Quicktime disables one of the disks in my RAID 5 array.

Hi,
I have just installed ver 7.2 of Quicktime and after I began playing a Quicktime movie file one of the disks on my RAID array came up as failed. I have managed to recover this problem, but is there anything I can do to stop this happening again???... (apart from going back to XP )
Cheers,
Mark.

I just had the same problem. This is the second time I'm having this issue, the first time was when I installed Quicktime the first time a couple months ago, I don't remember which version it was (cannot remember if it was during the installation of the first file I played). I lost one of my drive in my RAID 0 or 1 (mirroring), fortunately I was able to rebuilt the image.
The second was few minutes ago when I was trying to play the HD trailer of Rush Hour 3. But this time my computer could reboot, my 2 drives was marked as failed!!! I was really scared to lose my data. Fortunately when I went in the RAID controller setup, it was able to find one of my drive and now the second one is rebuilding. The first thing I did when I rebooted was to uninstall that crap of quicktime and will never install it again.
My config: Vista Ultimate 64, motherboard Asus P5B Deluxe with Intel Matrix Storage. Quicktime 7.2 updated few days ago.

  • Need to disable one of the select-options in dynamic selection screen

    Hi,
we have copied the Standard program: RFDOPR00 into Z, my requirement is to disable one of the select-options in dynamic selection screen for ex: Reason code(User shouldnot able to enter anything in it).
Can anyone please tell me the procedure to do it... I had tried using at selection-screen but it doesnt work as it in 'LOOP AT SCREEN', i am not able to capture the Parameter name(screen-name).
    Thanks,
    Ravi

    Hi,
Get inside your selection screen, by executing your program.
Now type /h in the field where you enter transaction code and press enter.
Now again press enter, this will take you debugger starting from your Selection screen.
You might be knowing this, still if you are not aware of this, this might be a valuable tip.
From here , you can trace your Parameter name.

  • Battery life after disabling one of the cores

After installing the CHUD tool from the installation DVD #1 I tried disabling one of the cores to see if I can increase the battery life, but it seems as soon as I disable one core the frequency jumps to 1.83 GHz and constantly stays at the maximum. So it seems the battery time drops by ~30 min compared to using dual core when at idle. Since this is the battery life during idle, there may be a benefit if one constantly maxes out the frequency in dual core mode when running on battery. I don't max out the CPU frequency most of the time so disabling a core may actually decrease my battery life. Only if I can keep 1.5GHz or below with single core use...

i was also playing around with turning on and off the second CPU after installing CHUD .. i was quite surprised that my battery time is ~30min to ~1hr less when only one CPU is on .. this is completly the oppisite of what i thought would happen. just thought it was kinda interesting.

  • How do i monitor the health of my Raid array?

First, I want to thank Harm, Bill, and all the countless others who continue to give great advice on this forum.  My question is how to I monitor the health of my raid array and how to determine which disk is acting up.   I am using a 3-disk soft raid 0 off my motherboard (gigabyte ud3p).  Seems to work pretty well but occasionally has a hiccup in certain programs.  I wonder if it is a sign of an impending problem or if it is just because it is a soft raid.  I've tried several HD diagnostics (Crystal Disk Info, Active@, HD Tune, etc.) but aside from temperature, they don't give any info about the impending death of my raid 0.  I have the SMART feature turned on in bios.
To premtively address the critics about the raid 0.  I only do about one video a week and do a backup every night.  So i figured it (and when) it crashes, i'll just lose a days work. The motherboard is suppose to do a raid 5 but it performed really poorly.  My system is configured with additional drives (SSD boot, Raid 0 scratch, and final video) as recommended.  Any advice would be appreciated.
    michael

The problem with almost all raid controllers is that they do not support SMART. So that is out. With software raids you are even more limited.
With hardware raid controllers you have web based interfaces that show some basic information, like this:
but software raids do not. There are two ways to determine possible problems, at least that I know of:
    1. Use drive cages with LED's for the individual drives to show activity and inspect them visually.
    2. Use old-fashioned manual labour to feel vibrations, temperatures and hear clicks on individual drives.
With only 3 drives in the raid, the chances of guessing correctly are 33.3% to start with and they only increase with manual inspection. A far easier job than in the case of 6 or more disks.
Sorry I can not offer better suggestions.

I remember seeing iMac Core Duo reviews in which the reviewer turned one of the cores off and only used one to run his computer. Is this possible with the Macbook pro?

Hi, my Apple Raid died on me.    I managed to recover the files of each disk and moved into external USB drives.
The files are there, but Quicktime won´t open them.      Is there a way to repair these these files ?.

    Hello Niebby,
According to the description of the issue provided looks like some change has been done in your system. Most probably a change in the installed codecs. I would suggest you to check whether the required codecs are installed under the folder "/Library/QuickTime".
If reinstallation is needed you can check this post "QucikTime Codecs Installation" to get some details about how to proceed.

  • Scratch disk with two RAID arrays

I have 2 500GB disks in a RAID0 array for Windows / programs and another 1T RAID1 array for data. Where should I place the scratch disk?

Should I create a dedicated partition on the RAID0 array for the scratch space?
Please do yourself a big favor and do not do any partitions. They will only slow things down, as the OS thinks it's 2 physical HDD's and will tell them (the two logical HDD's), that it needs data at the same time. Remember, it's one physical HDD (even though it's striped, it's managed as one.
    Now, here are my thoughts:
1.) RAID 0's will speed things up. However if one of the two drives fails, ALL is lost. I do not recommend using a RAID 0 (any flavor of 0), for the system/program disk. If you do, be sure to have a great backup scheme and use it.
2.) Now, as of CS, PS no longer has a real limitation on how much HDD space it can use for Scratch Disks. Going back, on was limited to 4GB and had the ability to set 4 of these. Back then, having say a 32GB SCSI HDD, and doing some 4GB partitions made sense. Now, it does not.
I'd get a very fast, smaller system HDD. Then, you can use either of those RAID arrays for your media, and the other for your Scratch Disks. Having a dedicated hardware RAID controller will speed things up too.
On my system, used almost exclusively for PS, AI, InDesign, Painter and Video editing, I have 4x 1TB SATA II's for Scratch Disks, 2x 1TB SATA II's for still & video and audio. My system drive is a 500GB SATA II. Were I building now, I'd probably go with RAID 0 for the media and also a RAID 0 for my Video Exports, with non-striped 1TB SATA II's for my Scratch Disks.
    Just some thoughts,
    Hunt

  • Does "AirPort Disk" work with RAID arrays?

I currently have a RAID 10 array consisting of four USB hard drives all attached to a USB hub. I use it with three different macs (two leopard, one tiger) and have never had any problems. I know that you can attach multiple USB hard drives to an AirPort Extreme Base Station via a hub, but will it recognize a RAID array and make it available as a single volume over the network?

...but will it recognize a RAID array and make it available as a single volume over the network?
Why did you ask that question if the device has never appeared as multiple drives?
I understand that the AEBS is NOT a Mac.
    (a) Some RAID devices are hardware RAID devices. These devices use several hard drives but appear to the outside world as a single hard drive.
    (b) Some devices allow you to install several hard drives and then these must be pieced together into a software RAID and then appear as a single hard drive. OS X has the ability to do this.
If this device operates like the description in (a) it should have no problem connected to the AEBS.

  • Does the NF980-G65 support RAID arrays over 2TB?

Looking to build a new machine fro Windows 7 (and switch to 64bit at the same time), and the NF980-G65 seems to be the closest board to my needs, just a quick question, does the onboard raid controller support raid arrays over 2TB in size? I had a look at the manual and it has a section on migrating an array to a size over 2TB which would suggest it does, but I would like some confirmation as to whether it does or not.

I've run into this problem with some raid cards when building servers for work, as they were unable to address raid arrays over 2TB and would not allow the creation of the array, I am wondering if the raid controller has the right level of LBA to create a 2TB+ array. I am aware of the need to use a GPT partition to have a partition of over 2TB.

  • Issue with Disabling one of the menu item in Forms6i

    Hi,
I have a requirement where I need to disable the IR/PO Information (menu item) created using Form Personalization in Sales Order form.
If the Warehouse is other than ‘FIM’ it should be disabled for that particular line.
Please let me know if anybody has done the similare requirement???
    Regards,
    Bala

    Bala,
I can suggest one work around.
Say your menu entry is special1.
You probably already have a personalization that fires for trigger event = special1.
You can add a condition in that personalization that says warehouse=FIM.
This way, the PO information screen will come up only for FIM.
You can consider creating a new personalization that fires for same trigger event = special1.
The condition says warehouse != FIM
In the actions, you can say "This menu option is not available"
    Hope this helps,

  • Want to disable one of the sub link in top menue "Goto"

    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me a way of disabling the sub link of Goto link in top menu.
ex: Goto > Cost > Analysis ("Cost" I want to disable) this you can find in COR3 - Process Order Header screen.
    Thanks

    Hi Martin Voros,
What you are saying is wrong i guess. Because in our company some times users complaining that they can't save reports as a local file since the "List > Save > Local File" link is disable (ash color). Once i give the autherization for object S_GUI field name ACTVT = 61, they can go ahead with that and save it as a local file.
Like wise if some one tell me the obect for "Goto > Cost > Analysis" that is enough i beleive.
    Thanks

  • How to disable one F key without disabling the rest

    OK, this is the situation:
I don't want to disable all the keys because i use them often.
I've already tried FunctionFlip, but it doesn't seem to work in Final Cut Pro (and the reason I need to disable one of the keys is primarily because I need it for a FCP shortcut)
is there another way to disable only one key?
OR - If I were to disable all F keys, how do I reassign some of them back to their default mac function? does anyone know the names of the menu commands for Volume up and down and for mute?
    Thank you so much!

To use the F keys as assigned in FCP....

  • File size (not size on the disk)

It seems to me that the file-info subVI (or getfilesize for labview 8) gives the size of the file on the disk, not the real size. Did anyone investigate this issue? If, so, and the size is the one on the disk, do you have any suggestion for the real size (except going to the end with seek and retrieve the offset). Windows properties windows contains this info, so it's probably possible to have it without opening the file.
thanks for your comments and replies

Well I use LabVIEW 7.1.1 on WinXP and both "fill/dir size" and [open+get end of File+close] returns the same size in bytes and this size is the real size and not the size on disk...
PS : the file I tested was a LabVIEW VI...

  • How to disable one Audio port on MSI MB with Realtek HD Audio

    Hello MIS gurus.
I have MSI p45t-c51 MBoard with ALC889 Audio chipset. On this board i installed Win XP Pro with Realtek HD Audio Driver 5.10.0.6101.
On back audio plate i use Edifier 2.1 audio over one of the audio port's and HeadPhones over another one.
My question is: Is it possible to disable one of the ports so the sound only come from 1 of the audio devices instead of both.
At this moment, what i do is in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, i set LINE IN for the device i do not want to hear. - Advice if that is bad for the device that is plugged in at that port!
    Thanks to all.
    Regards.

Just disable the Onboard Audio from BIOS.

  • Disk image on RAID 2 X 2TB

    Hello
Does anyone know whether I can create 2 separate disk images on each of the slice of a 4TB hard drive?
When I create a 3TB disk image on a 4TB with 2 RAID slides, there are serious speed issues.  Therefore am wondering whether I can create a:
1 TB Disk Image on one of the 2 TB Raid Slides, and one 1 TB Disk Image on the other slice?
I'd like one of the Disk Images to be encrypted as well.
if there is a way of targeting where the disk image goes it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, although I recommend the more intelligent Carbon Copy Cloner over Superduper just for the fact that it was first, more powerful and donationware, SD might be eaiser and offer more handholding,  it's part payware.

I really do not recommend pre-2011 Intel Mac's (unless they are powerful, 4GB of RAM) to upgrade to Lion, however with a bootable clone of 10.6 (which is what your asking for) would get your machine back on 10.6 eaiser than a total rebuild and reinstall of 10.6.
Also a LOT of third party programs and older printer/scanner drivers/software/hardware may not work with Lion neither.
I do recommend to backup data off the machine, a fresh install of 10.6 then upgrade to 10.7, then install Lion programs and then return files method over the upgrade over 10.6 method.
To boot from the Carbon Copy Clone, hold th option key and select the external drive to boot from.
    Good Luck
