Quicktime Conversion Export Takes Way Too Long

I am using FCE2.
I have a 28-minute project that I am trying to export to a quicktime movie. (h.264 640x480 29.97FPS)
Every time I export, it takes 6 hours to complete! When I play it back, the quality is bad. It skips like there are not enough FPS.
I have tried adjusting the compression, size, FPS everything...but it just doesn't come out right. I have the latest versions of quicktime pro, and FCE2.
Something is wrong. Isn't 6 hours way too long? My computer gets real hot and the fan is constantly on while it's crunching.
What do I need to change? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Ah I think I figured it out.
I did another test project with the same source DV file, but didn't do ANY editing to it.
It took 2 minutes to export a 70mb reference mov file from a 7 minute DV sequence.
Then I cropped & resized the sequence by changing parameters in the "motion" tab.
Then it took 20 minutes to export a much larger reference mov file from the same 7 minute DV sequence.
Then I clicked "render all" after selecting every render option in the drop-down menu.
Then it took less than 1 minute to export a 70mb reference mov file from the same 7 minute DV sequence.
So I guess I was having problems because I didn't render "everything", because I didn't select "FULL" on the drop-down menu for rendering. I thought only RED segments in the timeline needs to be rendered prior to export, but apparently the "FULL" render must be selected as well so that the entire timeline is nice and purple. (or some shade of blue)
Also, a cropped and resized video is very large in size (GB) if it is exported as a reference file only without prior rendering. * Can someone else confirm that this is the normal behavior in FCE? *
Oh well, lesson learned.. This movie is going to take a very long time to export, and result in a very large file. But I can't use it without cropping & resizing it!

When I enter TM, to rebuild a mail box for a specific day, it takes WAY TOO LONG! My mistake was keeping over 16000 emails from the years I have been using TM. Is there a solution to help solve this? I cleaned out my existing mailbox but its too late.

Such an error is usually a problem with a cookie that is too large and not the URL, unless there is really a lot of GET data appended. Cookies are send as part to the HTTP response headers.
If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file <i>cookies.sqlite</i> that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) <b>cookies.sqlite</b (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete <b>cookies.sqlite-journal</b> and <b>cookies.txt</b>, if they exist, in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

  • IMac takes way too long to initialize

    Hi all,
when I start my 17" iMac intel duo core it takes way too long to start-up. This is a recent phenomena. Before (presumably before I did something to the computer to cause this) the start-up time was very quick as it should be. I've 2 GB of RAM - so I know it's not a RAM issue. I've lots of hard disk storage left too. I just can't figure out what's taking it so long, nor do I know how to remedy the cause.
Also, I have Windows XP installed as a partition, and when I restart going to windows, or coming back to OSX 10.4.11 the initialize time is too long.
Note that i've tried all steps listed in troubleshooting in the iMac User's Guide, and they don't work.
    1. Has anyone any thoughts about how to revert to the quick start-up times?
    2. Does anybody know what keys to hold so that when you power on the iMac you can choose which operating system to start in?
    Any help is appreciated,
    Vincenso

  • Time machine backups take way too long

    Greetings,
Having trouble with Time Machine backups taking way too long. (No, it's not the first backup after some momentous event, as 90% of what I read about slow backups mentions; it's _every_ backup.)
20" iMac purchased Oct 2008. OS 10.6.8. 500 GB internal hard drive. 3 TB external backup drive. Was tested at the local "Genius" Bar, but they found nothing wrong with it. The best they could do is to recommend a restore from Time Machine, and if that didn't work, start clean and reload the OS and then copy my stuff back. I don't think so. I actually did a full Time Machine restore for a different reason, and it didn't help (except that I gained a few GB of disk space!).
My Time Machine backups now take about 39 minutes to complete. I have a 500 GB internal drive and this problem happens regardless of which external drive I use. (I have 3: 2 WD hard drives and one [noisy!] G-drive.) My current backup drive is a 3 TB WD drive with 2 TB of free space.
These are small incremental backups, typically about 35 MB. It doesn't take half an hour to copy 35 MB!
All phases take a long time, but the most irritating one is where TM appears to get stuck for a long time at the beginning and end of the copying phase. For example, at one point it will say something along the lines of Backing Up 7 KB of 34.4 MB. And it'll be like that for minutes on end. Later it will say something like 35 MB of 35 MB and hang there for minutes on end. During these periods the write I/O rate will go up and down, and CPU usage will often be very high (with backupd using 90 - 100%, in addition to highly elevated System CPU usage). In one particular backup the I/O write rate for one part of it looked like a heartbeat on an EKG! I should have taken a screenshot.
At the beginning during the Calculating Changes phase, backupd is using between 90 and 100% CPU.
There is also high CPU usage during the next phase, Preparing. And the number of items being prepared is in the thousands.
It always goes in two rounds because it finds that the root directory (/) has been modified.
I've Googled and searched Mac forums and found nothing useful. I started with a new .plist file and nothing's changed.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!
I wrote the above Jun 28. Yeah, finally getting around to posting it. Since then it's gotten worse. I now do a manual backup once a day and it takes almost an hour. I tried re-indexing Spotlight. No good.
Can anyone help? Again, this is not a "first backup." It is _every_ backup.
    Thanks!
    AEF

Thanks for your efforts. Here are my answers, comments, and further info:
I believe I have repaired permissions on my drive as part of my troubleshooting. And I'm sure I checked SMART status, which came up with a thumbs up, so to speak. I'm trying again. I don't see any useful messages in any logs on the console. I'm looking at "All Messages" and there is so far nothing useful. Oh, I think you must mean repair as in "Repair Disk," not "Repair Disk Permissions." I believe the "genius" at the Apple store did that or something just as good. The machine checked out fine according to them.
Checked SMART status just now: passed. Ran Quick Drive Test: also passed.
Oh, I installed "Time Machine Buddy". Occasionally, and only occasionally, I get a "deep traversal needed message" like this (I copied this from .Backup.log):
Running preflight for "Macintosh HD" (mount: '/' fsUUID: BF606E9A-5FD0-3B92-8D76-33DC63E7B2B1 eventDBUUID: 30DD929D-8982-46C2-BAE6-F0BD1E73916A)

            Calculating size of changes
Should copy 2919 items (27.8 MB) representing 7116 blocks of size 4096. 546805181 blocks available.

Time elapsed: 1 minute, 39.000 seconds
But the vast majority of the time I do NOT get this message. But if there's something wrong with this apdb file, what can I do to fix it?
Note that there is usually, if not always, a lot of CPU activity or I/O (disk) activity, but not a lot getting done.

  • Quicktime takes way too long to start playing a movie accessed over Samba

I keep all my AVI files on a Linux server, shared via SMB and mounted on my Mac.
Under Tiger, I could double-click on an AVI file and Quicktime would immediately open and playback could start immediately.
Since upgrading my Mac (a high end DeskPro) to Leopard, I now see delays of up to about one MINUTE before the quicktime window even appears. If I start Quicktime by itself, the content window shows up immediately but if I drag an AVI file into it, I see that long delay.
I thought it might have been an SMB problem but if I run VLC and drag an AVI file to it in the same way, it starts instantly.
This problem did not happen under Tiger, but it's consistent under Leopard. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    D

I'm having similar issues but I'm using simple AFP instead of SMB. Since the last wave of updates, there's no hope in site for maintaining a steady connection to stream video--what used to be so simple with QuickTime!!
Have tried many solutions, no avail....anyone with suggestions?
The net, everything else works great!!
Dare you to find the solution that I haven't tried!!

  • QuickTime X takes way too long to save

I went to trailers.apple.com and clicked download on the 720p version of the Thor and Captain America trailers this morning. It opened QuickTime as usual and downloaded the movies. When I click "File -> Save As..." I tell it to save to the desktop and click "Save". On one, the progress bar gets to maybe 10% and just hangs there forever. On the other, maybe 30% and the same thing happens.
I've re-downloaded both files twice, and tried to save multiple times, and the same thing happens each time. I've done this before, and it worked. It was quite slow, but it did eventually work. Shouldn't this be working much faster? Once the file's streamed to my machine, it should just need to copy it to my specified location, right? These files are relatively small - 22 and 102 MB. Am I missing something?

Yes. I just tried saving these two files. The first (21 MBs) took about a second. The other (97 MBs) took about 5 seconds.

Yes, the files just need to be saved from cache memory to your hard drive. Sounds as if it's time to run some test. Could be anything from a corrupted/conflicted OS to failing hard drive. If you have a diagnostic package, it may be time to run a test series totry and determine where the problem is located.

  • Taking picture takes way too long - as does downloading

Camera in iphone now takes an incredible amount of time for the camera to get in ready position. After taking a photo (after waiting...) it takes even more time for it to return to ready mode. When syncing -- it is taking a long time as well. These issues have appeared recently but do not seem to be related to the number of photos on the iphone (have stored as many as 2,000).
Several photos have been funky -- quadrants showing rather than single image.
Advice needed. Will take in to genius bar at Apple Store next if no good solutions.
    Thank you.

    Try a reboot (described below).
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
    A reset/reboot is:
    Go to Home Screen
    Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
    Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
    Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.
You may also wish to read this tread about reboots and odd application behavior.

  • Windows Login Takes Way too Long to Load

New computer (Satellite L870) - recevied mid Sept.  Until last week, everything was ok.  During startup, computer takes 15+ minutes to load the windows login (password request) screen.  Did not begin doing this after new software was loaded.  Did a system restore to earliest possible point.  Ran any and all diagnotic programs on the computer - all come up with nothing.  Once the password is entered, computer works fine but why does it take so long to get to that point?

If it doesn't cause you too much difficulty, it's best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. The process will wipe the drive clean, of course.
If that creates too much work, we can troubleshoot. Start by letting us know what happens when you boot into Safe Mode.
Start your computer in safe mode
See if you can identify where the hang-up occurs.
Always tell us which Satellite L870 you have when you post here. There is a label on the bottom.

  • Oracle 11g takes way too long to start

I find that Oracle 11g 11.1 takes much longer to start than Oracle 10g or 9g. I am on HP UNIX 11i server, Have others observed similar issue. Are they any init.ora parameters to speed up startup.
    Thanks.

alter system set fast_start_mttr_target=300 scope=bothThis has nothing to do with the posters startup time - at least if he stops his database not with "shutdown abort" or "startup force".
@user12021554: What exactly is "long"? Can you compare these numbers to 10g or even 9i?
Can you further check the server is not swapping and database parameters are equal?

  • Z10 music transfer takes way too long

Hi, I am loading music onto my z10 by just dragging dropping into the music folder on my sd card (about 4 gb music) and it is plugged into the usb, and I'm finding it is taking soo long (10 hours estimated already waited an hour) previously i loaded an even bigger file and it was long but never took this long (maybe took 2-3 hours previously). Just wondering why it takes soo long to write to an sd card as opposed to downloading from the internet or downloading over wifi or if there is something wrong with my setup (im running windows 7 with a decent laptop by 2 years ago standard), just hoping someone can comment on what they know or have experienced

  • Deleting and Renaming takes way too long

I have been using Bridge CS3 on my desktop (win xp, 3gb ram) for quite some time with no major problems that I couldn't figure out. Recently, I bought a laptop with Vista and 3gigs of ram. I pretty much only use this laptop for bridge and ACR and some photoshop actions. When I started using Bridge I noticed that it was actually a little bit faster than my desktop when opening folders of images and using the quick develop and ratings and labels.
However, once I tried to delete a group of images or batch rename a group of images I might as well find something else to do for at least 12 hours before I check back on the progress.
So as a test I ran a group of 700 images through the batch rename on my desktop and it took about 5 or 6 minutes to rename and then reload the thumbnails. (even this seems a little slow to me, but oh well, i like bridge anyway) At the same time I ran the same amount of images through the batch rename on my laptop. This was about an hour and a half ago and the progress bar in the "Renaming Files" pop-up window is all the way to the left and hasn't moved a millimeter to the right.
    Anyone know what's going on?
    thanks, Ross

    Curt-
    Thanks for the reply!
    Quick thumbnails: Yes, always
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT
The performance of the laptop has been great. It is a sony vaio that I bought 2 months ago and it has been very capable with CS3 photoshop, bridge and ACR. I load in thousands of raw files, cull them down to 600-800, apply quick develop settings with camera raw, and then batch all 800 through a fairly intense photoshop action. All of this runs great except when I want to rename or delete in Bridge. A little earlier I finally shut down bridge after letting it rename images for 3 hours and it had only renamed 7 files out of 700. (And I'm just trying to rename to Name_0001)
If you think I should run a performance check, I will. I'm just not familiar enough with Vista yet to know how.

  • IMovie takes way too long to share with iDVD

I did a software update (recommended by Mac) a few days ago, don't remember the detail. Since then iMovie/iDVD does not seem to be working properly. I have an iMovie project and wanted to share with iDVD. The "prepare project" process started and indicated that the estimated time will be over 6 hours. Usually it only took minutes. My movie is only 8 minutes long?
    Any help?

I would suggest that you use SHARE/TO MEDIA BROWSER in Large size.
Then in iDVD, Open the Media Browser to the Movies tab and drag the movie you just made into your project.

  • Help;;BOUNCING is not happening in "offline"...takes way too long

    Hello,
I am bouncing individual unfrozen misdid tracks, utilizing the Miroslav Philharmonik virtual sampler, and all of a sudden today it is taking nearly seven minutes to bounce each track (Fr Horn, violin 1, etc.) of a piece that is 7 minutes long. I have been careful to check the "OFFLINE" box, NOT "realtime", and I have been doing this for weeks and it has been fine. Help.
The Philharmonic library definitelyt has to be unfrozen, as the architecture requires that 1 audio instrument is assigned to "all channels" and then you can have up to 16 different channels playing the sampler by their sequence midi channel assignments. Once the "instrument" is frozen, even if you "solo" just 1 track the Bounce will grab all the different Samples from the Instument. So it def needs to be unfrozen.

In a "Logic instruments only" song you'll have better results. But with external gear or third party software the offline bounce function has severe limitations, some predictable others not. It depends on horsepower and settings. One more string part may have made all the difference in the engines ability to play at highspeed for offline capture.
If its all audio tracks thats much easier, but songs with note data are much tougher to bounce.
In Logic 7.0 offline bouncing was claimed to work even when live midi inputs from external gear were playing...that's impossible. How can external gear play at high speed? Of course it didn't work. Maybe they've provided an error message in 7.1. I haven't bothered to check.
My advice is to avoid offline bouncing when playing midi note data. Besides I'm an old **** and you should listen to what you're bouncing to ensure all is well. Have a coffee, put your feet up. Enjoy your creation.
