Quicktime dropping frames in OS 10.5 Leopard?

I'm creating uncompressed .avi movies in Matlab and opening them in Quicktime Pro. Under 10.4 this worked well, and I was able to export high quality movies into .mov format. Now, under 10.5, when I look at the .avi file in Quicktime, it has missing frames and duplicate frames. The exported .mov file has the same problems.
I am using default settings in Quicktime.
Anyone else noticed this?
Cheers
Rich

Similarly...
I get jerky quicktime playback of H.264 640x480 x30fps files which were OK in Tiger. Looks like either repeated frames or dropped frames, which happen randomly.
Also, importing files to FCXpressHD3.5 I get very visually distorted playback (like rising ripple bars on vision) These are also present when vision is rendered and played back from the timeline.
I suspect a quickime / Leopard bug is responsible so will see what happens after 10.5.1.

  • QuickTime Version 7.0.3 dropping frames

    Hello there,
A search in the forums yielded a few posts describing my problem but I was unable to find a solution to solve it.
I am playing HD Movies Trailers from Apple's page:
    http://www.apple.com/trailers/
When playing the trailer QuickTime drops frames and sometimes the sound and the image pause for a second and "jump" forward at the same time.
I tend to play the medium size trailers from the HD section.
I still have the same problem even if the trailer is only playing back after it was fully loaded in cache memory.
    Any ideas guys?

To play the medium size HD trailers (720p) you need at least a 1.8 G5.

  • Export Quicktime = stalling / frame rate / dropped frames

Firstly this issue isn't news. It appears it has existed since 2002 at least on these forums and Apple has done nothing.
    Exporting to Quicktime:
    1) Keynote makes up what seem to be consistent random frame rates on export
    - Codec doesn't matter. Photo JPG, Intermediate, 8bit 422, H264
    - You can set the frame rate in export / custom / settings it doesn't matter
    - Having no video on a slide or having video on a slide doesn't change the problem...
    - The last two items do have more information to complete their story
    - If you do have a video on slide at say 25fps and export (at same rate) the random will stabilise
but it will stabilise to something bizarre, such as 23.69.
    - So Keynote can wreck your frame rate it will drop frames, or even add frames while dropping
others. It is deeply sophisticated in how it destroys stuff on export.
    Result
    - is a stuttering output if embed video on a slide with a wrecked frame rate
    - and a random frame rate if you don't have a video embed
    2) The video stalls between slides
    - Keynote seems to play a trick by making a single frame span multiple frames
    - At the start of the first slide this seems to vary. The first frame can be between 7 and 33
frames depending on some strange internal logic only known to Keynote
    - Between slides it will hold the last frame of the exiting slide usually for 7 frames and hold
the first frame of the entering slide for usually the same amount.
    - No amount of change to settings such as transition delay, adding a transition, self play etc
will effect this stalling from what I can tell.
    - You can analyse the reality of the issue by dropping the resulting file into Quicktime 7 and
changing the video window "time code" display to frames by clicking on it and single framing
through the video. I have Quicktime Pro for the record.
    Notes:
    - I have every update installed and am running 10.6.2
    - I have tried it on two machines, one a clean build, server or client
    - Playing the presentation direct in Keynote does not present any of the noted issues
    - I have spent the better part of two weeks on the issue trying all sorts of combinations
    - Video of different frames rates, sizes, codecs. All useless, don't bother.
    Outcome:
    - Keynote is completely useless unless you just want to play a presentation in it
    - Dropped frames, stuttering video, stalling, mangled frame rates, fake frames
    Solutions that aren't:
    - One suggestion for video embeds is to enter a strange custom frame rate. For example a
24fps original turns into a 23.69 export, if you up the frame rate to 24.3 the resulting export
    is 24fps.
This is a truly hit and miss affair and will require a lot of testing to nail it. Unfortunately I
tested the resulting video frame count in Quicktime against the original video and...
The amount of frames is not the same. Part of my assumption is that the stalled pad frames
are being considered by Keynote and it drops some frames to fake the same length, that at
least -seems- to be part of the result, but it doesn't account for all the lost frames.
    - I have also tried just having one slide and exporting that. The same things happen regardless
How Al Gore managed to make "inconvenient truth" using Keynote is a complete mystery. Maybe on Tiger with some old version it used to work, yet from the forums it would appear it has never worked. This piece of software is a clear case of "it just doesn't work"
I hope you find this and stop hurting yourself trying to make this. I might hurt on a bit longer yet.

I can't answer in detail (I started with version 6, which I haven't used in years, so don't know what v5 did) but... a general comment
Software that old is very likely going to struggle trying to edit a VOB/MPG file copies from a DVD
If you are digitizing by playing the DVD through a conversion device you should end up with DV AVI which should edit well
Just what kind of files are you trying to edit?

  • Can Quicktime on a Macbook Pro play DVCpro HD without dropping frames?

I know this is a cardinal forum sin, but I think I posted this in the wrong place to start.
    Hey All,
I'm trying to output a 40min DVC Pro Hd 60, 1280x720 video to a projector for a large group. I'm using Quicktime 7.2 at full screen playing back on the second "monitor", but it seems like the video is dropping frames. The playback is stuttering and kind of strobing. This is a new 2.4ghz Macbook Pro with 2gb of Ram. The video is DVC Pro Hd from start to finish.
Is this to much to ask from a Macbook Pro? Is there another codec with comparable quality that doesn't take overly long to encode that I could use?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated,
    Steve

    Hi
You absolutely can ... as long as you have the DVC Pro HD codecs installed. I have used a lowly G4 Power Book with 2 GIG on many occasions to playback full screen 720p 24/30 fps from a FW400 drive. (60fps and 1080p might be too much..)
I just project the desktop through a projector and it looks awesome. It's the fewest compression cycles you can get assuming you shot in DVCPro HD.
However I too am experiencing choppy playback from QT 7.2 on MacPro's. In fact playback of any format is choppy under QT7.2!
My MacBook Pro however is fine with the same software...
Something bad is going on with QT....

I hope somebody can help i have a 32gb Ram Mac Pro Mid 2010 with NVida 32gb Video 1066 mhz. Blackmagic Decklink Studio 4K Card and connected to San storage via fibre channel.
    I have a 4k quicktime movie file.
Every time i run in Premiere Pro CC, I keep getting dropped frames tried the blackmagic express software and frames did not drop
I have put the footage on SSD drive into the machine but still drops frames

Use recompress frames option when exporting. That'll do the trick!

  • What am I doing wrong? Dropped frames on a 1.4MB Quicktime file?

I am new to all this and get more confused by the day.
So, it looks like HD express runs and is supported on Macbook, so, why is just importing a 1.4MB quicktime file plays fine in preview, but drops frames in canvas? Having used PC programs I am not used to these kinds of problems and wonder if I have something set up wrong!
I have external HD and 2 GB DDR.
The demo flash preview on the website makes it look like you can do all sort of things!
I also set up the system correct, at least I think I did! *User Settings, Program Settings, etc.
PS the file is 18 seconds long...
    Thanks!

The standard QT file from the net? What's that? Every file on the net seems different. Sorenson, Flash Video, H.264. What does item properties say the clip is exactly? Most of these compressed formats don't play back in vieo editing applications properly. They're delivery formats not intended for production. FCE is DV and HDV only video editing application. Those are the formats it works with.

  • Dropping Frames/ Uninstall Quicktime?

OK, I'm having the dropping frames problem when trying to capture. I turned off the "abort capture" box and got it to capture, but now the clips won't play correctly. I'm running FCP HD on 10.4.9 with QT 7.1.5. Is quicktime likely the problem? If so, how do I downgrade? I can't find an earlier version for download that says it's for 10.4.9. Help!

  • Dropped Frames/Quicktime Import

I keep getting dropped frame messages during playback of quicktime footage I imported and am re-cutting. Why?

+Is there a way to transfer the files from the MBP to my MacPro without doing another camera to computer baby sitting job? Maybe via iDisk?+
Yes, this is quite easy, but don't do it via iDisk.
Option 1 - copy the clip files from the MBP to one of your firewire drives. Then move the firewire drive to your MacPro and copy the clips to your Capture Scratch folder.
Option 2 - Shut down your MacPro and then start it up in *target disk mode* (hold down the "T" key while it starts up - eventually you will get a FireWire icon on the MacPro's screen - that tells you it's in target disk mode).
Then Connect your MBP to your MacPro via a firewire cable. Copy the clips directly to the Capture Scratch folder on your MacPro. When you're done copying, on your MBP unmount the drive icon that represents your MacPro. Shut down both machines. Disconnect the firewire cable between them.
Here's an article on Ken Stone's website that also describes the process.
Copy speed via FW400 is about 1GB per minute; via FW800 is about 2GB per minute. There is no compression involved - you are merely copying the files from one location to another.
One more thing - after you copy the clips to your MacPro, shut down your MacPro and restart it. Then open one of the clip files in QuickTime (on your MacPro). If you get an error message that says you are not allowed to open the clip because you don't have adequate privileges, you will need to change the ownership of the clips (since you captured them on another Mac under a different username, that user 'owns' the files). If that happens, and you need help with it, let us know, we can tell you how to change the ownership.

  • Dropping Frames playing Quicktimes

    Hi All,
Some help if anyone knows. Heres my setup, Desktop G5 Dual 2.3 with 1 gig of Ram. I'm working with Quicktime media: Motion JPEGA Quicktime generated out of a Discreet Smoke NLE System. Whats happening is I'll start to play a relatively short clip, 30 seconds, and it will give me the dropped frame
    warning.
First thing, is 1 GIG of Ram sufficient for these files? Or is this some kind
of preference setting? I did notice that the QT files had audio at 32 Bit
where the sequence settings only allow you to go to 16.
    Any responses appreciated
    thanks

  • Dropped Frame Error Message During Playback in Snow Leopard

I have FCE 4.0.1 and I just recently upgraded to 10.6.1 and now I keep getting these error messages during playback saying Dropped Frames. Its telling me to try lowering my audio playback quality, increase my ram, etc.. Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard I never got these errors. I have a 8 core Mac Pro with more than enough ram and hard drive space and again this wasn't happening until I upgraded. Can someone assist and tell me why this is happening and what can fix this issue.

You can try trashing your preferences and rebooting and repairing permissions and running Disk Utility, the usual maintenance suggestions, but I think the real issue is the OS and software installation, and the only way to fix that is to redo it.

  • Please Help *Deadline Coming Up* Dropping Frames

hello everyone. I am getting ready tired. I've burnt this project 9x already. I'm using iMovie 08 and I'm editing on a Macbook with an 500 gig firewire drive. The drive has 230 gigs left so it should have plenty to write a temp file for rendering. I got a Core Duo/ 2 gig proc and 2 gigs of RAM. the video is about 1hr30mins. I've tried reimporting into Garageband to set the chapters because they play back great in iMovie and in Quicktime. They play fine in the Garageband window for the preview under the media tab. then I mark my chapter points and I send to iDVD. this is where I think it's messing up. but once iDVD is up and running I will customize the menu. I've tried leaving Garageband opened while rendering and closing it while iDVD is rendering. I've tried closing every program down and even the task pane up in the right hand corner. i've even turned off Airport. Either way I do it I am either dropping frames like crazy or this last time the video sped up. Audio sounds great on all the DVDs it's just an issue with the video. So it's either speeding up or mostly slowing down. Right now the only other thing I know is to wait 2 hrs for the old iMovie to import the video and do the chapters there (WHICH SHOULD BE LIKE THAT IN THE NEW iMOVIE). I definitely don't get that reasoning from Apple. Let Garageband do it's own thing and leave the video to the video apps. Ok well I'm sorry I'm just trying to beat a schedule.
P.S. was running Leopard and thought it might be an issue so I reformated and reinstalled Tiger. So it's on a fresh machine. all the patches updated for mac os x tiger and all of my apps. I've even tried different hard drives. I was editing on a 250 gig firewire drive and went out thinking this 500 gig would work.

  • Odd problems exporting videos: dropped frames, end glitches

Having some strange things happening on the work computer (which is a pre-intel MacPro running Leopard and latest version of FCP). In the last couple of weeks we've been having a lot of files that we're trying to export (by either directly playing them or "Print to Video" via Firewire to a Sony DV/Cam deck, which in turn passes it through to a Beta machine). The videos have been freezing up or giving "Dropped Frame" error messages. To combat the problem I've exported the videos (usually 10 minutes in length) to Quicktime Movie file, and then ran that file (thus making it one big file instead of 40 or so cuts/insertions, etc).
Dropped Frames ceased to be a problem, and it plays smoothly...but now when we get to the end, we get a weird white glitch. Figured it might want a fade out to smooth out the end of the file (even though it already had a fade out) but now the file is freezing up right before it gets to the fade out.
The really odd thing is, it looks and acts fine when I play from 5 seconds or so before the end of the clip. It's only playing it in its entirety that the end acts up.
I'm at my wit's end figuring out options. I've rebuilt permissions, restarted the computer, done a disc utility diagnostic/repair disc. I've deleted the preferences for FCP.
    Open to any suggestions!
    Thanks

No, I'm not using assembly mode.
The really odd and frustrating thing is that haven't done anything different that I haven't done with hundreds of similar projects. But all of a sudden things are happening (mentioned the dropped frames problem in case it is linked. Increasingly I've been having projects stop printing/playing due to dropped frames with no consistent possible reason, in terms of materials used, transitions, hard drive, etc.). No change of equipment or software (other than updates).
My boss complained about the white 'glitch' happening a couple months or so ago, and thought it was due to forgetting to do a fade-out at the end, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

  • Ran Software Updates and Now Drop Frames during Playback

I updated all of my Software back in late December. Since I have updated, all projects (old and new created ones) within Final Cut drop frames during playback. I had no issues with drop frames until I ran the Software Updates. Currently running Leopard 10.5.6, Final Cut 6.0.5, Quicktime 7.5.5. Any suggestions on how to determine why I now have drop frames. Is there an easy way to revert back to software that was in place prior to me running Software Updates on 12/22/08?
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

First, you should have an up-to-date tested reliable backup. The best way to do it is to get an external Firewire HDD, clone you entire computer to is using SuperDuper, then keep it up-do-date.
Next, get in the habit of doing regular maintenance procedures. Here are some links to help.

If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
BGreg's suggestion to install the Combo update is a valid fix. Remember to Repair Disk Permissions before and after installation.

  • Warning:  Sometimes Final Cut exports a non-drop sequence as drop-frame

Just a heads up. This has been maddening for me. On occasion I will export my program for compressor and it will be drop frame when it should be non-drop.
These are sequences which have exported fine before. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Tonight I've lost about 2 hours because of this. At least I knew to check it before compressing the file and sending it out to our contractor because it has happened in the past.
By the way shutting down FCP and opening it up again seems to cure the problem.
