Quicktime File Association problems

I have two machines, a Intel G5 running OS10.5.8 (Quicktime 7.6.2) and a G4 tower running OS9.2.2 (Quicktime 5). Whenever I create Quicktime videos (.mov) and transfer them via USB they are unrecognized by the higher OS and Quicktime. The only way to access them is to bring up the G4 in target mode on the G5 and use them from that hard drive. Copying them to the G5 and ejecting the G4 HD results in the Quicktime files not being recognized.

*Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind*
1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
7) Close the get info window.

  • QuickTime file associations, TIFF in particular

I have a user who needs to open TIFF's in a certain program but QT keeps hijacking the file association in IE6 on Windows XP sp2. When he opens a TIFF file via IE6 or MS Word (impeded in IE6) it opens in QuickTime which can only view the 1st page of a TIFF (seriously apple?). This used to be a common problem and since no one could make QuickTime cooperate we would simply install eiStream Imaging for Windows (now Global360) and it would erase the file associations for TIFF in IE and instead present an option to save or open.
That's all changed now. I can install this other program it will take back the file associations that QuckTime keeps swiping, but immediately after the user reboots QuickTime has stolen them again.
The next step when the user is available will be going in to the registry and cleaning out HKEYCLASSESROOT\QuickTime\ but I have a feeling QT will rebuild at the next startup as this has been the trend.
I have disabled TIFF in the QT preferences yet the association remains, I have changed the file associations via Folder options>File Types yet the associations remain. I reinstall QT, now it won't leave the system tray, AND the file associations remain despite settings in QT pref. I remove QT startup with windows from the registry yet the instant a user opens QT it hijacks that back and is sitting in the SysTray after the next reboot.

Try asking in the QT for Windows area vs. here as a start. Though IIRC QT for Windows has the ability to set or unselect the associations in the preferences.

  • File Association Problems with PDF

I have installed the trial version of Acrobat, and have been using a free reader called FoxIt. My problem is that adobe keeps stealing the file associations from FoxIt. If I set FoxIt to be the default for PDF files, after reboot, or any other adobe product is opened, it sets adobe to be the default for these file types. I really don't want it doing that, any idea where I can dissable this "Feature"?
    Thanks

Probably nothing has changed with your server or your network. Typically, folks realize, "Hey! I can connect via SMB and that's my workaround for the 31 character file name limit!" Or possibly, your Mac folks are browsing the network for your server and selecting it through your Windows domain rather than a Mac zone. Tiger changed the appearance of Windows "WORKGROUPS" so that they now appear as upper/lower case instead of all caps. This use to be a good way to distinguish them from zones.
To guarantee your users are connecting via AFP, which is what I would recommend for a Mac workgroup, have them specifically use "afp://servername" in the "Connect to Servers" dialog. I don't recommend Apple's SMB because Mac OS X splits each file into separate resource and data fork files before placing them on the server. When Windows folks see this, it's a mess. And I don't recommend continuing to use Microsoft's SFM because its version of the AFP protocol hasn't been updated in years. Either way, look to a third party software solution.
Don't let the 65+ GB scare you. It's really not that bad if you're on a 100MB network but the server should recognize that all traffic is local and actually handle all the file moves itself without shuffling files across the network. A bit of a pain, but shouldn't take too long.
    Good luck! bill

  • Quicktime file associations

When I click on an mp3 or video file in internet explorer, the file is opened in Quicktime and it takes a while to load. How can I change the association in IE to open Windows Media Player instead? The standard file associations in Windows, Windows Media Player, and Quicktime are all set correctly but I think IE has its own set of associations.

  • File-roller file association problem

    Hi,
I have a problem with file-roller file associations.
When I double-click on a file in file-roller it always asks which application to use.
For instance, If I double-click on a txt file from thunar it opens gvim automatically. But if I try from file-roller, from an archive, it asks which application to open with.
Same thing for pictures. Thunar starts mirage automatically but file-roller asks which application to start.
It seems that file-roller does not read .local/share/applications/defaults.list nor .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list. I tried to modify both but nothing changes.
I am not running gnome but openbox.
I also tried from cli gnome-open foo.txt and, like should be, it starts gvim.
Installing gnome-mime-data didn't solved the problem. Maybe I am missing something?
Still searching on google for a solution. If somebody had similar problem and knows how to solve please let me know.
Thank you very much and as always sorry for my bad English.

    Hi,
The link is working... it's not a nautilus quirk. Try these examples:
    FIRST EXAMPLE:
Login as root and edit mimeinfo.cache (In openSUSE, the linux distribution I'm using right now, this file is placed on /usr/share/applications).
    su
    gedit /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
    Search for audio/mpeg=
The first application I specify is going to be the program that File-Roller will use to open a compressed mp3 file.
    Example:
    audio/mpeg=totem.desktop;banshee-1.desktop;
    This will open Totem...
    audio/mpeg=banshee-1.desktop;totem.desktop;
    This will open Banshee.
    SECOND EXAMPLE:
    $ su
    $ gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
    Search for:
    text/xml=MozillaFirefox.desktop
    Replace to:
    text/xml=gedit.desktop
This will open xml files with Gedit, instead of Firefox.
    Good luck.

  • Photoshop file association problem

    Hi,
This is probably not the right place as this is most likely not a Photoshop issue, but I'm all out of luck trying to find a solution. I am having issues with file association and was wondering if anyone had a similar problem and may be able to help. I recently installed Adobe Design Premium CS5 only a couple of days ago, upgrading from CS4 and I'm finding that Photoshop is not associated with image files such as .PNG and .JPG and yet Fireworks and even Dreamweaver are.( By the way I'm currently running on Windows 7)
Now when I go to "Open with" on an image, Photoshop is not in the list, so I select browse, I then find the Photoshop EXE and click ok, then it brings open the list of programs to open with again, but after all that Photoshop is not there. I've tried both 32 bit and 64 bit applications of Photoshop, both shortcuts to the EXE and the EXE itself, but nothing seems to work. Other programs within the adobe package selects fine and loads the EXE in the list, it only seems to be Photoshop bugging out.
So has anyone had a similar problem that could please help me out?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

Before you resort to a fresh install of Windows and all that involves I would do the following.
Uninstall all Adobe programs from the Control panel applet.
Run the Adobe Clean Script to the deepest level.
    Clean the registry with CCleaner.
    Re-install CS5.
    (I don't think I forgot anything!)

  • How to kill QuickTime file associations?

Quicktime has hijacked all my media file associations. The files will still open in whatever program I choose (right click > Open with). But no matter what I do I cannot remove that stupid QuickTime logo icon. I read there is a fix by deleting registry keys.
*Disable file association for QuickTime files*
*Disable the file association for QuickTime file types. This can be accomplished by deleting the following registry keys:*
    *HKEYCLASSESROOTQuickTime.**
*This will remove the association for approximately 32 file types that are configured to open with QuickTime Player.*
However, when I search my registery for anything listed HKEYCLASSESROOT/Quicktime. - there are literally hundreds. I am afraid to delete all that and screw up my computer.
    Any help?

  • CS4 .indd file association problem

    Hi folks,
I'm running a PC with XP and recently upgraded my software from CS3 to CS4. My computer has stopped associating .indd files with InDesign. I've tried to set the file association manually using the Open With command though InDesign doesn't appear as an available program. When i browse for InDesign and try to set it as the default program it still ignores it. The only way to get a file to open is to go into InDesign first and then do File->Open.
    Any tips would be appreciated,
    Cheers

This is a long way away from the original post date, but maybe someone else will have the same issues...
    (taken from another post)
    So I went into the Registry, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command, and changed the (Default) from "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" (so changed CS5 to CS6) - and now I see 'Adobe Photoshop CS6' in my 'Open with' list when right-clicking an image...
Follow the same steps to re-associate files from other Adobe programs.
The issue is when you install, let's say CS5 and CS6 at the same time, then remove the first install, your associations are uninstalled also.

  • File association problems with Win2K server

    Hi,
I have a client - 5 Macs in a Win2K network. They're designers and store/work on all their jobs on a Win2K volume. About 2 months ago, problems started happening - files lost their application association (mostly all were turned into Unix exec files), causing sever problems with the workflow. Quark can't open a placed image in it's native app for instance, because the association has been lost. The user has to visit each file and re-associate. As you can imagine, this is not an ideal situation to say the least.
Furthermore, when re-associating the files, the option to "Always open with" is greyed out, so a one-time fix isn't possible.
I suspected that it was something to do with the windoze volume. I more or les proved it by copying one of the files to a local machine and then re-associating: all works as it should when the files are local. Copying the files locally is not an option though.
This really is at the limit of my windoze knowledge. Their sysadmin is also not sure what's happening, aside from the fact that there's no windoze app that's accessing the files and writing them back to the disk. The only thing that looks at the files is the daily backup and that's a read and not write operation. We're stumped, but it really needs sorting. I've suggested they move some of the files to another server and see if the same occurs, which may or may not prove the issue is with the server they're using now. Any guidance gratefully received.
All Macs at 10.4.5 and recent updates, all have QXP 6.5, CS2.

  • Quicktime file open problem: preventing a masterpiece debut movie!!!

    Hi all,
I am trying to edit some video footage I shot with a Sony miniDV Camcorder some time back. Part of the reason I bought my first mac (20" iMac duo intel) was to be able to make a short movie from this footage which I could never do on my old, tired rubbish PC. Imagine my disappointment when I tried to open the files with iMovie and they didn't open, just got an error message.
The files are listed as XXXX.mpg and they have size (multiple GB each). Also I downloaded VLC and they play fine in that. But I really want to get them into the Apple movie making software. It appears, if they can't play in Quicktime, they can't be edited in iMovie.
Originally, I used a PC Software package called "Ulead Videostudio 8", to get the files off the camera and into mpg format. Thats the only other background I have....
Can anybody please help! (Its such great footage too, was a charity sponsored classic mini rally around Europe and ending up in Italy, called (surprisingly!) "The Italian Job".
BUT it was in 2004! Help me realise my dream of a fantastic 10minute movie to impress my friends and family!!!
    Thanks, Chris

I originally got the film off the camera via Firewire using VideoStudio 8 (one of the few pieces of affordable software I could find on the PC that would read the Sony's file format). I then saved it into its current form using this software.A bit of information that was too important to leave out. In any case, the DV compression format is more or less the standard for editing at the "frame level" on a computer. Any of the usual Mac editors will capture your DV data from your camera via FireWire from within the application.
This of course, brings up another question. Do you still have the original tape? If so, then the best approach would be to re-import the data directly to editor. This would, of course, reduce the loos of quality associated with your previous conversion to the more "lossy" MPEG format, as well as, any additional loss in having to convert back to a "native editing" format and then on to your delivery/distribution format for the final product.
If you don't have the original tape, then you would have to go the conversion route to do any major amount of precision editing and this brings up a secondary question -- When you say "MPG" here, are you referring to MPG as MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files? Files produced on PC platforms often use MPG as a general extension for any MPEG-1/2 audio and/or video format combination. If the files are MPEG-1 A/V, then the MPEG-2 component is not required for MPEG Streamclip but your quality will have just taken another hit due to the conversion workflow.

  • File association problem

whenever i try to open up any file thats been downloaded from safari like a .doc file or .wmv i cant open it because it says:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
the only way around it is if i physically go to where iv downloaded it and open it. Doesn't happen on any other browser only safari.
does anybody know how to fix it?
    thanks

you can try repairing you "default associations for file types"
I can only tell you about Windows Xp (since I hate using vista):
Co to Control Panel -> Folder Options
Under the tab-File Types find the specific File type you'd like to associate a default program to.
Then click on the button: Change and select your default program that would open the file type in questioned.
(I think that there are programs that do this automatically for all file types (try googling them). Btw, I think that every program verifies its' file types on program start.)
    Hope I've been helpful,
    Take care

  • File association problem with excel

    hi everybody,
i have the following annoying little problem, couldn't find any answers so far in the forum:
i have some downloaded files (just plain text files) that i call ".in", and finder lists those as "microsoft excel binary document". now i want to associate those files to open with textwrangler as standard app. if i get information for those files and set "open with" to textwrangler, as soon as i click "change all" it reverts the application in the "open with" box to "microsoft excel", meaning i can never change the filetype permanently.
anybody know what i might be doing wrong, or what i can do to make the change stick?
    thanks

    Hi Gopal,
There is a a column width optimize function of SLIS ALV layout.
    colwidth_optimize(1) type c
but, i am not sure if it works.
Also, when the report is generated, there is an option in the menu.
Go to "Setting --> Columns --> Optimize Width"
With this, it optimizes the column width based on data width but when you download, it reverts to the dictionary field length.

  • Older content debuggers file association problem...

I require to use the flash player content debugger stand alone to debug an application and examine traces....
The PC I am using (Windows 7 - 64 bit) came bundled with Flash Player 15, but not the content debugger.....
when examining the content debugger download page, I chose to download an older version of flash player content debugger,
but have found you now no longer provide them with installers but just stand alone exe's such as below....
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/updaters/13/flashplayer_13_sa_debug.exe
This meant that when I wanted to try and run a swf, the file type was permanently associated with
this debugger which I downloaded (the old one), I have since installed the latest versions of flash player content debuggers at version 15.
But my swf files are still associated to automatically open with the older version....
Can you please provide me with how to fix this or where the stand alone v15 flash player content debugger would be installed
    on a windows 7 - 64 bit OS?
Also why do you guys now not provide installers for your older players, seems silly to me?
Thanks very much for your time...
    All the best
    Rhys Thomas

If I download the standalone player from https://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html it says version 15, and I get version 15.0.0.189.

  • File association problems

this is on a mac. I went to a class and photoshop was having issues opening its files. All files that shoud open with photoshop cs2 are trying to open with cs3. Cs3 wass installed a year ago so the teacher could give it a try. it was a trial vesion. They uninstalled it. Now when they go to open photoshop files or tif files that are suposed to open with cs2 they get an error. error code 10660 And the psd icons have the cs3 icon on them instead of the cs2 icon. I tried going to get info and setting all psd's to open with cs2. I was able to set one file to open with cs2 but when i clicked apply to all like files, it did not work for all like files to open in cs2.

Then you may not have selected the CS2 version. Did you try double-clicking on one of the documents to see if it opens in the CS2 version? The icon may not change until you reboot the computer. If need be you may want to refresh the launch services database:
    Rebuild LaunchServices Database
    For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Press RETURN.
    For Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
