Quicktime.cpl corrupted

My Itunes had a corrupted file, and would not open, it reccomended I run chkdsk, but it would only run the program in read-only mode, and get to 9% and find errors and instantly closed.   I uninstalled itunes, but it said I would need to uninstall quicktime as well to reinstall itunes.  IT wouldn't let me do this.  I've been able to delete everything but quicktime.cpl   in the QT system folder.  I've been screwing with this for HOURS, I can't figure out how to delete this file.   I don't even know if this will fix my problem when I uninstall it, but totally stuck here.   When I try to delete it, it says error 0x80070091  directory is not empty   and it will not delete.
I've also even tried downloading the windows installer clean up, and zsoft, but NOTHING will get rid of this file. I made sure I had all the permissions correct, I've restarted my computer, and I can't think of anything else to do.  I'm out of ideas, PLEASE help me.....

If all else fails try thorough uninstallation. A good resource for this is apple's own knowledge base. Follow the steps after the error codes on knowledge base article 93976. That should get you started in the right direction.

  • ITunes won't open after moving to new PC; quicktime.cpl corrupt?

I used PCMover to move my files and applications to my new PC. After this, iTunes 6 wouldn't open. I installed 7.0.2 over 6, but it won't open either. The process starts, then I receive a message saying iTuens has encountered a problem and needs to close. The iTunes display never appears.
    So far I have:
Rebooted (several times, at various points in the below processes)
Uninstalled and re-installed iTunes 7.0.2 (several times)
Attempted to uninstall Quicktime. The uninstall will not finish, saying it encountered a fatal error. Quicktime will not run, either.
Re-installed Quicktime. It still will not run or uninstall.
    Repaired Quicktime. No change.
Tried to open the QuickTime control panel. This fails with the error "An exception occurred while trying to run "C:Windows\system32\shell2.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Windows\system32\QuickTime.cpl",QuickTime"
Anyone know how I can get QuickTime and iTunes to work? Thanks.

when a QuickTime uninstall throws that message at folks, it's usually best to try completely scraping the itunes and QuickTime program files and installation configuration information from the PC, and doing a careful staged reinstall afterwards.
try the technique in the following post. (it includes instructions on what to do if Add/Remove isn't letting you uninstall one of the programs.)

  • QuickTime.cpl error when updating QT7

QuickTime v7.1.6 and iTunes v7.1.1.5 installed, and both seem to work just fine, but ...
I cannot figure out what is causing the following error. It only seems to happen when I use the QuickTime control panel to look for an update.
I can generate the error 2 different ways:
    the following sequence:
    QuickTime Preferences
    Update tab
    Update button
Checking for QuickTime updates... window appears
    generates the following error:
    RUNDLL
X An exception occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl"
    the following sequence:
    Help (in menu bar)
    Update existing software
Checking for QuickTime updates... window appears
    generates the following error:
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    X Buffer overrun detected!
    Program: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state.
The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
As stated above, the program itself works fine. I've reinstalled QuickTime, but as I expected, the error did not go away.
Running the "Apple Software Update" program works just fine, but it's not trying to run QuickTime.cpl as an application, which is what the RUNDLL line appears to be doing.

hmmmm. not the most common of installation error messages.
let's make sure we've cleared away all remnants of the previous install of QuickTime.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
does an install go through properly now?

  • Is the QuickTime.CPL needed?

I don't have it in the System32 folder.

The QuickTime.cpl shouldn't be in the the System32 folder. In a standard QuickTime installation it lives in the QuickTime folder in your Program files directory.
Are you getting a message referencing it when you try to open the control panel?

  • System32 and Quicktime.cpl error message

If I try to run Quicktime from control panel I get the error
An exception occurred trying to run C:\\Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RUNDLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32\Quicktime.cpl", Quicktime
When I try to start off desktop, my harddrive just grinds a little, but Quicktime never starts up. Nor Picture viewer. Only thing that works is 'read me'. Running latest QT with XP, IE7, Nvidia Geforce, Dell 8200. I can view movie trailers and demo on Quicktime.com no problem.

i've got the same message when i try to go to the MIME settings in the browser tab. When i copy the file quicktime.cpl from C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem to C:\Windows\System32 i dont get the error. But when i try update my quicktime software i will get the error again.
I found this problem because i want to play a hd trailer on a website in firefox. But when i try it ask for plugins that i must install. When i click on that it cant be automatic installed, so i must to it manual. When im redirected to the apple page for manualy installing quicktime, i try to install it, but it seems that firefox dont see that quicktime is installed. I still get the message about plugins.
Maybe it has a conflict with the error about quicktime.cpl
btw, when i get the quicktime.cpl error, the quicktime windows close by itself.

  • Quicktime movies corrupted by adding metadata in Adobe CS3

Recently I happened to switch from using Adobe CS2 to CS3 (don't ask me why, I know they're old versions).  I use Adobe Bridge to manage/organize my digital photos and movie files from my digital camera.  In CS2, whenever I attempted to select multiple files to annotate with metadata such as description, location, etc., the program would warn me that "some files" in the selection (i.e., the Quicktime .MOV files) could not contain metadata.  So I would click OK, continue to annotate the batch, and Bridge would simply exclude the .MOV files and only add the metadata to the photos.  When I started using Bridge CS3, I noticed that the warning dialogue box no longer came up.  At first I was pleased, and thought, Great, now it's OK to add metadata to my movies as well!  But not long after, I started noticing a problem where some of my .MOV files were no longer playable, even though they had been fine immediately after download.  Since I only add metadata to about a quarter of my files, it took me a while to see the pattern:  Adding metadata to the .MOV files does in fact corrupt them and make them unplayable in Quicktime.  CS3 was not doing me any favors by suppressing the old warning!  I knew the movies were fine since I had already played them before, but the moment they were assigned metadata, Quicktime refused to recognize the files.
Now that I know the problem I am very vigilant about not adding metadata to movies anymore, of course, but I need to salvage the already corrupted movies, since some of them are precious to me, such as my daughter's birthday videos.  I have tried various workarounds such as attempting to convert them to another format with video conversion software, but the conversion software also can't recognize the files now.  The best luck I have had is that I can still play the movies using a program called VLC, so I know the essential data is not ruined, it's all still there.  And when I have tried a couple of diagnostic tools, they are able to extract the images and recognize the file -- but not able to restore it to its original form.  I have also tried deleting the metadata, in Bridge, but that doesn't help.  Does anyone know of a method or a program that can help me restore these as Quicktime files?  It appears that there are services out there that will charge a lot of money to repair corrupted files, but I really think this should not be so hard or expensive.  The integrity of the movies is still there, everything is intact, there's just been a line of code inserted somewhere that shouldn't be there I suppose.  I wish I could get in there and delete it myself.  It's great that VLC has no problem playing them, but as long as these are unusuable as Quicktime files, I can't send them to my family, upload them to video-sharing sites, etc.
    Thanks, anyone, for your help.

I don't know how to fix what was already modified, but in Premiere Preferences, there is a box that is checked by default, something about "Write XMP data" or similar, you'll want to uncheck that.

  • Quicktime movies corrupting randomly.  "The movie could not be opened."

    Hello,
Has anyone else encountered the Quicktime error where you have a perfectly functional file stored to a disk and then randomly, the file's icon will change from a still image from the movie to just the generic Quicktime file movie clip icon and then if you try and open the file you get the following error message:
The movie could not be opened.
The file is not a movie file.
Nothing was done to the file. Nothing was done to the disk. This can happen when no one is even using the computer. Once it happens, the file will not open or play at all. It just returns this error message. I've only seen this so far happen on ProRes HQ files. Doesn't matter if they are HD or SD. It is infuriating and is costing my facility a ton of money and time and making us seriously reconsider using Quicktime.
The only resource I've been able to find online that seems to be able to deal with this is:
    http://aeroquartet.com/movierepair/repair.html
However, because of the nature of the content that I work with I cannot send a clip out of house for repair and cannot pay $89 per file (starting price). I would really like to see a response from someone at Apple as to why this is happening and what fixes are in the works to prevent it.
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime corrupted for iPad 2 videos - no hand cursor controls

I have a 32-bit Dell XPS M1210 laptop and a 64-bit Dell XPS 435 desktop - both of which have had hard drives recently formatted and authentic Win 7 SP1 installed. Not much on either but IE8, Office 2003, HP Printers, Live Mesh, Avast, Google Earth and a few insignificant programs which are not common to both machines. Neither had ever had Quicktime installed until today since I just started rebuilding both. Wanted to watch the iPad 2 videos just posted. Downloaded current Quicktime, installation flawless.
Quicktime will not run properly on either machine. Same exact corruption problem on both despite 64 vs. 32 bit etc. The videos play, the black centered controls for Pause, volume etc. are there, however I cannot use them. Cursor blinks to a hand for a split second as I hover over controls, but then changes back to Arrow pointer and is not clickable anywhere on video. So, I can watch the video but can't pause, rewind etc. - no controls.
I have an old Dell XPS-410 Windows Prof. XP SP3 with Quicktime 7.69.80.9 which runs the videos perfectly, pauses controls etc.
Since the only thing in common with these two machines where Quicktime is corrupted is Win 7, I suspect problem may be centered there? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. If I go find OLD quicktime clips online which have the simple gray control bar at the bottom, they do work to pause etc. AFTER the clip finishes downloading.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Ruth

The ipad is certainly no replacement for a computer/laptop.
It is used in conjunction with a laptop/computer. It is simply a big ipod/iphone.
I would not even consider the ipad for your needs.

  • Quicktime Player Ver 7.1.6 buffer overrun error during update

Using XP pro and Quicktime player open, I try to update existing software... under the help tab. All I get is a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Box with Buffer overrun detected!
The next line has Program: C:\program files\Quicktimeplayer.exe the it tells me the programs internal state is corrupted. Then the whole progame shuts down.
Next I try to use the update tab in Quicktime preferences and I get A rundllBox with An exception occurred trying to run "shell32.dll,control+rundll "c:\program files\Quicktime\qtsystem\quicktime.cpl" After I click on ok the box goes away and the program still works.
If i click on the Apple Software Update shortcut the progam updates with no problem.
Movies seen to work fine and the program seems to be ok except for the problem above.
    Need help!

  • Buffer Overrun Error When Updateing QuickTime

    Hi all,
I am using the most recent version of quicktime so 7.3.1, if I select update from the menu of quicktime player it loads to the following error:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library (Error message window header)
    Buffer overrun detected!
    Program: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated.
If I reopen quick time it seems to be OK but the error above is displayed when I quick on update from the menu again.
Also when I am in the Quick Time Preferences and click update, I get this error message:
Run Dll (Error message window header)
An exception occured while trying to run "shell32.dll,control_runDLL"C:\program files\quicktime\qtsystem\quicktime.cpl""
I have recently reformatted my machine and I have exactly the same problem before and after the format. Please help as this is driving me crazy.

I'm experiencing exactly the same bug. Matter of fact, it's the first time in years that I've run across this kind of 'problem' when using non-beta software from a major player. Too bad. This really reflects poorly on Apple's credibility.

  • Quicktime crashes when I attempt to change export settings.

Everytime I attempt to change my export settings in Quicktime 7 Pro (File>Export>Options>Settings) Quicktime crashes. I can open the Options window and see what compression I am using etc but as soon as I click on Settings or Filter or Size the next window opens for less than a second and Quicktime crashes along with an annoying tone from Windows.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Quicktime and iTunes with no change. I have also done a complete reinstall of XP home edition including downloading all the security updates, Service Pack 2 etc and I get the same error. This is a new problem because I had been doing this with no trouble just a few weeks ago.
I have also run into some errors if I attempt to update Quicktime. The errors are different depending on the way I try to update.
Going to Edit>Quicktime Preferences>Update Tab>Update I get the following error.
An exception occured while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL" C:\Program Files\Quicktime\QTSystem\Quicktime.cpl"" If I leave that error window (labelled Run.DLL) open I then get Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. and it asks me to send an error report etc etc...
The other update error I get is if I go to Help>Update Existing Software I get
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Buffer Overrun detected!
    Program C:\Program Files\Quicktime\QuickTimePlayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
I've never seen Quicktime act this buggy until recently. This occurs with 7.1. 7.1.3 and the newest 7.1.6.
    Custom   Windows XP
Running updates with the Apple Software Updater seems to work without any errors.

Okay. I don't know if anyone's reading this thread anymore but there is a work-around. It is a conflict with Quicktime and Nvidia cards. If you go into your display properties then click settings and click advanced, then click Troubleshoot. Slide the hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left. Disabling this does fix it. I know Quicktime and Nvidia are being asked for a fix but in the meantime, this does work.

  • ITunes and Quicktime will not launch

I cannot get my iTunes or Quicktime to launch. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, upgraded, and tried several fixes that I found on this discussion board. No Luck! I'm using XP Pro SP3. When I first installed iTunes, it worked, but then quit working about 4 weeks later. I'm using the latest versions of both iTunes and Quicktime.

The error message you are getting suggests that you do have one of the problem codec packs installed on your system or you have had in the past.
Quicktime does not install Quicktime.cpl in the system32 directory.
It is possible that one of them was installed without you knowing with other software, I think Storm may get installed with other things although I can't name anything.
You must look for the things on my list and uninstall them if you find them. Check in Add/Remove programs to see if there is an entry there.
When you have uninstalled the problem items go on to the next stage. If you can't find anything you had better go on as well.
Download the stand alone Quicktime (the one without iTunes):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.

  • ITunes and Quicktime WILL NOT install no matter what!

After downloading QuickTime with iTunes, I keep getting this error:
"An exception occurred while trying to run m"C\Widows\system32\shell32.dll,Cotrol_RunDLL "C\
    Windows\system32\QuickTime.cpl",QuickTime
iTunes won't install, QuickTime won't install, Customer support doesn't know what to tell me---
Has anyone else had this problem-- and better yes, does anyone know how to fix this? My laptop is about 6 months old, running Windows XP Media Edition. (Big sigh)

    Deal Emalve,
Try change the path from C: to any other directory and then install..
    Hope that works out.
