Quicktime is busted.

Whenever I try to open up Quicktime, nothing happens. Nothing loads up and I don't even get an error message. I've tried running "repair" on the install screen, but that didn't fix it. When I try to re-install it, it gets nearly done, then an error screen pops up saying that it messed up and failed to complete. Same when I try to un-install it. Removing it using add/remove programs gives me the same problem. So I tried deleting it from program folders and I get the message, "QTPlugin.ocx cannot be deleted, access is denied." Any of the other files can be deleted without any problem.
Also, the problems with Quicktime are preventing iTunes from installing or running properly.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

When I try to re-install it, it gets nearly done, then an error screen pops up saying that it messed up and failed to complete.
What is the precise text of that error message? There's a few different ones i can think of that might be being produced then.

  • QuickTime/WMP/RealPlayer - ALL BUSTED

So it seems that after the new Quicktime update, I'm having some pretty serious issues. My problem is that while QuickTime will still play (though it takes about 4-5 minutes for a video to open), other videos in RealPlayer or Windows Media Player no longer have sound! The videos in mention all previously played with sound, but after the update something seems to be lost.
Any idea what the reason for this could be? Or how to change it? I've tried re-installing both applications which has not helped. (Also - how in the world do you trash the entire Windows Media Player file???)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks-

Just solved my own problem with just a little research - and here's an answer for anyone else with a similar problem:

  • Can't get iPhone 5 recording to work using Quicktime on Yosemite

QuickTime on Yosemite now has this nifty feature where you can record your iPhone, provided you connect it using a lightning cable. Now I've done all that, but when I open QuickTime and select my iPhone from the dropdown menu next to the record button on QuickTime, it stutters and fails to pull my iPhone's image to my mac. If I press record anyways, it crashes.
One thing that does happen is that it keeps reopening iPhoto asking if I want to import photos from my phone. (a little annoying.) Maybe the cable is bust? It works fine in any other occasion.
Who else has this problem? I need the recording function pretty badly...

I'm having a similar issue.  I'm trying to record some games on my iPhone 6 Plus.  My Macbook Pro is from 2010 and still running strong.  However, I'm getting crashes when trying to record Vain Glory.  I can record other games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.  Quicktime on the Mac just seems to be crashing with certain iPhone apps.  Weird issue.

  • Quicktime plug in problem

Ever since installing itunes and quicktime on my computer, Quicktime plug in is not loading when I'm on the internet. I just see a Q with a question mark. I have tried reinstalling Quicktime and itunes but the problem is still there. Please help!

A lot of people seem to have this problem and for some reason no one knows why. I've tried using their awful FAQ and kept getting sent here. I've even mailed them personally and still haven't gotten a response. They either don't know why their stuff is busted or just don't care. Either way I'd like some sort of official response.

  • Why does Apple refuse to make a 64 bit version of quicktime for Windows?

For those of us in digital media creation Quicktime is a highly used App, how ever access to 4+ gigs of ram is more important. I'm making the switch to a 64-bit OS in the next week or so, and it's really frustrating to see that Apple, after how many years since XP64 first hit, STILL does not have a 64-Bit version of Quicktime. What is the hold up?
I also don't understand how they can release something where one of the main features is busted for multiple versions. I had to stick with an older version of QT for quite awhile before the load image sequence was fixed. Why are their Windows customers treated as second class citizens?

  • Rosetta no longer functions after iTunes & Quicktime update

I got off the 3rd phone call to AppleCare (three techs and product specialist -- the least helpful in the bunch by the way) and finally isolated the problem I'm having but the reaction from the AppleCare guy (the last one pretty much freaked) means there is little hope for a quick solution from Apple.
After updating iTunes and Quicktime using OSX software update. I could no longer launch legacy apps that operate using rosetta (i.e MS Office, AppleWorks, JMP, etc.). Additionally, if I go into GetInfo from the finder and click "Open using Rosetta" that app will no longer launch. In both cases the app simply (if clicked from the finder) appears briefly in the dock and then disappears.
When I had AppleCare on the line the guy went to confirm something with me on his machine and was very surprised to find that his copy of MS Word was not working either (his word were something like: "Good Lord, the menus are all grayed out, huh?". At which point I decided there was not going to be a fix. He sent me some articles on Archive and Install, which I may do but I'm hoping not to go that route.
I've got one more symptom that may help others figure out what's happening, which will hopefully mean you can help me fix this:
When I try and launch an app (legacy or universal) from the command line using rosetta (see this for more info) I get: Segmentation fault!
Okay, first would someone out there confirm that this is not happening on their system. Then, one of you brilliant souls, let me know what I can do to fix it. Is there a sneaky way I could bust into a package/install image and install a fresh copy of the rosetta libraries etc? My experience with Segmentation Fault usually points to the executable being broken, but I'm by no stretch of the imagination an expert.
    Regards,
    David G.

You won't like this but I figured out QT smashed rosetta soon after installing the ituunes/quicktime updates when quicken wouldn't load...i knew it was one of the major apps that was never released for universal...at first i assumed the apple update had just broken quicken and checked the quicken site, finding no posts...then it dawned on me that the QT update must have damaged the System so I went hunting in my apps for other rosetta-only apps, found an old CD label printing program and it exhibited the same behaviors.
I went to the apple site and the company has not posted any info on the bug, then went looking for a standalone rosetta installer...couldn't find one
Here's the part you won't like: my mac mini is 3 months old. I dug out the os x install disks and reinstalled the system. Then went through and reinstalled system updates. Reinstalling the system killed norton so I had to reinstall that too (no wonder i keep all the installer disks as dmg's on the ministack).
Result of all this, replacing the system, was that Rosetta is now working again.
I then went on to install ram, that went less smoothly and my local geniuses were less ingenious by this point, but that's another story for a paperweight website.

  • Adding a .smi File to a .mov quicktime movie

I have an unsubbed Quicktime movie and both .smi and .srt files containing subs for the movie. How can I attach the subs in the .smi or .srt files to the .mov file? I also have the video in .mkv format, and used the application SmartConverter to change it into a quicktime movie. Is there a way to add the .smi or .srt file to the .mkv file then convert it into a quicktime movie or something?

    Hi,
There is also a Myth buster from Paul Randal which says you do not need to keep tempdb data files equal to processor core
Myth-Tempdb data file should always have one data file per processor core
But if you read Microsoft blogs it would say you should have tempdb files  as per cores.
    Tempdb best prctices
It all boils down to fact that are you facing issue with Tempdb. Does recommendation that tempdb data file equal to logical core always holds true, no it does not always that is what Paul Randal tried to show in his Article. You start with two data files
on different drive and monitor performance of Tempdb if you see PFA,GAM SGAM contention adding a data file would help. These recommendations generally hold true for huge OLTP environment where MS tested various features and your environment might not be same
as the one tested. Its a Good practice not an ideal. Ideal is one that suits your requirement and that would require a testing.

  • So is it just me, or is Mavericks a bust?  My MBP runs way hotter now. I don't have time for trial and error solutions. Is Apple offering a way to downgrade back to Mountain lion? I want out of Mavericks ASAP.

So is it just me, or is Mavericks a bust?  My MBP runs much hotter since the upgrade. Why do I need ot sit around watching Activity Monitor, manually controlling my fans, and deleting extensions that I enjoy using. Don't even get me started on the Quicktime/Mov issues. I had none of these issues on Mountian Lion. Searching these forums, I see it's not just me. Why would Apple release a new system w/o peoperly testing it on MBPs?
I don't have time for trial and error solutions. I've tried the obvious ones. No help. Is Apple offering a way to downgrade back to Mountain lion?  Or better yet, a Mavericks update that adresses these problems? As of now, I want out of Mavericks ASAP.
My processor is 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7.
    8 GB 1600 MHZ DDR3 memory.
13inch MBP purchased ust over a year ago- 1-13.

Nope, it'a not just me, see above. And yup- I'm backed up, But I don't own a Mountain lion install disc. That's why I was posting here in the first place. Thanks
Nobody owns a ML install disc - ML was only ever distributed as a download from the Mac App Store.
If you have a Time Machine backup, you can boot into recovery mode and restore from your Moutain Lion TM backup volume.  If you have a system clone, then you can boot from the clone, and just clone ML back onto your internal drive.
Going back to your previous installation from a backup should be trivially simply if you have the backup in hand.

  • Quicktime being slowtime

ok, for the last 22 hours, my computer has been installing quicktime 7.0.3, and has been hung on the "updating environment strings" and the taskmanager is showing qtplugininstaller.exe as the culprit. I have read many of hte threads in here and in the itunes section trying to resolve this issue, using both ccleaner nad windows install cleanup utility, with no success. As it stands, i can launch quicktime, because its hung up, but as soon as a cancel(read kill the install processes, as i cannot cancel from the install shield window itself), it rollsback, and i have no quicktime program, and itunes fails
need help soon, or apple will get a busted nano back

    Hi Green-Shoot,
I understand that you are wanting to remove Quicktime as the default player. We would want to edit this option within the "Default Programs" control panel in Windows.
The following article outlines how to make iTunes the default player:
iTunes for Windows: How to make iTunes the default application for music and audio files in Windows Vista and Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3202
Note: To make a different application the default media player, follow these same steps and select the application you want to use. iTunes for Windows can be configured to notify you if iTunes is not the default player for audio files.
    Cheers!

  • Quicktime 7 pro

I just bought Quicktime 7 Pro, maybe for the second time, I'm not sure.
I followed the instructions and downloaded Quicktime 7,
and got the registration code via email.
The instructions say to open System Preferences and click on the Quick Time Icon, then the register button.
The QuickTime Icon IS NOT IN the systems preferences.
I can get to the registration box from the preferences for QuickTime 7 in the header, but I get no prompt to buy. The new $29 registration code is in the box, but nothing happens.
Please help. I think this is the second time I paid good money, and nothing happens.

    Thanks.
I downloaded that iskysoft and, to my knowledge it was a bust. The only converting option I discerned in the free version was to convert .mov to mp4.
    I have a 27in iMac, OS 10.8.3.
I want to convert .mov files to .wmv files, so that I can imbed them in Powerpoint presentations that can be shown on the average Windows computer in Korea (which is VERY high tech, just not widespread Mac yet).
In setting up a presentation, I do not have the time or Korean language skills to go solving media problems during a presentation.
I want to convert Mac .mov files to .wmv files for viewing on Windows.
From all that I have read, the only program that does that is Flip4Mac? Yes, no?
Will the $29 version of Flip4mac do this, or do I need the $100+ version.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • On Dell core2duo - QuickTime PictureViewer does not work

I have some considerable problems with QuickTime's PictureViewer application. The system has Windows XP pro and a core 2 Duo processor running at 1.86Ghz - also has 2 Gb ddram. Norton internet security is installed and up to date.
Once the PictureViewer application is launched and used to view a file, the shut down by the X, the UI is still running, even though the application has stopped. I have ACDsee8 as default picture viewer.
I also carry IrfanView to preview single files. No files are default in it.
Is there a trick to using the PictureViewer application?

    Howdy neighbor,
I used to live in Maryland and loved the Amish shops and drivers (carriages) along Route 6 and 301.
On the Mac OS Picture Viewer has been replaced by our "Preview" application (part of OS X) and Windows users still get it installed as part of QuickTIme.
It is a relic of the old days of Web use and most modern Windows no longer use Picture Viewer in anything they do day to day.
It appears as though you have assigned image formats to open in your image (viewing/editing) software and not open in Picture Viewer.
QuickTime Control Panel can remove most of these file associations that force Picture Viewer to open the file and you should then be able to assign the application you want to use.

Can you start QuickTime on your computer?
You'll probably have to search for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and use it to remove QuickTime Player and iTunes. Then download and install the iTunes again.

a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is avabilable.

Head into your Windows Update. Are there any new updates available for you? If so, and you install, does that clear up the error message?
