Quicktime hijacks file types and won't relaease them

Have to have it for Ipod but I really hate Quicktime. It's worse than AOL on my computer. For God's sake let me decide what files you open. The only way I can see MPG files is to uninstall Quicktime.

Ok, this one is fairly simple:
1. Go to a/the file in the filetype that u don't want quicktime to open (in your case a .mpg file)
2. Right-click it and put your mouse over "Open with", when the thing pops up, hit "Choose Program..."
3. Find the program u actually want to use (i'm presuming its Windows Media Player)
4. Click it and then check the box below that says "Always use selected program to open this file type"
5. Hit ok and u should be all-good
Well, hope it works out, post back here and if it dosn't I'll run through some more complicated stuff

  • QT stole all my file associations and won't give them back

    Once I installed the latest iTunes, Quicktime decided to steal all my file associations. Now anytime I click on an mp3 on a website, I get that annoying QuickTime plugin that takes up the entire page when I used to get a Windows Media Player plugin that either opened as a new instance, or in the left media column.
    I went into the MIME and File Types settings for Quicktime and removed everything, I also went into my Windows File Types and made sure mp3s were set to play with Windows Media Player. None of this helped.
    How can I get my file associations back?
    Thanks.

    Try altering the tag for the ringtone: right-click on a ringtone in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the Info tab and make a slight change to the Artist, tap OK and try syncing again.  If it transfers to your phone do the same for the others.

  • QuickTime hijacks file type

    I want to associate text files ending with .sml with the Aquamacs Emacs application. If I bring up the info panel on just such a file, and try to use the "Change All..." button, the "Open with:" selector immediately switches back to QuickTime.
    I can associate an individual file with Aquamacs via the "Always Open With" checkbox in the "Choose Application" dialog box, but that association only applies to that file, and occasionally switches back to QuickTime under circumstances I haven't pinned down yet. (And it only works if I don't hit the "Change All" button.)
    I've confirmed in System Preferences->Quicktime->MIME Settings that QuickTime is not associated with SMIL files. I found a Default Apps utility that confirms that .sml extensiona are associated with Aquamacs, and that the file type "EMAx" is also associated with Aquamacs.
    I used the Property List Editor to look at com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and the entries for public.filename-extension for "lex" and "grm" that I also created for org.gnu.aquamacsemacs match the entry for "sml", and they still work.
    All this happened when I forked out for the "pro" version of QuickTime. I've already asked this question in the QuickTime discussion group with no luck. I would be hugely obliged for any advice that leads to a solution, or to anyone who can forward this to whatever engineer in apple can do something about it.

    Thank you for the suggestion.
    I put QuickTime (and DivX) in the trash, and only then would files ending with .sml open with Aquamacs. Even the files that still had the QuickTime icon opened correctly.
    However, when I re-installed a freshly downloaded version of QuickTime, the problem simply reappeared.
    I'll try to see if people more familiar with Aquamacs know why this is happening.

  • QuickTime hijacks file types

    I recently forked out for QuickTime Pro. Before that I had .sml file types rigged to open with Aquamacs Emacs (as SML source files). But now, .sml files are re-associated with QuickTime, and I can't switch them back.
    I select a .sml file, select "Get Info," change the "Open with" option to Aquamacs via the "Other..." option, and then selet the "Change All..." button. But as soon as I select the "continue" option, the "Open with" option changes back to "QuickTime Player.app" without explanation.
    If I don't select "Change All..." it does change the file type association for that file, but I want to change it for every file of type .sml.
    When I go into System Preferences->Quicktime->MIME Settings, it claims that QuickTime is not associated with SMIL files (whatever they are).
    Thanks for any advice,
    I'm on a MacBook Pro running 10.4.7 (which strangely enough isn't an option on the message posting OS selector).

    Thanks for the reply.

And as I said, the "sml" extension used to work just fine, so I don't think the problem is Aquamacs.
    One other thing that happened between when it worked and when it didn't was that I installed DivX Player, which, interestingly, is the other default option that shows up when I try to change the application association of a .sml file. But I can't find any way in the DivX Player to know which file types the DivX player wants to control. And even if it did want to control .sml file name extensions, why does the association revert to Quicktime and not DivX?

  • Quicktime refuses to release file type and icon associations

    Has anyone else had this problem and how do I fix it?
    Changing the preferences doesn't fix it. File type associations in windows doesn't fix it. Help?!

    Ok, I kept getting nagged to upgrade QuickTime. So I did. Now QuickTime 7.4.1 has hijacked ALL my Windows image file associations, and won't give any of them back, no matter how many times I change QT’s settings. Why does QT even have a picture viewer? Who would use it? Or pay for it, as QT constantly nags you to do? Windows already has picture viewers, and there are thousands more free ones on the Internet. And why does Apple think that QuickTime is better equipped to handle my PhotoShop files, rather than my PhotoShop software?
    I'm really peeved! If I uninstall QuickTime, my web browsers generate errors. But if I don't uninstall, I can't use my other programs! So at this point, the product borders on being MALWARE. Why would Apple do this??? Will the next QT version also include MS Office, email, database, and text file association-hogging viewers too, so that my pain is complete?

  • HT5409 I asked if AVCHD files can be played on Mac and the support site says to simply click on the icon and quick time will play it. A big lie. Just say it won't support the file type and tell us what apps to get.

    I asked if AVCHD files can be played on Mac and the support site says to simply click on the icon and quick time will play it. A big lie. Just say it won't support the file type and tell us what apps to get. anybody?

    I also had issues opening AVCHD files on case-sensitive filesystems.
    You can try these steps to solve the issue:
    Right click on the AVCHD file and select 'Show Package Contents'
    Right click on the BDMV file and select 'Show Package Contents'
    Rename index.bdm to INDEX.BDM (it seems that all files in the BDMV folder should be in UPPERCASE for Quicktime to open the AVCHD file).
    Go back twice and try again to double-click on the AVCHD file (Quicktime should open a window showing the multiple clips, as expected).

  • Dreamweaver setting wrong file type and creator codes

    First of all, I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 on an Intel-based
    Mac, with Dreamweaver CS3 9.0 build 3481.
    I have a site defined where I connect to my web server via
    FTP. On my server, I just upgraded my forum software to PHPBB 3.0,
    which created a new /forums/ directory. My plan is to use
    Dreamweaver to download that new /forums/ directory to my local
    site where I can edit the files. Inside the forums folder are
    several types of files, like ".php" files, ".htm" files, ".gif"
    files, etc.
    So, upon downloading the /forums/ folder to my local machine
    by dragging and dropping it (in Dreamweaver) from the remote site
    to the local site, I noticed that Dreamweaver insists on setting
    HFS file type and creator codes for files it recognizes, based on
    the filename extension.
    I've connected to the same server using the Finder and
    Transmit, and copied the remote /forums/ folder over to my local
    machine. Neither of those copies have files with file types and
    creator codes set, meaning they aren't actually set on the remote
    files and that this is indeed something Dreamweaver is doing on the
    fly as it downloads the files.
    I'm wondering if there's any way possible to disable this
    behavior, and just download the files like they are on the server?
    (File extension only). To make matters worse, on my Intel-based
    Mac, it's not even setting the proper codes, as you can see in the
    following image:
    http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/images/dreamweaver.png
    Notice for the ".php" document, it's attempting to set a file
    type of 'TEXT' and a creator code of 'DmWr' (DreamWeaver's creator
    code), but because the Dreamweaver developers didn't bother to take
    into account the byte-ordering differences between PowerPC Macs and
    Intel Macs, the codes are written in reverse: 'TEXT' becomes
    'TXET', and 'DmWr' becomes 'rWmD'. (If you're going to use
    low-level routines such as FSSetCatalogInfo() to set the file types
    and creator codes, you need to call CFSwapInt32HostToBig() on the
    OSType values before doing so, to make sure they're in Big-endian
    format).
    Anyone know where the conversion information is stored?
    Thanks in advance.....

    Creator codes are totally deprecated in snow leopard. as for a workaround you can use something like this.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    on open these_items
    repeat with this_item in these_items
    tell application "Finder"
    set the_file to POSIX path of (this_item as alias)
    tell application "System Events"
    set default application of file (the_file) to ("Main HD:Applications:Preview.app" as alias)
    end tell
    end tell
    end repeat
    end open</pre>
    save it as an application and drop files onto it to set them to open with Preview.

  • Saving multiple file types and sizes

    I design logos using Illustrator. After the design is approved I need to save it in multiple different file types and sizes. (ie. Jpg Hi, Med, Lo; tif; eps; pdf)
    Does anyone know of a script that can do this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    I don't know of an existing script that does exactly this. You could make one though. Saving an Illustrator document to both 'eps' and 'pdf' formats is very straight forward once you know which options you want. Personally I would use Photoshop to create the required 'jpegs' Illustrator does not export to any given resolution only scaling at 72dpi… Open either the 'eps' or 'pdf' in Photoshop resize and save 3 times.

    my download was an unknown file type and cannot be opened

    Sounds like the file extension was dropped when you saved your converted document.  Make sure that the .docx (Word) or .xlsx (Excel) extension appears after your file name when saving your document.
    You should be able to rename the document you already converted by adding the appropriate extension.  The file should then open as expected.
    Let us know how it goes!

  • My ipod touch now skips songs I bought from itunes (only the ones from 2013 to now) and won't play them. How do I fix this?

    Hey folks! My iPod Touch now skips songs I bought from iTunes (but only the songs I have purchased since 2013) and won't play them. What do I do?

    First try deleting the songs and redownloading them
    Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Next
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
    Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
    All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • File Type and Size for Video iPod

    I have the latest ipod that does it all, but I am a little concerned about the lack of control on the file type size. I can export a mp4 file with my own settings so it isn't such a large file but it won't load or play. I can convert the file but it makes it the standard file size which is larger than I want it to be. Isn't there a way to save my own settings and still have it play video?
    Thanks for any info from anyone.

    I want to save a higher and better compression and not such high quality settings as the ipod standards settings are.
    You can't.

  • What file type and codec should I use for creating a file to send to have an HDCAM copy made

    I'm prepping to take a video file of my film into a tape dubbing house to have an HDCAM copy of my project made. I'm using a PC, so Apple ProRes is not an option. What file type, codec, and settings do you recommend?
    I was considering MXF, but the highest quality codec is XDCAM 50, which only does up to 50Mbps (I think). I believe HDCAM works at 140Mbps, so I would rather not give them a file that's compressed to almost 1/3rd that, especially since the source is a 5K 5120x2560 project. DPX maybe? I've never exported DPX before because it's not an option on my copy of CS6 - maybe that has to be downloaded separately? I was considering a Quicktim in H.264 at 140Mbps, but I think that would mean some serious rendering for the tape house. I would like to be able to offer them a few different options and see what they prefer, but this is an area where my knowledge runs thin. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm hoping there's an industry standard that I can stick to.

    Your CS6 'Format' dropdown list should include DPX:
    Among the options you listed, DPX would be my choice.
    Be certain the dupe house can accept these files before proceeding.
