Quicktime has hijacked my video settings

After I downloaded iTunes, all online movie clips began playing in Quicktime instead of Windows Media Player. I was able to fix the problem by uninstalling Quicktime, but then I couldn't use iTunes. Gaaaa!
Any suggestions?

When you install Quicktime it should get to the point of asking you if it should be the default player, just say no. If this somehow happens with files that are already on your system, you should be able to hold the shift key down while right clicking on the file in question and choosing
"Open With". Then you can just choose what you want to open the file with as well as put a check in a box that says something like "make this the default program for opening", then it will only open with that program.

  • Quicktime has audio, no video

Ever since "day one" of owning my iPod shuffle (over a year), Quicktime has never worked. I get neon color static on the screen, no video, but I do get audio. I have reloaded several times and finally gave up and just open my videos with Real Player. Today, I downloaded Quicktime's latest version alone (without iTunes) and I still have same problem with new latest program. Any suggestions? My videos are all Quicktime format.

Open QuickTime Player and under the Edit menu choose Preferences/QuickTime Preferences. This will open the QuickTime Control Panel.
Under Advanced tab and the Video area remove the check mark for DirectX and try Safe mode. Click the Apply button and try the file again.

  • How to keep Quicktime from hijacking all graphic settings?

In the past when I have been brave enough to install quicktime player it has always screws up my registry.
Since Apple, in all its wisdom, has not made a plugin for media player, in order to view .mov files from my son's Kodak camera I have to install quicktime on my machine. When I do it hijacks virtually all programs that display or edit graphics and makes Quicktime the default program. I never noticed an option to NOT do that automatically.
Where do I find those options in the quicktime setup program?
Also, if I forget to uninstall quicktime when I am done with it, it tries to do daily (or maybe hourly) updates, constantly demands access through my firewalls, does it all again every time I try to play a .mov file, and constantly intrudes upon my use of my own computer. How can I turn off these objectionable "features" and still leave quicktime installed on my computer?
    Any ideas?

I found it. By default Apple, in all its wisdom, sets Quicktime as the default viewer for a bunch of non-quicktime filetypes. When I start quicktime from the start menu and select Edit>Preferences>Quicktime Preferences it gives me the option of unclicking boxes that do the hijacking and it presumably returns control to the correct programs.
I also find there a box to turn off the incessant updates and the tray icon.
Problem solved. The last time I had to install it I could not find these options. Too bad they don't offer the options at the beginning of the setup process - it would give a lot more confidence in their product.
Of course, the perfect thing would be to offer it as a plugin for Windows Media Player so we would not have to have so many competing (and registry space hogging) programs on our machines.

  • After I upgraded to Mavericks, Quicktime has had to convert MPEG-4 videos to .mov

After I upgraded to Mavericks, Quicktime has had to convert MPEG-4 videos to .mov.... Why? Is there a way to stop that or to change the settings?
Your question requires more information. What does MPEG-4 mean to you? What file container and which compression formats are you referring to here? Is the MPEG-4 content "standard" or proprietary. Basically, depending on the file container and the specific content, QT X v10.3 may initiate a conversion ever where the individual data tracks are fully QT compatible. Proprietary compression formats will definitely do this. In some cases, the audio or video in one source container may simply be passed through to the MOV file while in another source container, QT X v10.3 forces a conversion of that same data track. In short, there are too many variables at this point to properly answer your question or attempt to duplicate your workflow.

  • Quicktime closes when trying to change video settings

I just bought PRO and now i cant even use it. I open my avi file, go to export and when i go into options and i click on SETTINGS for video quicktime beeps and closes... no warning message no error NOTHING. i can get into the audio settings just not the video. And its bothering me that theres no official support COME ON APPLE i just gave you money at least give me a telephone number come on.

I have the same problem - I have a MP4 movie file that's using the H264 codec that I need to play via a PowerPoint presentation - so I need to convert it to something more Windows friendly. I wanted to export the mp4 as a AVI using one of the lossless codecs I have which I would then convert to a WMV file using Windows Media Encoder. The minute I tried to change any video settings on the export feature on QT Pro QT Pro crashed. Of course looking around the QT page for any support information is pointless (because it's not there) - and I purchased Pro with QT 7.2 and can't revert to another version.
And looking around the +QT for Mac OS+ forum this is not just a Windows problem - it's a QT Pro 7.2 problem. I thought Apple applications were flawless and didn't crash??? +<insert sarcasm>+ Anyway...it would be nice to have something that works for my $30 rather than a overpriced video player.

  • Export mp4 files from iMovie to quicktime has no video

I have an mp4 video and import into iMovie 08. I did all the cutting and share it to the media brower (or export using quicktime). However, the video has sound but no video. Any things I need to download to fix it? I realized if I import another format video files other than mp4, everything works.

(DivX for some reason causes handbrake to crash so I didn't use that).
DivX, 3ivX, and Microsoft MPEG-4 are all proprietary compression formats. Suggest you try the TV preset for at least a "test" cut sometime. It is basically an H.264/AAC file (uses the X.264 encoder) at 2.5 Mbps. To test it just export a single chapter and see if/how it looks in iMovie '08 (or iDVD if you're not editing.) I personally prefer MPEG Streamclip w/QT MPRG component as I normally use AIC/AIFF or DV/32-bit 48.0 KHz in 16-bit (Big Endian) compression for iMovie '08/FCE/FCP source file editing.

  • Media Encoder CS6 Avid DNxHD video codec settings do not update in video settings tab

I want to encode a file to Avid DNxHD, but I am unable to change the resolution in the codec settings. I am choosing Avid DNxHD codec within the video codec tab, then clicking on codec settings and choosing a resolution from the resolutions pulldown menu. It will let me choose different resolutions from that menu, but after I hit okay, it has no effect on changing the video settings the way it's supposed to. For instance, if I try to encode a file that is 1280x720 with a source frame rate of 23.98, and I choose 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 145 8-bit, the frame size and frame rate does not change in the video settings tab. I am running Media Encoder CS6.0.2 on a Mac with OS 10.8.4. I am using Avid quicktime codecs v.2.3.7, because my system is running Avid Symphony 6.0.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No one ever responded unfortunately and I never figured out a work around.
In Media Encoder CC there is a system preset for DNxHD MXF which I've used
to yield Avid files. The weird thing is that the CC version does the exact
same thing as the CS6 if you choose quicktime, DNxHD codec, and try to
change the codec settings. None of the settings update. If you find out
anything more about this I'd appreciate getting an update. Thanks!

This is the quick and dirty way of doing it. Read the manuals (FCP, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro) for more information.
Control-click on the sequence name in your Browser in FCP, and select Export > Using Compressor. The sequence name will then show up in Compressor. Select the sequence name that just showed up, and then on the top of the screen select one of the DVD:xxxxxx settings for your project. I would recommend the Best Quality options. You will see 90, 120, 150 minute options. Pick the lowest that you can without it being shorter than your sequence. For example, if your sequence is 92 min, select the 120 min option. You will need an MPEG setting as well as the Dolby setting. Once you have selected your presets, set their destination - use Desktop for now. When you have selected the Settings and Destination for the sequence, Click "Submit" on the lower right of the screen. Batch Monitor will pop up, telling you the progress. When the job has completed, open up DVD Studio Pro.
Once DVDSP loads, you will see on the left side of the screen two large icons in the Graphical tab window. Select each one, control-click on it, and select Delete. Now click File > Import > Asset and choose each one of the files you encoded to your desktop. You should have an MPEG and a Dolby file. They will then show up in the lower left of your screen in the Assets tab once you have imported them. Select both at the same time, then simply drag them to the open space in the Graphical tab. It will create an icon like the ones you deleted. Control-click on the new icon, and select First Play. Put in a blank DVD, and then go to File > Burn. Once this is done burning you will end up with a DVD that you just put in your player and it will automatically play.
Like I said, this is quick and dirty. Read the manuals, play with different settings, and get comfortable with each application.

  • How do I install software w/out change to graphic / video settings

Installing software changes ALL my graphic and video settings, screwing up how I view video, my photo viewing / editing capabilities, and rendering jpeg files in MS Word documents unavailable (they are visible on the monitor but won't print out, can't change attributes).
Note: I had to restore my computer to a date prior to my first install attempt, rather than just uninstalling.
I tried reinstalling, unchecking the three default boxes during setup. That did not eliminate the problem. Again, I had to restore my computer to an earlier setting, rather than just uninstalling the software.
I don't want to use Quicktime to view video streaming.
    Any suggestions?

You can restore to the latest available software.

  • Video settings

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with a game not saving its video settings at the moment. Each time I load it, it defaults to the 640x480 display along with the rest of it's settings defaulting. I know this seems to be a game related issue, but when I loaded COD2 to see if that had the same problem it stated that 'Your computer had changed since the last time you played. Do you want to change the settings to suit the changes?" (Or words to this effect). I clicked on the 'Yes' box and again it set it up in 640x480 mode. The same happened with Doom3 & Command & Conquer so I'm inclined to think that something has happened somewhere that makes these games think that I now have a different monitor.
I can't think what might have happened, but I'm hoping (praying actually) someone might understand what is going on & help me out.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you
Have the games always changed your video settings on their own? Some games do that on their own, or there are settings on the games Option page for you to set manually.
Have you tried trashing the game preferences? If you do, I hope you saved their serial #s somewhere and/or you still have the game discs.

  • Quicktime crashes while watching video uploaded to pc from digital camera

I have several clips that I uploaded to my computer from my digital camera. They upload as quicktime movies.
If I just double click on the movie to open it, it opens using Quicktime (version 7.5 with latest security updates also done). The video is very jerky with poor quality colour flashes coming in and out and then after a few seconds it crashes and I get a message saying that Quicktime has to close and Windows will notify me if they find a solution to the problem.
Interestingly, if I right click on the video and choose to open the video using iTunes, the video will play perfectly - so there is nothing wrong with the video clip itself.

i am having the same problem, except when i try to open it using itunes it also closes down and gives me that error message. I also tried opening the files with nero and the problem occurs there also. i wish there was a fix for this because quicktime 6 worked great.

Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

  • What Video Settings to use in Premiere before adding to Presenter

I am editing several videos in Adobe Premiere and will then add them to a presentation with Adobe Presenter.  What video settings do you suggest (frame size, codec, container, frame rate, etc.) for use with Presenter.
    thanks!

good call, turns out it's not exporting at 500x375 like I tell it to. Instead, it exports to 640x480. The .fla document size is 500x375... yet when I go to quicktime export settings, it says 550x400. And when it finishes export, it's 640x480. huh??
well, I guess I can make my premiere project 640x480, not going to matter much when the final product is 320x240. I just can't figure out why it insists on exporting to 640x480
