Quicktime files returning inconsistent from Compressor

I created a film in FCP 6, 60 minutes long, split into 3 sequences. Each sequence is exported to Quicktime (self contained, uncompressed) then sent to Compressor, ready for DVD Studio Pro. So far so good.
The first disc I burned turned out fine, with legible text, minimal shimmering in jpg images and colour and contrast pretty similar to what I created originally in FCP. The film just needed one of two tweeks to several files, and the process was repeated.
The result was nothing like the first: the disc produced shimmering in still images, all the sequences were too light, colour was washed out, and so on.
How is it that exporting a movie to Quicktime, uncompresed, using the same format each time  can produce wildly different results?
This is so time-wasting because I must repeat all the steps yet again until I (hopefully) achieve a master that is suitable for duplicating. Any suggestions?

I believe I may have found a reasonable solution to this problem after scouring associated forums. It seems my problem is widespread, and it is due to the inability of FCP to resemble anything on a TV screen, to put it simply. It is also to do with codecs, but mostly the different RGB space used by Compressor — and most important of all, the Gamma.
My solution is to fiddle with the Compressor settings after importing a sequence. Key to image control is Filters: click Gamma and reset to 1.22; then adjust Contrast (-10) and Deinterlace (set to Blur); this last one is very good for dealing with those unpleasant shimmering white artefacts from moving stills. Next is Frame Control: set this to ON, set everything to best, anti- alias around 10, Details level to 90.
You will need to try a few variants and play with Contrast and Gamma, but after four wasted DVDs (and as many days) I can now see on TV something closer to what I had in my original FCP file.
Hope this helps.
It is astonishing that I, the customer, have to go through this time-wasting exercise, after paying good money for this software. Apple should be ashamed of itself  for selling something so flawed and leaving it up to us to figure how how to work it. Sorry, need to vent!

  • QuickTime Error: 0 message from Compressor

I recently exported several sequences from FCPro 5.5 to Compressor for conversion to MPEG-2. For some reason, two of the sequences (one is the longest, but only by several seconds; the other is nowhere near the longest) fail in Compressor with the message "QuickTime Error: 0".
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to export those sequences to QuickTime movies then bring those movies into Compressor afterwards...but I'd really like Compressor to work the way it's supposed to. Anyone know what might be going wrong here?
    Thanks.

Okay, I solved the problem. Turned out I had installed Perian (http://perian.org/) a few days back so I could generate FLV movies. (Turned out I didn't need it anyway.) Anyways, it seems to interfere with playback of certain QuickTime movies. I removed Perian, and the problem went away.

  • Quicktime File Was Changed From MPEG-4 to nothing?

    Hey folks,
So I did a couple interviews this past week, and the recording's files seemed to have been somehow modified, and lost the bulk of the recordings.
    Here's the file info now:
So it says the file was modified last night, which doesn't make sense because I wasn't on the computer then. And now the size of the file is tiny compared to what it should be.
Does anyone know if there's a way to revert the file to what it was before? Thanks!

And 12:57 PM is the middle of the day (I.e., 57 minutes after high noon.)

  • Imovie08 doesn't import quicktime file made from imovie05

I can't get imovie 08 to open the quicktime file I made from a movie that was created in imovie 05... any suggestions?

Although 08 should generally be able to handle Quicktime files, Quicktime is a "container" file and it's important to know the codec used in creating the file. When you exported the file from iMovie, what was your process? If you open the file in Quicktime, does it play correctly? In QT Player, what does it say for the video format (look in Movie Properties).

  • Importing Quicktime Files to Edit in Final Cut Express

I just bought final cut express to edit quicktime files I receive from work. FCE will not let me import certain files and I get a message saying "Error: File Type Unknown", but what's weird is I CAN import some files that are the EXACT same file type!
I have noticed that one difference in these files is that the icons in Finder are different. The file I CAN import is usually the default quicktime movie icon, while the ones I CANNOT import usually have a video thumbnail for the icon. Does this mean anything?
The files are the same. Same codec, same frame rate, same dimensions, everything but the video length & icon view finder are the same.
Please someone assist me with this or I will have to return FCE and start saving up for FCP I suppose.

I couldn't do this action, I don't have Quicktime Pro. Should I invest in this? What does it mean if the Audio and Video aren't the same settings? Can I change them with Quicktime pro? Thanks!

  • How do I export from FCP to a QuickTime file with multiple audio channels?

I'm delivering a project where the first step is to generate an HD Cam SR master, which I will be doing at a post-production lab. They will then do a QC check for me. To generate this HD Cam SR master, they need to me to bring in my 98-minute long movie on a firewire hard drive, in five equal parts -- QuickTime files. From these five QT files, the lab will then be creating an HD Cam SR master that will have...
dialogue on tracks 1 and 2
effects on tracks 3 and 4
music on tracks 5 and 6
    MY QUESTION
    a) I don't see any way to separate these audio tracks accordingly in the FCP menu for QuickTime export. Does anyone have any experience doing this?
    b) And does anyone know the most efficient way to combine timeline audio tracks for this purpose? I have my dialogue sitting on the first FOUR audio tracks, actually. To deliver this film, I'll need to crush these four audio tracks to two, as listed above. I could generate an AIFF file, I suppose, import it back onto the timeline, sync it up, and then re-export along with the visuals to make the final QT file, but this seems like a generation loss.
    thanks,
    Shanked
PS the movie is made up of footage from a Sony PMW EX1. I used the codec "XDCAM 1080 24p 35mbs VBR" for editing in FCP. I'll either export to QT using this same codec or switch to "Apple ProRes" if my machine can somehow maintain the sync.

The following will answer both your questions a) and b).
Click on your master timeline and press cmd+0 (zero) to bring up Sequence Settings, then click on the Audio Outputs tab on the right. Click on the Outputs option and change it to 6. You can leave them as Stereo pairs.
Now, back on your timeline, you need to make sure all your audio is organised so each track. A1, A2, A3, A4 etc has all the relevant media on it.
Then, on the left of the timeline you see the Destination toggle buttons, then you see the Padlocks to lock tracks, then you have the Toggle Auto Select squares. If you right-click on the Toggle Auto Select squares you bring up a little sub-menu, at the top of this list you'll see Audio Outputs, which will show the stereo channels for that particular track. As you've changed the number of Audio Outputs in the Sequence Settings, the list will show: 1&2, 3&4, 5&6. You just tick whichever channels you want.
In your case, you have dialogue on the first 4 tracks, no problem, just go down through tracks 1,2,3 and 4 as described above and assign these to Audio Outputs 1&2.
Then just go down through your music and effects audio tracks and assign them accordingly.
Now, when you export your timeline as a self-contained media file, it will have different audio channels.
I hope that makes sense. When you change the number of audio outputs as described in the first step, I believe the rest of it is fairly self explanatory, once you know where the settings are.

  • Can a Quicktime file download from clickable link?

Quicktime file download to desktop from clickable link?
I have large movies that I want to make available for direct download to the desktop so people will click download and do something else.
It is my understanding that you can't provide a quicktime file for download to a desktop because there are PC/MAC and browser issues across platform. But maybe I'm wrong.
Is it possible to make a web page that allows users to download higher file size videos from a clickable link? The quicktimes are h.264 in SD + HD around 50-100 megs. The files will be so large people won't want to wait so I want it to go directly to the desktop.
So far I can only find a few similar options
    1) Embed the file in a web page. Provide a download link after the movie loads.
(This option requires you to load the file into the page. Users may not wait and close it)
    2) Provide a zip file. This allows you to create a clickable link to the zip which begins downloading upon clicking. You then unzip the file. (Some less computer savvy people may get confused by the zip)
    3) Put a raw file on server. This will play the movie in a blank window but can also be right clicked for direct download.

    Welcome to the discussions, jessestudio.
I've seen a few sites that have a link to the video with instructions to "Right-click to download". Essentially, it's option three with instructions. It seems to be a fairly common way of handling it. (Even for non-QuickTime movies)

  • Playing videos from a quicktime file VS youtube

    Hi,
I am building an app which needs to be able to play videos. My choices are:
    1. Play directly from Youtube (not sure of the size of file, but is 10min long approx in SD).
    2. Play a quicktime file which is approx 50MB in size from the web
Does anyone have an opinion on the performance of the two methods? Sorry if I haven't provided enough information.
    Many thanks

  • How do I convert a Quicktime file into an MPG2 in Compressor?

Every time I try to export my movie as an MPG2 in FCP, it locks up on me.
So I exported the movie as a regular Quicktime file in FCP and now I'm wondering what all the steps are to make the file into an MPG2 so that I can burn it to a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.

Just open Compressor and import the QT file.
Click on the 'Settings' button and choose a preset that matches your source meda format and gives you the compression parameters you want to use.
Click on the 'Destination' buttons for each and tell it where to send the file.
Change the 'Output file name'(s) if you wish.
    Hit 'Submit'
The Compressor Help menu will give you plenty of info on options available.

  • Problem with picture in burned DVD from Final Cut Express quicktime file

I use Final Cut Express HD to edit. On more than one occasion, I have exported a movie using quicktime conversion and then used iDVD to burn it to a DVD. Every time I do this, the DVD's picture is shaky, especially when there is fast motion. I have tried burning with both the best performance and best quality settings in iDVD and it doesn't make a difference. The same problem occured when I tried to use a friend's computer to do the same thing. We both have the new 20" iMacs. I am not sure if it is Final Cut or iDVD that is the problem, but quicktime files that are not from Final Cut Express are not a problem. I have a feeling it is a setting somewhere that needs to be changed. Thanks!

    Greetings.
I've personally never used iDVD for any sort of DVD authoring, but the symptoms that you're describing are giving me the impression that there may be an issue with the MPEG 2 encode. Again, I don't know iDVD so you might be better off asking this question in the iDVD forum.

  • Quicktime file from Photo Booth not playing.

I recently restored a Photo Booth movie from Time Machine. After attempting to play it it read "The document “Movie on 2010-01-23 at 03.35” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands." I have no idea what this means. The file is reading as a Quicktime file.

  • I cannot import a Quicktime file (.mov) which I generated from a slide show out of iPhoto8 in iMovie8 (filename is grey); what did I wrong?

I cannot import a Quicktime file (.mov) which I generated from a slide show out of iPhoto8 in iMovie8 (filename is grey); what did I wrong?

iMovie 08 will only import files that contain codecs that it can edit. It will generally import audio and video codecs that iPhoto generates. However, if your iPhoto slideshow contains a manual advance track, iMovie cannot edit this and therefore will not import. In iPhoto, check to see if you can do a timed advance rather than a manual advance. Then it should import.

  • What metadata is saved within the Quicktime file from the Browser window?

I'm wondering if anybody could provide a list which contains the metadata that's saved in relation to the available columns in the browser window in Final Cut.
For example, I know if I change a clip's Reel name, that information is saved into the actual Quicktime file so if I bring that file into a new project, FCP's Reel column will automatically display the new Reel name.
On the flipside, information such as "Angle" doesn't seem to be saved. Curious as to what's saved and what isn't.

If you rename the clip in the Browser, that does not affect the captured file. But, if you change the reel name, it is. However, any log notes or things you add in the columns after you capture won't be included in the clip if you import that from the raw file. HOWEVER, it will be attached if you drag the clip from one project to the new one.

  • I can't open Quicktime files from iPhoto

I can't seem to open Quicktime files from iPhoto. I try double-clicking but nothing happens.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.
