QuickTime files sending my movie crazy

Hi all,
I've imported 7 small QuickTime files of about 2MB each to make a short movie but weird things are happening that are preventing me making the movie. In a nutshell, here's a list of the sequence of events that are happening:
1. When I import the clips, I get a warning saying "The clip does not match this sequence's settings...Change sequence settings to match the clip's settings?". I click Yes.
2. When I add Cross Dissolves, I get repeated warnings about dropped frames and the dissolve won't play until it is rendered
3. The RT drop-down menu in the Timeline changes to show only three options (Play Base Layer only; Use Playback Settings; Full Quality). Don't know if this is relevant.
Any ideas of what's going on?
Thank you,
Andrew

OK, I've given MPEG Streamclip a go. I couldn't find a conversion option for ProRes, so selected the first one in the list after going to File > Export as..., which was Export to QuickTime... (there were also options for AVI; MPEG-4, etc). Hope I chose the right one.
Anyway, after converting, the specs still say that the clip is a QuickTime Movie, but it's gone from 2MB to 28MB. Codecs are now Motion JPEG A.
Have I chosen the right conversion option?

  • Open quicktime file to play movie and mac hangs and leaves artifacts (screen smear) on screen mac slows down

I recently completed a clean install of snow leopard and added some RAM to my MAC
when I open a QuickTime file... my MAC slows down, I get the rainbow pin wheel and screens and menus that I try to access start to "smear"... leave behind artifacts
ultimately the movies flutter and don't play properly, and I have to restart my MAC to reset my desktop
I suspect it may be related to my RAM because I've never had this issue previously although it only seems to occur when I use QuickTime
... also I installed "flip for mac"
I purchased the RAM from OWC
    thoughts?

The codec info should have been listed before the comma that precedes 640x360. Seems to be a bug in the recent versions of QT 7. If you have QT Pro you can still find the codec name by opening Movie Properties and checking the video format that way. Anyway, since Perian cant play it I suspect you are out of luck in MacOS x. Not all avi decompressors have been ported to OS X. It may be that the compressor is one of the old Indeo codecs and those definitely will not work in X. They will work in the Classic environment but a lot of you folks have given up on Classic. Just in case here is a link to the Indeo codecs for Classic: Indeo codecs for Classic
Have you tried playing it in VLC. If it is not an Indeo file VLC may play it.
The Mac version of WMP doesn't play avi or mpeg files -- mostly it plays wmv or asf files and not even the most recent versions of those formats.

  • Send and File/Send and Move

There was a post on this about a year ago, but never a resolution. Entourage has a "Send and File" command, but Apple's Mail lacks the equivalent. I do like Mail, but I hate the lack of this feature. I just spent hours on an airplane going through my Sent folder to file old messages. It would be so much easier if Mail had a Send and Move command that would make the message appear in the correct folder and not the Sent folder/mbox.
It would be great if someone from Apple would weigh in on this issue in this forum. Since I doubt that's going to happen, does anyone know of a script that changes Mail to accomplish the same thing? I've searched and searched and can find nothing.
Perhaps someone can motivate some developer to create such a script?

Yes, I'm aware of that. Hence my comment that I didn't expect anyone from Apple to weigh in. And yes, I have also submitted feedback on this issue. My posting here was more to find out if anyone in the user community knew of a Send and File script, utility, hack, or other solution.
Mail rules currently only work on incoming mail. You can write Applescripts to perform operations not performed by those built into the rules editor. However, Mail will not automatically run these scripts for you. If you want these features you will need to switch to Entourage.
Of course, since I switched from Entourage, it's not likely that I would want to switch BACK to Entourage. Never liked the single consolidated database file of Entourage.
You can use Smart Mailboxes to aggregate messages based on certain criteria. Smart Mailboxes do not actually move mail but rather creates a folder that lists only those items that meet your search criteria. The actual items remain where they are normally filed. You can replace your "real" mailboxes you use for filing with Smart Mailboxes if you prefer.
Unfortunately, that really doesn't accomplish what I'm hoping for. Thanks for the suggestions though!

  • Exporting a quicktime file to a .mov format file

I'm having difficulty exporting a quicktime movie file from FCP 4.5 to a .mov file. How long is it supposed to take. The file is only 10 minutes long. It says at 22% done it will take an additional hour... Is this correct? What am I doing wrong? Why is it taking so long?

    It all depends ...
Perhaps we can help you if you give us some information.
    What are your:
    Sequence settings?

    RAM?

  • Final Cut Express HD won't recognize .mov / quicktime files.

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch with FCE3 installed. I'm using OSX 10.6.6. My camera doesn't put video out through a firewire, only usb, meaning FCE can't recognize it (to the best of my knowledge). So, to get around that, I uploaded the video through iLife '11 and converted all my video into one long .mov/quicktime file. When I try to import the video, I get a "file error" message.
Any tips on how I can get the video form iMovie to FCE? If it means not using quicktime, I'm fine with that, too.
    Thanks!

Well, to repsond to Ian, I don't have FCE4. I have FCE3. I'll upgrade eventually, though.
And I have a Cannon FS20. I did what you said in the quicktime player. Here's the format:
    "H.264, 960 x 540, Millions Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 44100 Hz."
The video plays fine in iMovie '11. I even tried the "share with Final Cut" tab in iMovie, but the video still wouldn't work in FCE3.
But I might add that it's not just the video from my camera that doesn't work in FCE3. It's all quicktime video. Even video that worked in FCE3 on my old Powerbook G4 now don't work in the same in FCE3 for my MacBook Pro.

  • Can one DISBALE "Save as Source/Movie" for a Quicktime file on the Web ?

I recently learned how to assign quicktime files to links on the web.
When you select a link, a new window opens up and the sound file begins to play automatically.
I noticed that the listener can save this file to their desktop.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO PROTECT SOUND FILE SO THEY CAN NOT BE SAVED TO A DESKTOP ?
In other words, can one have a quicktime file without the "Save as Source" or "Save as Quicktime Movie" active, but greyed out instead ?

The html tag to do this is:
    object tag
    param name="kisokmode" value ="true"
    The embed tag
    kisokmode="true"
This will remove the disclosure triangle (lower
right) to save and also prevent Control-click
    (right-click on a PC).
A better way is to use existing AppleScripts to make
a copy of your file "Un-Editable" (the name of the
    AppleScript Droplet).
To "test" the exploit try and save or edit one of my
    files:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/64
The page should load with a "poster.mov" file and the
link to the href file isn't invoked until the viewer
    "clicks" on the poster movie.
Once the href linked file opens even owners of QT Pro
are prevented from "saving" the file.
You'll need to save your .mp3 files inside a .mov
"wrapper". They will still work as intended inside
your html code with the .mov file extension.

  • Quicktime won't open Mov files

    Hi there,
I am trying to get files from work onto my home computer.
At work, we use Windows and Edius GrassValley (6?) to edit videos. I can convert the files to a Quicktime before I take them home and I've done this several times before.
But now it won't let me open the files in either Quicktime or iMovie. I'm not certain what I'm doing wrong, I don't believe anything has changed on my computer since the last time I brought home some files.
When I try to open them with Quicktime, it just says it's not a movie file even though the tag says it's a .mov and I converted the file to a quicktime file before putting it on my flash drive.
I'm currently running Mac OS 10.6.8, Quicktime 7.6.6 and iMovie 8.0.6 (I know, it's ancient!).
If any of you lovely people could at least point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    Hello Niebby,
According to the description of the issue provided looks like some change has been done in your system. Most probably a change in the installed codecs. I would suggest you to check whether the required codecs are installed under the folder "/Library/QuickTime".
If reinstallation is needed you can check this post "QucikTime Codecs Installation" to get some details about how to proceed.

  • ITunes won't play .mov QuickTime files anymore

My hard drive crashed two weeks ago and it has been replaced and almost all of the information was salvaged--thank god!
However, now in iTunes when I go to play a movie that previously played in iTunes, it says that the file requires QuickTime and that it is not supported by this version of iTunes.
I have over 9,000 movies in my iTunes MOVIES section that are of various formats (none are flv or avi, as I don't think iTunes has ever played those).  I've never had trouble playing mov, mp4, m4v, mpg files before.  Is this likely a problem with my reinstall of iTunes or is it that the latest version of iTunes has limited parameters than prior versions?
Thanks for any imput.  I'd really like to be able to play all of my movies in iTunes like I could before.
    Chad

I'm sorry that I have no solution to offer, but I also have noticed that several video files with the .mov extension that used to play just fine will no longer play in either the current QuickTime Player or in the older QT Pro Player 7. I have no idea what changed.

  • Quicktime not playing certain .mov files

I have a situation where Quicktime isn't displaying anything on a particular .mov file on the internet. The quicktime control pops up, and starts playing, but there is no image or sound. I'm using a PowerPC mac with Quicktime 7.1.2 and OS 10.4.7 on an eMac. I'm able to view other quicktime files. The same mov file works fine on another Mac in our house, which has identical software (Quicktime and OS) except that it's a newer intel Mac. Any suggestions?

Open the "QuickTime" and "Internet Plug-Ins" folder in the main Library of both computers and compare contents to see if the working platform contains additional required components or lacks any that may be causing a conflict.

I cannot import a Quicktime file (.mov) which I generated from a slide show out of iPhoto8 in iMovie8 (filename is grey); what did I wrong?

iMovie 08 will only import files that contain codecs that it can edit. It will generally import audio and video codecs that iPhoto generates. However, if your iPhoto slideshow contains a manual advance track, iMovie cannot edit this and therefore will not import. In iPhoto, check to see if you can do a timed advance rather than a manual advance. Then it should import.

im trying to send files to people that are quicktime files and  are at the most 20 gigs. these are large files. how do i do this? And the clients are PC people who are not computer savvy. Niether am I.
    You basically have three options:
    1) Physically send the content on optical media, USB flash drive, or a memory card,
    2) Send the files peer-to-peer via one of the IM services, or
    3) Post the files to an "online" server or storage device. Of the three, This is probably the most common method. If you do a bit of research on the Internet, you should be able to find more than 50 "Cloud" storage services available. Many are free but limit your free storage to 2-5 GBs of free storage. Some allow you to "earn" additional free space. All allow you to purchase additional space if needed. DropBox is said to dominate this form of service and supposedly accounts for up to 20% of all bandwidth consummed globally by browser-based file sharing services. Personal "Cloud" devices are also gaining popularity of late. These are basically UPnP protocol NAS drives which can also be accessed by browser remotely over the the Internet.
Each of the options mentioned above has its own advantages and disadvantages so you may wish to do a bit of research to compare benefits before making any decision.

  • Premiere CS4 playback .mov (quicktime file) in Mac

    Hi,
I recently acquired CS4 and the latest loaded Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz. I have problem with playing back .mov file - which obvisouly main NLE format for Mac. I've been testing with 15 seconds 1920 x 1080 clip - size about 150 MB which I transcoded from AVCHD via Cineform/TMPGEnc (PC)/VoltaicHD. Regardless of any transcoders I use, when I playback the file in the Source window, video is stuttered and very choppy. Rendering certainly helps that I can play nicely in the timeline but the major problem is that I cannot work with multi-cam monitor on. With only two .mov clips on multi-cam, it is way too stuttered and choppy that there's no way I can work with.  HDV footages captures directly from my Z5U works flawless even with editing mult-cam monitor - which obviously not .mov file. I even tested the same clip transcoded into .avi and it plays back nicely with multi-camera monitor on my old PC (Core2 2.0 GHz) running Premiere Pro 2.0. Thought it is Premiere Memory Management issue dealing with quicktime file (.mov).
Does anyone has the same issue working with .mov file for editing multi-cam? I'm so stressed out for the last few days - I want to go back to FCP instead. Thanks!

    Dan,
Forget about using CS4 for multicam HDV streaming. I decided to go
back FCP 6. I tried all the intermediate codec with various file sizes
for playing back multicam stream in CS4 but none of them working.
Either playing back is very choppy stuttered or doesn't play back at
all.  CS4 is not the right program for Mac. Funny thing is it works
flawlessly on PC which is less powered than my Macbook Pro. They
shoudnt release it for Mac.  Sorry I couldnt help you much. Please let
me know if you find a solution for this.  Good luck.

  • Windows Movie Maker won't accept my Quicktime file

can you give me the hints? I tried converting the quicktime file and it's worked, because now it has the windows media thumbnail, BUT it still doesnt work in the movie player..

Windows Movie Maker does not import MOV files as you surmised. Third party software is necessary to convert it for importation to WMM.
One such software(free) that works is: 'RAD Video Tools' from 'Bink and Smacker':
    www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm
The RAD Video Tools software will allow you to convert MOV files to AVI files, which will import into WMM
A FAQ page on converting files w/the RAD s/w is here:
    www.radgametools.com/binkhcon.htm
It may look intimidating at first but all you really need to do is:
    1) Browse to your MOV file, select it, then click 'convert a file' at bottom menu.
    2) Then in the new window that pops up, make sure the output file type is .AVI(the default output file type should be AVI), then click on 'convert' at right menu.
    3) Import the newly created AVI file into WMM
    Hope this is helpful,
    Buzzhead
