Quicktime fps

I am relatively new to QT. I am having a problem with frame rate! I have some QT video's where I have set a frame rate of 60 fps but will only actually play at about 38/40 fps. What am I doing wrong.

QT 7.6.4

What am I doing wrong.
Probably nothing. QT is designed to drop frames during playback under certain conditions. Basically, if the computer can't keep up (i.e., display dimensions are very large, compression format/decoding specifics, number and type of additional applications/processes open/active during playback, etc.) with content playback.

  • Shake quicktime woes

We're having a nightmare of a time rendering out quicktimes from Shake at 23.98 using the Black Magic Codec and using them in After Effects. Any Black Magic quicktime coming out of Shake and imported into After Effects is read with a doubled up first frame and missing last frame.
We've tried numerous image sequences of all different formats with the same results.
Other frame rates don't seem to have that problem. Only 23.98
Also Shake isn't embedding any of the usual quicktime fps, data rate, current time, duration, etc info in the quicktime movie inspector.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

Well the issue is we need to use command line Shake because we're writing a tool that automatically generates Slates, creates a quicktime, sends it to our dailies folder and updates our production management system.

  • Is there a way that you can convert an edited movie to quicktime if you shot on a T2i in 60 FPS?

I realized that I shot a project in 60fps on a T2i without my knowledge and I converted it back to 24 fps in streamclip. Then when I went to reconnect the media, there were no clickable clips...I first ran into this issue when the movie converted to quicktime with qlitches in it. Any solutions?

Wait wait wait.  You edited the footage...you have a sequence that links to 60fps stuff.  Then you went to the finder, changed the frame rate of the source footage, and then are trying to relink the project media to that footage?  Dude...there's a frame mismatch.  It won't work right.  Not at all.  OF COURSE you'll have problems. This is not how you do things.
You need to convert the footage.  Import that NEW footage into FCP.  Edit the sequence again with that new footage, in a PROPER sequence setting (meaning one that is 23.98).
Reconnecting 24fps media that FCP has set as 59.94 (the clips data will insist the media is 60fps, as that is what it was when you imported it)...is very problematic.
You need to bring in the newly converted footage all over again, and re-edit.  You cannot edit, go "Oh, my frame rate is wrong," and just convert the clips rate and reconnect.  Things don't work that way.

  • Quicktime jumps with 60 fps

I have a whole bunch of 1080p high resolution footage taken in 60 frames per second and when I play it in quick time it jumps... the audio runs smoothly but the video jumps as if its playing every other frame like quicktime isn't recognizing that the vid is 60fps and is playing it in 30fps. im using quicktime x. I know that its not my footage because when i put it into software and export as 60 fps it plays fine but it must just be the codec or something that is confusing quicktime. What do I do???

If the file doesn't play as expected then the data rate is too much for your CPU.
Nothing you can do but get a faster machine.

  • Quicktime seems to be showing FPS in to the top right corner of any media

Glitchy stuff happening last couple of days.
Any files I play in Quicktime are showing a yellow/red number in the top right corner while I play them. I assume this is frames per second display. The question is: Why the heck is this happening?
The same thing is happening in Safari Top Sites. This is very weird and something is not right.

I have discovered the culprit. I use an app called ATI Tray Tools to enable some functionality on the card (that I think Apple should be including..). For some reason this app enabled an FPS display for media. I have it disabled now.

  • Quicktime reads fps as 24.  fcp reads fps as 30.97

I'm working on a project with lots of effects.
I'm working in ProRes sequence 1080x1920 at 23.98. We've received a lot of Photo JPEG files from our effects team at 960 x 540. When we play these files in Quicktime, it reads as 24fps. When we import the files into fcp, it reads as 30.97 fps.
We've attempted converting the files to ProRes and forcing it go to 24fps, but the same thing happens. QT reads it as 24, and fcp as 30.97. When I drop the ProRes conversion into my 23.98 timeline, it indeed asks for a render.
Any ideas why this is happening?

    Here's a bit more detail...
    I'm working in fcp 6.0.3.
    Still quite perplexed by this.
As stated above, the files are playing back at 24 fps when opened in Quicktime. Upon importing into a 1080x1920 ProRes FCP project, the frame rate switches to 30.97. If I open the clip into the viewer, it will play back and some of the clips then go black at the end. Some of the clips will have one flash frame of white before going to black, others just go to black (this is just in the viewer). It seems to make mathematical sense - that is, a 1 second clip will have 6 or 7 frames of black which would account for the 30 or 31 frames of the 1 second 30.97 clip. But other sense, it does not make.
If I drop the clip into a 23.98 sequence, these black frames don't appear. (Also, the black frames do not appear when playing back in the quicktime player)
I guess my question is, is this something the effects guys are doing incorrectly (since some of the material they're sending reads as 24 or 23.98 in fcp, but the majority of it is 30.97), or is this a wacky final cut pro thing?
Thanks for any help or advice. Sorry for the lack of info in my last post (and this).

  • Export quicktime at 27,97 fps impossible

From FCP 7, I cannot export a quicktime conversion at 29,97 fps. even when I select it, it changes the frame rate to 29. not 29,97. I have QT X and QT 7 pro.
my Timeline is at 23,98 fps.

    >Compressor does not offer that setting.
So you need to make one. Compressor is a very powerful and flexible tool. Learn how to use it.
Load one of the XD Cam presets. Duplicate it.
    Click on Encoder.
Click on the video Settings button.
Select 50 Mb/s from the Compression Settings drop down menu.
You now have a Compressor preset that will provide the required output.

  • Why do I see random Frames Per Second (fps) in the QuickTime Inspector?

    Hi there could anyone help
I opened up some DV pal footage that I captured FCP then I opened it up in quicktime.
I problem is that in the inspetor it does not state the right fps for the clip for example 24.96, 24.98, 24.99 the clip does play at the right FPS 25. i final cut is says that the footage in 25 FPS so who am I to belive

Not uncommon to have small variations in the frame rate when viewing in QuickTime Player.
    Ignore it.

  • How do I set a fps rate in Quicktime's screen recording?

I've been trying to record my self playing League of Leagions on my mac with quicktime's screen recorder but my problem is that when I'm not screen recording I have 60 fps in the game, when I turn on the screen recorder and it drops to 15-20 fps. How can I fix this? I've already tried turning it down to medium instead of having it on high but that only brings me back to about 25 fps. It's also recording about 15-20 fps so even if I manage to play like this, the video still looks like crap.

I would swear that I used to be able to do this but in 10.3 I cannot. Of course I am trying to prepare for a big presentation right now so this means that either my memory created a fantasy or Apple downgraded QT!!

I had some 30 fps footage yesterday that QT stated was playing at 32 fps yet the clip remained the same length on playback.
Suffice to say I take that information with a pinch of salt.

  • Quicktime 10.1 fps setting

Is there any way to change a default setting on the fps that QT uses for recording?
I'm running a 2.8 GHz core i7 with 8 GB RAM and it seems silly that I can barely muster 15 fps on screen recordings.

    No.

Specific frame rate will depend on the platform/number and type of CPUs availalable, the specific compression format, capture dimensions, number of additional apps/processes simultaneously active etc. Most people would record to a dedicated device using a fixed frame rate option and then captute/import the resulting file in a manner that retaines the desired original or transcoded properties desired. The ability for QT to captuer/transcode is a convience at best and is not considered a preferred work flow by most serious users.

  • Movie fps VS playing fps in quicktime inspector

using a 30FPS movie as example...
movie fps is the real FPS of movie.
playing fps is the FPS of:
    A. the movie actual playback FPS (meaning even though it says 30 FPS it might not be)
    B. the movie is indeed 30FPS but playback FPS is just FPS of playback as effected by system performance in qt player. but in an NLE it will playback true 30 FPS

The actual FPS might be 30, but the Inspector in QT Player will tell you how fast IT can play back the video. Might be 30fps, might be 27fps...whatever it can do. But the actual REAL FPS will still be 30fps.

  • Screen record more fps QuickTime X?

    Hi,
With QuickTime X, you can do a screen recording. It works fine, except for that it seems to have a really low frame rate. Moving things look all jerky. Is there a way to turn up the frame rate? On the window to make a new screen recording there is a little arrow pointing down and it gives different options. Under "Quality", I have "High" selected. Do you just have to buy QuickTime Pro or Screenflow or something to get a higher frame rate, or can I turn this up?

Although you can't directly choose the frame rate, QTX does allow for one adjustment that may help. "High" refers to the image quality, not the video frame rate. If you choose "Medium" instead, the image quality will decrease (perhaps imperceptibly) but the frame rate will rise.

  • Quicktime export to DV-PAL 25 fps not working

Can anyone help with this topic? [http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6406820#6406820]
Cannot seem to export to 25fps DV-PAL and import to FCP for editing. Keeps saving as 29.97fps and putting my audio out of sync in editing.
    Please help!!

i used MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert and this has worked perfectly, guess it is too much to ask that QT Pro (which I have paid money for) do that job itself.
