Quicktime codecs aren't used in Quicklook

Easy enough bug. Installed Perian, and can play videos in Quicktime, but they don't work in Quicklook.

Yes, but my assumption here is that QuickTime is the application that's registering itself with Quicklook. Are you saying that the Quicklook for viewing video content is build directly into Leopard and that QuickTime is left out of the equation? It's odd, since I would think that Quicklook would want to leverage the codecs available to QuickTime.

How Can I Fix A QuickTime Codec Error?
I have several movies from 2008 that are labeled as .mov but I now get a QuickTime error saying "The document "XXXXXX" could not be opened. A required Codec isn't available."
These movies ran in QuickTime just fine until about a month ago.
All the folders in which these movies were stored in 4 folders in 2 folders in one folder. All folders at each level were encrypted with Stuffit Deluxe a version circa 2008 and decrypted with a newer Stuffit Deluxe 10.x. Other movies that are NOT .mov and in with the .mov movies still run.
If I click on the Thumbnail Preview "It" runs.
    How can I fix this?
TOP image is the Error message.
BOTTOM image is the Thumbnail Preview info.
I've checked out "Tell Me More" and have not found a solution.

How Can I Fix A QuickTime Codec Error?
The basic work flow is to determine which codecs were used to create the non-playing file and then check to see if these formats are supported by your current system codec component configuration.
If the files will open in one of the QT player app, the open the inspector window to see which codecs were used to create the original file as seen here...
or here in the "Format" entry...
Or, if you have QT 7 keyed for "Pro" use, you can open the "Properties" window to gain even more information as demonstrated here...
if you file will not open in either of the QT Player apps, then you can try opening the Finder "Get Info" window for the file,
use a third-party media player that will open the file, or
use a dedicated media information utility to learn this information....
Once you know what codecs were used to create the file, post back with this information so we can deterine if the file should be natively supported by your Mac OS X install, requires an Apple Pro editing codec normally installed by the editor app, or requires a third-party codec which the user must supply.

Your information does not indicate whether or not the files actually played on the current system or were transferred from a different system which was properly configured for playbac, whether or not you recently upgraded your operating system/modified your codec component configuration by adding or deleting any codecs, whether your compound "Stuffing" of the files created corruption, etc.
As to MOV files the selves, this extension just implies the data was placed in the QT generic file container and the actually data could be of any compression format thathat was compatible with the codec component configuration for the system on which the files were created and could include natively supported system codecs, pro editing codecs, and/or third-party proprietary or hybrid codecs. (I.e., this is why we may need more information regarding the individual non-playing files.)
If I click on the Thumbnail Preview "It" runs.
f you are referring to QuickLook (QL) then the technology is different than QuickTime (QT). In the former case, the system is playing representative data but not actually opening the file as QT does. Thus, there is always the possibility that the problem is in the file structure (atom) information. For instance, suppose someone merely changed the MOV file extension in the Finder rather than actually copying data to a real MOV file container. Then it is possible that the QT player app may be searching for a codec that is not supposed or expected to be supported in the MOV file container and, not finding it, issues the erroneous codec error message—especially since you did not inticate the source of the file you are trying to play or, in some cases, which QT player is now not playing the file.
In short, there are several possibilities here and not enough specific information.

Select the file in the Finder, then do "Get Info" and look at the "More Info" part of the pane. It has a section for codecs and should tell you. Otherwise, open it with the QuickTime Player app and use "Show Movie Inspector" from the Windows menu to get the codec info.

  • Issues with Quicktime in Mavericks. I cant export to quicktime codecs in After Effects Or Premiere

    Hi,
I recently updated to OS Mavericks. And in the beginning I really liked the update, but I recently fired up my After Effects CC and Premiere CC to work on some animation videos I had to produce for client. And when I wanted to export my animation. I could not find my Quicktime Codec settings like. H264, Mp4, Apple Pro res or any other quicktime codec. I read some articles on issues with Mavericks/Qucktime and this export problem in After Effects and Premiere. But I could not find a solution. It used to work on 10.8.5!
I tried this... But it did not work ;-(
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2013/08/solutions-for-problems-with-quicktim e-files-in-after-effects-cc-12-0-because-of-conflict-with-dvcprohdvideoout-quick time-component.html
I tried to uninstall perian. But did not help at all. They even discontinued the product.
Does anyone else stumbled on this problem? Or maybe has a solution? I thought of downgrading to 10.8.5 But that is not ideal because I don't have a Time machine Backup from that period or earlier. And otherwise I have to collect all my data, emails, pictures etc. I seriously could use some help!

After uninstalling and reinstalling the entire Adobe CC suite and all QuickTime components I was still dead in the water. I then tried another User account on my computer and AE and AME worked perfectly with fast startup and all QT/H.264 components in place. This established the problem was in my main User directory...
After some backing up, I deleted all Adobe and com.Adobe.whatever files from User/Library/Preferences and then restarted the computer. I then copied all Adobe and com.Adobe.whatever files from the other user folder and restarted and found that After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder were working perfectly:

  • Quicktime codecs missing AE can't output HELP!!! :)

I recently uninstalled my older versions of CS3 & CS4 from my computer, with those I seemed to lose my quicktime codecs. When I go to render out of AE I am missing lossless, alpha only, lossless with alpha, Quicktime DV NTSC, PAL 48khz, and Ram Preview. Is there any way to get the quicktime components reinstalled? A link?
My output to in Render also says Unknown Output Destination... When clicked it errors: After Effects warning: cannot output to this format because it is not currently installed. (39 :: 99)
I also get the following errors at program start You have at least one output module template that refers to a missing output plug-in. Please check your Output Module Templates.

This problem is unsolved, and it occurs with my new install of CS5 on 10.6.
Many of us discovered to our horror that upgrading from 10.5 to MacOS10.6 made Quicktime Pro disappear only to be replaced by the crippled QTx Most of the functions of QTPro have been incorporated directly into Apple's pro apps. You can install QT7 from the 10.6 disk as an option and that might reinstate some of your lost functions. Dunno, I have not bothered; everything I need from QT is readily available but I have not had a request for any products using legacy codecs.

  • Quicktime codec not found - can't open in FCP

I have the FCP:Beyond the Basics book. The media files are largely HD quality. Upon trying to open them, FCP gives me the following error,"Codec not found. You may be using compressor type without the corresponding hardware card." This is followed by a "not enough memory" message.
The source files also cannot be opened up in quicktime, so I assume it's a quicktime codec issue. My FCP and QT Pro are completely updated. Nowhere can I find where I might gain the missing codec or why it isn't present to begin with. I have reinstalled the media and am inprocess of reinstalling QT.
My old MacBookPro (last year's model) could read all of these files, no prob.

    QT reinstall did no good.
As a side note...this is a totally new computer. Oringinally, I installed FCP but not DVD Studio Pro. At a later date, I installed Studio Pro. I don't know if this messed with codecs or not.
Also, I couldn't find any apple hdv codec in the qt library. There is the apple intermediate codec, though. Hmmmmmmm.

  • Quicktime Codec Issue--Black Screen

I am having trouble viewing a movie I made about two years ago. The sound is okay, but when I attempt to open the film in Quicktime (it is in a quicktime file) or in Final Cut, the screen is always black. Since I last viewed the movie, I have updated my system, quicktime and Final Cut a number of times.
When I try to open the movie using the old Final Cut elements, I get the following message: "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding card." I saw a post about a similar problem that suggested going into system preferences and enabling quicktime legacy decoders. I have done so, but it did no good. I have also upgraded the DivX codec, because one thing I read suggested that might help.
I would appreciate any other suggestion about other codecs I might need or anything else that might help. Is there a way to check to see which codec I need, if that is indeed the problem. If it makes a difference, the movie is in HD.
    Thank you.

  • JPEG2000 Quicktime Codec

My intent is to archive video footage in the best possible codec. Playability is second priority to preserving quality and storage conservation since we can re-encode to the standard of the day when it is pulled out of mothballs.
It appears to me that neither the PhotoJPEG, Motion JPEG A nor the Motion JPEG B quicktime codecs are wavelet based but rather based on the original JPEG standard (based on 8x8 pixel blocks) which employs a less elegant algorithm than JPEG2000 (wavelet). From what I can tell, JPEG2000 is the only wavelet based codec of the JPEG choices. Is this correct?
Is the JPEG2000 codec in Quicktime actually the motion JPEG2000 which employs interframe compression (strict JPEG2000 only uses Intraframe)?
Also, JPEG2000 has 3 intended modes of quality per the intent of the JPEG2000 group: mathematically lossless, visually lossless and lossy. Unfortunately we only have a 0-100 quality slider in the Quicktime export box. I understand that mathematically lossless would be 100% but where do we begin going from visually lossless to lossy?
According to the specs, JPEG2000 is untethered to a color space while being capable of 4:4:4 and can go up to 16 bit. How do we know which color space we are in and what bit level when we are using using the Quicktime interface? Is there a method of choosing our desired color space and bits?

  • Quicktime codecs + Vista = BSOD

    Hey Apple folk,
When can we expect a solution for the problems the QuickTime codecs encounter in Vista? And yes, the incompatibility is an Apple problem.
    -- Vista users

Be sure you cleaned up the registry: I use nCleaner, the best for Vista! On the net I've found this http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab
Try to run its install and see if it re-adds ActiveX control. Check in IE7's Tools menu the active components...
I personally have had to RE-FORMAT my Vista parition (still young, phew!) and reinstall everything because once I installed, uninstalled, and then re-installed QT 7.1.6 IE7 didn't show PNG images anymore and embedded qt video also.
In my humble opinion this version 7.1.6 still makes a messy in Vista's registry, so use it with caution! And NEVER try to uninstall it!
Now I have successfully installed iTunes+QT 7.1.6 and they work as expected under Vista, except QT that crashes with some old movs and IE7 in particular that ALWAYS crashes on close/quit (quicktime.qts error!) after the plugin has been executed...
Apple, we definitely need a fix for Vista, please!

  • Avid Users-QuickTime and (Older) AVID QuickTime Codec

Hello everyone. The reason I am posting here regarding this instead of in Avid's own forum (I believe they do have one) is simply because I do not have an account/ID there, and most Avid users are also Mac users.
Anyway, the remaining of our graphic macs in the office will be upgrading to G5s and OS X Tiger soon (finally) and one "old" Avid Symphony (on a Windows NT) is still 'working with us' and the new OS X Avid QuickTime Codecs are unable to read any QuickTime movie exported from the Symphony to the macs.
Right now because we are still using OS 9, an older Avid QuickTime Codec (that only exist in OS 9 platform) enable us to read the movie clip and allow us to render properly in After Effects.
To allow that clip from Symphony to be able to use on a Mac OS X platform, we have to use QuickTime Player (OS 9) to re-export it using the newer Codec into a new movie clip.
After we finished rendering we will use the same method to re-export that clip to "downgrade" the clip to the older codec.
If we all use new G5s, one way is to install OS 9 as Classic in G5, launch it and launch QuickTime Player to do the same - unless in Classic environment this method will not work??
I am just wondering if anyone in this profession has the same "dilemma" the same working situation as us? And how do you solve it?? We can't simply just get rid of the Symphony (we love to... ha ha ha)
    Thanks and cheers

I had the same issue and I located the registry key HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\Quicktime\LocalUserPreferences
I then substituted the %USERPROFILE% variable for the entire key and copied the preferences file, which I created with an account the had admin privileges, to the root of the mandatory user profile. Now I can run the software as a user using this mandatory profile and the software runs without prompting me to Update the software.

  • Missing Quicktime Codecs

When i did the last update i seem to have lost some of my Quicktime codecs. How do I get them back? I'm trying to edit HDV in Final Cut Pro but I keep getting an error message saying I do not have the required codec. I used to have it so where has it gone?
Is there somewhere I can re-install them from? And where is the correct location for these as I have two Quicktime folders.
Hard Drive -> Library -> Qt = empty
Hard Drive -> Library -> Quicktime = empty
    User -> Library -> Quicktime = I have the following: AC3MovieImport / LimitedOffsetDH / Perian
Can anybody advise what I'm missing and where to get it from please?

  • Need to supply All "I"Frame GOP Structure - which codec shoudl I use?

    Hi All
I HAVE searched the forums for help here but no luck
I am supplying a .mov to be played out on a DL2 system. I'm completely happy making my edit (manipulating jpegs to music), but want to check what sequence settings/codec I should use.
2 specifications I've been supplied with are..
-Closed GOP Structure should be All "I" Frames
    -Color Space 4:2:0
I plan to use compressor to make the final .mov
Can anyone please recommend a codec that will match the above requirements?
    Thanks
    Hugh

    Either
... in FCP you would choose IMX 625/50 at 50Mb/s for PAL (or the equivalent IMX 525/60 preset for NTSC)
... in Compressor you can create a new QuickTime Movie preset (or edit an existing one) and choose IMX 625/50 (50 Mb/s) (or the NTSC variant) from the Compression Type popup in the Standard Video Compression Settings window

  • Which codec should I use for web cam capture?

I've got my new Live! Cam Voice up and running with my PC. It captures audio and video fine but when I load the video into Adobe Premiere for further editting, Premiere doesn't seem to like the codec I'm using (WMV-Window Media Video). Inside Premiere the video does not seem to play at full frame rate and when I render out an export (to an QuickTime .mov for example) also seems to be having trouble converting the WMV input to that format or any format for that matter.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Hi,
I'm capturing video using the Windows Media Video (.wmv) using the high quality setting (640x480). I think pixel capture problem I discribed above might be releated to hard drive access while the camera is capturing. Compression is set to I420. Same problem with the other option (RGB 24).
Here is a picture my corruption problem:

This problem happens randomly about every minute (on average) of captured video and only for a frame. The discolored line appears at different heights in the frame and it sometimes thinker than this example.

  • Issue with turning on project 2010 / 2013 - "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."

I get the following error after the installation and configuration window of MS Project: "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."
It happens both with MS Project 2010 and 2013 on a Windows 7 desktop.
I tried installing / uninstalling Office 2010, MS Project, tried installing 32 and then 64 bit versions, clean up, disk error checker, startup changes (msconfig), anti virus, running as Windows 7 and then Windows XP compatible mode.
Nothing helps. I see this issue reported as early as 2007 version of MS projects on Microsoft forums, but I do not see any solution anywhere. Any suggestions on how to fix the issue without having to reformat hard drive? Every other application, including
all other Office programs work seamlessly.
I also tried Microsoft support, after an hour and a half of basically doing what I did before, I was told I have to pay 99$ for "premium" support, so someone can look at this bug.
I have 16 Gb RAM and more than 200Gb or hard drive free, so actual memory is not the problem.

This issue was originally reported with MS Project 2007 and keeps popping up since.
A quick Google search provides more than 200K pages of results of this issue:

Computer was defragged already. I run more tests, and specifically when MS Projects tries to run, it tries to take all memory, more than 300Gb, on the computer. (DropBox was running at the same time, and warned that there were no space. As soon as MS Project
stopped attempting to configure itself, everything came back to normal and the available space became available again.)
Looking through older forum posts, looks like this application tries to take "unlimited" amount of memory. Some registry fixes are mentioned potentially, but I was not able to apply them.
Since everything else works, this is a MS Project bug reported by multiple users on various versions of Windows, including Vista and 7, so please provide a fix and not 'not a know bug' lie. All the premium support will say, is to format the hard drive, unless
they have a patch or a registry edit solution. If the latter is true, since the issue exists for multiple years, it should have been already been provided to users.
Also, I am not running a SQL server, or any server, this is an installation on a local machine.
