Quicktime - External Monitor

Hi,
I am wondering if I can play quicktime movies out through firewire to a DV camera, which is then connected to a TV. So I can have multiple movie windows open on my MacBook, I press play on one and it goes fullscreen on the TV.
This can be done in Final Cut, would just be easier if it was possible in Quicktime.
Thanks!

No, but you can always output TV from a suitable video card or adapter and just connect to the TV directly. I have a DVI to S-Video adapter from Apple, I think it came with it or I bought it for like $30.

  • Possible to view quicktime in full screen on external monitor?

    Hey All!
Im wondering if there is any way to view quicktime movies in full screen (or use front row for that matter) on an external desktop set up us as an extended desktop (as opposed to mirror). This seems like quite a dumb thing to not be able to do.

This is a problem for most software on the mac, especially games. My experience has been most software uses the primary - in this case the macbook lcd - as its display monitor. There are a few ways to fudge it to force it on another screen, but quite frankly I find that the only way to use a macbook pro and external monitor is with the lid closed.
This is generally the best solution as the menu bar is always stuck on the primary anyway.
To use the macbook closed simply wake the computer from sleep with an external keyboard or mouse the laptop and the primary will now be the external monitor.
The only real downside is how do I now use the isight????

  • QuickTime and iTunes video playing fullscreen on external monitor automatic

Hello, on my Toshiba laptop with nVidia video card, I have an external monitor hooked up to the laptop. Every time I go to play video from QuickTime or iTunes, it plays the video at full screen size on the external monitor while also playing in the normal small window of QuickTime or iTunes on the main (laptop) LCD. I don't have the QuickTime Pro key installed on this machine, nor have I somehow selected to play videos at full screen. It does this whether I want to do it or not, which is quite annoying as the full screen version is usually flickering to boot.
Help please. I've looked in the QuickTime Control Panel and don't see anything that would cause this problem, nor in iTunes.
    Cheers, Andrew.

A couple of things you might want to try. Open the QT Player settings, not to be confused with the QT Control panel. There should be settings in there for monitors and dual monitors I believe.
For the flickering, open the Display control panel>Settings>Advanced>Monitor. Listed under Monitor settings-Screen refresh rate: try changing the setting to 85 Hertz.

  • Can't use external monitor as default monitor for full-screen settings

    Hey guys,
I have been trying to get quicktime to let me use my external monitor as the full-screen monitor. Every time I go into full-screen, it reverts back to my MBP screen.
I cannot seem to find this option even in the fullscreen preferences. Rather than having an option I can click on (like I've seen in pictures), it just says "Movie Size." I have Quicktime Pro 7.5.5 and I am running Leopard.
Any ideas? I can play most of my movies on VLC, but since I paid for Pro it would be nice if I can get it to work on my external monitor.

I have to say, I am in exactly the same place ppshr150 is. I have checked both Quicktime and Quicktime Player preferences and the option to choose a default screen for full-screen presentation of movies does not exist.
I can drag movies over to the second monitor and then press Command F and they will play there but from a presentation perspective, this is rather unprofessional.
It surprises me that Apple does not have this option. Or is it a bug they haven't/won't fix?

  • How can I view my timeline on an external monitor?

I have a brand new mac pro tower hooked up via DVI to HMDI cable to my HD tv in my living room and I play quicktime movies and things all the time to that TV from my computer no problem.
Does any one know how to view your Final Cut timeline on an external monitor?
It's such a pain but what I've been doing lately is just exporting a final cut quicktime and playing it via Quicktime for clients to see but I'd rather not do that and just play off the timeline.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Umm, frankly, you missed a lot in the manual then.
You are on the right track but the flaw in your thinking is using DVI from your video card to your tv. From Final Cut Pro, all you're getting is an extension of your desktop, that's it.
To do what you want, you need a dedicated video input/output card from Aja or Blackmagic Designs. You may want to look at the [Intensity Pro|http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity> for a very low cost monitoring solution if all you're looking at is monitoring through hdmi.

  • Audio drops out when following video to external monitor

When I play a sequence to an external monitor, the audio drops out for 2 to 3 seconds after changes on the video track, and then pops back in with no interuption in video output. It doesn't happen at every cut, but it's consistent in the places it does. I thought it might be caused by the size the project has become. So I exported the sequence as a quicktime file, closed the lage project, opened a new one and exported the new file and played it and it happened again, even though there were no edits. It doesn't occur at all when I turn off external video, and play it on the computer. I connected a new firewire from the computer to my DV deck, restarted the computer, but it keeps happening.
Is it that the dramatic change in color, light and compostion crowding out the audios ability to follow the video through the wire?
I'm completely stumped. The next step will be to open the computer and try to blow any excess dust out. I do this periodically anyway, and my last time was two months ago, so I'd be surprised if it works.
Maybe the G4 with 2G processing power can no longer handle the program, but it shows no sign of stuggle in any other way.
My clients are starting to grow restless.

Thank you so much X & Paul, for your suggestions. Although they didn't solve the problem, they kept me hopeful enough to continue my quest for an answer. After exhausting all effort to find the problem in the audio, I decided to focus on the video. So, I tried correcting the excess luma on the consolidated QT movie, and suddenly the problem was fixed. Because of the different levels of correction I'd need for each and every cut in the original sequence, and the precious time it would take, I'd planned to save it for the color correction stage, a mere 2 weeks away. I remembered how illegal white would often cause the image on some monitors, specifically consumer TVs, to waver for a second. But this was happening all the way back to the DV deck's audio meter, so I never expected it to be a luma issue.
I assume that the outdating capacity of my G4 played a part, but I wanted to write back with my thanks, and to impart my illuminated wisdom to the next perplexed soul.
    Thanks again,

  • On external monitor: GOOD.    after render & dvd: BAAAAD.   help, please!

Hi, I edited a 60i NTSC video from a canon XL2, and it looks fine on the external monitor (TV), the FCP preview and everything. It even looks good when I export a QT mov with no compression.
But as soon as I burn it on iDVD and play it on a DVD player, the whole interlacing business goes terribly, terribly wrong.
I've tried all possible exporting settings, but it doesn't work. Should I de-interlace the clips? I've gathered from reading the forums that it might help, but it sounds like a desperate solution, since the text should be interlaced but not the video?
I mean... what did I do wrong? Isn't ot supposed to just work straight-through with the NTSC DV Easy Setup and changing only to "None" on the compressing settings at export?
    Any help, please? Anybody?

    oh, OK.
For exporting, I used the Export>Quicktime movie, just like you said, using the current setting (i.e. Compression:None)
The DVD player was connected to a PAL TV, but it's OK because the DVD player can read anything. I know because I've watched NTSC as well as PAL dvd movies before.
The Canon XL2 the Mac is connected to, via Firewire, is NTSC, connected via RCA to the PAL TV. Which means the signal I'm watching is Black & White... (I know this sounds WEIRD)... but it's O.K. because what I'm really checking as I edit is the interlacing problem that I got when playing the DVD on the dvd player.... : the BAD problem.
How bad? Really bad. Any sudden movement, or panning of objects with vertical lines, like a painting or a building looks all wobbly and curvey and blurry and wrong, which is unnacceptable for the project I'm doing, as it is a professional work (Meaning that I'm charging money for it, despite the crazy assemble of different products and formats I'm using).
I've gotten things that look good before, but never on Final Cut Pro.. I'm new to the program, and to Mac, and this is the first video I'm exporting to a DVD on this platform.

  • Bug - Layers on external monitor

I keep my layers usually on my external monitor, and my main photoshop window on my laptop monitor. I've recently been having an issue where my mouse seems to lag only in the layers window on my external monitor. It kind of jumps around and makes it hard to select layers.
Does any have this problem or a solution to this problem?
    Thanks!

  • Blackout on external monitor in dissolve

    Hi,
I'm running a cross dissolve on FCP 5.0.4. The footage is well in the middle of the take (a good 30 seconds either side for both clips). On the computer screen it's fine. On the external monitor there is a black flash (maybe a frame's worth) in and out of the effect.
I'll try to answer in advance: I've tried any number of render settings - no avail. Sequence is DV PAL 5:4, PAL CCIR 601 (720x576) anamorphic. Lower field is dominant. Quicktime compressor is DV-PAL.
Basically it's the preset. I've used it countless times and I've only had a problem now.
    Any ideas?
I'm open to suggestions that I've switched something off in a drunken haze.
    Cheers,
    d

Might be this and might be not:
If you drag clips around which have dissolves on a a cut, you sometimes drag wrong.
Hard to explain. What I want to say is this: If you remove the dissolve, then are the two clips together or is there (a one frame) gap between them?
Another thing: If this only happens on your external monitor, it could be a field thing, since you don't see it in your computerwindow.
What exactly happens, and what didi you try to resolve it. Did you trash renders? Did you trash preferences. Did you try to insert the clips again, to make sure no keyframe or filter or motiontab-control is causing this. Did you try to slip the edit and does the problem saty or is it gone? And does it roll with the dissolve, or does it stay at the same spot. Etc.

  • Macbook pro does not support Final Cut Pro preview on external monitor?

I have been editing on Final Cut Pro from my imac for approx 1 year with an external monitor attached with no problems. I recently bought a macbook pro, for Final Cut Pro editing, and discovered that the monitor does not work. The Final Cut Pro preview on the external monitor freezes and in the preview pane of FCP it flick between two images.
I have been reading around some forums, and have seen a couple of people with the same problem.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to run the external monitor with FCP?
    Thanks!

You have probably already done it but ensure you have updated the OS and Quicktime prior to attempting to instal Final Cut Studio.
I recently had a hard drive crash and after installing the new hard drive it would not read the OS installation disc. I ended up using an external drive case and installed the OS on the drive from a different Mac Book, then reinstalled the hard drive in the other Mac Book. Then it booted right up. I updated all the original software before attempting to install any additional software.
Everyone kept saying it wouldn't install due a possibly defective optical drive and I can't say why but it wasn't the drive. As soon as I had the system up and running again the optical drive functioned flawlessly.
    I hope this helps you.

  • Playback on an external monitor

    Hi all,
Trying to help a friend out he has final Cut Express HD and wants to view his work on an external monitor but I cant get it to work.
    Setup:
    Mac mini
FCEHD firewire to sony DCR-TRV353E, rca to Tv.
I have the camera in vcr mode, have gone to View>Video Out>Apple FireWire PAL. Easy setup is set to dv-pal.
Have restarted fcp and refresh A/V Devices, tried the QuickTime solution (re-install).
The one thing I did not try was to trash preferences, will try when I go back tonight.
Also when going through all the posts, I see mentioned View>External Video>All frames. I'm use to working with FCP 5 and I know you have this option in that version but don't remember seeing it when I was looking at fcehd last night. Does this option exists for express?
    Any help would be fantastic.

Play your sequence and see if it appears in the
camera's viewscreen. I've heard that some PAL cameras
do not support FireWire pass through, because of some
silly VAT regulation or other. Make sure your camera
supports both DV in as well as out. I can't find any
information on the web for a camera with that model
    number.
Can't see the vision in the viewfinder, the video camera does have I/O Firewire, and support pass through. I also had my camera there and it didn't work either, needless to say I know mine does work!
Thanks for you help so far.

  • Slow Video playback on external monitor

I'm having a problem with video on an external monitor drifting out of sync. The video plays back slow on the monitor but the sound come through fine and the video is playing at a normal speed in FCP. This is only happening with video from FCP, I can play a clip in Color and there's no drift. I've opened the project on another mac and there's no problem. Also, if I set the external video play back to 10 bit the drift is worse than if it is set to 8 bit, as in a 15 sec clip takes 19 secs to play back on the external monitor at 10 bit and 18 secs in 8 bit (not exact times). I've reinstalled AJA LHe control panel and drivers, but seeing as this isn't happening in Color it seems like it must be a FCP issue. I've trashed the FCP prefs (along with AJA and quicktime), what could this be?!?

what video capture card are you using??
have you set render all to FULL, and have you rendered??

  • Fullscreen video playback on external monitor (overlay problem?)

I want to watch videopodcasts via iTunes fullscreen on my external Monitor/TV. It works fine with Quicktime and WindowsMediaPlayer but iTunes doesn't play my Videos in Fullscreen on my external Monitor.
I had the idea it is because the overlay mode isn't siwtched on but I can't find where to setup the display mode of video playback in iTunes.
    Can anybody help me?
    Bernd.
    PC   Windows XP

    oh, no...
i thouhght the iTunes Videoplayback would rely on Quicktime and thus it would be possible.
    isn't there any other possibilty?

  • Mercury Transmit breaks greater than 1920x1080 external monitoring

    Hi all,
In Adobe CC in Quicktime Preview, there is an option to "Scale and Letterbox Output to Fit Video Monitor" in the Video Preview preferences.  This enables the ability to monitor 2K and 4K footage on hardware (in my case the Blackmagic Mini Monitor) that only supports up to 1920x1080 playback.
In CC 2014, this functionality does not seem to be present, in the same way the Premiere has not and does not support this function.
Anyone have any ideas?  Anyone from Adobe want to chime in?
    Thanks!

    Hi Tim,
    Thanks for the response.
"it doesn't have context in how Mercury Transmit works"
Are there plans to include this functionality?
"You can preview your 2K or 4K comp by nesting it into a 1920x1080 comp and scaling it down to fit, and using that comp for video previews."
Thanks for the suggestion, although I wouldn't really consider this a usable workaround.  You lose realtime feedback, which is the primarily the reason I need to use an external monitor in the first place.
I'm curious, what exactly is being gained by using Mercury Transmit?
    Thanks!
