Quicktime dilemma

I have iTunes on my Windows Vista PC laptop. Therefore, I must have Quicktime installed in order for iTunes to run (ridiculous!!!!!). BUT, I don't want quicktime to be my default player. I've even changed my quicktime preferences so thati t only associates with the .mov file types. Why is it that when I click on an .mpeg link in my internet browser, Quicktime is still opening it? I want Windows Media Player to open it because I like how it doesn't open the .mpeg file within the browser. How do I get Quicktime to stop being a nuisance? It's really angering me.

I have exactly the same unnoying problem. Quicktime is needed for iTunes,
I can understand that, but it always comes in the way for other videos that
I want to be played by Windows Media Player.
Some preferences must be able to be set somewhere !
Please can someone tell me what to do?
Thank you

  • Need to export Movie to Quicktime Movie w/ similar file size and quality.

Let me preface in that I am not in the video editing profession. Many times I have exported my work to the professionals. I'm sure knowing what you're doing is half of the battle. Here is my dilemma. First, I'm using Quicktime pro just to add a text track to the movie. I  then save the file as what Quicktime pro calls Movie .mov. This looks good and has the quality of the original .mov and the small data size. However, no other player than quicktime will recognize the text track. I then tried exporting from Movie to quicktime movie format (still .mov, can anyone explain the difference of the two .mov types???), but I find that the image quality is poor. Yet, in the quicktime format other players (except windows media player) recognize the text track. By poor quality I mean that I think what I have is the blocking effect. I assume that this is due to the bitrate being to low. Again, I would like to keep the file size low and managable for data storage and downloading purposes. I was hoping that in the end all video players would be able to have no issues.
My current file sized are all less than 1MB and are of good quality.
Just adding a small test track the Movie .mov is still less than 1MB
The size of the image is 512x512
I should also say that I'm a PC user with a quicktime pro windows version. I'm sure that doesn't help me one bit!! However, I believe my issues are more with the fact that I'm not experienced in compressing files and knowing exactly the right settings.
Here is what I've tried thus far. Movie to quicktime movie
    H264 codec
Current for fps (Which is in the original is 8fps)
    Key frames automatic
    frame reordering checked
I've tried Automatic data rate and setting the bit rate, even at 2000kbps (the quality is low). My original movie with the highest kbps is only 1151kbps and has no artifacts
    encoding Best quality multi-pass
    custom size 512x512
    deinterlace checked

am i correct that this 'my photo stream' process is not removing any image data?
Yes,  as long as you have iPhoto's iCloud preference pane configures as follows:
You're be getting the full image file, pixel dimensions, etc. which is essentially a bit by bit copy of the photo on the Phone.
When you add tags and other metadata and export the file out of iPhoto as a jpeg with the checkboxes selected to include that metadata there will be some image compression.  However, if one chooses High or even Medium JPEG Quality one will be hard pressed to detect any image degradation unless printing very, large prints or otherwise displaying the image at a very, large size.
I ran a test on a 1.4 MB photo from my iPhone  and compared the original to two exports, one at High and the other at Medium JPEG Quality and got these results:

  • Quicktime has messed up my podcasts visuals

Since installing Quicktime 7.1.6 the visuals ( still photographs) on my .mac webpage will no longer play. I get a picture of the Quicktme logo and the mesage "this enhanced podcast requires Quicktime 7.0.2 or later". Everything seemed to work fine until I downloaded the new version of Quicktime. Any suggestions?

    jc,
At best, all I can offer are suggestions. May you and any other that reads them, find each at least worth considering.
I share your dilemma and it appears (from the number of messages posted) many others do too. I can only conclude this latest upgrade of QT 7.1.6 has a few minor/major hiccups yet to be resolved. As a plus, there seems to be a plethora of "potential" fixes by many well intended and highly capable individuals. Yet, at least for me... none has resolved the issue you describe with our podcast visuals. I suspect by now that apple is at least aware of this problem and is hopefully already working diligently to resolve this issue. If I could suggest anything, it would be to exercise patience while apple works to resolve and continue reading as many posts as possible regarding this issue. Sooner or later, someone WILL discover what will resolve our dilemma. Until then... I suggest a measure of patient awareness as our optimal course of action.
Til then... may all who share this problem choose harmony over frustration as our fingers share our thoughts. And, that each takes the time to preview and modify them before posting to the world.

  • Quicktime Export settings for projected slide presentation

I'm looking to find the best quicktime export settings to use in order to have a Keynote 3 presentation as a stand alone movie. I will be projecting the movie from a PC onto a large screen at 1024 x 768 resolution. The project is for a photography club public presentation, and needs to be top quality.
    Thanks for your input

    Barbara,
The 640X480 vs 720X480 dilemma is an interesting subject! DV Video and Video DVDs use 720X480 resolution. TVs do not have square pixels, but computer monitors do have square pixels - so some adjustment is needed, and 640X480 is the square pixel down-converted equivalent for computers to the 720X480 in non square pixels used by TVs......make sense?
    iDVD supports high definition video
Well what this means is iDVD can read HD video files, and convert them to standard definition Video DVDs. It does NOT mean that iDVD can produce HD DVDs. HD DVDs and HD DVD players are not on the market yet.
Today's Video DVDs are not high resolution, they are 720X480. The only way to get higher resolution is to avoid the Video DVD standard, and just make a data DVD. This will not be playable on commercial DVD players, only on computers with the right software and codecs. If I needed to make professional presentations on large screen high resolution monitors, I would not use Video DVDs. Bring a new powerbook and use H.264
If you want to go the DVD route anyway, then 720 X 480 is the best you can get. I'd tell FotoMagico to export in HD (720p). This is a bit of overkill, as iDVD will encode at a lower resolution, but I've gotten good results that way.
You may have to use the anamorphicizer to get iDVD to realize the movie is Widescreen.

  • Export Dilemma, please help

I have a dilemma. I use iMovie 08 to import my ACHD. I then edit in iMovie 08 and most often iMovie HD.
My source is 1080/60i. I import at Full.
My output is in DVD. I want to make a sd dvd and also have a Quicktime File for burning Blu-ray later. Either through Toast on a regular DVD or a Blu-ray burner, once I get the software and or burner.
My work flow involves editing and then sharing to Quick Time for the Blu-ray movie. For the regular DVD I would like to share to Quick Time.
I would use AIC and current fps and for the compressor the other box checked and the interlaced box unchecked ???
    Have blur set to 2.
For size would I set to ??? In 08 I understand 1280x720 HD is the best quality, but what happens in iDVD to it? And what about form iMovie HD, any difference?
For the Blu-ray version I would use the settings above but for the size I would use HD 1920X1080 16:9
I have sent projects straight to iDVD (from iMovie HD) and I end up with a 720x404 movie. The quality seemed OK for SD DVD on a smaller HDTV.
I could use some help form someone who is experienced in this type of work flow. I have tried many experiments and not hit on a great quality DVD. My next imports I am planning on converting before importing, not sure to what. Does iMovie HD and 08 handle the clips the same (in terms of de-interlacing)?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I think I might be asking too many questions in one post. Let me try a different approach.
1)When I do a Full import of 1080/60i AVCHD into iMovie08 do I now have 1080i/30 AIC clips or are they progressive?
2)If I then import these clips into iMovie HD 06 do they get converted at all if the project is set for HD 1080i 30 ?
3)Would there be any benefit to exporting to QT expert settings vs just importing to iDVD form either HD 06 or 08?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Final Output DILEMMAS!!!!

    Hi everyone!
I'm about to finish a rough cut of about 90minutes video and I have a couple of DILEMMAS!!! Please HELP.
original footage was shot HDV 16:9 NTSC (with a Sony HDR FX1), then imported in SD for sake of space and render time.
Timeline settings: DV-NTSC (capture DV NTSC 48KHZ, Playback output to Video Firewire NTSC 720-480, PTV output Video same as playback) and the timeline was set to anamorphic.
Dilemma N°1: if my timeline is 720-480 and so is the imported footage, why is the image in the canvas not only letterboxed but totally surrounded by black frame? It's like having two rectangulars one in the other but proportional.Isn't my image supposed to fill the entire screen? How can I fix this at finisehd editing?
Dilemma N°2: this rough footage is supposed to be shown to a TV editor... what type of Quicktime conversion should I use to put it at a good quality on a DVD? (H.264, DVC Pro, cinepak...?????)
i tried to read about this without bothering any of you but got to no solution.
    THANK YOU in advance.

"ok, the material was imported DVC Pro NTSC 720x480, and so is the sequence."
Those are not the correct settings. Most HDV cameras when they downconvert do so to DV anamorphic. You're material should be anamorphic, should have the anamorphic flag set, should have used that setting for capture and for the sequence. If that was not set correctly then everything downstream of that will be hosed.
if the background is bigger than the clip it sounds as if you had an HDV sequence created and edited into that. If when you first launch the application you set it to HDV, the the initial sequence will be in HDV. Changing the settings after that will not change the settings of the existing sequence. If you edit your material into that, you've edited material captured with the wrong settings into a sequence with the wrong settings.
Did you look at the media file on your hard drive in the QT player?

  • Help! Once More: Installing Quicktime (and thus, ultimately I-Tunes) on PC

I just bought an I-phone and it works wonderfully with my Mac at work. However, I cannot install any version of Quicktime on my computer (I've tried w/Itunes and standalone).
I've been to the websites for both Apple and PC which offer solutions. I've tried them all on the Apple site. Even after
    1. Completely remove iTunes and QuickTime
    2. Empty your Temp directory and restart
    3. Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer
    4. Download QuickTime Standalone Installer
    5. Disable other conflicting software
    6. Make sure your folder names don't contain strange characters
I am still getting this error message: ""A network error occured while attempting to read from the file: C:\\WINDOWS\Installer\QuickTime.msi"
I'm also aware of a similar discussion about this on a thread: iTunes.msi
Nothing seems to solve my dilemma. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • How To View QuickTime 7 Files

Due to the instability that 10.3.9 causes to my Dual 867, I have humbly remained at 10.3.4. Due to my dilemma, I am not able to upgrade from QuickTime 6.5.2 to QuickTime 7, preventing me from viewing yesterday's Special Event. So I was wondering if any of you smart people out there know of a workaround that will allow me to view the presentation using my current setup?

My suggestion would be to try 10.3.9 again, OR try another media player that supports H.264 format.
Currently the H.264 is "experimental" in VLC media player.
    Hope this helps.

  • The Keynote/Quicktime bug which prevents podcast exports from Keynote

I too have been stymied by the bug which prevents export of .mov files out of Keynote when the presentation contains builds. I spent this weekend recording lectures which I would normally give to medical undergraduates in person but for which I will be away so have to prepare substitute podcasts. I have done this in the past very successfully. This weekend I recorded the audio for the lectures in Keynote and all worked as it should when I played them back within Keynote. The first lecture I exported successfully to a .mov file but this presentation was short and didn't contain animations. The next two lectures would not export, the computer often spent many minutes saying it was exporting but would then produce an error message saying that it could not be completed because either there was not enough memory or the file was the wrong format. I tried at different resolutions, shorter presentations etc. This was all very frustrating because last year I had successfully done the same thing with highly animated presentations.
Today I tried it on my office computer which is a recent 24" iMac with lots of memory and a powerful processor but the problem remained. It was then that I consulted the forums and found page upon page of people with a similar problem and lots of supposed fixes including reverting to earlier versions of Quicktime etc.
I am in a similar position to many other posters in that I have to produce these teaching materials by the end of this week and so cannot wait for Apple to produce updates that will fix these issues.
Some posters recommended the software Screenflow as a solution and I am posting this message to confirm this does provide a good solution. Obviously we shouldn't have to pay $99 to get round a problem that Apple has created from a system that previously worked effortlessly and seamlessly but if you are in a similar position to me then this solution will work. You simply take your Keynote presentation with audio commentary and run it whilst Screenflow is recording in the background and set Screenflow to record the computer audio. This produces a file that can then be exported into a number of different video formats optimised for different viewing platforms (e.g. iPod, iPhone, computer screen). It took 5 minutes to install the software and 5 minutes to learn how to use it. The transitions between slides and the animations within slides are all very smooth and the video and audio is perfectly synchronised.
Screenflow would also be useful in other contexts such as recording video tutorials to teach students how to use software programmes, e.g. aspects of Photoshop, so it will have uses which the Keynote/Quicktime combination couldn't deal with but I still feel aggrieved that I have had to spend $99 on software which I didn't need a few months ago.

I too wasted hours this weekend trying to export narrated KN files, which worked flawlessly last spring semester. I too am needing to get these narrated KN files published for my college students by the end of this week. Perhaps purchasing QuickTime Pro and pasting the audio file works, but that still does not solve the problem of exporting to iPod or YouTube, which continues to give a "not enough disk space" error message regardless of how small or large my presentation is (plenty of GBs on my computer too). Also, when I export to Flash, the movie works, but converting the Flash file results in error messages (saying the file is corrupt. I have tried this many times with new KN presentations).
Apple needs to fix this. I bought iWork'08 specifically for KN's exporting capabilities, otherwise I might as well have just stuck with PPT. I'd like to believe that Apple is working on the issue and that we will not be forced to purchase yet more software. In either case, any information by Apple clarifying this dilemma would be very helpful to and appreciated by all of us. Apple, will this be fixed in the future or should we buy new software?

  • HELP!  HELP!  HELP! ****** With Quicktime 5.0 Pro for Windows

I'm in desperate need of a registration code (key number - approx 20 characters) for Quicktime 5.0 Pro for Windows. I have the "free" version of Quicktime 5.0 for Windows, but the poorly designed "Movie Shaker" software from Sony will only work with Quicktime 5.0 for Windows . . . which I have, but I need to unlock some of the grayed out features which require the "Pro" Version.
I've gone to Apple's website and purchased Quicktime 7.0 Pro for Mac and Windows . . . numbers won't work in older versions. I've called Apple Support and they will not provide anything for software that they no longer support . . . thus my "catch 22". I've tried all of my friends, assoiciates, E-bay, everything . . . no luck.
If you are a good samaritan and have a registration number to Quicktime 5.0 Pro for Windows, please e-mail to [email protected] THANKS!!!!!!!!

What a dilemma and a mess you've gotten locked into.
Begging for a key code (to a no longer sold product).
I read (before I purchase) the compatibility of the export formats of a camera.
Knowing Sony's history (and their use of proprietary codecs) I've stopped buying anything they sell.
You may be stuck in yesteryear.
Sorry my response doesn't give an answer.

  • MacBookPro or G4 PowerBoo--a dilemma

I hope this topic doesn't violate this message boards protocols. If it does my apologies in advance and I'll remove my query.
    So, here I go.
I'm a graphic designer in need of a back-up system. My first thought was a MBP but, I've been reading the nightmare stories on this site as well as elsewhere about problems with CS2 and the intel core duo set up. I absolutely cannot afford to have a wonky back-up system. I need to rely on it and CS2 is the core tool I use everyday. Then, why not go with another desktop system you ask. Well, I really like the idea of being able to take advantage of the versatility of a mobile unit like the MBP or PB. There is also the issue of cost. As a freelancer I need to squeeze as much out of my computing dollar as is possible.
Along those lines, a top-of-the-line refurb'd 17" PB with max'd out memory is far less expensive than a MPB or even a new desktop tower. The big but with the G4 is that it's old technology, stable as a rock but old and might not last me the 2-3 years I like to get out of my equipment.
What does the esteemed mac users community think? What advice do you have for me?
Thanks so much for your time and attention.
G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   250GB Porsche external HD, 2GB RAM, DSL, Klipsch speakers

    Hey,
I too had hte same dilemma a while ago as I to am a graphic artist, well, lead artist for a small comapany. I had read about all the CS2 issues, 'bad' mbps and so on. I had a older 1.5ghz Powerbook and i loved the machine, however it had been physically beaten up and i figured it was about time to get a new machine after a few years of use.
I personally took the risky, or what i thought was, plunge and ordered it - got it a few weeks later. This was when there was an issue installing CS2 with quickltime.. (some version i forget) causing it to crash on boot. However, this has been fixed quite a wqhile ago. The obnly other thing i can think of that there is now would be that at times, rosetta makes CS2 apps when usign intensive tasks, a tiny bit sluggish. This is to say normal use i dont notice it compared to my PB, however a few certain heavy tasks it is a bit slower. Though, i can live with it as nest year CS3 is to come out which will be native, and be quite zippy, as even under rosetta i find a little improvement over my pb - though i do have an extra gb of ram.
My advice is now that apple has seemed to havegotten all hardware quirks out, as wekk as software annoyances with CS adn CS2 (the quicktime lock up and so on) i would go for it, if its financially doable. If not, try to wait a little bit and grab oen then. s you said G4s re old technology now, and the new native stuff will fly on hardware. I know this hasn't helped very much, and i'd love to elaborate but i need to get working on some stuff!
Just wanted to let you know I to do the same line fo work, and took teh plunge, and I'm more then happy i have.
    good luck

  • FLV QuickTime encoder... Where's it at?

I have installed Design Premium CS4
Playing with video in Photoshop Extended,  File/Export/Render Video  There's no FLV option.  I've looked high and low for this "FLV QuickTime encoder"
This issue was briefly touched on here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1534685#1534685
but without any real resolution,  seems the only solution is to have had Flash CS3 previously installed and you would have had the encoder already.  But Flash CS4 doesn't seem to install this encoder anymore.?
Adobe Photoshop help file says this:http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSB8B861CE-EBFB-4941-8587-A7572FA2EF69a.html
    QuickTime export file formats
    Flash Video (FLV)
Adobe® Flash® Video is the Adobe format for streaming audio and video over the web and other networks. (To use this format, you must first install an FLV QuickTime encoder).
Is there some way/place to download this encoder so that this option will be enabled in Photoshop.
I know I can just export as a .MOV file then convert it later in Media Encoder,  but why tell me about an option,  and then not give us the encoder to use the option.

No, I don't think you can download any CoDec pack containing the proper extension for legal reasons. If memory serves, the respective QTX file was part of 1 or 2 QT installers way back then, and then, probably due to intervention from Adobe, no longer. However, I think you could still install it via the automated CoDec updates for a while after that.... Well, in any case, it's probably moot. To solve your dilemma (and for sure this will be the "proper" future way of doing things), just download the Flash Catalyst public Beta from Adobe Labs. This should allow you to get the best of both worlds.

  • Can't register quicktime pro

    Hi folks,
I'm been struggling for much too long now to try to resolve my problem, so I've come to the experts (yes...I have surfed and surfed this website and user documentation and more!  I'm hoping the resolution is not too obvious and I'm being dense).
I have an iMac (older than dirt, but still functioning), with Mac OSX v. 10.6.8.
I been using Quicktime Pro successfully for some time and have a key for it. When I was upgraded to QuickTime Player Version 10.0 (131), the ability to use the full version of Quicktime disappeared. (e.g., I have no place to insert my registration code). I've searched everyone (even my system folder) and it's not presenting me with an opportunity to register again.  Most annoying.
What am I missing? Any suggestions?  I've added a screen shot so you can see my dilemma.
Any and all help is very much appreciated.
    ng

There is no need to remove QuickTime X. Snow Leopard and Lion users can have two completely different versions of QuickTime.
If you had QuickTime Player Pro prior to your Snow Leopard install then its only been moved to the Utilities folder.
If you bought it after the Snow Leopard install then you would have to enter the registration info by opening QuickTime Player 7.6.6 and look under the Player menu for "Registration".

  • Using My Digital Video Camcorder and Quicktime...any Help???

I recently purchased a digital camcorder that I am trying to get to work with my Mac. I also just purchased Quicktime 7.0.4 PRO which I am hoping can convert the files from my camcorder to a viewable Mac format.
I am using OSX 10.4.6. The camera is a DXG-305 and the software written for the camera is for PC only. When I connect the camera to my Mac I get a folder to pop up of whatever I have captured but it shows files that are in a .ASF format. When I click on the file to try to open it , it wants to open in Microsoft Windows. When I go into Quicktime PRO and under File try to "Open File"- the file does not even become highlighted or selectable? Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open? If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac? Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO? I am looking for ANY solution to this dilemma? Thank you-
    John

Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open?
Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.
ADDED: Sorry about the duplication, too slow with my response.

  • QuickTime Export Settings for Optimal DVD

Hello. I am using a third-party slideshow software (FotoMagico) to produce a QuickTime video which I will then burn to a DVD using iDVD. Fotomagico has many different export settings. I would like to produce the highest quality DVD possible. From reading past posts, I understand that 640x480 is the maximum size for iDVD (although I also see 720x480 listed as a standard DVD size). I also understand, from an article on Apple site, that iDVD supports high definition video. Here's where I get confused. Should I export from the slideshow software using H.264 video compression, or should I use another of the available codecs, like DVCPRO? Also, is it possible to make a DVD that looks sharp on a high resolution monitor (say 1280x1024 or some such), or must I just downscale my expectations and maybe make a QT movie for computer viewers? Thanks so much, Barbara
