Quicktime export contains random grey frames

Lately, doing a straight Quicktime export (not Quicktime conversion) is resulting in movies with random grey frames in them, lasting about 12 frames or so each. This is HD footage, shot on the Panasonic DVX-100. This only seems to happen when exporting certain sequences, but I haven't been able to establish a pattern as to why it's happening on certain exports but not on others. It's all footage shot, ingested, and edited on sequences with the same exact settings.
It's only been happening since upgrading to QT 7.5, but the other computer in the office also upgraded, and it hasn't encountered this problem, and can export the same sequences I'm having problems with just fine.
Has anyone else experienced this, or offer a solution?

This is a Final Cut issue. If it were only a drive/scsi issue the errors would also be there in the animation codec as well. The bad frames ONLY occur when doing a quicktime export [DVCPRO HD 720](referenced, render all frames, and self contained). I'm not dismissing the fact that there very well may be a drive causing problems (G-SPEED XL12).
The bad frames do not occur any other time. I render plenty of things in the exact same codec over the network to the raid from AE and Motion and never ever have a problem.
One thing I am doing differently now is long form projects. The projects having issues are a one hour show and a two hour+ show. I don't have this problem with commercials or other small packages. It also doesn't matter if it's a random 10 sec section exported or the whole program.
This is what I'm working with:
HVX200 and other mixed footage
FCP and QT last updated in early july (no internet connection)
G-SPEED XL12
Fibre channel to one station that also acts as a file server
gigabit to one station from the file server
trunked gigabit to another station from the server (seperate NIC)
All three stations exhibit the same problem including the station connected via Fibre Channel
Other people are having the same problem as I've found by searching. The earliest report of this specific issue I've found so far was stated around Jan of this year. But there are more reports from this summer.

  • Random white frames in Quicktime Slideshow

    I've made a slideshow in iPhoto and exported a Quicktime movie that I plan to put on DVD. Everything works, except that around 1:40 into the movie, the screen goes randomly white for a frame. One images fades to black, and then there's a random white frame, and then the next image fades up from black. There's only one way to export a slideshow, and I've recreated the whole thing several times. There is no reason for it to do this, and it's driving me nuts. It doesn't show up when I view the show in iPhoto, but every time at the same spot when I look at the exported movie.

    I presume you are using an album for this slide show. An album contains only an alias for a photo in your library. The alias may be pointing to a photo that has been deleted or corrupted.
    Check out the photo that is supposed to appear at that point.

  • 23.976 Quicktime exports one frame short

    Hi,
    I'm having a recurring problem with 23.976 fps exports missing the last frame of any comp. I'm working with prores 4444 files shot at 23.976, comp settings also 23.976, footage interpreted correctly at 23.976. When I export to quicktime in any codec at 23.976 the exported clip is one frame short.
    This isn't a framerate issue as far as I can tell as all previous frames match the original footage, also an image sequence export will produce the correct number of frames. It's just not exporting the last frame. Is anyone else having this problem?
    Obviously the workaround is to extend every comp by a frame before render, or always render an image sequence, but as I'm working on a show with an extremely high number of shots to turnaround and all have to be imported back into the edit at Avid DNX36 offline codec quality, this seems like a much more time consuming (and storage space consuming!) solution to what is an obvious glitch.
    Can anyone help? A solution will save me weeks of time over the coming six months!

    It's probably just a counting error.  AE, like many applications that work with video, begins with frame ZERO, not frame one.
    Count the number of digits in the following list: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.  Even though the highest value is nine, the number of digits is ten.  Thus, in AE, close to one second of 23.976 fps video is contained in frames 00-23, and not 00-24... which would be twenty-FIVE frames.

    Hello!
    I just switched a new MacBook Pro and am having a render issue in Premiere CC. Random green frames pop up sporadically throughout my video. This happens both on my rendered timeline and in the exported file. It seems to affect the clips with heavier color correction. What is happening and how can fix it?

    I'm editing on Premiere CC. Most of the clips have heavy effects work (motion, fast color corrector, RGB curves and a circle overlay for vignetting). All footage and project files are stored on a WD My Passport 2TB Portable External USB 3.0.
    The footage is from a 5D Mark III set for 1080p IPB, so files are .movs.
    Exporting in H.264 with the Vimeo HD 1080p 23.976 preset, not changing any of the preset settings. But again, the issue also occurs pre-export, after rendering on the timeline.

    Problem fixed!
    Someone from the Adobe support team instructed me to change the renderer to software only mode. This can be changed under File>Project Settings>General. More specifically, I changed it from Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (Open CL) to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only. I deleted the old render files and reexported without any further issues.

  • AppleScript for QuickTime export of frames

    I would like to get an AppleScript to --
    1) Take a folder full of QT movies (slideshows), and for each movie create a new folder with the name of the orig movie (e.g. "nelson.mov" --> "nelson" foldername), and for each movie --
    2) export a series of frames from each 30 - 200 second QuickTime narrated slideshow movie (typically 4-8 frames per movie), with each frame saved with name nnnnnn.jpg, where "nnnnn" is the TIME for that frame in the movie, into the folder for that movie
    3) export the audio track as a .aif audio file into the folder for that movie
    Although I have done some AppleScripting, the above is Way Beyond my expertise...

    Most of these AppleScripts still work with QT 7 and Tiger. Some are "broken" but fixable.
    You may also want to look toward Automator (part of Tiger) that can help you write (no real writing) Workflows and Contextual menu apps that you can invoke with a few mouse clicks.

  • Quicktime Export causing Out of Sync Audio?

    I'm trying to export a self contained Quicktime movie from my timeline, and every time I try, the audio ends up being out of sync. What am I doing wrong?
    The audio is set to just the defaults, 16 bit, 48khz.
    Sequence settings: HDV1080p30
    When I bring the final exported movie back into FCP, it plays out of sync.
    Exporting through the Share feature to bluRay resulted in perfect sync audio, so I'm at a loss as to why this isn't working.
    Please help!

    Allright, since nobody out there seems to have the answer - I'm going to share what I discovered so that the next person will actually get an answer without having to spend hours and hours finding it in other forums. Here goes:
    Problem: Audio plays in sync on the timeline, an export from the timeline through Share to bluRay results in correctly synced audio; but a Quicktime Export with current settings results in a final movie where audio is out of sync with the video.
    Solutions: I found two solutions to this problem:
    1- When exporting to Quicktime Movie, check "recompress all frames". This solution had mixed reviews, with lots of people saying you should never do this, as it will reduce the quality of your final output; while others said the reduction in quality was not noticeable to the naked eye. I guess you can try it and be the judge.
    2- In your sequence settings, change the compression setting to Apple Pro Res. This is the setting I decided to go with, as I'm currently awaiting the 10 hour render.
    I did do a quick and dirty test on the ProRes option, where it appeared to work. Since the audio is correctly synced in the beginning of the video and then slowly falls out of sync (obviously the 30p to 29.97 problem), I had to run a test using my entire sequence. If you run a test on a 2 minute sequence, it will appear to be correct, because it is a slow falling out of sync issue - the problems occur later in your project (just fyi). Here is what I did (in case you want to try it on your project):
    I created a new sequence and then changed the compression setting from HDV1080-30p to Apple Pro Res 422. I dragged my sequences into this sequence (so they were nested). I unlinked the audio and then selected about a 20 second area from about 3/4 of the way through the project. I sliced this section and then removed all the video before and after (so it would speed up render time and only render black, but I would still be able to see if the audio synced up later - I hope that makes sense - this made my export time only 12 minutes). After it exported, I reimported the movie, found the little 20 second area, and it was correctly synced. So, now I am exporting the whole thing. I sincerely hope this works. I don't have lots of 10 hour blocks just lyin' around!
    Since my audio issue was most likely due to the fact that I captured and edited in 1080 30p, I believe it must be a bug in FCP that exports the Quicktime movie in 29.97 regardless of whatever your sequence settings are (believe me, I tried to change it to 1080-30p and it didn't work). That is why I think the Apple Pro Res option works, but it involves a total re-render of your project. This is also why I believe it plays fine in the timeline, because my timeline was set to 30p. Again, I also believe that is why my export to BluRay through Share resulted in correctly synced audio - the bluRay export I believe uses the Pro Res codec (which, by the way, took 19 hours).
    Wish Apple would fix this bug.

  • Quicktime Export taking a long time

    I rendered a project. Took 4 hours. Quicktime Export took the same after the render. Did NOT export self-contained. Usually a Quicktime Export is a matter of minutes, not hours.

    I've had a similar problem before. (after render) I ask it to export as a reference movie, but it still takes forever. However, when I check the supposed reference file, it turns out that it's self contained (you can tell by the size). So, check the file that was exported...if it's huge then that's a good indicator that FCP didn't recognize the referenced video command. Maybe it's time to trash preferences or some other kind of troubleshooting? Then again, this problem has been random for me, happening on some projects but not others. --David

  • Adobe Premiere exports white as grey

    I have been searching the web for my problem, but I think I am on the wrong path:
    After rendering a 3D-Animation in single PNGs, I imported these to Premiere, added them to a sequence and exported it. The problem I am getting with all codecs and all container-formats (except QuickTime!): white is rendered grey

    Here is what I tried (and what did not work):
    - applying ProcAmp Effect: no difference
    - rendering preview (preview in premiere looks good) and using preview files for export: white still grey
    - exporting in different container formats and codecs: no results for all windows container file formats: avi, mpeg, H.264 etc.
    - only time it works: exporting to quick time container file (works with all codecs!) - so I have the feeling it is not a codec-issue
    - using all combination of settings: Maximum Render Quality and Render at Maximum Depth, using PAL or NTSC etc.
    So, at least there is a way to export it correctly using Quicktime as the file format. But I need to put this animation in a power point presentation for a presentation, and unfortunateley QuickTime is the only format not supported by PP..
    Thank you for any suggestions or hints..

    I would suggest a few things, more or less in this order: 
    - Delete your preferences (quit, hold alt and launch Pr), try again.
    - Start a new project with different but similar footage, and export again.  Any change?
    - Uninstall and reinstall Pr.
    - If all this fails, you might need to reinstall your OS, as some of the core video functions may be damaged.
    I don't share your feeling about ruling out a codec.  CoDec is short for Compression/Decompression.  You may be compressing fine, but having issues with decompression, or vice-versa.
    Don't know if this will help, but there are options in Quicktime and the WMV component for Mac (which I use) that holds settings for gamma filters, etc.  And I wonder if there isn't something similar in the Windows side that you may have inadvertently set, or gotten broken because of a file corruption, preference, etc.
    Sounds maddening, though.  Hope you get it fixed.

    as there was no result on my prev post, here again:
    i use keynote'08 4.02 on imac with 2gb and osx 10.5.2.
    i created a presentation with 15 slides and over all 16,5 minutes.
    each slide has a mp3 sound file attached (the speakers voice recorded externally).
    now i am facing following problems on *export to flash* (export is around 18mb):
    1) synchronization of voice and effects is different than inside keynote - i fixed this by changing times and export/test cycles, as long until i run sync in swf (please make it sync - this is terrible).
    2) starting with slide 13 some objects do not appear - in further slides many objects do not appear. the sound and time is ok, but not much to see. if i split the presentation into 2 parts, the export works fine, all objects appear in all slides, but i found no way to combine those 2 swf files....
    3) in one slide i found out that the order of appearing/disappearing objects confuses the swf export, so that many objects afterwards are not at all shown.... i played around long and splitted the slide in 2 slides and with some workarounds i got it show all objects.
    4) it would be great if at least some transitions and most effects would be supported and times of effects would be the same inside keynote and in exported swf.
    *exporting to quicktime*:
    1) first i had one large mp3 for the whole presentation and added it as soundtrack and synced it inside keynote. exporting this to quicktime made it run async. but at least export was possible for the full presentation.
    2) i splitted the mp3 for each slide and added each mp3 to each corresponding slide. this way i made it possible to export to swf (see above). but quicktime export now has no sound and slide shows up nearly endless.... qt export is impossible.
    what can i do?
    at least it would help me if i can export ONE swf file.
    best would be if it has same sync inside keynote and in swf - but i can live for now with swf export optimized sync that doesnt work inside keynote. but it should be fixed at least in the future....

    I'm currently having a similar problem, where the Flash exported by Keynote seems to randomly miss some objects on the page that appear after a click or a delay. In fact, in one case, I had embedded a EPS file in the slide, and some parts of the embedded file were exported to Flash but not others. I'm using Keynote 3.0.2, so I'm sorry to hear that Keynote '08 still has this bug which makes Flash export pretty awful to deal with.

    What is the best way to adjust audio on Final Cut Pro, Quicktime self-contained export? Please note all render files and orginals master clip are gone. So adjustments will need somehow be made to the exported Quicktime file.

    On open, on a long document in InDesign CS6 (8.0) I'm getting:

    Your file won't open, right?
    Legacy files are known to have problems from time to time, and the most reliable way I know to avoid those problems is to export .inx, when possible, from the original version. The second most reliable is to export .idml from the original version.
    There are some scripts that will do a batch conversion to .inx or .idml to help you, if you have a lot of files, and if you think you don't have to thoroughly check every legacy file you open in a new version you are sadly mistaken. If you open a .indd file directly, as soon as you start to edit any text it will reflow to confrom to the new text engine and you may not see the problems on the page where you are working. .inx/.idml forces the entire document to recompose as soon as it opens.

  • Grey frame around relinked images

    Sometimes (but I think not always) when I relink a placed image I get a double grey frame around the image.
    This is not a major problem but just kind of irritating and it seems to go away on its own after a few mouse clicks or something, but is it normal behaviour and can it be avoided?
    Here's a shot to show what I'm on about. (In this example the image is masked as indicated by the extra white space at the top.)

    I'm on CS3.
    I didn't ask for isolation mode, so why am I getting it? (If that is indeed what it is.)
    Also the layer palette opens so I can suddenly see all the sub layers. I didn't ask for that either. This only seems to happen randomly when I relink an existing placed image.
    I read (again) what it says in the Help file about isolation mode but there doesn't appear to be any locking or dimming of other objects, so maybe that's not what it is. I have never wittingly used isolation mode in several decades of Illie usage; never really saw the point of it although I had read about it and even experimented with it. Instead I use Select Inverse (with a keystroke) and Lock or Hide if I need to isolate a bit of the artwork to work on. It seems a more reliable way of working and no nasty surprises :-)

  • Random red frames appearing in CS3

    I've been using PP CS3 for a few weeks now and I have encountered a strange problem that I didn't see in PP2: random red frames appearing in the project.
    Sometimes the red frames are visible when reviewing the project on the timeline (before rendering), and sometimes they show up only after exporting the project to AVI or to flash via Adobe Media Encoder. I'm using MPEG files from Sony hard-drive cameras.
    At first I thought it was an issue with my new laptop, but the problem is also occurring on my desktop computer. Both computers have duo-core 2.2 ghz processors and 512mb dedicated memory video cards and 2 mb of system memory.
    I am quite disheartened because I feel I wasted nearly $300 on an upgrade to CS3. I have Googled this problem extensively and haven't found a viable solution. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Not counting HD material, my general understanding is that Premiere is designed to work with SD material where each video frame is complete, not the type of file where 1 frame is complete, and several following frames are simply code which describe changes from the preceeding frame (ie-DV AVI Type 2 files... and not the Type 1 files produced by Windows Movie Maker, and certainly not the AVI files using the divX codec)

    Whatever Premiere does with MPG on the timeline is simply an afterthought... not a design feature (again, this is MY understanding, from reading this forum, and is not based on any inside knowledge of Adobe programming)
    If you simply must edit MPG files, you might look at different products
    Edit MPEG with
    Premiere Elements
    or
    WOMBLE
    or direct from DVD with
    Movie Edit Pro
    Otherwise, do as suggested and convert the files to DV-AVI Type 2

  • Quicktime export inconsistency

    I have built a slideshow and have been trying to export to quicktime. The build choked on one slide that does not have any characteristics that are different than any of the other slides. I removed the slide, and the build went fine. I have since tried to rebuild the slide and export it by itself, and it just won't go. Gets to the last frame and gives me the "export failed, you are either out of disk space or there was an error" message. ANY ideas on what would make a quicktime export NOT work? Entire slide is just images and text transitions.

    The only way I was able to resolve the issue was to remove the audio file that was part of the slide, export as quicktime, then add the audio in final cut after.

  • Random Green Frames When I Import Video?

    I Have Final Cut Pro X and I make videos on youtube as it is my job. I got gaming footage recorded via Eye Tv and Exported it normally as a H.264 and it was 720p HD and a .MP4 File. When I import it onto Final Cut Pro X I See Random Green Frames Just pop out of no where "In The Video" and I have no way of taking it out. Please help ASAP as it is VERY Frustrating .
