Quicktime causes computer to restart
Whenever I try to launch Quicktime - my computer will automatically restart - this only happens with Quicktime and the associated video files - ie. when I try to drop an mp4 file into itunes - it does the restarting thing as well. I have tried the uninstall and reinstall many times but to no avail. Any ideas as to why this is happening?? Could it be a virus??
i am having the same problem. whats the deal? why doesnt apple come up with a solution for this. the problem is quicktime 7, because 6 worked great.

Quicktime Causes Computer to Slow Down/Lock Up
Hello, for the past few days, I've encountered an odd problem with Quicktime. When I try loading .mov and .m4v files, Quicktime will cause my computer to lockup for a few seconds then go back to normal. If I attempt to even move the window around, my machine will lock up for a few seconds then return to it's normal state. Now, that's just with moving the window around, if I actually try to play a video, forget it. The sound stutters, no video, computer goes berserk, the only way to stop it is to minimize(which causing everything to go back to normal) and shut it down through the Task Manager.
I have not installed any third-party plugins for Quicktime, and this seems to have started when I upgraded to 7.3.1. Another interesting tidbit, there's some .mov files I can play and others I cannot. For example, I can play an h264 .mov file perfectly, but an h264 .m4v will cause my computer to lock up.Just spent the past 10 min creating an account and alias just for this post. I'm having a similiar problem. Quicktime seems to lock my computer for a min when I try to play videos in a web browser.
Try this if you're having a web browswer problem, open a quicktime video, preferably from your harddrive, directly into your quicktime player. If it asks to restore mime/file type associations then click yes, this is hopefully the fix. Now try to play any quicktime video on the internet and see if it stutters.
This seems to have worked for me, for now. I've also tried other things that worked for a little bit. There are two addons loaded into IE and took turns disabling them and trying to play in IE. Disabling one of them seemed to work, but then it started stuttering again the other day. I've tried playing videos in firefox, same problem. Course I tried updating. Uninstalling and reinstalling ect. I actually had quicktime completly wiped off my computer for a few weeks cause I was sick of it taking my system from me every time I tried to watch a video in the web browser.
anyway, tell me how it works -
Photoshop Starter Edition 3.0 - Photo Downloader causes computer to restart
I upgraded my computer running Windows XP from Adobe Photoshop Starter Edition 2.0 to 3.0. This put an icon, the Photo Downloader, on my task bar. When I turned my lap-top on it would load the desk top with no problems, but when loading the icons on the task bar it would get to the camera icon, there would be a long pause and my computer would shut down and restart. This happened intermittantly at first, than all the time. I uninstalled PhotoShop 2.0 and all its upgrades and 3.0. The problem resolved. I reinstalled PhotoShop 3.0 and the problem seems to have come back. Today as the camera icon loaded my computer shut down and restarted. The error reported is: Stop error caused by a device driver. I don't use the Photo Downloader. Can I remove it from my start up?
Is that where Colin Walls says to to to C:\Program Files\Adobe Starter Edition\3.0\Apps and rename the file "apdproxy.exe" to "apdproxy-same.exe"? This was suggested to make the icon go away in the taskbar. I have clicked on Disable for the icon, and "fingers crosssed" my computer hasn't restarted recently. You're right, my error message was that there was a driver problem, but I reloaded Photoshop twice and it didn't help. As soon as that icon loads (before I diabled it) the computer restarts. Do you know if "Disable-ing" the icon causes is to not start-up when I boot the computer? And that it is not running in the background? Thanks. Dayle Marsh

IPod Classic isn't recognized causes computer to restart
I recently purchased an iPod classic after having another iPod for about 3 years. My new iPod worked perfectly until a few days ago, when I was listening to it and it froze. I turned it off and on again, but I kept getting the Apple logo and it froze there too. I plugged in it to my computer, and I tried to restore the iPod to the factory settings. After many attempts, it finally worked, and now everytime I try to plug the iPod in to sync it I get a blue screen on my computer (windows) and it restarts itself. Also when this happens, the words on my iPod are random letters (for example, where it should say "Playlists" it says "ehfhtk" and so on). Please help me if you can, I don't know what I can do about this. Thanks.

Internet connection causing computer to hard restart
Hello.
I have an HP All in one desktop and I am having annoying issues! I cannot be actively using an internet connection for more than a few minutes (maybe 15, sometimes only 5) before the whole computer restarts. I am not getting any error messages, nor can I find any solution. I took my computer in to Geek Squad and they said they diagnosed the computer and ran every test possible but found nothing. When I am watching videos online the system almost immediately shuts down, however, they were able to view up to 18 hours without a reset. I have tried disabling the auto restart feature to no avail. I am so unbelievably frustrated because I do not know what is causing it!
Geek squad updated all my drivers and they said my computer was completely up to date including my anti-virus and they found no malware. I have also tried to do a partial restore of my system where my files wouldn't be removed just the applications, and that didn't work either!
Please help I'm at my wits end!!

I understand that your computer is restarting when it is online after about 15 or almost immediately upon watching a video, yet at Geek Squad can run the computer for 18 hours an not a have a problem. I was wondering if you have your computer plugged into a powerbar or surge protector? Have you tried it in a different outlet in your home?
I would be happy to assist you further, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. I am linking an HP Support document below that will show you how to find your product number. As well, if you could indicate which operating system you are using. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the requested information and I would be happy to provide you with assistance. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

Pressing play in Keynote causes computer restart
HELP, as I was putting together a presentation today on Keynote I went to check my progress by playing it in presentation mode, but when I hit the play button the computer completely restarted!! (And I lost a lot of my work, my fault for not saving) How do I fix this? Is this the result of updating to Leopard? - Yesterday when working on the same presentation I did not have these problems?
Hi, thanks for looking at it. Honestly, the problem is so intermittent that I can't say for sure, but I did not have the impression that it was any particular slide that corresponded to the shutdown. In the meantime, I did manage to create and use a short slideshow with various animations without a single shutdown (and plenty of "hit play" opportunities for it to happen).
Because I fear the repercussions of these instant shutdowns on my system, I'm not keen to push it, but perhaps what I will do is install Leopard on a testing partition and try for a while to see if I can make the shutdown repeat (though that will require finding a block of time to do it).
When I had heat-related shutdowns of a similar nature, I found that it was almost impossible to get any information about the cause of the shutdown -- console logging seems to be uninformative. Is there a debugging tool that anyone can recommend to monitor more verbosely and actively what the system is doing, so that after a shutdown there might be a hope of looking at the logs to see what happened last? (Maybe something like what "Sample Process" does in Activity Monitor, except running constantly?) -

I have another kind of problem with Firefox
== Description
==
Say I turn off my Computer or restart it & then I load up Firefox the pages I was previously at loads up. This is very very very annoying & I see no options in the settings to turn this off. Is there any way to turn this off ? Even if I just press the X button to close Firefox then later in the day I open Firefox the previous pages always open & it is annoying. I apologize for the language but that is just how ''irritated'' & annoyed I am about this

Go into ''Tools > Options > General > Startup:When Firefox starts:'' and configure it as you want (probably to show your home page?). This is the very first option that appears in the options screen, but I understand that it may not be very easy to find. Firefox 4 will not include any redesign to the options screen (except possibly it appearing in a tab, rather than in a popup), but you may interested to know that there are plans to redesign the options screen for versions after Firefox 4, to make it easier to use. If you want to know more about the redesign, just ask.
Anyway, if that doesn't help (it probably does, but just in case), it's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author. -
Computer was restarted because of a problem..
After installing mountain lion my computer started saying this to me. It seems to take a few hours for this to occur. If my computer is left running idle for hours I see this message on the screen - "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
There are some other problems I have run into that seem to be related. I would almost say that they are all linked to my external hard drive, but there are similar problems happening that (as far as I know) have nothing to do with my external hard drive. I will relate a few scenarios (all that have happened on a regular basis for almost a month now) and how they relate.
1. I open itunes and play a song from the library. Whether it is playing or not, if I leave it idle to use another program, when I come back to it after about 10 minutes and click on another song, hit play, or pause it, the program freezes, I get the spinning wheel and it does not respond. I have to force close. When I try to open it again, it won't load. Sometimes I even get an error message when I try to reopen that say something like, "you do not have permissions on the drive or folder". All of my music is on an external drive
2. Again if left idle, Safari will freeze when trying to upload images. Now this is the one that makes me think that this is not just some annoying hard drive thing. If i try to upload something, the upload window will come up but none of the will load and then i get the spinning wheel. sometimes i can click around on a few folders. I can make it to my external drive, nothing comes up. I can make to the desktop too, but nothing comes up on that either. As far as I know, nothing from safari is on my external drive.
3. Working in FCPX or Adobe PR 5.5 yield the same findings. if the program is left alone for more than about 10 minutes, it is no longer able to run even after force closing.
The MOST annoying thing about all of this is when i try to restart or shut down my computer. It wont do it. I have to hold the power button or unplug my computer.
I was told on a similar discussion to make this and post the problem details so here they are.
Thanks

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -

A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
When I try to open QuickTime my computer (using XP Professional) crashes and goes to a Blue Screen. On that screen it says a file, dti3duag.dll, (I believe it is an ATI video driver of some sort) caused the crash. This only happens with QuickTime.
To try and remedy this problem I have unistalled QuickTime and reinstalled it. Still doesn't work.
I recently updated the video driver for this computer and the problem started around the same time.
Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks.
Gateway DS 450 X Notebook Windows XP ProSure it's not ati3duag.dll? That's the normal name for an ATI driver. Not that I have a suggestion, I'm afraid, but it's important to get the file names correct so that others have accurate details.
And just a thought; have you tried rolling back that video driver? -
ITunes causing Windows to restart
I seem to have an issue at the moment with iTunes causing sudden system restarts quite regularly - usually when I am browsing the store. It seems to date back to when they added all the coverflow to each of the categories. It's not related to any recent Itunes update and only iTunes does it; no other program.
Anyone else getting this?Quote from: GD_Fritz on 07-July-12, 11:15:22
Also could it be my Vbios is somehow corrupted or causing this as it always seems to happen when windows is booting up before I have access to my machine right when it would be accessing the vBios?
Nope

Ok so if anyone ends up having this rediculously confusing problem like I did allow me to say, simply unplug your other monitors from your computer and then run the Nvidia driver software, works every time now. Only 1 monitor can be plugged in at one time while running the driver updates.

I am having trouble with the ipad2 freezing up causing me to restart the tablet. How can I fix this?
Doubt it is a Hardware issue...
If the Reset and the Restart have not Resolved the Issue...
Then the Next Step is a Restore...
Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC, Causing windows to restart before loading.
The topic kinda says a lot my N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC is causing windows to restart. I did not originally have this problem however after a recent reformat I started to have windows crash on the loading screen giving me and error
C:\Windows\Minidump\070612-33665-01.dmp
C:\Users\Fritz\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-44881-0.sysdata.xml
However, after some testing on my own I discovered it was card and/or driver related to your card/driver. As when I start windows without a video driver ... it is fine every time. Yet once the driver is installed, bang, crash every time. The only time it did not crash was when it was updating windows, pre-SP1 on win7 ultimate. Which is some kind of wierd workaround the crash. Now it seems to be persistent and I do not plan to reinstall windows everyday kinda like I have had too the last couple days. Helps plz !!Quote from: GD_Fritz on 07-July-12, 11:15:22

Why do system preferences revert back to default every time computer is restarted
Cannot keep changes to System preferences. All revert back to default every time computer is restarted.
Also, all extensions, e.g. adblock, reinstall every time computer is restarted.
<Personal information edited by Host>Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
Mid 2010 Macbook Pro "Your Computer was restarted because of a problem"
Hi guys,
Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro has been randomly restarting itself and showing a grey sceen with the text "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
I've googled and read all sorts of things saying remove everything from Login Items, it still happens. Everything I've tried has done nothing. Just in case it helps, here is my latest kernel panic log from Console:
