Quicktime grabs Vista file associations in Internet Explorer (TIFF etc.)

Hi all,
I have a problem with Quicktime 7.6 and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista - maybe someone here knows a fix? I've tried everything I could think of ... to no avail... Many thanks in advance for any hints!
Trouble is:
After installing iTunes 8.1.1 including QuickTime, whenever opening a TIF image in Internet Explorer 8, QuickTime will display it. I don't want that, I need to set a different application to open TIF files or to have Internet Explorer ask me whether I want the file displayed or download it.
This is extremely annoying, since our HTTP scan server (HP) sends its files as TIF directly to the browser, so there is now link to the file to right-click on and chose "save as". Before installing iTunes/QuickTime, Internet Explorer asked me where I wanted to have the file saved - now it just displays the image using the QuickTime plugin and I can't save it anymore.
I tried to right-click the image in the QuickTime display, it tells me I would need to buy QT Pro to save a copy.
I opened QuickTime's options and disabled TIF and TIFF both in file types and in MIME types.
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime.
I right-clicked on a TIF file on the harddisk, chose properties and changed the program with which to open the file (first Acrobat, than tried Windows image viewer, then Photoshop...).
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime. (When I open a TIF from a folder on the harddisk, Vista opens it in the program I specified - but any TIF within IE8 is still displayed with QuickTime).
I opened Vista's control panel and set the standards for file type TIF/TIFF to a different programm.
Result: no change, within IE8 any TIF image is still displayed using the QT plugin.
I used Internet Explorer's Add-On settings to disable the QuickTime plugin.
Result: any TIF image is displayed as a red X, it doesn't ask me what to do with it or where to save it.
What can I do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance!
Best wishes
Frank

I used this link for tiff http://www.nrl.navy.mil/content.php?P=IMAGES
QT was opening the tiff files. When going into the QT control panel Browser>Mime settings>Images-Still image files I was able to uncheck tiff, which held. I was also able to uncheck all the file types under File Types tab(Images-Still image files) in the QT control panel. However the preference would not hold. Went into Start>Set Program Access and Defaults that also was of no help.
The only way I was able to get QT to release the tiff's from the website I posted was to go into the Folder Options control panel for File Types and change the tif & tiff from QT picture viewer to windows picture and fax viewer.
So not sure why the QT control panel will not respond, there are other file types in the Folder options control panel on this computer other than tiff's that are still associated to QT, but didn't try changing them, perhaps that needs to be done?
Good post I didn't realize this before reading your post, if I come across anything further I'll post back.

  • How To Remove PHP Extension File Association With Internet Explorer

When I select a PHP file to open it is redirected to be downloaded and opened (or I can choose to save) in Internet Explorer.  I need to test the file in different browsers.  How can I remove this automatic association?
I've tried selecting a php file from Windows Explorer and selecting a different browser with no success.  I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.  It's a big jump from my old one which used XP where there was no problem opening files with
    a php extension.

it sounds like you have a file association for .php, and, that you don't want to have one, so the original default behaviour would instead be preferable?

  • Quicktime content will not play in Internet Explorer 8 or Chrome

    Hi,
So I go to the apple website to watch some ads, the iMac videos and movie trailers.
I have quicktime 7.6.4 installed and working.
I have Tunes 9.0.2 installed and working.
I have Vista 64 bit home premium installed.
Internet Explorer 8. Quicktime content will not play. Neither the Mac ads, or the iMac videos or the movie trailers. I get the message "Quicktime required. Free download".
Google Chrome. Quicktime content will play the Mac ads and the movie trailers but will not play the iMac videos although it does try to load the video but fails to play it.
Firefox 3.5.5. Quicktime content will play the Mac ads and the iMac videos and the movie trailers.
    Help.
    Thanks

Just ran into this same problem after updating Itunes and Quicktime.
Got a Ipod Touch for Christmas, and downloaded latest version of Itunes and Quicktime and installed it without issue.
Quicktime movies (Mov) play fine, and mp3's play via Itunes, but in IE8 all I get is "QuickTime required. Free download" when I try to play movies on-line, such as trailers from the Apple Movie site.
Checked the plug-in folder for IE and all the QT files seem to be there.
I have uninstalled Itunes and Quicktime, restarted and re-installed but I get the same result.
    Anyone got any clues ?

  • FDF file opening in Internet Explorer--not in Adobe Acrobat Professional XI

    Good morning!
I have created a form in Acrobat Professional XI and have a submit button that emails that data back as an .fdf file.  This is working as it should.
However, on some of the returned emails, the .fdf file is opening in Internet Explorer--not in the associated file in  Acrobat Professional XI.
Is this the default?  Is there a way that I can specify that it always opens in Acrobat?
I looked on line, and found where you have to associate that type of file with Acrobat
    I have Windows XP
in My Computer--in Tools, Folder Options, File Types, I have where FDF files are associated with Adobe Acrobat.
Are there other changes that need to be made?
We have a work-around--we can import the file data into the form--just takes a little longer.
I tested this before I posted the form online, and it worked perfect.  Now that it is online, we are seeing some snags...
As always--Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your quick response!
no--it is an fdf file.  Has an .fdf extension.
One difference that I have noticed that the file that is opening correctly (in acrobat) was sent from a gmail account.  The file that is opening in internet explorer was filled out in Adobe Reader XI from an outlook email.
This is the window that appears when the file is opened.
On the Tools--the only items that are accessible from this screen is the AddOnTools--not all the tools sets.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

  • (Problem) Grey empty Word window shows up while opening .doc or .docx files with virtual Internet Explorer 9

    Hi,
First i'll explain what i did.
I've Thinapped Office 2010 Professional Plus SP2 with an Internet Explorer entry point. (Thinapp version 4.7.3)
Made some changes in the registry so .doc and .docx files will open in the virtual IE browser.
Here are my changes made to the registry:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Word.Document.8]
    "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000024

    "Word.Document.12"=hex(0):
    "Word.Document.8"=hex(0):
    Now i have this problem:
When opening a .doc or .docx file in the browser a ' download bar' appears.
My document opens in the browser as expected but, at the same time an empty grey Word window appears at the background.
The grey window shows not all the time when opening a .docx or .doc file , this is whats so strange about it.
Sometimes when i open the .doc or .docx file it opens without the grey empty word window. It seems like it's happening randomly.
I also tested it out with .xlsx files (Excel) but this go's all well.
Before i forget, this all runs on a Windows 7 Enterprise environment.
Does anyone know what causes my problem, or can anyone help me?

  • QuickTime Updates Steal File Associations

Today, QuickTime wanted to install updates to itself ... so I clicked "Sure, go ahead". And then I noticed that files which had previously been associated with Winamp were now associated with QuickTime. In other words, QuyickTime hijacked my file associations!
So, I ran QuickTime, to find out where to report his antisocial behavior. And right off the bat, it asked me whether it would be OK for QuickTime to reclaim all of the file associations it wanted. A little bit late to be asking, I thought. I said no.
This forum seems to be the only place to tell anybody anything. So ... how do I prevent this? (Other than deleting QuickTime forever?) HOW do I complain to Apple so they can fix this bug?
    Thanks.

  • QuickTime 7.5 file association control pre / post intallation

    Hey all ...
I've searched 'file association' and 'association(s)' here in this forum.
As I suspected (based on my own experiences with much earlier versions of QuickTime on Windows platforms), users of QT are still continuing to complain about their inability to control file type associations imposed by QuickTime, as recently as version 7.4.x .
Question: Will I be offerred a choice as to which file types to associate with Apple QuickTime 7.5 during install? If so, will my settings be retained by QT under all circumstances?
    Thanks, k_m

    I'm using QuickTime v. 7.6.0.
I have 15-minute video in h.264 with AAC audio that I cut and paste into two sections: I save the first half of the video and upload it to YouTube. The video on this first section works great, clear up to the 10-minute limit.
The second half that I cut and pasted into a new player gets saved and plays fine on my computer. When I upload this five-minute segment to YouTube, the audio starts right off playing about a second or two out of sync.
I have adjusted my audio rate to 44.100 and 64 bit or 128 and have tried cutting and pasting-to-fit the audio with no luck. Is this the kind of thing that you're experiencing?

  • Servlet-client file serialization and Internet Explorer

I've written a servlet that serializes a multi-page tiff file to the requesting user-agent. The servlet works fine with Firefox and Netscape Navigator, opening a dialog to launch the default handler applicaton for the "image/tiff" MIME type, but Internet Explorer chokes on the output, popping up an error dialog that states the following:
Internet Explorer cannot download <icn>.tif from <hostname>
Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
This is on top of a File Download dialog that shows the <icn>.tif being downloaded and a status of "Getting file information"

    Hi,
Start>Event Viewer.... post back with the error stack.
the first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test by running in noAddons mode. NoAddons mode leaves ActiveX enabled, but stops COM Addons and Extensions from being loaded. IE10+ has Tools>ActiveX filtering... some websites do not test
for this and may think that Flash is not installed on the client.
When posting internet related questions it is helpful if you include the full address of any websites you are having issues with.

  • Quicktime Hijacks Windows File Associations From Web Browsers

I recently reinstalled my copy of Windows 7 64-bit and have installed basically hardly anything on it. I have however installed iTunes (+Quicktime) for my iPhone and Winamp (and not even loaded Windows Media Player).
Basically when I uninstall Quicktime, I can just type an url in the IE8 (or Firefox) address bar with the .mp3 extension and download and save the file there and then. Only after installing Quicktime the browser will open the .mp3 in the browser window and play it embedded with the Quicktime player.
This is something I do NOT want, and it's crazy that Quicktime just takes over this feature without asking me first!!
That being besides the point really because I also cannot find the option in Quicktime's settings to undo this!!
When I go to Quicktime's settings -> Browser -> MIME types
It just shows that .mp3 is linked to Winamp (like I want it to be), but it still opens as a Quicktime Control Object.
Reinstalling IE8, resetting its settings, disabling the iTunes & Quicktime addons, even removing the Quicktime Control Object class from the registry... Nothing works!
    http://www.archive.org/details/testmp3testfile
Here you can find an mp3 file to use for testing.

Yes Winamp does ask for that, no Quicktime clearly doesn't (not when installing iTunes for my iPhone)
I have Winamp Lite btw, not Pro, but I find it not agressive at all. You can easily select or deselect all the settings during setup and they don't do anything else that you don't want to.
I have also tried that (changing file associations via Control Panel), and (I guess since it was set on Winamp already) it didn't make a difference. Mp3's & Wav's are still opening in the browser.
Besides this there is another similar problem, that whenever I install an upgrade of iTunes (and thus Quicktime), it also resets video file associations to Quicktime which were set to VLC Media Player before the update, WITHOUT asking (again). Though this is easily fixable by reinstalling VLC afterwards, it also is frustrating to say the least.
    Thanks for your help

  • Vista file associations can't find .ai files

I can't double click on an Illustrator CS4 .ai file and have it open in Windows. When I go to the Set Associations screen an tab down to .ai files it shows Adobe Illustrator Artwork 14.0 as the associated file. When I click on the "Change Program" tab I get a screen that does not show Adobe Illustrator CS4 as on of the choices for assoicating. If I "Browse" and find the Illustrator .exe application and click on it, it does not show up in the list of choices for associating.
Very frustrating.... Same is true of InDesign .indd files but I was able to change the association for Photoshop CS4 files with no problem.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks - Joe Rivlin

You misunderstood me. If e.g. you use WinRar, you have an Shell integration page in the preferences of the program. Likewise, many virus scanners have similar options. I know that mine has. Disabling these will reduce the number associated with the <any file> file types and may free up slots to get your AI relations working again. Likewise, dig into the Advanced options of your file associations. You may have a ton of print, edit, open etc. actions defined there that compete with each other, effectively disabling anything. As I said - if it's messed up all too heavily and all else fails, simply scrap the existing associations and create new ones. When you do, use CCcleaner to delete the then orphaned registry entries...

  • ITunes 8.11, Vista, File Associations and such

The latest version of iTunes appears to have messed up Vista, the desktop icons, and more. Today I got the message about iTunes needing to upgrade, I believe it is 8.1.1 or whatever the latest is (since it is today (Apr 11, 2009).
After running iTunes, I find that ALL of my desktop icons are showing the iTunes icon (for a wide variety of programs), double-clicking them does not work. Right clicking the icons, selecting "Properties", I see that the "Target" is correct -- in that it points to the correct file. However, the icon is wrong. If I change the icon from this screen, it shows on the shortcut properties dialog, but when I click "OK" nothing changes. Double-clicking does nothing. This includes icons in my Quick Launch Tray.
In addition, I have a program set up to run on startup (Trillian) that now runs iTunes instead. When I restart the computer I do not get Trillian, I get iTunes.
Something strange has happened to the registry, and the ONLY program I updated or installed was the iTunes update. This is very confusing and very frustrating ... I have no clue what to change to make everything work properly again.

Hmm. I posted a response that doesn't seem to be here.
The developers at Apple need to work on this issue. If I uninstall iTunes and reboot all is well.
However, it means I don't have iTunes installed on my computer. I have tried with versions 8.1.051 and 8.0.2.20 and neither of those worked either -- both of them came up with the icons going funky on me, and not working correctly.
There is something messed up in the registry, I would almost guarantee ... this is a serious issue and the QA team at Apple as well as the R&D team really need to get on this ASAP.

  • Why does Firefox 4 not let you save a pdf document using the "File" tab. Internet Explorer * give you an option..."Save as....". Can I get same function with FF4?

Can't save a pdf file using the 'File' tab in FF4.

Clicking "Save Page As..." in the Firefox menu should work fine. However, if the server you are downloading from is set up incorrectly, Firefox might recommend a filename which does not have the ".pdf" extension (e.g. "get_file.php"). In this case type ".pdf" at the end of the file name.

Have just migrated to macBook Pro from being a windows user for years. I don't trust backing up my important files to Cloud and would much prefer to back them up to an external hard drive as I used to on my Windows laptop. How can I do the same in my MacBook - I just want to 'right click' on a folder called 'documents' and copy everything over to the external drive. Can this be done?

It's called Finder and yes you can copy your documents to an external drive.  The drive icons on the side of your desktop invoke finder windows.  Inside are folders which can be displayed with details or icons.  You can drag and drop just like windows.
If you don't have drive icons on your desktop then click anywhere on the desktop and look at the top menu bar.  It will say "finder", now use the menu to select finder then preferences and turn on the icons.  You should also have a square blue "smile" icon on the dock which invokes finder.
