Quicktime files are suddenly unplayable

I have a dedicated G-Tech drive with a LARGE clients multiple on-going projects on it & suddenly, several folders of video files are unplayable. I've tried restarting, repoairing permissions, using mpeg streamclip & Quicktime to open, copying the folder to another drive, & going on Time Machine to retrieve the files & nothing seems to work. Quicktime tells me "The document (file name) could not be opened, & mpeg streamclip says "unrecognized file type".
These are files generated directly out of my JVC GY HM700. I've just generated similar size files today & they play fine. Any ideas on how to resurrect these unplayable files? They are being used across multiple projects for this client & are pretty much irreplaceable. Arrgh!!

You always need to have a backup strategy to prevent this kind of situation. Did you do any kind of software update recently? That could be the source of the problem. People have reported losing playability of some video files after an update.

All of a sudden this week I am losing my old sessions. As I usually have about 20 tabs open in 4 separate windows, this is VERY annoying. VERY.
Also, quicktime links are no longer working, like at apple.com/trailers. I get an "Error: 47 Invalid Url: ()" message when trying to use them.
My only recent computer changes were updating Flash, and also on June 15th I got a bunch of updates from Windows Updates. Mostly security updates, and a .NET Framework update.
My feeling is this has something to do with the windows updates?
I use Vista Home Premium.

I was able to duplicate this issue on my Windows 7 laptop as follows:
     1) Completely uninstall FlashPlayer (using your tool) as well as Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Maintenance Service (used Windows 7 - uninstall from Control Panel). Please note that I checked the box that said "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" to ensure that Firefox was completely gone from my laptop.
     2) I then went out to the Firefox website and downloaded the "Firefox Setup 13.0.1.exe" app to my laptop. I ran this app to install Firefox.
     3) I then went to the following website http://www.ishmael.org.uk/karaoke02.php as I know that this URL uses Flash Player (obviously you can go to any URL that uses Flash Player - I'm just letting you know which one I used). I then clicked on the icon on this page to install Flash Player.
Once the install was completed, the URL stops responding and appears to be locked up (although it will occassionally hiccup and display portions of the page and then lock up again). You will eventually get a pop-up notice from Firefox that has the header "Warning: Unresponsive script" and says the following:
     A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to to see of the script will complete. Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:6551
Selecting "Stop script" will get Firefox working until you hit another page that uses Flash Player.
To ensure that the above URL is not the culprit, I used one from your website http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html and had the same results.

My files are suddenly going dark after certain operations?

Last week a very strange (and new) thing began to happen. If I have multiple files open in tabbed viewing and I perform certain operations on any one of the open files, all of the open files suddenly darken considerably. It looks as though I had created a new top layer, filled it with black and then adjusted the opacity slider for that layer to around 40 or 45%. As I said, that immediately happens to all open files.
Many different operations have made this occur, but the 2 that will do it every time are either converting to a new color profile for one of the files or dragging one of the files down out of the tabbed linep so that I can grab a layer from that file and copy it to another file. In that case the darkening occurs as soon as I drag the file down from the tabbed lineup -- not when I copy the layer.
Here is where it gets interesting. If I save these new (appearing much too dark) files and close and then reopen Photoshop and then reopen those files which a moment ago had looked much too dark, they look fine. And they continue to look fine until I do something which again causes every open file to appear as if a 45% black layer had been droped on top of it. There has not been a Photoshop session in the past week where I did not do something (though I have not loggged all of the things which will make this happen) to bring about this problem. If all I'm doing is resizing or copying layers, it's not much of an issue because I now know that the files which look way too dark will be fine the next time I restart Photoshop, but it's changed my workflow since I now need to think ahead and try to finish all of my color critical work before doing anything I think MIGHT cause the problem to occur.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?
I'm using Photoshop CS4 Extended on a Dell Workstation running XP Professional (32 bit) and consider myself to be above average -- though by no means an expert -- in terms of Photoshop literacy.

This is a REAL longshot, but it sounds as though maybe an OpenGL shader to do gamma conversion isn't working. I say this because the symptom sounds quite similar to something I saw when I was implementing my own shaders in my software.
Since OpenGL is implemented on your GPU hardware by your video driver, is your video driver up to date from the web site of the maker of the video card?

Files are suddenly locked

This has to be the stupidous question of all time but I need help. In Bridge5 suddenly almost my entire drive has been locked and I do not know how to unlock them. It makes it really hard to write to the files. Thanks for being kind.

I think you are correct on that. I opened some of the folders and they wre
checked read only. I tried to change them to not being read only and it
worked some of the time. The folders sometimes stayed read only and the
files were ok to change. It was pretty arduous as there are about 50
folders . I will probably have to check the folders beforfe I try to
write anything to them. Thanks so much for the help. When people who know
what they are doing help us less fortunate, it is a blessing. Here is one

All of a sudden, some of my Quicktime movies won't play. I get an "upable to covert to quicktime" message window that pops up. Someone mentioned this might have something to do w/the new Maverick system?

Your system profile = MacBook, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4) in the original post. Is this correct? Mavericks starts 10.9.x
If you indeed are Mavericks and QT X, then yes... QT X dropped support for some older codecs. Using QT Player 7 will still play your movies.

In RH7html, files are suddenly read only

We use RH7 html and VSS version control. I have opened an old project and had some issues trying to get it versioning correctly.
when I opened the project just now, all my htm files (topics) are 'read only', so every time I want to change something a message pops up and I have to click OK to make it writable. Not huge, but is there a way I can change all the topics to writable at one time?

It is interesting you should ask the last question below. I checked it, and it has gone back to only 'add to version control' being available where it had all the options available a while ago today.
I haven’t had this problem with my other projects. This is a very old one and is basically really badly set up, so who knows what is going on.
I have added it to version control YET AGAIN. I have a nasty feeling this problem with this project is not going to go away any time soon.

My docx files are suddenly ineditable

I installed Yosemite about a couple of weeks back. No problems. I have been using the 2011 update of Microsoft Word for Mac for three years or so. No problems.
I suddenly cannot edit my docx files, even ones I was working on last night. 'Compatibility Mode' appears on the file name. I am not aware that I changed any setting.

ALSO - if that does not help, locate your DVD install disk for Office 2011 and your product key, with that in hand, remove Office completely using MS instructions.

Re: Trimming quicktime file. Help!

Hi guys, Im doing some editing for a friend whose quicktime files are all 20GB plus, and am low on space on my harddrive, so cant copy them over and put them in final cut. Can anyone enlighten me on trimming quicktime clips and saving that specific trim in order to put on my harddrive, to then put into FC, as to not have to drag the whole clip onto my harddrive.

It might be time to move on to DVDSP 4. I had a lot of trouble with DVDSP 3 and larger more complicated projects. I never got your particular problem but it always invovled the usability of particular projects. And I never really located a source to the problem.
One problem I had in the early days of DVDSP 3 was the quality of RAM (3 seemed particularly sensitive to this).

Do you have access to another computer with Numbers installed?
If so, do your files open properly on that computer?
If so, then the problem is your computer itself, which is best posted in a different forum.

In mountain lion, my avchd folders are QuickTime files. Why and when will Apple fix this?

I recently noticed that in mountain lion, when I insert the such card from my camera, the avchd folders that used to exist in previous operating systems are now QuickTime files. If I wish to see what I could see in previous operating systems by simply selecting the folder, I now have to bring up the context menu and choose to show package contents. This should not be this way and it really gets old fast when you need to go down several levels.
Is Apple aware of this? Did Apple do this ridiculous thing on purpose? Will Apple fix this?

Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences. If it shows that Time Machine is ON, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner, if necessary, to unlock it. Scroll to the bottom of the list of backup drives and click Add or Remove Backup Disk. Remove all the disks, then add them back. Quit System Preferences. Test.

Using Sothink video downloader, normally video files are save in FLV extension. Now for whatever reason suddenly my video files are save in .ebm extension. "Save file Type As" is peg only on .EBM extension

It's a WEBM video file. My solution was to rename the file to have .webm extension, and play it with the latest VLC Player (2.1, but I think any from 1.1 and upper will solve it too). Just associate .ebm with VLC didn't work. I had to rename the files so VLC knew exactly what that thing was.
By the way, it worked the same way with a .eam file (!), I just renamed the extension to .webm.

Basically your player is telling you that you need to install the codecs that will play the compressed data within the AVI file.
AVI is a legacy file container in which the tracks of data are interleaved to maintain synchronization. This data can be encoded using many different audio and video codecs. Your problem is to determine which codecs you need for the player you are trying to use and install them if they are available. Failing that, your will either have to play the files in a different player which has the codec support your require built into the app or convert the content to a compression format that is natively compatible with the player you wish to use.
Since you have not stated what platform, operating system, and particular player you are targeting for playback, it is difficult to provide precise instructions for fixing your specific problem at this point. Suggest you try alternative players compatible with your system and platform to see if they will play the files, use a dedicated media information utility to determine the codecs needed for playback, or post a sample file for analysis.
