Quicktime error 2096?

I'm trying to download itunes 7.5 for my son's new nano 4g, 3rd generation. the download seems successful but when I click when I try to open it it says Quicktime failed to initialize: error 2096. I redownloaded both itunes and quicktime and restarted Quicktime will open but not itunes. Anybody have an idea?

Well, I think the problem has been cured!!!
Some further and deeper searching into this forum highlighted among the many pages a one line entry from:
'idiot rying to help' to whom I find my self deeply indebted.... and such a simple answer!
See this thread and the entry is towards the bottom of the page:

If anyone comes across the same problem as I have described, simply go to the QuickTime Properties and change it to run in Windows 2000 and not Windows XP.
I hope Apple (or MS) will take notice of this and perhaps look at a fix - it is so straighforward!
Sincere thanks to 'idiot trying to help'!!!

  • I tunes wont launch - quicktime error -2096

I am using XP sp2. Have de-installed itunes and quicktime and gone for a clean new download and install of both. But I still get this error when opening itunes - Quicktime failed to initialise (error -2096) etc.
This is v. frustrating - any suggestions?

You need to check that compatability mode is not on for Quicktime:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305212
None of the checkboxes should be checked on the compatability tab.
It is also advisable to check the same thing for iTunes.exe in Program Files\iTunes.

  • QuickTime error -2096  **how to resolve**

    If you get this error:
"QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # -2096
Please make sure QuickTime is properly installed on this computer."
Turn off Compatibility Mode for QuickTime.
Right-click on the QuickTimePlayer application (located in C:\Program Files\QuickTime) and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
In the Properties window, click on the Compatibility tab
Deselect the checkbox labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for."
    Click Apply.
    Close the Properties window.
In my case nothing was checked in the compatibility mode but I went to the bottom of the tab and clicked on "learn more about compatibity program".
From there I went to COMPATIBILITY WIZARD //TURN OFF COMPATIBILITY in the wizard.

This is incredibly frustrating - this didn't resolve the problem either. Nothing was checked in the compatability mode so I ran the wizard and it still doesn't work. Can someone PLEASE resolve this problem finally and completely. All of the answers seem to work with some and not with others. There must be someone at Apple who can fix this problem!

  • I installed itunes and quick time  but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096)"

I installed itunes and quick time  but when I try to open itunes I get a message that reads "quicktime failed to initialize (error -2096).  I have removed both itunes and quicktime from my computer and re-installed them and I still get the same message.  What do I do to get itunes to work?

That one is often a compatibility mode problem. Try the following document, only be sure that none of the boxes in the compatibility mode tab are checked (not just the compatibility mode box itself):

  • When I try to open iTunes, I receive a QuickTime failed to initialize (error-2096).

When I try to open iTunes, I receive:  "QuickTime failed to initialize (error - 2096).  It also tells me to unistall iTunes and then install iTunes again.  If I uninstall iTunes, will I lose all my songs and videos?

Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software

Then use free Ccleaner to repeatly repair your registry until it's fixed.

    download iTunes again from Apple.

If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.

  • Quicktime failure to initialize error 2096

I have been using quick time and windows media for ages for some reason possibly the upgrade to itune 7 I have a problem to run quicktime . Uninstalling and re installing time and again using all tips I have been able to find has not solved this problem. Quicktime will not install and run correctly.
I cannot actually find out what error 2096 relates to ? Any ideas? and Solutions will be gratefully received. I have presently uninstalled both after wasting hours on possible solutions
    many thanks David1938

Right I followed your instructions and it worked so far, I got QT loaded onto C.drive Ok I even upgraded it to pro and started to test. First thinhg it wanted to do was upload I-tunes , no problem I had uninstalled that previously so I needed it back again. Then I decide to start testing
One of the original reason this started going wrong was the fact that on one of my websites I had introduced a web blog and some visual content this was also being used as a podcast so it was picking up in itunes. When I was clicking on the image, there are two black screens on this page http://www.fairiesworld.com/weblog/ it was playing back with a strange echo, clicky corrupted sound file. I thought it was the QT that was doing it. I had received the advice to upgrade to the 7 version , the previous version worked OK. Even the podcast was distorted sound on this machine
My webmaster(apple mac ) and my daughters PC were ok for sound, just mine was misbehaving. Then came the uninstalls and installs and now what have I got.
Testing on my webblog through OE I get a white blank page on both not a black one and neither is there any sound. A right click on properties shows nothing but the word about.blank. Alarm bells ring as I have experience about blank before but I have webroot and norton symantic antivirus updated and running all the time. I have done more spyware and virus scans and nothing has emerged.
If I open from firefox then I get a qt logo appearing in the white screens but no sound and it won't cliick to start either. So I tried a Itune film trailer that too was distorted sound. I can't help wondering if there is a clash with the latest windows media that is have installed, but I think it must be far more fundemental than that
I am reluctant to uninstall now I have them both but what might be the solution top the problem I am having it makes me wonder
    best
    David

  • After iTunes 7.6 update:  QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096

"QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096).
QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes."
After upgrading to iTunes 7.6 this morning, I get this error when trying to run iTunes or Quicktime. I was using the Apple Updater. I got no errors when running the installer.
I downloaded the 7.6 setup file and attempted to repair the install. I still receive the same error.
There is an article indicating that turning off Compatibility mode would resolve this issue, but Compatibility mode is not turned on for iTues or QuickTime.
The same issue is discussed in the Quicktime forum, here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6400305
I am running on Windows 2003.
Note I had iTunes open earlier today, and it was working fine. It was only when I upgraded to 7.6 (I think I was at 7.4 before. It was definetly 7.something).

Thanks for this discussion and I hope Apple fixes this soon. It took me forever but installing QT 7.2 and installing the less recent itunes update from filehippo finally resolved it for me. Of course the reason it took me forever was that every time I reinstalled itunes, I was using the default setting that was updating QT & Apple also (in hindsight it sounds really dumb, but no one had mentioned that).
This is the first itunes update that has ever gone wrong for me - I've used itunes for 5 yrs (my 1st ipod was a 2nd gen touch wheel). I wonder if some MS developers went to work at Apple to exact revenge...?

  • Quicktime Fails to Initialize Error   2096

New Ipod, updated software, the Quicktime player downloads, but will t\not initalize when you open itunes...keeps bringing same error 2096...anybody else have a usleless ipod with the same problem....running windows Xp

Just had this problem with a new Nano & it drove us nuts for a while. Did a search on the error code (2096) on the Support page & got pointed towards the Quicktime support page. It turns out this is a "compatibility" issue. What you need to do is click on the "Properties" for either (or both) Quicktime & iTunes. There will be a "Compatibility" tab & you will find that it may be selected for some other version of Windows (95, NT, ME or 2000). Deselect this setting & click on Apply. Should fix the problem. Good luck & all the best of the season to everyone!

  • Quicktime failed to initialize error -2096 using itunes 8, WinServer2003

Quicktime failed to initialize error -2096
I am getting this when trying to run Itunes 8 on windows 2003 standard
When i click on "QTInfo.exe" it says "Not Installed"
I tried re-installing a few times, all the regular stuff. When I searched help, all I see is a bunch of ninny suggestions like check if it is running in compatibility mode.
    Itunes used to work with:
    Itunes v7.7 + v7.3.1 Quicktime
(I did NOT use the standard itunes 7.7 installer, since it trys to install Quicktime 7.5)
Basically I'm looking for Apple or someone to tell me what are the files causing the problem so I can bypass it.
This is highly aggravating because we have 2 iphones now that are not able to sync because I updated them to v2.1 which doesnt work with v7.7 of itunes.
I do not actually use quicktime, so if there is a way to trick itunes 8 into thinking the latest quicktime is installed, that would be ok with me too.

I am going to try these solutions to see if they help. I need to backup my computer before doing so though, I dont want to lose everything.

  • Getting the message- Quicktime failed to initialize- (error- 2096).....

I can't get into iTunes ever since this 7.6 version came out. I've downloaded it 8 or 9 times, and I have even tried downloading Quicktime separately, but I get the same message every time!! Help me! The full message is:
Quicktime failed to initialize (error- 2096)
Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes.
    So annoying!!!

QuickTime failed to initialize-Error#-2096 QuickTime is required to run itunes.
Let's try to get one set of possibilities off the table.
Head into the Compatibility tab of the Properties for your iTunes.exe as per the following document:
iTunes for Windows: How to turn off Compatibility Mode
... however, when you're in there, make sure that none of the boxes are checked (not just the compatibility mode box).
If iTunes still isn't launching, head into the Compatibility tab of the Properties of your QuickTimePlayer.exe, as per the following document:
Error -2096 message when opening QuickTime for Windows in Compatibility Mode
... again, make sure that none of the boxes in there are checked (not just the compatibility mode box).
    Any help with your 2096?

  • QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # -2096

Any suggestions? I downloaded off the website and uninstalled QuickTime through the Control Panel. Then installed. Got the subject message. Doesn't seem like it should be that hard.

Same problem for last cople of months. have tried all recommended solution for error#2095 without success. uninstalled and reinstalled, repaired, etc too many times to keep track of. Yet it all runs well on my KDS notebook. Go figure.
It should not be hard....Seems there should be someone at Apple corp that wrote the error detection code associated with error 2096 that could answer this in a flash.

  • Quicktime Failed To Initialize (Error 2096) Quicktime unavailable!?!

I Have An Old 4th generation 40 gig ipod and a dell e521 pc. I have only recently had internet access, before I typed everything by hand onto my itunes program on my computer. I Want to buy a new ipod classic, but I'm Not sure if it would have been compatible with my outdated itunes program. So I Tried to download the newest verision of itunes and I Thought it was sucessfull, but after I Restarted my computer and attempted to open the newly downloaded itunes, I keep getting this error message that reads Quicktime Unavailable: Quicktime failed to initialize (error 2096)!?! i thought quicktime and itunes were being downloaded together. what am I Doing wrong? Thaks.

I had opened the QuickTime FOLDER Properties and the iTunes FOLDER Properties, which is why I did not see a Compatability tab. When I went into the folders, then into the files, I found that QuickTime was not set to Compatability Mode, but iTunes was set to run compatable with Windows 95. I unchecked the box. It appears that iTunes will now launch on my computer.
Thanks very much. You have brought some joy to my day.
