Quicktime '?' in Firefox

Greetings. I've been looking through a number of threads on this issue (including some in Apple support discussions), and have tried my best to follow everyone's advice, but I'm still having the same issue with firefox (a 'Q' with a '?' when I try to stream Quicktime/Flash files). I don't have this issue in my IE, but it's annoying to have to switch browsers every time I want to stream something.
Windows XP
Firefox 2.0.0.6
Quicktime 7.2
Flash 9.0.47.0
Would someone mind taking up this issue once again?
edit:
Just as clarification, I've checked the MIME settings in my Quicktime so that it is not set to play Flash files.
I've also tried deleting the npqt*.dll files in firefox and quicktime.

reimerth, in this link http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/flash.html
scroll down to>What to do if QuickTime takes over handling Flash content. Where you've tryed everything else it could be having to remove pluginreg dat. And then re-installing Flash.
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla is the location.

  • Quicktime  and firefox issues

when installed, quicktime overwrites flash files, like youtube or any ads that use flash, with the quicktime logo with "?". before, if i uninstalled quicktime, flash would work again.
now even with quicktime uninstalled, firefox promts that the "quicktime plug-in only works with quicktime version 5 or later and to visit apple.com to download quicktime". installing quicktime 7.1.6 leads to the disappearance of all flash once again.
this problem only happens in firefox; flash works fine in both Internet Explorer and Opera.
EDIT: when quicktime IS installed, the only MIME settings selected are for quicktime movie. nothing under the Misc. category is selected.
this has been entirely frustrating and any help that can be offered would be extremely appreciated.
    Windows XP

How to view/hear pretty much everything:
Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer from http://uk.real.com/player/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • Can't Install Quicktime for Firefox under W2K

I am unable to install Quicktime with Firefox. I am running W2K.
The current version doesn't support Quicktime. I'm not able to find a version that does.
    Any suggestions?

Click the "Older versions" link and search for 7.1.6. I believe it is the last version to run on your OS.

  • Latest QuickTime Crashes Firefox / Safari on Tiger?

    Hey all,
So I just used "Software Update" to update my Quicktime to the latest, 7.55 I believe. Now, Firefox crashes everytime I start up, Safari has a 50% chance of crashing when I visit a site, and all programs in general run sluggish.
It seems like Quicktime is hogging up resources, but that doesn't seem very logical. Any ideas to fix this? I'm running a Macbook with Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2 Ghz Intel Core Duo, and 1 GB RAM.
This is really annoying, so any help will be much appreciated. Thank you for your time, and have a great Thanksgiving!

To eliminate software disk problems, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
You'll need the CD unless you have another boot drive.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
It may help to reinstall the big combo update for your Mac...
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
    Repair Permissions afterwards, reboot.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
    Or maybe reinstall Safari...
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229
"Here's a list of all the custom installation options available with Optional Installs.mpkg:
    * Applications
    o Address Book 4.0
    o iCal 2.0
    o iChat 3.0
    o iTunes 4.7.1
    o Mail 2.0
    o Oxford Dictionaries
    o Safari 2.0
    o X11"
Then udate Safari again, but I'd try to get it where we don't get that disk error first.

  • Quicktime in firefox browser

If i want to download a movie i place the url in cocoawget or what seems to happen in firefox browser
is that the quicktime symbol appears in the broswer and the movie downloads then plays in the browswer.
Once i close the broswer where is the movie stored?
    andy

    To download a browser movie:
    Your browser>File>Save Page As...
In the window that pops up, make your selection of where you want the file downloaded to.
To make life easier, select your desktop.
    Click the Save Button
Now the browsers are saved in your browser(s) cache file ONLY if you enabled following QT Settings:
    QT Preferences>Browser
Make sure Save movies in the disk cache is enabled (checked).

  • How to disable quicktime in firefox, and launch with VLC.

I have tried to disable the quicktime browser plugin in quicktime to not open .mpeg and simular files, however they still launch the quicktime player plugin in firefox. How can I get it so that any video file i click on asks me which program I would like to open it with?

Couple ways to treat these situations. Here's one solution:
Go to System Preferences < Quicktime. Click on the Advanced Tab. Click on MIME Settings and select (or de-select) media types you don't want Quicktime to open by default.

  • Quicktime in Firefox, music not playing

If I play an mp3 file in my Safari and IE browser (Open Location) it works just fine. But when opening the file in Firefox or Netscape the music plays for a few seconds and then
it stops. Here's the url to the song:
    http://ahsyad.com/shakeitoff.mp3
Can anyone tell me why? I ran out of guesses.

QuickTime X and Safari in Snow Leopard no longer seem to support the EMBED tag (which isn't part of the standard, BTW, albeit is widely supported). Apple's advice is to use JavaScript instead to include a video or audio file. See this web page, the "Doing It the Easy Way" section, for instructions.
    Hope this helps.

  • Quicktime Plugin/Firefox stops playing mp3 after a few seconds

We've run into a problem with Quicktime Player in Firefox (Win XP) only playing the first few seconds of an mp3. It doesn't happen with all mp3s, but out of the five we've tested four showed this problem... only one of the five played through to the end.
When accessing the mp3 file, quicktime plugin loads with the big Q, takes a few seconds (i.e. seems to be downloading the full file), displays the controller, then starts playing. The progress bar moves quickly to the right and stops when it reaches the far right. For some of the mp3s it's only a second or two, for one it is about 8 seconds. The ones that only play for a second or two are regular music mp3s of about 3-5 minutes in length. The one that plays 8 seconds, is really 17 minutes, 42 seconds long.
All of these seem to play fine with the Quicktime plugin in IE. And all the files play fine in iTunes and Quicktime as local files as well as streaming.
The music files are mp3s generated by iTunes using the "Convert to MP3" function (original files are m4a files from the iTunes store).
The longer file (a podcast) was generated by a third party, so I'm not sure what tools were used to generate it, however I've tested two versions generated by iTunes that also did not play past 8 seconds:
    - Original encoding with ID3 tags converted to a different version by iTunes
    - New encoding generated by iTunes using the "Convert to MP3" function
(FWIW, renaming the files doesn't make a difference either.)
I have confirmed that this is happening for a colleague of mine on his computer as well.
Reloading the page/mp3 file (F5), force-reload (control-F5), disabling the cache (using Web-Developer Plugin, or Firebug), clearing the cache (through Firefox's Options->Advanced->Network->Offline Storage settings, or through "Clear Recent History") ... none of these seem to make a difference.
However, I did notice that for the files that weren't working, using Firebug's Net panel, it looks like the plugin starts *and finishes* playing the file before the file is completely downloaded (i.e. the player stops playing and the Net panel still shows the file downloading -- usually for a few seconds more before it is completely downloaded).
(And now the one mp3 file that was playing fine is no longer playing. It too just plays a second or two then stops...)
This is with Firefox 3.6.3 and Quicktime Plugin 7.6.6 on Windows XP Pro.

The player also waits until the file is fully downloaded before starting to play... As opposed to the others where the player starts and ends playing before they are downloaded completely.)

  • Quicktime and Firefox

I've got a 64-bit Vista machine with both the latest versions of Firefox and Quicktime installed. Whenever I try and play a .mov file in Firefox it plays just fine but the control bar at the bottom is blacked out and I have no control over the pause/play and slider buttons. This hasn't happened to me before, how can I fix this?

I have never, ever, had trouble in over two years, once iTunes came out in usable 64-bit, to use Minefield and QT. Yes, plug-ins (like QT and Flash) are 32-bit, but I still don't need to run in any kind of "mode."

  • QuickTime Hijacks Firefox?

Every upgrade of QuickTime I've added hijacks more and more of Firefox graphics... ads, music players, etc, which renders them unplayable. I don't mind not seeing the ads, but truthfully I am stumped as to why QuickTime does this. I can't see any preference that keeps it from taking over all the graphics it sees, trying to play stuff it can't possible play. I am currently QuickTime-less and kinda enjoying it, because everything I visit works, except of course the items QuickTime could operate. Any help on this one?

System Preferences -> QuickTime -> Advanced -> MIME Settings
You can set what formats the QT plugin handles there.

  • How do I disassociate Quicktime from Firefox?

When I try to download podcasts from a website I've accessed through firefox, I'm not given the option to download the file to my computer. Instead, the file automatically starts playing in quicktime. This is annoying because I want to save the file in itunes for download on my ipod.

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:
#From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select ''Add-ons'', or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the ''Tools'' menu and click ''Add-ons''.
#Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the ''Extensions'' button on the left side of the window.
#You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
#To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the ''Remove'' button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
#Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the ''Restart now'' link in the message.
You can find further information about uninstalling extensions in the following articles:

  • Quicktime in Firefox on XP

    Hi
In using the latest Quicktime on the latest firefox on this site:
    http://nlbif.eti.uva.nl/naturalis/detail.php?lang=uk&id=46
which offers a quicktime application that gives 3D views of extinct birds, each time I click on a large image Quicktime opens a window and allocates a huge number of pages. When I close the new window, the pages remain allocated. After a few of these even my 2GB machine slows down with paging problems.
Closing all Firefox windows recovers all the space. This is not a reasonable result. Closing the single quicktime window should free the pages.

PS It sure is hard to provide a bug report on quicktime.

Okay, so I re-exported it to AAC audio at 44.1khz. Any idea why the former audio wouldn't work?
    Thanks!

  • Quicktime Restarts Firefox

Hi. I'm a longtime user of Quicktime and a longtime user of Mozilla Firefox. Up until recently, the two had no problems working together. Now, however, it seems Firefox has developed some sort of Quicktime allergy: Whenever I try to play something within Firefox with Quicktime (video or audio), I receive a prompt asking me to update to version 7.4.5. But alas! I have verson 7.4.5! Before I have a chance to click yes or no, however, a Windows dialog box pops open asking if I would like to send an error report, because Firefox has erred and needs to close.
I really don't want to use another browser; I love Firefox. What can I do to fix this? Any suggestions?

I clarified "restart" in my post. The error causes windows to give me a "Windows Error;" a box opens up, telling me an error has occurred in Firefox and it needs to be closed, then asks whether I would like to send an error report. No, my computer doesn't restart. My Firefox is the latest version available. My Java is also up-to-date. My video card driver, as well, is as new as can be. Everything is up-to-date.

  • QuickTime prevents Firefox from erasing history

Whenever I have visited a website that uses the QuickTime plugin, I can't erase the history or any other related information (cookies, ...).
Sometimes I get this information in a pop-up:
"''QuickTime failed to initialize. Error #0.
Please make sure the QuickTime is properly installed on this computer.''"
But most of the time, it just freezes and I have to kill Firefox and two "plugin-container.exe" subprocesses whose command-line is detailed below:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox 4.0 Beta 7\plugin-container.exe" --channel=1588.157db360.1147255996 "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll" "Mozilla.Firefox.4.0" -omnijar C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox 4.0 Beta 7\omni.jar 1588 \\.\pipe\gecko-crash-server-pipe.1588 plugin

Restarting version 3.6, clearing all from there and coming back to Firefox 4 works, but it is a hassle. After that, clearing the history works again.
Also happens if launched in safe mode.
