Quicktime Hardware Acceleration Formats?
Hey there,
For the first time while playing a 1080p Quicktime .mov trailer saved on my hard drive, I realised that incredibly only 20% CPU was being used as opposed to the crazy CPU spikes with other 1080p formats....
Does Quicktime 7 accelerate any other formats, or is it just .mov?
If so, is there a quick way of transcoding videos from other formats to .mov? MPEG Streamclip and Quicktime Export take an absolute age with other 1080p files!
Thanks for any help!
Thanks for the quick reply man! Really appreciate it...
So does the hardware acceleration currently only work with .mov files then? Because there is a clear acceleration compared with 1080p MKVs etc.
Also, has Apple mentioned exactly which formats will benefit from hardware acceleration in Quicktime X?
The new Windows Media Player on Windows 7 plays even 1080p .m2ts files at only 10% CPU thanks to the amazing hardware acceleration!!!

Choppy Video w/Quicktime Hardware Acceleration Unchecked
In every other application (PowerDVD, WinDVD. TMPG DVD Author, etc.) videos play smoothly without enabling hardware acceleration. In iTunes (7.6.1.9), I must enable the hardware acceleration checkbox in Quicktime to allow smooth playback, However, this compromises video quality. The gamma curve seems messed up, black levels are too high and music videos have a general "washed out" appearance. Playing the same video in Quicktime itself is perfectly smooth with hardware acceleration unchecked and the video quality looks great. Since iTunes uses the Quicktime engine, I do not understand why this is happening?
I've put in a support request to Apple but no resolution, just the usual suggestions to download the latest nVidia drivers (done), uninstall/reinstall (done), etc. Same results on fast Ultra320 SCSI drive or Serial ATA drive.I would try rolling back to an older version of flash. I think some if the recent releases of flash have been ultra buggy. I have quite a powerful laptop cpu/gpu and recent versions of flash are a bit choppy for me too. This forum has had a huge increase in posters with problems. Video should pose no problem for a computer even if it is a few years old.

How to tell if H.264 hardware-accelerated playback is working?
Hi everyone,
I noticed that when playing an 864x480 H.264-encoded file with Quicktime X and then with VLC, while checking the Activity Monitor app at the same time, I get CPU usage of 20~25 % with QTX and 15~20 % with VLC. This makes me doubtful that my MacBook is actually using the much-touted Snow Leopard H.264 hardware acceleration.
How can I be completely sure? And if it's indeed not working for me, how can I fix it?
Thanks in advance. Both movies tested appear in the QT inspector as H.264, so what's the difference?
What do you know about the encoders that were used with them?
Did you make them from scratch and process them to their current state or did you pick them up from some other source?
Until you test with something you have control over and know the underlying details, you won't learn much more I think. -
Hardware Acceleration Causes Blue Screen of Death - Resolution?
My computer running Windows 7 64 bit started crashing with Blue Screen of Death when Viewing YouTube videos or other videos like The Daily Show. The "solution" was to turn off hardware acceleration.
The crashing appears to have stopped, but now the video quality is degraded and jerky, to the point that the video can just freeze while the audio continues. So either I crash or I have poor video playback.
Has anyone found a solution to the BSOD that would enable me to re-activate hardware acceleration?
Symptoms with hardware acceleration enabled: Computer will crash after playing a handful of YouTube or other online Flash videos. Exact number of successful playbacks varies, but it will usually crash somewhere around the sixth playback (I cruise YouTube the way other cruise Wikipedia.) The screen will first flash black on one video, and when the next video starts, the computer crashes.

ThanksHi Chris, thanks for responding.
Browser: IE9 64 bit, and Firefox 17.0.1
Dxdiag attached, but are you wanting a version of this after hardware acceleration has been re-enabled and a crash has occurred?
Thanks,
Steve

ATI Radeon 9000 IGP Mobile driver doesn't have hardware acceleration
I installed the xf86-video-ati package and I don't get hardware acceleration. Glxgears gives a painful 80 FPS rate and nothing 3D intensive works, neither 480p/720p youtube videos. Also, it seems that the current drivers identify the card as 9100 instead of 9000, but I know that it's 9000 for sure. The laptop that I'm running is an old one, Compaq Presario R3000 with the Intel CPU.

Hardware Accelerated Video not working in 10.6.7
Hi,
I have had a problem with my 17" i7 Macbook Pro for a while now, and have been unable to find any information on it. When attempting to play H.264 videos, I get the following error messages in the Console:
30/04/2011 15:48:53 /Users/adnium/Desktop/WebKit.app/Contents/Frameworks/10.6/WebKit.framework/WebK itPluginHost.app/Contents/MacOS/WebKitPluginHost[14717] ava error: /SourceCache/AppleVA/AppleVA-4.10.23/Framework/VP3CoreMediaInterface/AVAFVP3Cor eMedia.c: IOAccelFindAccelerator failed for display number 3, error = 3758097084 [entry = 9303, did = 3f003f, service = 0, fbIdx = 0]

I should point out that this error appears any time I use an application which uses hardware accelerated video, including Quicktime X, Safari/Webkit, etc. I have searched around for solutions to this problem, but haven't been able to find anything.
Using internal/external display makes no difference either.
So far, I have tried re-installing 10.6.7 using the Combined Updater; repairing disk permissions; using various different browsers; uninstalling Perian; and waving a stick over the Mac. None seem to have solved this issue, and I'm beginning to suspect this is a hardware problem.
Does anyone know how I can fix this without sending it in to Apple?
Thanks for your help.Adnium wrote:

Ah yes, when you waved the stick over the Mac, you didn't tap three times on the monitor!
Ok, kidding aside, you did backup your data right? Should do so because the next step is likely a bit risky.
So you did reinstall OS X fresh, from the installer disks and then updated? Same problem? Right? ok.
Have you turned off integrated graphics in the Energy savings panel yet? this forces the use of hardware graphics.
Does it only occur in Safari, iTunes and Chrome?, cause all these are based upon the *cough* (insecure) webkit foundation. Perhaps Apple had to turn off somethings, perhaps that's reporting the errors.
Alas, if your using Firefox are you having any issues? -
No Hardware Accelerated Video without monochromatic flickering
I have an ATI Radeon 5700, using fglrx/catalyst driver (weird crashes with FOSS driver, libva problems).
In both Boxee and XBMC, iI set the hardware accelration option to auto-detect and it settles on VDPAU/VAAPI.
Videos play, however all videos (not just HD) appear in a flickering monochrome. If I set it to Basic Rendering, videos play fine, except for HD video which now stutter.
VLC can play the same videos without any problems.
So what should I do? Is there an amdcc setting I can manipulate to help with this, or do I just have to wait for for either media center to update their shiznit? I mean boxee barely works in arch (not without an insane amount of tweaking) but I'm fairly surprised XBMC gives me the same nonsense.
Thanks for your input!
XBMC: 10.1-1 (extra)
Boxee: 0.9.23.15885-3 (AUR)
Catalyst: 11.2-1
nomodeset is in grub, overscanning is in affect, and fglrx is loaded on boot.

Application can't recognize hardware acceleration, but it is definitely switched on
Hi there,
I'm a newbie to this forum but I've looked around before posting my problem and couldn't find any solution. Maybe there is someone who can give me a hint.
Here is my problem: I have two users on my Windows 7 desktop pc, Both users are playing Farmville 2. Until the last week's update everything was working fine. But now Farmville is displaying a message saying that hardware acceleration is off and the option fullscreen mode is unavailable. This applies to user 1 on firefox as well as on chrome and to user 2 on chrome only. In other words: User 2 can play in full screen mode with firefox but not with chrome.
I have checked everything mentioned on the help page Flash Player games, video, or audio don't work | Windows. (The Flash Player Information bos says that my OS was Windows 7 (32-bit) although I'm definitely have a 64 bit OS). I have removed Flash player and re-installed and turned hardware acceleration back on, which is necessary to play Farmville 2 in full screen mode.
Thanks for any useful help
Werner@Jeromie I hope this will help!

How do I disable the hardware acceleration in Flash player on a Windows XP machine remotely?
How do I disable the hardware acceleration in Flash player on a Windows XP machine remotely?
I have a few hundred computers running Adobe Flash Player.
The operation system is Windows XP.
They are Compaq 6005 desktop PC’s, with an inbuilt ATI radeon HD 4200 video card.
We have a persistent issue where viewing a flash video (e.g. something on youtube) causes the video card driver to crash. You are left with no video signal to the monitor. Audio continues and the computer still responds to commands. This only happens when watching flash video.
We have tried:
Updating flash plugin (numerous versions)
Updating the video card drivers (we have tried the last three video card driver versions, including the HP drivers and ATI drivers)
Updating the browsers (this problem happens with IE8/9 and Firefox10/11/12)
There seems to be two ways to work round this issue. One is to disable the video acceleration in the ‘troubleshoot’ section in the advanced part of the display settings area in windows. The other way is to start a flash video, right click, go to ‘settings’ and untick the box marked ‘Enable Hardware Acceleration’.
Doing either of these things allows the user to view flash videos with no apparent issues.
Is there a way to disable the hardware acceleration in Flash without visiting the PC? Perhaps an undocumented option in the mms.cfg file? I understand that you can use an option to skip the video card check, and so force hardware acceleration on, can you do the opposite?
Thanks in advance
Daniel.Hi.
I have had over 200 views, and no suggestions as to how this could be fixed.
I have also posted in the general flash forum, that thread has fewer views.
If I should put this question in a different forum please let me know which one.
If what I am asking is not possible is there a mechanism for escalating this issue or requesting a feature for the next version of flash?
Thanks. -
Problem with hardware acceleration on HBO GO
I just got a Zotac ZBOX AD02 (AMD E-350 APU w/ Radeon HD 6310) and in general it's working great. However, I have a problem with Flash video on HBO GO. For the first minute or so of steaming video, everything seems perfect. Video is high quality and smooth, CPU is around 50%. Then after a minute or two there will always be some visible video glitch and CPU utilization will jump up to 90-100% and playback becomes extremely choppy. So I'm guessing Flash hardware acceleration is working initially, then something happens that kills the hardware acceleration, and of course the E-350 CPU is not up the task by itself.
The really strange thing is that it seems to be specific to HBO GO. I can stream HD all day long from Amazon Instant Video and Youtube (at least when Youtube is able to dish it out fast enough). And it's definitely not a bandwidth problem. I have Comcast cable (20Mb down), and a bigger computer I have hooked up to another TV has no problem with HBO GO. I think the same problem happens on the bigger computer, but it's faster CPU can overcome the lack of hardware acceleration.
I've got the latest drivers from AMD and the latest Flash player (even tried the 11 beta) and have tried all the main browsers (FF, IE, Chrome), but it's always the same: 1-2 minutes of perfect playback and moderate CPU utilization, then jacked up CPU and choppy playback.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to contact HBO GO directly about this problem (support links just refer you to your cable provider), so I thought I'd give it a shot here. Is anyone else out there having this problem with HBO GO or any other Flash video sites? Any thoughts on what else I could do to track down the root cause?Well, my idea with 10.x on IE didn't really work. Results were not nearly as good as in Firefox, and I'm not willing to use 10.x in my main browser.
However, based on your insight on the wmode=transparent issue, I started playing around with a Greasemonkey script to force wmode=direct, and I think it actually works. I haven't been able to try it at home yet on the problem PC, but here on my work PC (don't tell anyone I'm not actually working) it makes a massive difference in CPU utilization. Without the script CPU is around 80-90% during video playback. When I enable the script it drops to around 20%. The only issue is that I usually have to refresh the page once video playback starts to get wmode=direct to take effect (start video playback, then once the video playback page loads, hit refresh in the browser).
My script is just a modified version of this one I found:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/67260
Here's my modified Greasemonkey script (hopefully the forum will allow javascript in posts):
// ==UserScript==
// @name Force flash wmode direct on HBO GO
// @namespace http://userscripts.org/topics/3090#posts-11620
// @description Force flash video playback on HBO GO to use wmode direct to allow hardware acceleration

Is there a way to have hardware acceleration without the text font change? I remember there was a way to go into settings before and getting hardware acceleration to work without the font change. Unfortunately I lost ALL my previous setting when uninstalling the beta ver Nightly and clicking delete settings :(.
Also, I fixed a problem before where firefox was visually eye straining to me, I think it was some settings in anti-alias tuner, but I cant seem to find the right settings that puts less strain on my eyes, anyone know? Thanks ahead. Currently using FF7.Try to toggle some Boolean gfx.font_rendering prefs on the about:config page to disable some features.<br />

Others to try:
* set gfx.direct2d.disabled to true to disable Direct2D

Problems with 3D Hardware acceleration on nVidia geForce 7300
I have a system with a Core 2 Duo CPU and a nVidia geForce 7300 graphic card. I am trying to run a 3D robotics simulation program (Webots 7.0.3) and its performance is abysmal. I never had graphic performance issues before---but then again, I never tried to run this particularly intensive simulation software. Other simulation software compiled from source (e.g. player/stage ) runs smoothly.
Where can I start to look to find out where the problem is?
Here is what I've been able to find out so far:
1. Hardware acceleration seems to be enabled:

2. glxgears reports very poor performance: about 60FPS. The software manufacterer says their product needs around 2000FPS to run smoothly
[stefano@polus]$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.157 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.781 FPS
3. The software (i.e. Webots) is proprietary, and their linux version is built against libjpeg version 6.2. Archlinux currently runs libjpeg 8, so I had to manually install the older version.
4. The software runs satisfactorily on my Kubuntu laptop, an old Lenovo T61 which has similar (or similarly aged) hardware. In other words, the CPU seems to be adequate and the prolem lies with the graphic setup in my Archlinux system, I believe.
5. I read the nvidia pages on the Arch website, the nvidia-linux pages and the Xorg pages on how to set up xorg.conf. It did not help.
Some info on my system are appended below.
Any hint greatly appreciated.

Why you get 60FPS? you have your answer there.
I noticed that and was wondering about it. I am not familiar with glxgear at all and I am not sure about the exact meaning of the statement about framerate. But one of the developers of the software I am trying to run sent me this glxgear output, obtained on a recent Ubuntu system running under VMWare (on a Windows host, I presume):
$ glxgears
11030 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2205.791 FPS
11492 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2298.289 FPS
What gives? Are they running a different version of glxgears or is there some hidden switch in glxgears that unties it from monitor refresh rate and makes it work as a benchmark tool (man glxgears did not report any)? -
Drivers are up to date! ATI Radeon HD 5850.
If there are problems with hardware acceleration disabled then try to disable OMTC and set this pref to false on the <b>about:config</b> page.
* <b>about:config</b> page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false -
I want to disable hardware accelaration because it freezes my pc at startup.
I am convinced that HA causes this problem.
My OS is Crunchbang (http://crunchbang.org/about/) .
My pc is a pentium 4, nvidia 5200 gpu, nouveau drivers.
I ask for help at MozillaZIne Forum (http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2767265) and at Crunchbang forum.
I disable HA in firefox (preferences and about:config) without result.
In FireFox General Options "Use hardware accelaration when available" is disabled.
In about: config gfx.content.azure.enabled is false and gfx.direct2d.disabled (user set) is true.
Also xorg.conf doesn't help me.
In xorg.conf (configuration file of Nouveau GPU driver) hardware accelaration is disabled.
The only solution is to disable nouveau hardware accelaration editing the boot menu (kernel boot parameter : nouveau.noaccel=1) and firefox works.
But HA is necessary for other applications like OpenOffice.
If HA is disabled menus, buttons and other UI components do not show properlyHello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
* [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Color management for flash player with hardware acceleration
I have tested the color management for flash player 10.2 with and without hardware acceleration (GPU) on different PCs with different video cards.
Videos that are played via flash without hardware acceleration on PC have proper color as designed in After Effects.
When I switch on hardware acceleration, the color shifts, for example green becomes lighter, although grey values are OK. I have tried this by writing a small Flash programme for playing a movie; I wrote two programmes one with color management as described in the article "Color correction in Flash Player" http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/color_correction_as3.html and another one without color management. In both cases I got the same color shift when hardware acceleration was turned on. From the result I concluded that color management does not work when hardware acceleration is on.
My question is: are there any plans to have color management for flash player with hardware acceleration (GPU) in the near future?
We need to play complex high definition movies streaming through a high speed local area network that need hardware acceleration to avoid stuttering.
V. S.Hi, LOL at my screen moniker. That's interesting that the FF beta has an Option for that. The only problem, is that I have heard that each browser must UNcheck the H.A. I'm sure you'll find out.
Hope that works at least for FF. Let me know if you have time.
I've been checking out Apple TV and Google TV. Just saved the links and some info, haven't had time to go further. I'd prefer Apple TV over Google tho.
I have a 55" HD Sony/Blu-ray Surround Sound Speakers, etc. I hooked up the VGA cable for Internet, and WOW on the Screen/Monitor!! Now I'm thinking about the iPhone 4 with VZ too, on their pre-order list for 2/3/11!
Hard to keep up with the Technology, moving faster today for some reason.
We are under the Snow & Ice warning, getting it now. Hope I don't lose power! If so, I'll be offline for sure.
If I find anything on that H.A. for IE, I'll let you know.
Thanks,
eidnolb
