Quicktime Hijacks Windows File Associations From Web Browsers

I recently reinstalled my copy of Windows 7 64-bit and have installed basically hardly anything on it. I have however installed iTunes (+Quicktime) for my iPhone and Winamp (and not even loaded Windows Media Player).
Basically when I uninstall Quicktime, I can just type an url in the IE8 (or Firefox) address bar with the .mp3 extension and download and save the file there and then. Only after installing Quicktime the browser will open the .mp3 in the browser window and play it embedded with the Quicktime player.
This is something I do NOT want, and it's crazy that Quicktime just takes over this feature without asking me first!!
That being besides the point really because I also cannot find the option in Quicktime's settings to undo this!!
When I go to Quicktime's settings -> Browser -> MIME types
It just shows that .mp3 is linked to Winamp (like I want it to be), but it still opens as a Quicktime Control Object.
Reinstalling IE8, resetting its settings, disabling the iTunes & Quicktime addons, even removing the Quicktime Control Object class from the registry... Nothing works!
http://www.archive.org/details/testmp3testfile
Here you can find an mp3 file to use for testing.

Yes Winamp does ask for that, no Quicktime clearly doesn't (not when installing iTunes for my iPhone)
I have Winamp Lite btw, not Pro, but I find it not agressive at all. You can easily select or deselect all the settings during setup and they don't do anything else that you don't want to.
I have also tried that (changing file associations via Control Panel), and (I guess since it was set on Winamp already) it didn't make a difference. Mp3's & Wav's are still opening in the browser.
Besides this there is another similar problem, that whenever I install an upgrade of iTunes (and thus Quicktime), it also resets video file associations to Quicktime which were set to VLC Media Player before the update, WITHOUT asking (again). Though this is easily fixable by reinstalling VLC afterwards, it also is frustrating to say the least.
Thanks for your help

  • Quick Time Hijacks Windows File Associations Only From Web Browsers

It took me 6 hours this morning to conclusively prove that Quick Time (latest version) isn’t playing well with web browsers on my Windows XP Pro (SP3) machine (nothing new here I guess).
I develop web sites which get their content from local hard or DVD/CD drives (as opposed to from the internet). All my Windows file associations for audio/video file types point to Windows Media Player (WMP) so that when one of my web pages looks for a file type of say .mpg or .mp3, WMP is opened and the file is played. Pretty straight forward and has worked fine for years.
Some time in the last few months (and I now strongly suspect after a Quick Time update) my browsers (all of them….. IE, Firefox, and Chrome) started opening Quick Time instead of WMP when my HTML goes to open any media file type. I’ve checked my Windows file associations which all still point to WMP. I also note that when I open one of my media files from a file utility such as Windows Explorer or my aftermarket file utility (as opposed to from a browser), they correctly open in WMP. So…….. its only from browsers that QT hijacks my intended media player.
In Internet Explorer I’ve gone to “Manage Add-Ons” and “disabled” Quick Time. This in fact causes QT not to be opened but instead a blank web page appears containing only the browser’s little error box with a big red X in it which usually means a picture file is missing…… WMP is not launched even though it is enabled in Manage Add-Ons and QT is disabled.
The only way I’ve found to fix this problem is to uninstall Quick Time in which case everything works fine. (My objection to Quick Time as my default media player is that even the latest version doesn’t reliably play video created for Windows file types.)
Can anyone tell me how to make Quick Time co-exist on my computer without hijacking my attempts to get at WMP from browsers?
The only reason Quick Time has existed on my computer in recent years is so I have access to iTunes. I’ve uninstalled both Quick Time and iTunes till I find a solution to this problem which means iTunes isn’t selling me anything in the mean time.

I'm having the same issue that Quicktime hijacks file associations.

  • QuickTime Updates Steal File Associations

Today, QuickTime wanted to install updates to itself ... so I clicked "Sure, go ahead". And then I noticed that files which had previously been associated with Winamp were now associated with QuickTime. In other words, QuyickTime hijacked my file associations!
So, I ran QuickTime, to find out where to report his antisocial behavior. And right off the bat, it asked me whether it would be OK for QuickTime to reclaim all of the file associations it wanted. A little bit late to be asking, I thought. I said no.
This forum seems to be the only place to tell anybody anything. So ... how do I prevent this? (Other than deleting QuickTime forever?) HOW do I complain to Apple so they can fix this bug?
    Thanks.

I used this link for tiff http://www.nrl.navy.mil/content.php?P=IMAGES
QT was opening the tiff files. When going into the QT control panel Browser>Mime settings>Images-Still image files I was able to uncheck tiff, which held. I was also able to uncheck all the file types under File Types tab(Images-Still image files) in the QT control panel. However the preference would not hold. Went into Start>Set Program Access and Defaults that also was of no help.
The only way I was able to get QT to release the tiff's from the website I posted was to go into the Folder Options control panel for File Types and change the tif & tiff from QT picture viewer to windows picture and fax viewer.
So not sure why the QT control panel will not respond, there are other file types in the Folder options control panel on this computer other than tiff's that are still associated to QT, but didn't try changing them, perhaps that needs to be done?
Good post I didn't realize this before reading your post, if I come across anything further I'll post back.

  • Websites changing my file associating from Acrobat Pro to Reader

Once before everytime I clicked on a pdf, it would open with Reader. Even when I told it to open WITH Acrobat pro. The IT man came and changed my windows file association via the Control Settings, I restarted and the problem was resolved.
BUT now when I go to a website and use the snapshot tool to capture a map, when I try to open Acrobat Pro, it opens in Reader! I re-associated my settings in the control box but it reverts to Reader. What to do. I want to make a pdf of the image on the website.
    Acro 7 Pro, XP

Go to the task listing and disable AcroRd32. Then also disable the loading of that plugin in the START menu. You are finding why Adobe does not recommend using both Acrobat and Reader on the same machine.

  • QuickTime 7.5 file association control pre / post intallation

    Hey all ...
I've searched 'file association' and 'association(s)' here in this forum.
As I suspected (based on my own experiences with much earlier versions of QuickTime on Windows platforms), users of QT are still continuing to complain about their inability to control file type associations imposed by QuickTime, as recently as version 7.4.x .
Question: Will I be offerred a choice as to which file types to associate with Apple QuickTime 7.5 during install? If so, will my settings be retained by QT under all circumstances?
    Thanks, k_m

    I'm using QuickTime v. 7.6.0.
I have 15-minute video in h.264 with AAC audio that I cut and paste into two sections: I save the first half of the video and upload it to YouTube. The video on this first section works great, clear up to the 10-minute limit.
The second half that I cut and pasted into a new player gets saved and plays fine on my computer. When I upload this five-minute segment to YouTube, the audio starts right off playing about a second or two out of sync.
I have adjusted my audio rate to 44.100 and 64 bit or 128 and have tried cutting and pasting-to-fit the audio with no luck. Is this the kind of thing that you're experiencing?

  • Quicktime hijacking media files in Safari?

So anytime a file is available to download from a website - Quicktime grabs it - and won't let you save it locally without paying for Quicktime Pro?
    http://truselfmusic.com/downloads/slightinst.mp3
Am I wrong? Is there another easy option for Safa-no wait - all Mac (QT) users?
If not - this is utter Micro$oft type crapola IMHO trying to make people pay to save files already available and saveable from the net for FREE.
    Many thanks...

Paying for Quicktime Pro has nothing to do with it. By right-clicking the link you provided it can be downloaded to your hard drive. Select the "Download Linked File" option. By also holding down the Option key while right-clicking the link you can select where the file is downloaded to. Select the "Download Linked File as..." option. If you have a one button mouse you can accomplish the task by holding down the control key or option-control keys while clicking the link. Quicktime, RealPlayer, and Windows Media Player will all grab the file and play it instead of downloading it unless you bypass the function.
Also be aware that code can be added to media files that tell Quicktime not to allow saving the file. There are ways around this too but that's another story to tell.
Finally, don't get your dander up and accuse Apple of being M$-like until you know what you're talking about.
ps. Consider buying the Quicktime Pro upgrade anyway. It's worth every penny for the additional features. Remember, Apple fully supports a feature complete version of Quicktime for Windows. Microsoft, on the other hand, has ceased development of WMP for the Mac platform and has left Mac users twisting in the wind as far as windows media files are concerned. Which company do think care for its customers more.

  • JSP : latest  JSTL, File Upload from web form Client to Server Question!

I understand that within a JSP, It is possible to read a file from the Client by opening a Stream somehow.
How do I code, within jsp/servlet (non tag) java code inside <% %>

  • Change windows file permission from Oracle PL/SQL

    Hi
I am using APEX4.2 to produce a graph ( by AnyChart) and used the simple pop up windows to save the graph to a PNG image file called test.png in the windows location ( being X:\APEX_CHART where X is pointing to windows server /abc/Transfer/APEX_CHART/ ).
Now I wanted to be able to change the permission of this windows file to be private to one group and not available to other public users.   Can I achieve this via API from Oracle PL/SQL ?
    Thanks

That doesn't look like a Windows path. Do you mean \\abc\Transfer\APEX_CHART?

Is the database on the same server as \\abc\Transfer\APEX_CHART?

  • Reader Hijacks All File Associations

Hi.  New to this forum, thanks for the opportunity.
Kind of an odd problem, really.  Basically, when I left click on a file to launch or open it, Adobe Reader (9.3.2) is called and unless it's an appropriate Adobe file, Reader doesn't recognize the file and I get an error message.  I'm not sure what triggered this as I'm not the normal user of the PC, but the PC is not subject to much in the way of crazy activities and it might have happened when the software was updated (but prior to the latest update to 9.3.2).
I've looked at file associations and don't see where Reader is being called upon.  Further, if I right click on the file and choose Read, Open, or Run as, the file is correctly launched.  However, if it's left clicked, or the PC attempts to run the program itself. Adobe Reader is called on and I get an error message.
I've tried to correct it using the Open With option, but no luck so far because the Open With option is not available (as least using the normal windown I'm accustomed to.)
Does anyone have any experience with this or have some idea how I can fix it.  I'm not sure where the initial requirement for Adobe Reader to be launched in these instances is coming from.  Any suggestions or other thoughts greatfully welcomed.
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime grabs Vista file associations in Internet Explorer (TIFF etc.)

    Hi all,
I have a problem with Quicktime 7.6 and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista - maybe someone here knows a fix? I've tried everything I could think of ... to no avail... Many thanks in advance for any hints!
    Trouble is:
After installing iTunes 8.1.1 including QuickTime, whenever opening a TIF image in Internet Explorer 8, QuickTime will display it. I don't want that, I need to set a different application to open TIF files or to have Internet Explorer ask me whether I want the file displayed or download it.
This is extremely annoying, since our HTTP scan server (HP) sends its files as TIF directly to the browser, so there is now link to the file to right-click on and chose "save as". Before installing iTunes/QuickTime, Internet Explorer asked me where I wanted to have the file saved - now it just displays the image using the QuickTime plugin and I can't save it anymore.
I tried to right-click the image in the QuickTime display, it tells me I would need to buy QT Pro to save a copy.
I opened QuickTime's options and disabled TIF and TIFF both in file types and in MIME types.
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime.
I right-clicked on a TIF file on the harddisk, chose properties and changed the program with which to open the file (first Acrobat, than tried Windows image viewer, then Photoshop...).
Result: nothing; still IE8 displays TIF with QuickTime. (When I open a TIF from a folder on the harddisk, Vista opens it in the program I specified - but any TIF within IE8 is still displayed with QuickTime).
I opened Vista's control panel and set the standards for file type TIF/TIFF to a different programm.
Result: no change, within IE8 any TIF image is still displayed using the QT plugin.
I used Internet Explorer's Add-On settings to disable the QuickTime plugin.
Result: any TIF image is displayed as a red X, it doesn't ask me what to do with it or where to save it.
    What can I do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Best wishes
    Frank

  • Problems uploading files to various web browsers

I'm having huge problems with uploading files to various browsers on my MacBook Pro (running Mac Lion OS X 10.7.5)
My default web browser is Google Chrome but I have tried Firefox, Safari and Mail, too, and they're all presenting the same problem.
The problem is that whenever I try to attach a document to an email in Gmail or upload a photo/file to any website - it just doesn't play ball. The web browser then becomes totally unresponsive (not loading new tabs etc.) and I have to Force Quit and start the application running again. When I tried this in Mail, the application actually crashed.
I've figured out a way to get round the problem in Gmail - creating documents in Google Drive or simply dragging documents into the email - but I'm starting an online course soon and I really need to be able to upload documents, files, images etc.
    So far I have tried:
Updating the software on my Mac
    Updating Google Chrome
    Uninstalling and reinstalling Google Chrome
Signing in and out of Google Chrome
Deleting all browser history on Google Chrome
I've also figured out that it's not my firewall as I had an unrelated problem with that and it was taken down for around 24 hours to be fixed - I tried again to upload files in this 24 hour window and encountered the same problems.
I'm also having problems with my Windows for Mac - whenever I try to Save or Save As in Word - the programme becomes completely unresponsive, parts of the toolbars at the top white out and I have to Force Quit - hence, why I started using Google Drive to create documents. When I try and Save or Save As in Excel or Powerpoint, these programmes crash too.
I don't know if these problems are related, but I thought it best to bring it up just in case.
    Can anyone help me?!

In answer to my own question, in case anyone has the same issue, the problem turned out to be that my hard drive is failing.
If anyone has the same problem, back up all your data to an external device immediately (trying to run a computer on a failing hard drive is like trying to run on a broken leg, so I'm told) and take your mac to get a new hard drive - should cost around £100.

  • Why does the colour change from web browsers to CS5?

    Hi there
    I´m running OSX 10.6.4 on a MacPro 2009, 2x2.26, 16 gb RAM.
    Photoshop CS5 12.0.1.
When I import photos from the web (Safari or Firefox) to Photoshop, the colour changes drastically.
The only time the colours stay the same, is if I set the colour management to North American General Purpose 2, but this is a setting
I can´t use. I need to use my Spyder 3-calibrated RGB profile as RGB work space, and I use Fogra 27 or a specific cover art profile
    for CMYK use.
I enclose a screenshot of my settings and the problems that occur.
    Can someone help?
    All the best!
    Hakon, Norway

When I import photos from the web (Safari or Firefox) to Photoshop, the colour changes drastically.
Most of the photos on the Web will be un-tagged sRGB (if they have a tag, an embedded profile, Photoshop (and color-managed browsers) will pick up the profile and display it properly...).
The short answer is to open the un-tagged file in in Photoshop> Edit> Assign Profile: sRGB
You may know, the Mac OS applies its default Monitor profile to untagged color, whereas, Photoshop will apply its default Working RGB if you tell it not to manage the document...if you have a wide-gamut monitor and Assign MonitorRGB to an sRGB file, you get an intense saturation boost especially in the reds (is a clue).
YOU MAY BE WISE to set something like sRGB as your Photoshop Working RGB with these Color Management Policies (to try and figure out what's going on)...
MonitorRGB equals Photoshop WorkingRGB (as you are set up there) is a disaster for any number of reasons — Photoshop already displays through the monitor profile so setting its Working Space to your monitor profile is BAD workflow for 99.99 percent of the users who setup that workflow...
