QuickTime hijacks file type

I want to associate text files ending with .sml with the Aquamacs Emacs application. If I bring up the info panel on just such a file, and try to use the "Change All..." button, the "Open with:" selector immediately switches back to QuickTime.
I can associate an individual file with Aquamacs via the "Always Open With" checkbox in the "Choose Application" dialog box, but that association only applies to that file, and occasionally switches back to QuickTime under circumstances I haven't pinned down yet. (And it only works if I don't hit the "Change All" button.)
I've confirmed in System Preferences->Quicktime->MIME Settings that QuickTime is not associated with SMIL files. I found a Default Apps utility that confirms that .sml extensiona are associated with Aquamacs, and that the file type "EMAx" is also associated with Aquamacs.
I used the Property List Editor to look at com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and the entries for public.filename-extension for "lex" and "grm" that I also created for org.gnu.aquamacsemacs match the entry for "sml", and they still work.
All this happened when I forked out for the "pro" version of QuickTime. I've already asked this question in the QuickTime discussion group with no luck. I would be hugely obliged for any advice that leads to a solution, or to anyone who can forward this to whatever engineer in apple can do something about it.

Thank you for the suggestion.
I put QuickTime (and DivX) in the trash, and only then would files ending with .sml open with Aquamacs. Even the files that still had the QuickTime icon opened correctly.
However, when I re-installed a freshly downloaded version of QuickTime, the problem simply reappeared.
I'll try to see if people more familiar with Aquamacs know why this is happening.

  • Quicktime hijacks file types and won't relaease them

Have to have it for Ipod but I really hate Quicktime. It's worse than AOL on my computer. For God's sake let me decide what files you open. The only way I can see MPG files is to uninstall Quicktime.

Ok, this one is fairly simple:
    1. Go to a/the file in the filetype that u don't want quicktime to open (in your case a .mpg file)
    2. Right-click it and put your mouse over "Open with", when the thing pops up, hit "Choose Program..."
    3. Find the program u actually want to use (i'm presuming its Windows Media Player)
    4. Click it and then check the box below that says "Always use selected program to open this file type"
    5. Hit ok and u should be all-good
Well, hope it works out, post back here and if it dosn't I'll run through some more complicated stuff

  • QuickTime hijacks file types

I recently forked out for QuickTime Pro. Before that I had .sml file types rigged to open with Aquamacs Emacs (as SML source files). But now, .sml files are re-associated with QuickTime, and I can't switch them back.
I select a .sml file, select "Get Info," change the "Open with" option to Aquamacs via the "Other..." option, and then selet the "Change All..." button. But as soon as I select the "continue" option, the "Open with" option changes back to "QuickTime Player.app" without explanation.
If I don't select "Change All..." it does change the file type association for that file, but I want to change it for every file of type .sml.
When I go into System Preferences->Quicktime->MIME Settings, it claims that QuickTime is not associated with SMIL files (whatever they are).
    Thanks for any advice,
I'm on a MacBook Pro running 10.4.7 (which strangely enough isn't an option on the message posting OS selector).

    Thanks for the reply.

And as I said, the "sml" extension used to work just fine, so I don't think the problem is Aquamacs.
One other thing that happened between when it worked and when it didn't was that I installed DivX Player, which, interestingly, is the other default option that shows up when I try to change the application association of a .sml file. But I can't find any way in the DivX Player to know which file types the DivX player wants to control. And even if it did want to control .sml file name extensions, why does the association revert to Quicktime and not DivX?

  • ITunes updates hijacking file types?

I would like for my .m4v files to play in quicktime when I open them in Finder. I can get them to do this using the "Open with: .. Change All..." option in the get info window for a .m4v file.
The problem is that every time iTunes updates it takes over the .m4v files. I like that Apple keeps iTunes up to date (8+ updates per year for the past 3 years according to wikipedia). However I wish I didn't have to run around after them reminding Finder over and over that I want .m4v to open in quicktime.
How can I convince iTunes or the iTunes updates to quit playing tug of war with my file type preferences in Finder?

I haven't upgraded in a long time so I don't have first hand experience with what you are observing. When you install a program it tells the Mac what kind of files it can open. Apparently this is overriding what you have done previously to tell the Mac that you don't want iTunes to open certain files, you want Quicktime. I haven't heard of any way of stopping this from happening or altering the records, certainly nothing easier than just changing the "open all" setting on a file again.

  • Quicktime, Movie File Types & CandyBar

    I have just three questions:
    1) With the new upgrade to OS X Mavericks, it seems as though Quicktime is extra picky about converting certain file types when I open them, particulary avi's......which used to open with no problem in earlier versions of OS X. Is this a quirk that I'm going to have to deal with for now, or is there a codec I can install to rectify this?
    2) When listing different file types in Finder in OS X Mavericks, Windows Media Files (.wmv) are being listed as documents, and not movies (see below) This wasn't the case in OS X Mountain Lion. Is this another quirk or is there something I can do to have the .wmv files listed correctly?
    3) Any word on when CandyBar will be updated for OS X Mavericks? If not, is there another way to change the look of the default folder icon? I already know how to change the icons for specific folders, but CandyBar helped me change the look of the default folder icon, thereby changing the look of ALL folders on my Mac.

Quicktime files can be MPEG-4 video, and should be
    transferable to your iPod.
If you get info on the video file in question what
    does it say?
when i click get info it says the kind/type is a quicktime movie file.....i was jus mainly wondering why some podcast videos have quicktime video file, while others have the mpeg-4 video file...its almost like and OCD (obssesive complusive disorder) thng for me.....but as long as they can still transfer to the ipod i should be fine....

  • Setting Quicktime File Types

I keep checking the "default" Quicktime box under Quicktime "Preferences/File Types tab, to set my Quicktime File Types, but Quicktime is refusing to let me do this, insisting on checking all the file types and using itself to open everything. Particularly, I can't seem to get it to uncheck the "Video For Windows (AVI)" and "MPEG Media" choices, even though checking the "default" box unchecks them. However, when I re-open the Preferences window, they are always re-checked again! This is driving me C R A Z Y!!!
I've rebooted the computer, tried resetting my file types with my other programs, and Quicktime still insists on "taking over" and rechecking these boxes each time I reopen the Preferences/File types tab.
Can anyone help me stop Quicktime from doing this. I don't know what else to do to get Windows Media Player and my VLC Media Player back playing my video and Youtube video files! Aarrrrgggghhhh!!
    Thanx,
    Lida

    Hi,
I feel your pain regarding Quicktime 7.4.5 not letting go of file types. I didn't want to mess with the registry or security permissions, so I downgraded to 7.2. I'm contemplating upgrading to 7.3.1, but I'll do more research. The downside to doing this is that I cannot watch iTunes videos and the security risks. Since I use iTunes for music and don't go to fringe Web sites, it doesn't hurt that much. The minimum version of Quicktime that iTunes 7.6 uses is 7.1.6, so I'll stick with 7.2 or 7.3.1 until Apple fixes this.
There are problems with 7.4.5 in Mac OS Tiger, too. I'm using 7.2 there as well.
    Cheers!

  • Quicktime 4.7 file type association hijacking

I've got a really annoying little problem after upgrading to 7.6:
The update also updated quicktime ( to 4.7) with ALL file types associations active. Arrogant to say the least, but just a nuisance nothing more.
Problem is that I can't change them back: when I choose the default associations, click apply, click ok. And then when open the preferences panel again: they're all back
Any solutions? I really don't want to be using quicktime for all my multimedia files: it's a terrible program (too bad it's mandatory for iTunes).
    TIA,
    Dietbrand

I also have MAJOR problems with PictureViewer as of late. Not only does it have the 1993 file names limited to 8 characters (which I think is a problem with the installer/registry - it puts "C:\PROGRA~1\QUICKTI~1\..." as the path to it by default, whereas the older versions didn't do that.).
Also, recent versions of Nvidia's Forceware Drivers (I upgraded from 94.24 (July '07) to the latest 169.xx since I'm getting a new video card), cause PictureViewer to crash ONLY when it loads the stupid little "Buy Quicktime Pro" box. Perhaps this could be disabled or made not to crash? Pictureviewer is (soon to be was) my default/preferred image viewer for every image type.
Oh and there's a third problem with the new PictureViewer/QT combo, even if you tell PictureViewer to open a .gif, it will still load in QT (which I think has to do with QT's file association hijacking), unless I manually went into the registry and changed the associated within QT's part of the reg.
As for QT. This file hijacking thing is unbelievable. The "do not show this message again" button to stop checking file types on PictureViewer has NEVER worked. Why even have the option if you can't say no? Also, the buttons/checkboxes in the control panel/qt preferences do nothing, it auto reverts as soon as you exit the menu and I'm guessing it doesn't change anything in the registry. Also, even when QT is first installed, it default only takes over MAC-related formats. On the first run of PictureViewer though, it gives the "some file associations were changed" message? By what program, the QT installer? When you press Yes to restore (b/c it's the only way to prevent the popup), it auto takes over EVERY file format QT recognizes... ugh.
Thank god there is QT alternative. Anybody know any alternatives to PictureViewer that open pictures in new windows?

  • Quicktime refuses to release file type and icon associations

Has anyone else had this problem and how do I fix it?
Changing the preferences doesn't fix it. File type associations in windows doesn't fix it. Help?!

Ok, I kept getting nagged to upgrade QuickTime. So I did. Now QuickTime 7.4.1 has hijacked ALL my Windows image file associations, and won't give any of them back, no matter how many times I change QT’s settings. Why does QT even have a picture viewer? Who would use it? Or pay for it, as QT constantly nags you to do? Windows already has picture viewers, and there are thousands more free ones on the Internet. And why does Apple think that QuickTime is better equipped to handle my PhotoShop files, rather than my PhotoShop software?
I'm really peeved! If I uninstall QuickTime, my web browsers generate errors. But if I don't uninstall, I can't use my other programs! So at this point, the product borders on being MALWARE. Why would Apple do this??? Will the next QT version also include MS Office, email, database, and text file association-hogging viewers too, so that my pain is complete?

  • How can i disable dialog box asking to restore file type associations to quicktime for all profiles windows 7

Running a lab environment and need to be able to stop the QuickTime Player dialog that asks to restore file type associations to QuickTime.  QuickTime associations are working fine but this dialog comes up on on every user profile.  Need to stop the box from coming up at all

Clydecat, interesting I see the image you posted. QT 7 should have a File Types tab on the top, not on the bottom as the image shows. Don't know why it is showing up like that. My guess is a component of QT was removed or administrative permissions are in deny for QuickTime preferences?
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime\QuickTime qtp
QuickTime qtp is the QuickTime preference file. If that is of any help? You used to be able to delete QuickTime qtp if it was corrupted and a new one would be created on re-start. But that was with QT 6. So not sure if it currently works with QT 7, haven't tryed it with QT 7 myself

  • File type association, e.g. Quicktime - VLC; make it stick

    Hi,
I want to use VLC instead of QuickTime Player. Therefore .mov files are set up to be played using VLC.
After booting into Windows and rebooting Mac OS X, this set up is defaulted, meaning QU Player will be used. Is there any way to make my personal set up for file type associations and default application stick?
    Thanks alot
    n00b

If you click on file you want to watch with VLC, command-i gives you info, down the window it'll say "open with" choose your application and then "change all" this should then make all files that are the same open with VLC. If that doesn't stick repair your permissions.

  • How do i ADD a file type (such as Quicktime mov) that is NOT listed in the Content Type list?

All the instructions I find when searching for how to ADD a file type just explain how to manage how Firefox handles that file type. And that is not possible when the file type is not in the list.

Usually MOV is played by the QuickTime plugin. Some other plugins also may handle MOV. This is handled by entries in a hidden database, but you can view the contents if you type or paste about:plugins in the address bar and press Enter.
In looking at your plugins list under "More System Details" I don't see QuickTime. Is it disabled (set to "never activate") on the Add-ons page? Missing?

  • Quicktime crashes when opening any video file type.

Hi, I've been having this problem for quite a long time now. When attempting to open a quicktime file or any other type of video file, the program crashes. It does not report any sort of error message. I've updated both quicktime and windows. I've tried everything that has been suggested in prior posts and have yield no results. This is really irrating me. I don't want to have wasted money on this program and I need this for class. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

The files I'm most concerned with playing are my animations exported from Final Cut and from another system's quicktime. These usually are quicktimes or .wma's that are either uncompressed or with a variety of compression, usually DV-NTSC, H.264, HDV 1080 60i, or mpeg4 for the web. But as I've professed before, it seem that the file type isn't necessarily factor. Any video file that should play in Quicktime does not and the program crashes. Upon this I get a very vague error message which reads "Quicktime Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." That unfortunately is as much detail as I can give at the moment. I know this is a vague problem and that my information is just as vague, but that is all I have gathered. Anything is appreciated.

  • File type/quicktime/streaming problem

I use a stock trading app (thinkorswim) that links to a CNBC streaming video. Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard, when I'd click the link, VLC (a third party video app) would open and start streaming the video. Now when I click it, I get an error message saying "QuickTime Player must be installed to run this application."
I think this is a file type issue. If the video was a static file, I'd do a Get Info on it and tell it to open in VLC. But it's a streaming video triggered from another app, so I don't know how to make it work.
    Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. Was using Flip4MAC and have also tried Flip4MAC Beta which is supposed to work on Snow Leopard.... No Soap. If you have any responses from other places, I'd like to know.

  • What video file type is best for quicktime?

I have a Macbook Pro and use Quicktime to play videos I download from p2p programs. I often find that many of the videos do not work. Messages such as "this is not a video file." and "additional software is needed to play this video" often pop up.
Is there a certian file type (mp4, mov, etc.) that works best that I should look for? If not, what can I do to prevent this?
    Thanks for any help.

The formats that QuickTime 7.x can natively handle can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html
In addition to those, a number of additional formats can be played with the addition of third-party codecs such as Perian and the Flip4Mac codecs. Some other codecs also exists, for very specific systems such as Avid.
