avi and/or WMV option in iMovie? Sorry, but as you can see, I'm confused. I plan to burn the final file format to a CD for Windows user to view.
    THANKS!!!

    Sooo, please correct me if I'm wrong. It seems from what you said, that the easiest way for me to send a Mac QT .mov file to be viewed by a Windows user via Windows Media Player (or even PowerPoint) is to use Flip4Mac Studio to convert my QT .mov to a .wmv file?
    Not quite. What I'm saying is, if I send a single file to everyone in my family, the .wmv file is the only one everyone can play. I personally prefer the H.264 codec, but it is too restrictive in terms of both player and platform requirements for everyone in my family. On the other hand, the .avi file container is simply too old and has too many possible codec configurations to satisfy everyone at any given time. If all your viewers have QT 6 or 7 Players, then you can probably use the MPEG-4/AAC format to provide viewable files of reasonable size and quality directly from iMovie -- especially if they are to be delivered by server directly to their players via either the "Open URL" or as reference .qtl files which are easily e-mailed.
    So just forget QTPro, iMovie, etc..?
    QT Pro is the simplest work flow since it can open many different QT compatible A/V formats. On the other hand, there is no need to purchase QT Pro if you already have access to QT tools/components from within iMovie. (The .wmp codec is accessable from within iMovie.) The only major drawback here is having to import/convert files for use with iMovie. If you are using a DV file source, then this isn't really a problem. If, however, you are using other file formats as your source (e.g., "muxed" MPEG), then you must first convert these formats to DV files for use in iMovie which requires the QT MPEG-2 component and/or a third party MPEG based application.

  • Quicktime - ASF - Flip4Mac - OSStatus error -19160

    Hello. I was previously unable to play any ASF programmes on Quicktime until I downloaded Flip4Mac version 2.2.11.1 a month ago. More recently I downloaded the recommended Mac Updates (possibly also including one for Quicktime, but my Installation log doesn't seem to indicate so) and now I am unable to run any programme on Quicktime. There is a message saying "Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error-19160). Anyone have any suggestions? I quite urgently need to access a streaming file for work.

    Try posting in the QuickTime for Mac forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the QuickTime for Windows forum.

  • Windows Media Components for Quicktime by Flip4Mac 2.2.2.3

    5-17-09 1 pm Eastern U.S.A.
    Hello to everybody.
    After checking the Flip4Mac Update area, it stated that the version that had been working fine since Nov. 08 was outdated and would I like to update to the newer version 2.2.2.3, I first investigated the System Requirements.
    All looked good.
    I have MAC OS X 10.3.9 and 7.5 Quicktime Pro.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=915D874D-D747-4180-A400 -5F06B1B5E559&displaylang=en#Requirements
    After downloading and installing, I went to System Preferences to click on the Icon Flip4Mac had placed there the first time last year, which I thought then was really cool, I tried to open Flip4Mac ... System Preferences crashed!
    After investigating the other icons, accounts, security, etc., I relaxed! All worked
    Any ideas?
    Below is the original website.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

    Well, I found a temporary fix (while Flip4Mac figures out why they state their updates WILL work correctly with the running systems they say will...10.3.9 and Quicktime Pro 7.5, but don't.)
    FROM FINDER: REMOVE EVERYTHING WINDOWS MEDIA AND FLIP4MAC.
    DO A DISK UTILITY PERMISSIONS REPAIR AND A RESTART.
    GO TO THIS APPLE PAGE: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flip4macwmvstudiopro.html AND DOWNLOAD 2.1.2.72
    (my old version was 2.1.1.11)
    DO ANOTHER DISK PERMISSIONS AND RESTART.
    ...THEN THOSE WHO HAD A CRASHING SYSTEM PREFERENCES OR BROWSER WITH NO W.M.V.PLAYER AT ALL, HAVE SOMETHING.
    Please note, I did try to put the new 2.2.2.3 over this upgrade 2.1.2.72 from what I had before 2.1.1.11 thinking there sometimes is a "sequence of events" involved,
    but it DID NOT WORK.
    2.2.2.3 DOES NOT WORK.
    I hope that I have helped someone with this post.
    **Please Mr. Klaus, I would rather you not reply to my literature.**
    Thanks and God Bless.

  • Versions of QuickTime and Flip4Mac?

    Good morning.
    I recently upgraded to 10.5.8.
    I have been unable to use .wmv files since then.
    What is the optimum version of Flip4Mac for use with 10.5.8 and QuickTime in a PowerPC Mac?
    Thanks for your time!

    Thanks for your reply.
    Both versions work with PowerPC processors?

  • Quicktime X & Flip4Mac Installed, Not functioning on IMAC bought in August

    Every video that is for Quicktime will not play (Older versions?).
    Message says; "No Quicktime Player Loaded" on my IMAC.
    Tried updating and loading older version of quicktime with no success.
    This is true b4 Snow Leopard as well as after loading Snow Leopard.
    This is my first MAC, help me out here, Please!
    I have been bragging how new and fantastic world MAC is.

    Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and wait for it to mount on your Desktop.
    Run the "Optional Installs" package and you'll see the QuickTime Player install option.
    Flip4Mac is not yet compatible with QuickTime X (or Snow Leopard) but their Site does offer a "beta" download for 10.6.1 users.

  • .wmv file play like streaming files in Quicktime.

    I have downloaded some .wmv files, and tried to play them in both Version 10 and the Quicktime 7 Pro utility. I'm on an iMac using operating system 10.6.5 and I have flip4mac installed. The movies open, but seem to be streaming from the internet, and cannot be fast forwarded or edited. I have looked in the Quicktime and flip4mac preferences, but there doesn't seem to be any settings that address this. Help!
    Peter

    The movies open, but seem to be streaming from the internet, and cannot be fast forwarded or edited.
    If by this you mean the file opens and the playhead starts moving but the "progress bar" is still cacheing data, then this is normal if the data in in an WMV file container. QT has to partially decompress the data for playback/use. If you want to avoid thios delay, you can save the data in its partially decompressed format to an MOV file but it will take up more hard drive space than the WMV file version. If you allow the file to decompress or load the MOV version and you still can't "scrub" or FF the playhead, then you may have a problem. As to editing/converting the file, as Limnos points out, the free Flip4Mac "Playback" component does not allow you to do any real editing or converting of the content and you would have to purchase one of the decoder, bidirectional or advanced codec packages to do this.

  • QuickTime Live Broadcast issues.

    After upgrading to 802.11n, I have had a problem watching Live QuickTime broadcasts in both wired and wireless modes. Video / audio drops out constantly and what video I do get, is severely pixelated and is totaly unusable.
    I have re-installed my 802.11g unit and the problem goes away. I have never had this problem untill I replaced my AirPort Extreme "g".
    I have tried port mapping QuickTime Server with no change.
    I have tried everything I can think of with no luck. Am I the only one with this problem? Did I miss a setting somewhere? How is this problem corrected?
    Thank you all for your assistance.

    i have the same problem ... and earlier posts here haven't yielded any solutions. See:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4535843&#4535843
    btw: the same computer works fine at the local Apple Store (which uses the 802.11n Extreme) ... but not with the 802.11n Extreme at my home. The Apple Store folks say that aside from assigning specific channels, they have only "default" settings. I tried changing my channel to something other than Automatic ... but it doesn't help.
    Since the earlier post - I've set-up the older 802.11g unit and got screen captures of all the settings. Then went back to the 802.11n and ensured that the set-up of the two units are identical (to the extent there is 1-to-1 correspondence).
    also: two of my systems also have the latest releases of Quicktime and Flip4Mac. They have problems of their own! (See their discussion forums). But my older iBook has the same software that has been used without issues for the past several months. The only "new" item in the system is the new 802.11n base station.

    why can't i play .wmv file in quicktime even after i download codec from windows? can anyone help me wit this please!!!!!

    Have you done the obvious things to try to fix it: quit Quicktime then start it back up again, log out then back in, reboot.
    Edit: Just read one of your later posts. If VLC won't play it, this is unrelated to Quicktime and Flip4Mac. Are you sure these wmv files are okay?

  • Forcing link to open in Quicktime instead of VLC

    Hi,
    The page www.railaway.tv has its video in WMV format, which stream can be read by QuickTime with Flip4Mac. But unfortunately they make the links with a Flash button, so I can not see (and copy) the link and paste it in QuickTime. When I click on the link in Safari, it will launch VLC, which can not read it. When I remove VLC from my Mac, it will open Windows Media Player, which can not read it (and I can not save the movie from WMP). When I remove WMP, Safari gives me an error that it can not open the link. But it's proven that QT can! Someone gave me a link to one of the clips on the site, and pasting it in QT works. How can I force Safari to open the file in QT?
    This is the direct link to one film:
    mms://193.242.108.40/watchingme4od/europe/switzerland_winter.wmv
    And no, selecting a .wmv movie in the Finder, get Info and change all wmv files to open in QT doesn't work. It only works then for full movie files, not for mms links.
    Where can I change the file type to open in QT. Which actually is the file type of the link, as it is not a windows movie (yet). It's a stream.

    Hi,
    This is server side code , you should write in your C# code behind method for Click event of Link Button .
    - Use 1st part code in your button event handler method. (Replace <username> with current user name), best way is to find the crome.exe location at your dev machine , and paste the path here -
    process.StartInfo.FileName = @""; , default location is in user's appdata folder. Test the code.
    - If the above code works , and if your crome.exe is in user's appdata folder , then you will need to find dynamic location of AppData folder for every user. That means the path should not be hard coded. The 2nd part of the code is an hint for how you can
    find the appdata path in C#. Something like this
    //var cromePath = @"C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\chrome.exe";
    var cromePath = Path.Combine(Environment.GetFolderPath(
    Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData), "\Local\Google\Chrome\chrome.exe");
    using (var process = new Process())
    process.StartInfo.FileName = cromePath;
    process.StartInfo.Arguments = "your url";
    process.Start();
    So the step will be
    - First try a direct call to crome,
    var cromePath = @"crome.exe";
    - if it not works , then try with hardcoded path of crome.exe from your dev machine for current user -
    var cromePath = @"C:\Users\<currentUserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\chrome.exe";
    - And if this work , then try it with dynamic path for any user, find appdata folder location through code
    var cromePath = Path.Combine(Environment.GetFolderPath(
    Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData), "\Local\Google\Chrome\chrome.exe");
    Hope this will help, if you are a C# developer then you can easily understand  the concept.
    Thanks

  • WMA Streams / Flip4Mac and iTunes?

    Hi,
    I just bought QuickTime Pro and Flip4Mac Player Pro. I'd like to listen to WMA streams in iTunes and Front Row.
    The issue: The instructions tell to open the WMA stream with Open URL in QuickTime and create a .mov file with Save or Save As. But this doesn't work, Save / Save As is gray, I can't click it, although I purchased the Pro versions of QuickTime and Flip4Mac Player.
    Thanks for any hints,
    Alex

    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
    "But since then, QT and iTunes won't open."
    Are you saying when you click on QT & iTunes app and/or alias the apps do not open? Are you getting any error messages? If so, what do they say?
    Did you repair permissions & restart after updating the above?

  • Quicktime Error 2002

    When I try to compress a file from FCP5 to WMV it fails and I get a Quicktime Error message 2002. Does anyone know what that means and what I am doing wrong? Thanks. Ric

    This is happening to me as well. I just upgraded my QT version to the latest one, 7.4.5 and now I can't encode anything using Flip4Mac's WMV encoder through Compressor. I get the exact same QuickTime -2002 error. It's like the codec isn't even installed or something, because the error is instant. It's not like it gets going and then quits out in the middle.
    I've tried a full clean re-install of Compressor, QuickTime and Flip4Mac and I still get this error. Does anyone out there have any ideas?

  • Windows Media Player vs. Flip4Mac

    I am trying to watch a news clip on the Internet - I have Quicktime and Flip4Mac and the website says that they don't support either. I have to have Microsoft Media Player - so I tried downloading the newest version (9) and I still can't get the video to play.
    Any ideas? If it helps the station/website is http://www.wdbj7.com
    I can always watch it at work on my PC but it irks me that I can't figure out how to get it to work on my Mac.

    Unfortunately, the Windows Media Player browser plug-in will not work on an Intel Mac which is why you must use Flip4Mac. The Windows Media Player (installed in your Applications folder) will work on its own, but you have to download the .wmv file in order to view it.
    In most cases websites don't check for WMP specifically so any .wmv media is automatically played by Flip4Mac.
    Note that after installing WMP you will need to reinstall Flip4Mac in order to replace the WMP plug-in or Flip4Mac will no longer be active. You should restart the computer after installing Flip4Mac or it may not work properly with your browser.

  • How to make WMV files open in in Windows Media Player not Flip4Mac/QT

    I just installed Safari 4. With Safari 3 when I clicked on a WMV file on a web site it would automatically open in Windows Media Player. I liked this arrangement just fine. When I installed Safari 4, instead of this happening WMV files started to download instead. I installed Flip4Mac and now they play in QuickTime but I don't like the controls... i.e. I cannot adjust the volume except from the keyboard.
    Is there any way to make WMV files open in Windows Media Player the way they used to in Safari 3 instead of either downloading or opening in QuickTime with Flip4Mac?

    Not very easy but it could be done.
    If the file opens in QuickTime (via Flip4Mac) you can use the Movie Inspector window to "find" the URL. Then open that URL directly in WMP.
    You could also dig through the page source code or use the Safari Activity window to find the URL.

  • Audio/Vido Quicktime Problems

    First time poster here so here's hoping someone can help out.
    Since purchasing my new Macbook (previously had a 15" Power Book) I keep getting strange Quicktime symbols when opening media pages. For instance, newspaper pages show a transparent Quicktime symbol with a question mark.
    Other issues are when recording from the internet using iRecord Music I can't get full control panel to appear just a basic audio player.
    My old Powerbook doesn't have these issues.
    This is what I have tried to do:
    Preferences in Quicktime: checked
    Flip4Mac.......suspect my settings may be the culprit but have tried everything to no avail.
    Flash: loaded latest
    Can anyone offer advice plz? It's driving me nuts.
    Cheers
    NeilHK

    Thanks James.
    I did as you suggested; clicked all the unticked boxes and I have VLC already installed.
    Yet, still I get the gorgeous blue Quicktime symbol which soon turns transparent with a white question mark at its centre.
    I've tweaked every tweak I can think of.
    Looks like a trip to the shop again.
    I've had macs the last 6 years.
    My Powerbook died in June (new logic board needed) so I bought the black Macbook.
    This was replaced with a new one when the optical drive wouldn't do anything.
    Now I have this problem, which is not a Mac problem as such but nevertheless, I'm beginning to think I'm jinxed; anyone would think I'd tried to stab Steve Jobs in the heart.
    Any other suggestions I could try????????
